Dolly Parton Just Reached An All-Time High In The UK Charts

Just over a week since her death at the age of 80, Dolly Parton has landed the highest UK chart placement of her decades-spanning career.

On Friday evening, the Official Charts Company revealed that three of the late country music icon’s classic songs had made it into the Top 10 as fans continue to honour her legacy by revisiting her music.

As of this week, 9 To 5 is now Dolly’s highest-placing song ever in the UK, after reaching at number five.

The track was originally released in 1980 and appeared on the soundtrack of the film of the same name – but, surprisingly, missed the top 40 completely on this side of the Atlantic when it first came out.

Dolly’s previous highest-charting songs had been Jolene and Islands In The Stream, both of which landed at number seven.

Those two tracks continue to make a dent in the charts, with Jolene rising to number six and Islands In The Stream, a collaboration with the late Kenny Rogers, sitting at number nine.

Meanwhile, her greatest hits collections Diamonds & Rhinestones has risen one place to number five on the Official Album Chart, its highest entry yet.

Dolly’s back catalogue has seen a sharp increase in sales and streams since her death at the end of August, with several of her albums and songs returning to charts around the world.

The UK charts were full of momentous achievements this week, with Ella Langley earning her first-ever chart-topping single with Choosin’ Texas.

Her country song debuted at number 78 on the UK charts back in January, before cracking the Top 40 a month later, and finally rising to the Top 10 in July.

Ella replaces Sam Fender and Olivia Dean at number one, ending a run of 10 weeks in the top spot for their duet Rein Me In, which had previously set a new record with 23 non-consecutive weeks in peak position.

Rein Me In is still in the top 10, but has fallen to number seven, its lowest placement since February.

Writer, activist and feminist trailblazer Gloria Steinem has died at the age of 92.

Her spokesperson confirmed that, on 2 September, she passed “peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her”.

Paying tribute, they wrote on Instagram: “Gloria’s near-century on earth were years well-lived, and she continued working for equality until the very end.

“Gloria’s greatest gift was her ability to listen to others, to make others feel seen and heard.

“Her words, actions, and example gave people permission to be their truest selves. Gloria lived true to her independent spirit, always with curiosity and a great sense of humour.”

Here are six of the defining moments from her life and career, many of which go to show what a pivotal figure she was in amplifying the second-wave feminist movement and ensuring women’s voices were heard.

1. She went undercover as a Playboy Bunny in the 1960s – and wrote an article all about it

Trying to carve out as career as a journalist was no mean feat for a woman in the 1950s and 60s, however Steinem persevered and gained national attention in ’63 when she went undercover as a Playboy Bunny and penned a two-part series for Show magazine on what it was really like for women to work at the Playboy Club, including what they were paid and some of the sexist practices that went on behind the scenes.

2. She penned ‘After Black Power, Women’s Liberation’ for New York Magazine in 1969

In April 1969, Steinem connected the fight for racial equality to that of gender equality in a New York Magazine essay which won her national attention and helped to spread feminist ideas outside of small activist bubbles and into wider public awareness.

3. Steinem co-founded the National Women’s Political Caucus

The National Women’s Political Caucus (NWPC) was founded in 1971 by Steinem and fellow activists Shirley Chisholm; Betty Friedan; Fannie Lou Hamer and Bella Abzug, with an aim of identifying, recruiting, training and supporting women candidates for elected and appointed office in the United States.

In 1971 there were 15 women in US Congress, which rose to 150 women in 2026. Similarly, there were just seven female Mayors of cities with a population of over 30,000 people in 1971, compared to 428 in 2026.

4. She co-founded feminist publication Ms Magazine

In 1972, Steinem launched Ms Magazine, a national feminist publication, as she put it, “for those of us who had the radical idea that women are people”. The magazine covered topics typically unexplored in traditional women’s glossies, such as domestic abuse, sexual harassment, abortion, race and sexuality.

Reflecting on the publication’s success back in 2022, Steinem said: “The response was shocking … It sold out in eight days.”

5. She advocated strongly for reproductive rights

Steinem was a firm believer that women should have control over their bodies and reproductive choices. She opened up about her own abortion, at the age of 22, and even dedicated her book, My Life On The Road, to the London physician Dr John Sharpe, who carried out her abortion back when it was illegal to do so.

In 2011, she told The Guardian: “It [abortion] is supposed to make us a bad person. But I must say, I never felt that. I used to sit and try and figure out how old the child would be, trying to make myself feel guilty. But I never could!

“I think the person who said: ‘Honey, if men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament’ was right. Speaking for myself, I knew it was the first time I had taken responsibility for my own life. I wasn’t going to let things happen to me. I was going to direct my life, and therefore it felt positive.”

6. She repeatedly banged the drum for women’s and girls’ rights and equality

She has spoken publicly at hundreds of events over the years, including the Women’s March on Washington in 2017, all of which helped project women’s rights and issues into the forefront of discussion.

Per the National Women’s History Museum, she also co-founded: the Women’s Action Alliance, the Women’s Media Center, Voters for Choice and the Ms. Foundation for Women, as well as helping to create Take Our Daughters to Work Day, empowering young girls to learn about career opportunities.

In 2013, she was a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her work leading the women’s rights movement.

Dolly Parton has one last gift ready for her fans ― but they’ll have to wait until 2045 to hear it.

The legendary 9 To 5 singer spoke with HuffPost last year about the secret song she has buried in a time capsule at her beloved Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort.

Unfortunately, we have nearly 20 years until we can all hear it.

“It’s not supposed to be open till I’ll be 100, and which, that’s the day after tomorrow,” she quipped at the time.

“So I’m not supposed to say what it is, and who knows, I may be there to sing it,” the singer said at the time, though she also told HuffPost there’s no chance “they’ll let me dig it up” right now.

Dolly added: “I’ve wanted to say to them a time or two, ‘That song was so good! Can I just put another song in there? Can I dig that one up? Put something else?’. I thought, ‘No, that’s just a deal we made, and we’ll see’.”

“Some of you will be around!” the Grammy winner said of the 2045 release date, and added that the song “had a lot of meaning” to her.

“I thought very long and hard about what it should be saying, at that time,” she said. “So if there’s a way of playing it with the web music, and everything changes now, then I guess you’ll hear it then. If it’s disintegrated or something, then I guess you’ll know that I meant well.”

Dolly’s family announced on Tuesday that the iconic singer and philanthropist had died at the age of 80 in a heartfelt video posted to her social media accounts.

The late star’s nephew and head of security, Bryan Seaver, spoke in the video.

He explained: “Dolly called me and said she wants to rest in a beautiful bed of plush cotton, because after a life wearing heavy rhinestones, she finally deserves to be comfortable and have some rest. Rest in peace, Aunt Dolly.”

Dolly’s reps later confirmed that the singer died after a “brief battle with cancer.”

The singer-songwriter asked that, in lieu of flowers, friends and fans donate to her Imagination Library foundation, which aims to ensure that all children have access to books.

As the world mourns Dolly Parton, a surge in streams has seen some of her biggest hits soaring back up the UK singles chart.

On Friday evening, the Official Charts Company revealed that the pioneering country star’s signature hit Jolene had re-entered the top 10, sitting at number nine.

Just behind at 12 was another of Dolly’s hits, 9 To 5, which previously peaked at number 47 in the UK upon its release in 1981, marking a new chart high for the classic tune.

A third showing for Dolly in this week’s top 40 comes in the form of her Kenny Rogers duet Islands In The Stream, which is currently number 13, while her hits collection Diamonds & Rhinestones is the fifth biggest album in the UK this week.

“Dolly Parton’s extraordinary legacy continues to shine through the Official Charts,” the Official Charts Company’s co-managing directors said in a statement on Friday.

“To see Jolene, 9 to 5 and Islands In The Stream return to the Top 40, alongside Diamonds & Rhinestones reaching the Albums Chart Top 10, is a powerful reflection of the UK’s enduring love for her music.

“A true icon whose songs have crossed generations, these chart returns are a fitting celebration of Dolly’s incredible life, career and lasting impact.”

Dolly began her recording career in the 1960s, going on to release 49 studio albums in her lifetime, culminating in 2023’s Rockstar, which preceded her induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Over the course of her music career, Dolly secured 11 Grammys and 10 Country Music Association Awards, including lifetime achievement wins from both organisations.

In addition to her career as a singer-songwriter, Dolly was also an established actor, appearing in films like Steel Magnolias and 9 To 5, as well as a celebrated philanthropist, most notably co-founding the Imagination Library initiative, which aimed to ensure that all children had access to books.

How Nicole Kidman Feels About Adéla Naming A Song After Her

Adéla has received Nicole Kidman’s personal seal of approval after revealing she has a new song named after the Oscar winner.

The Ain’t In LA singer is currently gearing up for the release of her debut album Prima next week, the tracklisting for which she unveiled on Tuesday.

During this announcement, it was revealed that, after opening track KGB, the second track on Prima is named simply Nicole Kidman – which has already caught the attention of the woman herself.

On Wednesday night, Nicole attended the London premiere of her film Practical Magic 2, where she was caught on camera being asked by one fan if she knew “who Adéla is”.

After some initial confusion, the Australian star quickly enthused: “Oh yes! She is [releasing a song named Nicole Kidman]! I do know! She’s Slovakian, right?”

“I hope it’s nice,” Nicole then said, to which the fan was heard assuring her: “It will be, everyone loves you.”

Nicole added: “I absolutely know who she is – and she’s coming to Nashville and I’m going to go and see her.”

Slovak pop sensation Adéla first rose to global prominence on the Netflix talent search Dream Academy.

While she didn’t make it into the finished girl group produced on the show (now up and running as Katseye), she has since embarked on a successful solo career.

Her latest single Ain’t In LA has already become her biggest hit to date thanks to its TikTok virality, charting on both sides of the Atlantic, including a top 40 placement here in the UK.

Explaining the meaning behind her new album title, she said in a recent press release: “Prima means ‘first’, which is perfect since this is my debut.”

“Being a prima ballerina means you’re the top dog or the best ballerina in the house,” she continued. “It’s a term of endearment in the ballerina community. I’m trying to be the prima ballerina of pop, and this is my first step to achieve that.”

Meanwhile, Nicole recently had a “prima” pop moment of her own, taking the lead in the new Troye Sivan music video for his single She’s The Best…

A perpetual scene-stealer, the British star made his start in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a role with which he’s still synonymous today, before trying his hand at everything from chilling horror and action to family-friendly adventure and cheeky comedy.

Following the news of his death at the age of 80, we’re taking a moment to celebrate the roles that helped Tim become a beloved household name…

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

Alright, this might be a bit of an obvious one, but we could hardly do a round-up of Tim Curry roles without mentioning Rocky Horror, could we?

Tim originated the role of Frank-N-Furter during the musical’s original theatrical run in London, before taking the role to the big screen in the mid-1970s.

Inarguably the cult musical’s most iconic figure, Tim also delivered a number of stand-out musical performances as Frank-N-Furter including the boisterous I Can Make You A Man, the surprisingly touching I’m Going Home and, of course, the scene-stealing Sweet Transvestite, one of the film’s signature numbers.

Annie (1982)

Carrying on with the musical theme, Tim returned to the big screen a few years after Rocky Horror when he was cast as Miss Hannigan’s henchman and brother, Rooster, in the first screen adaptation of Annie.

For his work in Annie, Tim shared the screen with TV icon Carol Burnett, with the cast also featuring the likes of Albert Finney, Bernadette Peters and Aileen Quinn in the title role.

Clue (1985)

Considering where the entertainment has wound up today with adaptations of existing IP, it might come as a surprise to learn that the film adaptation of the board game Cluedo from the mid-1980s is actually a laugh riot.

Now considered a cult classic, Tim chewed the scenery as the fabulous butler Wadsworth, alongside a cast that featured great character actors like Christopher Lloyd, Madeline Kahn and Eileen Brennan.

In a fun gimmick, when Clue was originally released, different endings were distributed, meaning there was a different outcome depending on where you watched it (though in modern reprints, all versions are included).

It (1990)

Bill Skarsgård’s take on Stephen King’s manifestation of evil, Pennywise The Clown, was chilling stuff, but to many, Tim’s version of the character is the real stuff of nightmares.

In 1990, he played the villainous figure in a TV miniseries based on the classic horror novel, which aired in two instalments on the US network ABC.

While the show initially divided opinion, It – and in, particular, Tim Curry’s performance – is now much more popular among fans of the horror genre.

Home Alone 2: Lost In New York (1992)

Considering where he started out, the 1990s proved to be a decade of family-friendly roles for Tim Curry, beginning with this festive sequel.

In the follow-up to Home Alone, he portrayed the concierge at the Plaza Hotel, which at that time was owned by future US president Donald Trump (who even makes a cameo in it, in a moment many prefer to fast-forward when revisiting the Christmas classic).

His character, Mr Hector, was a foil to Macaulay Culkin’s mischievous counterpart, originally introduced in the 1990 original.

Muppet Treasure Island (1996)

Tim was visibly having a blast when he got to play alongside The Muppets in their second big-screen literary adaptation, Muppet Treasure Island.

Playing the swashbuckling villain Long John Silver, he claimed in his 2025 memoir Vagabond was “the most delightful cinematic experience I’ve enjoyed”.

“It’s just a world of fun and I’d been glued to the TV show. I had no hesitation about working with them,” he added. “I cannot overstate how much I adored working with the Muppets.”

This certainly shone through in his performance, which is one of the strongest aspects of the family adventure movie.

The Wild Thornberrys (1998)

Besides his on-screen and stage career, Tim was also a prolific voice actor.

Perhaps his most famous animated role was as the patriach Nigel Thornberry in The Wild Thornberries, a character he voiced in all five seasons of the original show and its two spin-off movies.

In the US series, the Thornberry family is a group of adventurers who travel the world documenting animals in their natural habitats, with the cast also including future Mean Girls star Lacey Chabert and Red Hot Chilli Peppers musician Flea.

Charlie’s Angels (2000)

Tim made a small – but nonetheless memorable – appearance in the film adaptation of Charlie’s Angels, which crash-landed into cinemas in 2000.

Initially, viewers are led to believe that his character, owner of the tech company Redstar, is the villain of the piece, until several twists reveal this not to be the case.

While there’s no denying this movie belongs to its female leads, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu, Tim always made the most of whatever role he was given, and Charlie’s Angels was no exception.

Will & Grace (2004)

Tim’s Will & Grace stint lasted just two episodes, but it was nonetheless a memorable one, not least thanks to a prolonged kiss he shared with both Megan Mullally’s iconic character Karen Walker and his own on-screen brother, John Cleese.

His guest appearance came towards of the show’s sixth season, as Karen prepares to marry the rich Lyle Finster.

These episodes were also notable as they marked the beginning of a multi-episode storyline featuring none other than Jennifer Lopez as herself.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 (2008)

Alright, this oft-forgotten video game might seem like a strange inclusion on a round-up of must-see Tim Curry roles.

But his live-action performance as Colonel Anatoly Cherdenko was so off-the-wall, so eccentric and so delightfully Tim Curry that it continues to go viral almost 20 years after the game was originally released.

After his stroke in 2012, Tim made only a few on-screen appearances, but he returned to his roots in this TV special based on The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Starring Emmy winner Laverne Cox as a new take on Frank-N-Furter, Tim took on the role of The Criminologist, played in the original film by Charles Gray.

While Let’s Do The Time Warp Again may not have quite gone down a storm with Rocky Horror fans, there was no denying how great it felt to see Tim back on screen, particularly in the franchise that had launched him to fame more than 40 years earlier.

But the announcements didn’t stop there.

Immediately after the news about The Gentlemen’s future, the streaming giant confirmed that it was greenlighting returns for a string of hit shows – including a few updates that fans have waiting a long time for.

Here’s a quick round-up of all the series that Netflix teased comebacks for as part of Monday’s mass announcement…

House Of Guinness will get a season 2

James Norton, Louis Partridge and Anthony Boyle in House Of Guinness

A historical drama about the famous brewing dynasty, the show premiered in September 2025 – meaning fans have been waiting for confirmation about a season two for the better part of a year.

Finally, it’s been revealed that more episodes are in the works, with Anthony Boyle, Louis Partridge and James Norton all expected to return.

Steven Knight told Netflix’s Tudum: “It was such a joy to bring the Guinness story to the screen, so I’m beyond thrilled to be continuing the story of one of the world’s greatest dynasties into season two.

“I can’t wait to dive deeper into these characters and their complex relationships as they expand the Guinness empire […] there’s so much more to find out about them. We’ll see how they grow up because House Of Guinness is about a family growing up together.

“Even in season one, they change quite a bit. In season two, it will be interesting to see what changes and what stays the same.”

Legends

Speculation about whether Legends would get a season two – and how exactly that might work – has been rife ever since the show premiered back in May.

Helmed by The Gold creator Neil Forsyth and led by a sprawling all-star cast that includes Steve Coogan and Tom Burke, the six-part series was a hit with viewers, presenting a dramatic retelling of a real-life British heist that took place in the early 1990s.

Because it was inspired by true events, some wondered exactly how a second season of Legends would work, but Netflix has now revealed that we’re about to find out.

Neil Forsyth enthused: ““I’m delighted to have the opportunity to tell a new story in the fascinating and unique world that Legends offers, and to show just how dangerous, thrilling, and important their work became in the late 1990s.”

Meanwhile, Netflix has teased that the new episodes will see “the unlikely team” being “drawn back into the world of undercover maneuvering, with the outside world none the wiser”.

Back in January, Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker announced that an eighth run of his dystopian technological anthology series was in the works – so it’s not exactly news that it is returning.

However, on Monday, Netflix announced that production is now underway, although they were predictably cryptic when it came to revealing any more.

“Production has already begun. And that’s all we can say,” the wrote in an X post.

“Black Mirror will return, and hopefully it’ll be more Black Mirror than ever,” Charlie Brooker told Tudum earlier this year.

He added: “I can confirm that Black Mirror will return, just in time for reality to catch up with it. So, that’s exciting. That chunk of my brain has already been activated and is whirring away.

“It’s a useful thought experiment when approaching a new story. I’ll often think of, ‘Well, what haven’t we done yet, and what tone am I looking for? … Where does this track come on the album, and what musical direction are we going to go into?’. We’ll find out.”

Onto reality and docuseries territory now, with the news that Gordon Ramsay is once again letting Netflix’s cameras back into his life.

The streaming service announced on Monday that production on a second season of Gordon Ramsay had already begun, enthusing: “Unbelievably we’ve been let back inside Gordon’s kitchen *and* home as he attempts to balance ever-expanding business ventures with family life.

“Good luck, chef!”

At Home With The Furys

The fate of the reality series At Home With The Furys has also been confirmed, with more episodes now in the pipeline.

Netflix revealed that production on the third season is now up and running, teasing: “Follow along as the whole family relocates to the Isle of Man, Venezuela gets married to Noah, and Tyson prepares for a potential blockbuster showdown with Anthony Joshua.”

“A quiet season, then,” they quipped.
