Bridgerton’s Season 4 Coming Out Scene Is ‘Hugely Important’, Says Showrunner

The latest season of Bridgerton has received widespread praise for its touching coming out scene, which sees Benedict opening up to Sophie about his sexuality.

Luke Thompson’s character was confirmed to be queer during the show’s third run, where he was seen engaging in trysts with both men and women.

Benedict is Bridgerton’s first openly queer lead character, and his coming out scene took the show’s writers into new territory.

“I am capable of caring for you, just as I have cared for women I have known who are of the Ton,” he told Yerin Ha’s character, Sophie, in season four’s sixth episode, which premiered on Netflix last week.

“Just as I have cared for some men whom I have known intimately,” he added. “And I refuse to be at all ashamed about that.”

Since the episode’s release, showrunner Jess Brownell has explained why it was “hugely important” to her that this scene be included.

“I think any queer person knows that no matter who you end up with, queerness is a part of your identity,” Jess told Business Insider. “It never goes away. And I think one of the messages of this show every season is that the only way to truly be loved is to be your true self.”

After Benedict’s coming out, Sophie assures him: “Love is always a thing to be proud of. The world needs more of it.”

But to Jess, there was never any doubt about how the character would react.

“Sophie is someone who’s been through so much and has lived in the downstairs world and been friends with people of all different classes,” she claimed. “And I do think she’s probably encountered people of different sexualities.”

Before the series was released, Jess stressed that it was “really important” to her that Benedict’s queerness remain a key part of his character, including after he began to pursue a romantic relationship with a woman.

“There is a really harmful and untrue stereotype that bisexual men are actually just gay men. More often, we see bisexual men ending up in media in homosexual-presenting relationships,” Jess told Variety last year.

“And it felt fresh and important to see a bisexual man ending up in a heterosexual-presenting relationship and still owning the fact that he is still queer.”

Benedict is not the only queer character in the world of Bridgerton.

Jess has previously said that Hannah Dodd’s Francesca will enter a same-sex relationship in a future season.

At the end of Bridgerton’s third outing, Francesca is introduced to her husband John’s female cousin, Michaeala Stirling.

Fans of Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton book series will know that in the novels, this character is written as a man called Michael, with whom Francesca finds love after John suddenly dies.

However, he has been gender-swapped for the TV adaptation, with Michaela being played by Masali Baduza.

Bridgerton Stars Make Very Unsexy Admission About Filming That Steamy Staircase Scene

Across the last four seasons, Bridgerton has become famous for not holding back when it comes to its many sex scenes.

While last season featured that infamous carriage scene between Penelope and Colin, the most recent chapter in the Netflix period drama saw Benedict and Sophie getting steamy in the stairwell.

So, what was it like filming the scene?

Well, according to cast member Luke Thompson, it was actually pretty rough because he and co-star Yerin Ha kept falling ill.

“What we actually did is we both got ill,” he admitted to E! News.

Meanwhile, Yerin, who plays Sophie, explained how sex scenes may look fun to viewers but are challenging to make, especially when under the weather.

The Australian actor also admitted that the staircase hookup scene had to be moved back in the schedule due to her and Luke’s illness.

“We were very mentally a little bit weak, a little bit nervous, my immune system was down,” Yerin added.

Luckily, their intimacy coordinator, Lizzie Talbot, made shooting the memorable moment a “quite seamless” process.

“When you have trust with a great scene partner like Luke, it always just comes together quite naturally,” Yerin told People.

She added: “It’s funny, because those Bridgerton steamy, sex scenes – or whatever you want to call them – they don’t feel like they’re there just for the sake of it. They’re actually an extension of the storytelling, and it is quite poetic and they’re there for an actual purpose.”

This season focuses on the class divide between Sophie, who works as a maid, and the aristocratic Benedict, which is how the symbolic location for the sex scene came to be.

“It is upstairs, downstairs, and they meet in the middle, and it’s like, what does that represent? And what story are we trying to say in that moment exactly?” Yerin added.

Part one of Bridgerton season four is now streaming on Netflix. Part two premieres on 26 February.

Bridgerton Newcomer Yerin Ha Teases 1 Major Difference In Season 4

Previously, every Bridgerton sibling who fronted their season has found romance in their own upper classes. Season four, though, is taking a bit of a different approach with its lead love story.

This latest run of episodes will see Luke Thompson’s Benedict Bridgerton becoming enamoured with a mysterious “Lady In Silver” at a masquerade ball.

Little does he know, the woman he has fallen for is Yerin Ha’s Sophie, who works as a maid for the demanding Lady Araminta Gun (played by Katie Leung).

Unlike Daphne’s romance with Simon, the Duke of Hastings, Colin’s relationship with childhood friend Penelope, or Anthony and Kate Sharma’s marriage, this pairing sees love forming through a class divide.

While maids have existed in the show, including Lorraine Ashbourne’s Mrs Varley, they have always played a background role when it comes to the romance.

Newcomer Yerin Ha thinks it’s a “blessing” to see the Netflix show explore an upstairs-downstairs style romance.

“I think it just really opens up whole new doors for Bridgerton. I think it grounds, it makes it more realistic-ish. It’s less pretty and shiny and glamorous, which I think is quite nice,” Yerin told Metro.

“It’s the fourth season now, so it’s nice to have a change of energy and pace. I’m excited for the audiences to see that.”

Luke Thompson, who has been in the period drama since the first series, agreed with his on-screen love interest and appreciated the show taking a different direction in its fourth series.

“It’s sort of baked into the story, in a way, isn’t it? In a story that does seem to be about fantasy and reality, it is about the performance of the Tom and then suddenly you get a stronger flavour of the real world in Bridgerton, what reality means in Bridgerton, which I think is really interesting, because the Ton world can feel like a bit of a bubble sometimes,” he said.

Adjoa Andoh, who plays Lady Danbury, also praised season four for its “freshness” and for exploring the class divide in British society.

“Our show is not a sociology project, but even to discuss class in this way is really lovely to see,” she said. “What does keep the glittering household going? It’s those people downstairs. So what are their lives like and what happens when the two worlds actually cross over?” Adjoa added.

Bridgerton season four, part one premieres on Thursday January 29 on Netflix.

But Knives Out seems to be gloriously bucking that trend based on the glowing reception the third film has received from fans and critics alike.

Wake Up Dead Man sees Daniel Craig return with his usual southern drawl and thirst for a juicy murder mystery to solve. This time, it centres on a dead priest and his flock of suspicious characters, meaning we’ve got pews full of new characters to get to know.

Ever since his big breakthrough as a binge-drinking sheep farmer who falls in love with a Romanian migrant worker in God’s Own Country in 2017, it’s been an upward trajectory for Josh.

He picked up an Emmy Award for his role as Prince Charles in Netflix series The Crown and also starred opposite Anya Taylor-Joy in the 2020 adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma.

Josh had another huge moment when Challengers and its steamy tennis love triangle – completed by Zendaya and Mike Faist – became the film of 2024. With it, he accidentally ushered in the ‘hot rodent boyfriend’ movement that dominated the summer, making him a well-known face across pop culture in general.

You might have recently clocked Josh in Weapons, aka the best horror movie of the year, but he first became famous for appearing in the classic 1980s film The Goonies.

While he followed it up with a handful of other movies like Guillermo Del Toro’s Mimic, his portrayal of Llewelyn Moss in 2007 neo-Western No Country for Old Men is largely considered to have ushered in the second act of his career.

Critics Are All Saying The Same Thing About Meghan Markle’s Festive Netflix Special

Meghan Markle’s much-derided Netflix lifestyle series may have come to an end – but it’s going out in a big way with one last instalment.

Yes, Wednesday morning saw the arrival of With Love, Meghan: Holiday Special, the first (and, presumably, only) festive special in the Duchess of Sussex’s two-season project which has seen her offering tips on everything from cooking and crafting to gardening and generally being a great first.

Seasons one and two of With Love, Meghan were slammed by critics upon their release earlier this year, with many reviews claiming that the show felt out of step with what’s going on in the world, particularly in light of the current social and economic climate.

And – surprise, surprise! – the Holiday Special has also been met with a similarly lukewarm response.

Here’s a selection of what critics are saying about With Love, Meghan’s seasonal swansong…

“That, mercifully, is the end. I feel both offended and harmed, but in the spirit of goodwill I will add a star to my rating in gratitude for the fact that at least we are safe now until next year. God bless us, every one.”

“I said a little prayer before watching With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration. Give me the strength, I muttered, to endure what is to come, and the grace not to give in to despair. I’ve been struggling since the trailer landed a couple of weeks ago, because it opened with Meghan, in wellies, dancing around Christmas trees shouting, ‘Hey-oh!’. Now the whole festive episode has arrived and it is more than we could have hoped for, or done to deserve.”

“You’ll be reaching for the Christmas spirits – make mine a double – within the first five minutes, as Meghan talks us through the basics. ‘Once a year, you get to do the tree thing’. Advent calendars ‘are about having a surprise every day for 24 days until you get to Christmas’. ’Tis the season to wrap gifts. You don’t say!

“This is reminiscent of the advice given by Pippa Middleton in Celebrate, that seminal work of non-fiction produced by the Princess of Wales’s sister, which recommended serving turkey on Christmas Day and going stargazing at night-time because that’s when it’s dark.”

“It’s not a real special by any stretch, but some YouTube content or the radio that you might put on in the background as you do your tree or wrap your presents. White noise to dull the senses. It’s all a little Stepford Wives; not informative, fun, enjoyable or even aspirational.”

“Sometimes, people are given a platform because of who they are, rather than what they can bring, and With Love, Meghan gives me the same feeling as when I am around very wealthy people who think that making a salad with friends makes them ‘grounded’ and ‘relatable’. On the other hand, there’s something soothing, even enjoyable, about the show’s glossy inanity.”

“It’s hardly scintillating stuff, but Netflix has really hit its stride with this special episode of With Love, Meghan. They’re really leaning [into] the frantic energy of its star trying to crack puns without splashing hot oil or butter down her pristine cashmere sweaters. Honestly, the production team must be trolling Meghan here with increasingly bizarre and elaborate set-ups for her to impart hosting ‘hacks’. In fact, are they really hacks? They would make anyone actually hosting Christmas for a big group have a nervous breakdown before the canapes were served.”

Will The Beast In Me Get A Season 2? What We Know About The Netflix Show’s Future

Critics may not be unanimously sold on Netflix’s new thriller The Beast In Me, but that certainly hasn’t stopped people from bingeing the series in their droves.

Released on the platform last week, the eight-part mystery drama stars Homeland’s Claire Danes as a woman who begins to grow suspicious about her new next door neighbour, portrayed by Matthew Rhys.

At the time of writing, The Beast In Me was number one on Netflix’s list of most-watched shows in the UK, with those who’ve already binged it pondering whether the story could continue in some capacity.

With that in mind, we’ve got good news and bad news for fans of The Beast In Me hoping for more from the show…

So, will there be a season 2 of The Beast In Me on Netflix?

First, the bad. The Beast In Me is billed on Netflix as a “limited series”, and as anyone who’s now binge-watched all eight episodes will know, the story is a self-contained one that clearly wasn’t created with the intention of continuing the story.

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean there couldn’t be more from the drama in the future, as Netflix shows like Beef and Monster were originally conceived as one-offs, only to be brought back when they proved popular with viewers.

So, given that The Beast In Me has already soared to the top of Netflix’s most-watched chart, it’s definitely not beyond the realm of possibility that the team behind it might look at bringing it back.

What has the team behind The Beast In Me said about a possible season 2?

Asked about the possibility of more episodes in the future, Gordon told TV Insider: “The short answer is, I would say, sure […] I think there probably is a story there.”

But while – spoiler alert – Matthew Rhys would not be back for any future episodes, the showrunner also told TheWrap: “To the extent that Aggie is a writer who has been delivered to this next stage of her life, whatever that stage is… if there is a story, there might be more.”

He also teased: “I am tempted by the character of her grifter father in some way. We’ll see how the show does and if an idea comes. But I think they’d be open to more.”

Psycho Actor Anthony Perkins’ Son Lays Into Monster Season 3

The son of actor Anthony Perkins has called out the inclusion of the Psycho star in the controversial Netflix series Monster.

Earlier this month, the third season of Monster began streaming, focussing on the horrific crimes of serial killer and grave-robber Ed Gein, whose actions inspired the murderous fictional characters in movies like The Texas Chainshaw Massacre, The Silence Of The Lambs and Psycho.

One episode centres around the creation of Psycho, with Tom Hollander and Joey Pollari playing its director and star, Alfred Hitchcock and Anthony Perkins.

Following its debut, the show received criticism from many viewers over the way the show hinted at a link between the latter and Ed Gein, because of the way the actor chose to conceal his sexuality publicly in his lifetime.

Speaking to TMZ, Anthony’s son Osgood Perkins (the director behind recent horror movies like Longlegs and The Monkey) claimed he “wouldn’t watch” the series “with a 10-foot pole”.

He also slammed streaming platforms for “glamourising” the true-crime genre and which he said is “increasingly devoid of context”, while lamenting that “the Netflix-isation of real pain” is “playing for the wrong team”.

Oz told People magazine last year that the way his parents concealed his father’s sexuality from him when he was growing up was part of the inspiration for his movie Longlegs.

“Everybody knew it, even my brother and I theoretically knew it, but we were never given any language for it,” he claimed.

“The idea that [my mother] could make up – not make up, it’s not a lie – but it’s like a cover, a storytime…”

He said that Longlegs became “the most baroque horror version of, ‘What’s going on in my household?’”, noting: “Every kid probably feels [that] to some greater or lesser extent. But if your father’s a public movie star and you don’t know who he is, that’s a little bit more profound.”

Despite the controversy around all three seasons of Monster so far, the show has continued to be popular with Netflix users, with a fourth currently in the works, based on another famous case from history.

Bridgerton bosses have revealed that fans’ next trip to The Ton is mere months away.

It’s now been over a year since the latest instalment of the Netflix period drama, which broke from the order of the original novel series in order to bring fans the love story between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington, played by fan-favourites Luke Newton and Nicola Coughlan.

On Monday morning, Netflix shared an exciting preview video for season four, which revealed some good news and bad news for Bridgerton devotees.

First, the good news: Bridgerton will be back on our screens early next year.

Unfortunately, not all of the news is positive however, with Netflix once again making the decision to split the season in two, the first part of which will arrive on Thursday 29 January 2026, followed by a second drop four weeks later, on 26 February.

It was previously confirmed that the new batch of episodes will focus on Benedict Bridgerton, portrayed in the first three seasons by Luke Thompson.

While Benedict has previously taken a somewhat more fast-and-loose approach to romance, the new season will see him falling in love with a new character, played by Yerin Ha, who meets him at a much-hyped masquerade ball.

An official Netflix synopsis previously teased: “The fourth season of Bridgerton turns its focus to bohemian second son Benedict. Despite his elder and younger brothers both being happily married, Benedict is loath to settle down – until he meets a captivating Lady in Silver at his mother’s masquerade ball.”

Other new additions to the cast include Michelle Mao, Isabella Wei and Katie Leung, previously best known for her work as Cho Chang in the Harry Potter movies.

The first three seasons of Bridgerton, as well as the spin-off prequel series Queen Charlotte, are available to stream now on Netflix.
