Everyone’s Saying The Same Thing About Ryan Gosling’s Oscar Nomination

If you’ve seen Barbie (and judging by its blockbuster popularity, you probably have), you’ll know that Ryan Gosling played Stereotypical Ken in the film.

His character, whose official job was “beach” and whose main hobby was “pining after Margot Robbie’s Barbie,” delighted audiences with his hilarious antics and, er, fascinating singing voice.

Ryan Gosling has been nominated for the 2024 Oscars awards for Best Supporting Actor as Ken. The song played by his character, I’m Just Ken, which is ― well ― all about Ken has been nominated for Best Original Song.

And while nobody’s doubting the actor’s hilarious performance (which was undeniably incredible, and definitely Oscar-worthy in our opinion), some on X (formerly Twitter) have noticed that Greta Gerwig, the film’s director, and Margot Robbie ― Barbie’s main lead and producer of the film ― have not received a Best Director or Best Actress nomination.

This, some point out, is ironic given the feminist message of the film.

Of course, America Ferrera did receive an equivalent nomination for her role as Gloria in the movie (she’s been nominated for Best Supporting Actress). Greta Gerwig’s screenplay, co-written with Noah Baumbach, did get nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.

And Margot Robbie is indirectly nominated for Best Picture via her production work.

Still, people on X thought the Best Actress and Best Director omissions were… interesting. Here are some responses:

Sophie Ellis-Bextor Soars Even Further Up The UK Singles Chart Thanks To Saltburn

Her 2001 hit Murder On The Dancefloor is featured prominently in the divisive film’s final scene, which has led to the song ricocheting back into the top 10, landing at number eight last week.

On Friday afternoon, the Official Charts Company confirmed that Murder On The Dancefloor had risen even further this week, missing out on the top spot by just one place.

This puts the track in the same chart position it reached upon its release more than 20 years ago, when it was held off the top spot by Daniel Bedingfield’s Gotta Get Thru This.

Can the continued popularity of Saltburn push Sophie’s track to a new peak next week, and finally hit number one? We’ll have to wait and see.

Sophie previously said of her song’s renewed chart success: “One thing I’ve always loved about my work is its ability to surprise me.

“Murder On The Dancefloor is a song I’ve been singing for 20 years, and I’m on really good terms with it. I love singing it, I love performing it and what’s happening at the moment is kind of magical, actually.”

But Murder On The Dancefloor isn’t the only 2000s hit that Saltburn has helped propel into the charts.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s signature hit Murder On The Dancefloor is back in the UK top 10 this week for the first time in two decades.

And it’s all thanks to a little film called Saltburn.

As those who’ve seen the polarising film will already know, Murder On The Dance Floor features heavily in the film’s climax, with Barry Keoghan performing a naked dance around his recently-inherited manor to the 2001 classic in Saltburn’s final moments.

The success of Emerald Fennell’s latest movie has led to a resurgence for the song, with a major boost in streaming figures pushing it to number eight in this week’s UK singles chart.

“One thing I’ve always loved about my work is its ability to surprise me,” Sophie told the Official Charts Company of her track’s new-found renaissance.

She added: “I’m so proud of Murder On The Dancefloor, but I also share it with everybody who has love for it. I’m just having so much fun. Thank you!”

It was previously revealed that Murder On The Dancefloor had also been discovered by a new audience across the pond thanks to its prominence in Saltburn, even topping the Spotify Viral Chart in the US.

All we can say is, it’s too bad Saltburn didn’t get released a few weeks earlier, we might have had The Cheeky Girls at Christmas number one…

Saltburn’s cultural footprint extends far beyond the Sophie Ellis-Bextor resurgence, though.

One key scene from the film (we’re sure you can guess which) has inspired a viral cocktail on TikTok, as well as its own candle.

Hugh Grant Makes Surprising Admission About Some Of His Most Popular Roles

From the early 90s onwards, Hugh Grant became known as the undisputed king of the romantic comedy.

With the likes of Four Weddings And A Funeral, Notting Hill, Love Actually and Bridget Jones’s Diary already under his belt, the British actor later went transatlantic in rom-coms like Music And Lyrics, Two Weeks Notice and Did You Hear About The Morgans?.

However, while you might think the genre pretty much came as second nature to Hugh, he told former co-star Drew Barrymore on her US talk show that he “never felt comfortable” doing his famous romantic comedies.

“I love those films. I love the fact that people still like them, but I never felt comfortable really doing them,” he said.

“I don’t know about you, but I prefer more of a mask. I want to be someone else. Then it frees me up and then I quite like acting.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Hugh claimed he’d become “a bit better” in his job and “a little less bad after I had children, got married, got happier”.

“I got too old and fat and ugly to do romantic comedies obviously,” he joked, claiming that since saying farewell to romantic comedies he’s been “offered more interesting things” that have made his career more varied.

Indeed, the past few years alone have seen Hugh take a prominent role in Charlie Brooker’s satirical Netflix special Death To 2020, the award-winning drama A Very English Scandal and, of course, the much-loved Paddington films.

People Are Only Just Realising Who Played The Husband In Barbie

Our favourite plastic fantastic movie this year, Barbie, was praised for a lot of its feminist messaging and for being a celebration of all things girlhood, but there may be one extra exciting wholesome detail that viewers missed.

If you cast your mind back on this dreary day to the flick that took over our bright summer, you’ll remember brief glances at Gloria’s husband. Gloria, played by America Ferrera, was the mother responsible for Barbie’s spiritual awakening.

At one point in the film, Gloria’s husband, played by Ryan Piers Williams, is learning Spanish on popular language app DuoLingo whilst seated on the sofa in their shared home.

Well, it turns out that almost all of this is accidentally based on reality…!

It turns out that actually, America Ferrera and Ryan Piers Williams are married in real life, and according to an interview with Greta Gerwig featured in a TikTok video, it had been written into the script that Gloria’s husband would be trying to learn to speak Spanish.

However, when America saw this, she said, “did you write this because my husband is always learning Spanish?!” before telling Greta that her husband was actually in the other room at that moment, learning Spanish! Greta admitted that this was not actually intentional but was delighted.

From there, Greta actually hired him for the part. The director described him as a “lovely, most wonderful person” and added that he was “so game” to take part in the film.

Greta added that during the cutaway scene, America was actually behind the camera giving direction to her husband in something the director described as feeling “very familial”.

Olivia Colman Is Definitely Not Playing It Cool When It Comes To Her Next Dream Role

She may have played Queen Elizabeth II and even won an Oscar for her performance in The Favourite, but there’s one career ambition Olivia Colman cannot hide her excitement about.

The former star of The Crown and all-round national treasure revealed in a new interview that there’s one franchise she’s still hoping to land a role in.

Speaking to British Vogue, she revealed she would love to play M, the iconic James Bond character that’s been played by the likes of Judi Dench and Ralph Fiennes in the past.

“The amount of time I have wanted to be M. I’m not sure who I need to call…” Olivia said in a recent cover interview with British Vogue.

When the writer of the piece suggested she contact Bond producer Barbara Broccoli, Olivia replied: “I met her once. I wanted to go, ‘Can I be M?’ I must try to be cooler about it. Maybe she reads Vogue? Put that bit in.”

The Broadchurch star went on to explain that she’s less inclined to return to a stage role these days, having last performed in a theatre production back in 2017.

Instead, she said, she would prefer to focus on something little more action-packed.

“I have always wanted to walk in slow motion with an explosion behind me looking cool,” she said.

Elsewhere in the interview, Olivia explained why she’s not keen on long stints working away, which take her away from her three children.

“I love being at home. I rarely take jobs away,” she said, adding that she’s “trying to say no more often to have a bigger gap between jobs”.

Asked if she would say yes to a lead role in a Martin Scorsese film, she replied: “Can’t he come and do it in Norfolk?”

Olivia is on the cover of British Vogue for the first time

James Bond producer Barbara recently revealed that the franchise had a “big road ahead” before the next film, after Daniel Craig bid farewell to the career-defining role in 2021′s No Time To Die.

Earlier this month, she explained the reason for the hold-up, telling Variety that “it’ll take some time” before the team is ready to begin production.

“You know, it’s a whole new reinvention, so it’ll take some time,” she added.

As for who could play the next Bond, Barbie director Greta Gerwig thinks one of her Kens, Kingsley Ben-Adir, could be perfect. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Regé-Jean Page and James Norton are also among actors whose names have so far cropped up amidst casting predictions and rumours.

‘He’s Extraordinary’: Daniel Radcliffe Honours His Paralysed Harry Potter Stunt Double

Daniel Radcliffe is celebrating the man who made him fly.

The Harry Potter star, who became famous at 12 years old for portraying the fictional character, produced a new documentary about his stunt double from the films. David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived, chronicles the titular 42-year-old’s journey after being paralysed on set.

“I used to fly,” he says in the film, according to People. “Not so much anymore.”

Holmes is eight years older than Radcliffe but served as his stunt double for all eight “Potter” films. He suffered an on-set spinal injury in 2009, however, breaking his neck after being propelled backward into a wall while test filming for the final two instalments.

The Deathly Hallows incident left Holmes paralysed from the waist down.

“I wanted to make something about Dave for years because he’s extraordinary and I wanted to share that with the world,” Radcliffe told People for a story published Tuesday. “I was trying to do it myself. We shot some stuff and I didn’t really know what I was doing.”

“I thought I might know how to direct a documentary,” he added. “I absolutely didn’t.”

Radcliffe ultimately hired Potter video operator Dan Hartley to direct the film.

The documentary opens with Holmes as Harry Potter performing in mid-air on a broomstick, showing just how essential he was to bringing J.K. Rowling’s literary vision to the screen.

Radcliffe was initially intent on making a documentary about stunt men and their invaluable work in general, but it shifted to a focused look at Holmes before and after his accident. For Radcliffe, it also served as a trip down memory lane.

“Dave, still, is one of the most important people in my life,” he told the BBC this week.

”He was somebody that was so incredibly fun to hang with when I was young,” Radcliffe added. “But then as I grew up he became a real guide to me, and kind of mentor and someone who really looked out for me, and that really has just continued as we’ve grown.”

Radcliffe forged ahead as a daring journeyman actor to shed his Potter fame with more risqué work.

Holmes became an ambassador for the RNOH Charity. He’s also a producer, including for the podcast Cunning Stunts, which featured other stunt professionals discussing the art.

Holmes told People he’s “not ready to watch” the documentary yet, but knows it was made “with love and sensitivity.”

“I have a team of Avengers that are wheelchair users or people from all different aspects of the disability spectrum that have seen this thing and said, ’No, it’s really empowering and it’s really positive and you’re going to do a good thing for the world,’” he said.

“Those opinions are the ones that matter to me,” Holmes concluded.

Here’s What’s Happening With Your Most Anticipated Shows And Films Now The Actors’ Strike Is Over

In the immortal words of one particularly profound Twitter/X user: “Girl, the strike.”

They were, of course, referring to the industrial action undertaken by both the writers and actors of Hollywood earlier this year, after the unions WGA and Sag-Aftra made a string of demands to protect their members and improve their working conditions.

The Writers’ Strike ended at the tail end of September this year, while the Actors’ Strike only came to a close this week.

Still, despite being just a day out of the strike, several major projects are already putting the wheels in motion to get back to work.

Here’s where things currently stand for some of the most anticipated shows and films that were put on pause due to the strikes…

Deadpool 3

According to Deadline, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s threequel featuring the R-rated mercenary will be back to work “this week or in the very near future”.

Shawn Levy (Deadpool 3’s director) has previously confirmed that the flick was about 50% complete before production came to a halt – and tweeted “Let’s effing GOOOOO” after the strike’s conclusion.

The Boys

Following its very well-received spin-off Gen V, Prime Video’s raucous superhero romp The Boys is also confirmed to be back in production.

Creator and producer Eric Kripke wrote on X: “Here’s the update. Editing: done. VFX: halfway done. Music & sound: quarter done.

“Now that the SAG strike is over (yay), the actors can record additional dialogue. No airdate yet, but will be worth the wait. It could be our best season. For sure our craziest.”

Stranger Things

According to cast member David Harbour, the cast of Netflix’s sci-fi smash is ready and rarirng to get back to work – and would be doing so in “a couple of days”.

“I mean, we got to film that last season of ‘Stranger Things,’ don’t we? I got to be down there, like, in a couple of days. We got to get going — we’re late.”

The writers of the show previously teased the first scene of season five on what’s become known as “Stranger Things Day” once the writers’ strike came to an end.

Gladiator 2

Deadline has also reported that the Gladiator sequel, starring Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington, is also back in production.

Ridley Scott, who directed the original film and its forthcoming follow-up, previously revealed that he’d edited around an hour and a half of footage, including a scene where Paul Mescal’s character fights off *checks notes* a pack of baboons.

The media outlet also claimed that these projects will soon be back in production too: Clint Eastwood’s Juror No. 2, Sony’s Venom 3 and the Tim Burton directed Beetlejuice 2, which reportedly only has two days of filming left.

Mission: Impossible

With a eighth instalment of the franchise coming soon, director (and writer… and producer) Christopher McQuarrie previously confirmed that prior to the strike’s commencement, the film had completed shooting – that is, apart from “the biggest set piece, the central set piece”.

Wicked

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo star front and centre as good and bad witch Glinda and Elphaba in Jon Chu’s movie adaptation of the hit musical, which is being split into two parts.

Although he’s not said anything specific about production resuming, he posted an Instagram story which said he was “excited to get back to work” after the strike’s resolution.

The White Lotus

Also not currently filming, but set to get going in early 2024, is Mike White’s satirical black comedy.

He previously confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the season will take place in Thailand and feature the return of a fan favourite character from season one…

The New Trailer For Inside Out 2 Introduces Us To A Brand New Emotion

Disney and Pixar have unveiled the trailer for the long-awaited Inside Out sequel.

A follow-up to the Oscar-winning film was first announced in 2016, with Joy, Sadness, Anger, Envy and Disgust all returning for the second instalment.

However, this time around, the gang are set to be joined by a new emotion. Enter: Anxiety.

The introduction was made in a short teaser that depicts the existing emotions having their world turned around by their new arrival, who is portrayed by Stranger Things actor Maya Hawke.

“Our little girl is growing up so fast, and things couldn’t be better,” Joy is heard teasing at the beginning of the teaser, although seemingly it’s not to last.

It’s also hinted that Anxiety is not the only new kid on the block, though, as the new newcomer teases to the other emotions that she’s not alone.

A poster for the film shared on Pixar’s social media accounts also teases as many as four new additions to the cast.

Inside Out first hit cinemas in 2015, and won huge critical acclaim, including an Oscar win for Best Animated Feature and a Best Original Screenplay nomination.

The film centres around a teenage girl, Riley, who – along with her five core emotions – has her life turned upside down when she and her family move to a new city.

Emmy winner Amy Poehler, The Office’s Phyllis Smith and Mindy Kaling, former Saturday Night Live star Bill Hader and comedian Lewis Black voiced Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Fear and Anger, respectively, with Kaitlyn Dias, Diane Lane, Kyle MacLachlan and Richard King also among the voice cast.

Tony Hale will take over the role of Fear, while Liza Lapira replaces Mindy Kaling as Disgust.

Inside Out 2 is due to hit cinemas in June 2024.
