Kemi Badenoch’s Popularity Hits New Low As Tory Crisis Deepens

Kemi Badenoch’s popularity has hit a new low as she struggles to turn around the Tories’ fortunes, according to a new poll.

The Ipsos survey shows that just 17% of the public have a favourable view towards her.

That is the lowest ever recorded for her by the pollster, and a worse rating than both Boris Johnson (26%) and Rishi Sunak (21%).

Meanwhile, 49% of voters have an unfavourable view of her, giving her a net score of minus 32.

The most popular politician in the country, according to the poll, is Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who has a favourability rating of 31%.

Boris Johnson is second, followed by Lib Dem leader Ed Davey on 25% and Keir Starmer on 23%.

Robert Jenrick, who Badenoch beat to the Tory leadership last year, has a favourability rating of just 16%, the same as chancellor Rachel Reeves.

In a further blow for Badenoch, just 20% of the public have a favourable view of the Conservative Party, putting them behind Reform, the Greens, the Lib Dems and Labour.

The Tories’ unfavourability rating of 56% is also far worse than any of their rival’s.

The findings come after a YouGov poll earlier this week put the Tories in fourth place behind Reform, Labour and the Lib Dems.

Gideon Skinner, senior director of UK Politics at Ipsos, said: “While Labour has seen a slight bump in favourability, most people still think the country is heading in the wrong direction and are critical of the prime minister and chancellor.

“In contrast, Nigel Farage and his party continue to be buoyed by very high approval ratings among their own base, even though they are more divisive among Labour, Lib Dem and Green supporters.

“The Conservatives, though, face perhaps the toughest picture, with Kemi Badenoch’s rating dipping to its lowest level as Conservative leader and the party’s overall favourability continuing to be the lowest of any party polled.

“The Conservatives are finding it particularly difficult to rebuild after their losses in the 2024 election, but both the main two parties are struggling with public disillusionment with the established political order, and a potential appetite for alternative voices in British politics from both sides of the spectrum.”

Kemi Badenoch Humiliated As Shadow Minister Breaks Ranks To Praise UK-US Trade Deal

Kemi Badenoch has been embarrassed after one of her shadow cabinet broke ranks with her to praise the US-UK trade deal.

Andrew Griffith, the shadow trade secretary, said the agreement “will be welcomed by exporting businesses”.

His intervention came just minutes after Badenoch said the UK had been “shafted” by Donald Trump.

Under the terms of the deal, import tariffs on British steel and aluminium being sold to America will be reduced from 25% to zero.

Tariffs on a maximum of 100,000 British cars being exported to the US will also be cut from 27.5% to 10%.

In addition, farmers in America and Britain will be able to sell beef into each other’s countries. However, the ban on hormone-treated beef coming into the UK will stay in place.

Keir Starmer said it was a “historic” deal that will save thousands of British jobs.

But posting on X, Badenoch condemned the agreement, referring referring to a US government graphic showing that, overall, the UK had cut tariffs on American imports while America has trebled those on British goods.

But Griffith said: “The reduction in tariffs announced today will be welcomed by exporting businesses. The ability to strike our own free deals is a Brexit benefit and I hope this moves us conclusively into an era where this government is committed to preserve that freedom.

“Conservatives have been consistent in their support for trade agreements and the reduction of tariffs and today is the continuation of a process which started under the first Trump presidency.”

Labour leapt on the Tory disarray, posting on X: “Your own shadow trade secretary has rightly welcomed the deal Kemi Badenoch.

“Keir Starmer’s Labour government has negotiated and secured an historic UK-US trade deal. Kemi Badenoch can’t even negotiate with her own shadow cabinet.”

‘Total And Utter Rubbish’: Kemi Badenoch In War Of Words With India Over UK Trade Deal

Kemi Badenoch has become embroiled in a war of words with India over the country’s trade deal with the UK.

The Tory leader has criticised tax breaks for Indian workers in the UK which are a key part of the agreement brokered by Keir Starmer’s government.

Under the arrangement, workers seconded to the UK from India-based companies will be exempt from paying National Insurance for three years.

The same arrangement will be put in place for British employees in India.

Badenoch has described it as a “two-tier” tax arrangement which will harm British workers by making it cheaper to employ those from India.

But the Financial Times reported that Badenoch agreed to a similar arrangement when she was trade secretary in the last Tory government, although a final deal was never agreed.

One Indian official told the paper: “The Tories offered us two years but we said it wasn’t enough. They put it on the table. We wanted more than three, but the principle had already been conceded in return for some gives on our sides on services.”

Another said: “It’s amazing. It was on the table when she was trade secretary.”

Responding on X, Badenoch described the story as “fake news”.

She said: “This is total and utter rubbish. I never agreed to any such tax deal. The evidence couldn’t be clearer — I refused to sign the deal. As I have always said – No Deal is Better Than a Bad Deal.”

Downing Street has insisted that similar tax arrangements are included in trade deals the UK has with around 50 other countries.

Despite the row, Badenoch did not raise the issue at prime minister’s questions today.

A Labour spokesperson said: “Kemi Badenoch has been caught out by her own hypocrisy again. She says one thing but she has done another.

“Instead of rallying behind the biggest trade deal since Brexit, she is so desperate to criticise the government she has attacked her own record.

“It is her style to put party before country, so it is no wonder that she failed to deliver an agreement that will deliver an annual £4.8 billion boost for British businesses, create more jobs, raise wages by more than £2 billion a year and bring down prices for hard-pressed consumers.”

Tory Splits Erupt Over Kemi Badneoch’s Call For Council Coalitions With Reform UK

Kemi Badenoch has been slammed by a senior Tory after she appeared to give the green light for Conservative councillors to do coalition deals with Reform UK.

Andy Street said the Tories “should have nothing to do with” Nigel Farage’s party.

Badenoch raised eyebrows last week when she said she would not have a problem with Conservative and Reform councillors joining forces to run town halls after the local elections on May 1.

She said: “What I’m telling local leaders across the country [is] they have to do what is right for the people in their local area.”

But in a major humiliation for the Tory leader, her offer was quickly rejected by Farage himself.

On BBC1′s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg this morning, Street, the former mayor of the West Midlands, also dismissed Badenoch’s suggestion.

He said: “It’s not my decision in any way, but my feeling on it is that we should have nothing to do with alliances with them, just as Kemi has said about the national situation.

“We’ve got to put in front of voters the choice – a moderate, centre-right Conservative Party against a populist party that do not have a policy answer to any of the big questions.”

On the same programme, shadow business secretary Andrew Griffith backed his leader.

He said: “There’s always been, after elections, for local councillors themselves to decide how they run the local council. If that is needed, then historically people have done deals on a local level with all sorts of groups.

“I think the Lib Dems are quite extremist – whenever they get into power they want four-day weeks and veganism – but no one should take that off the table because those are decisions for local councillors.”

He added: “I think Kemi is reflecting the reality that we have local democracy and if people stand for local councils and they want to do the best for their communities, then they will have to, in light of how people have voted, work out what the right combination is.”

Kemi Badenoch Under Fire For ‘Disgraceful’ Comments After Israel Refused Entry To UK MPs

Kemi Badenoch is facing backlash for supporting Israel after the country refused entry to two Labour MPs.

Yuan Yang and Abtisam Mohamed travelled to Israel and were planning to go on to the West Bank, but they – together with their aides – were questioned by the Israeli authorities and turned back on Saturday.

They were allegedly suspected of planning to “document the activities of security forces and spread anti-Israel hatred”, according to a statement from the Israeli immigration ministry.

While the UK government has made it clear this was “unacceptable”, Badenoch has suggested otherwise.

Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, the Conservative leader said: “Countries should be able to control their borders.

“What I think is shocking is that we have MPs in Labour who other countries will not allow through. I think that is very significant.”

She added: “If you look at the reasons the Israeli government has given, they don’t believe [the MPs] are going to comply with their laws. MPs do not have diplomatic immunity. I believe the people who represent us in parliament should be able to go anywhere in the world and people not be worried about what they’re going to do.”

She added the UK “does the same thing” and refuses entry to plenty of people.

“I don’t think we should be setting precedents in a different way,” she said.

However, just hours later, the Tory shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, Richard Fuller, seemed to contradict Badenoch during his own interview on Times Radio.

He said: “I haven’t seen the details of the MPs, whether on an official trip or a personal trip. But, you know, any member of parliament who goes on an official trip should be, I would think, welcomed in any country. They’re going there to be better informed about the situation and then report back to their parliamentary colleagues about what they have found.”

He added: “I think we should all be very worried about democracy. Democracy isn’t a guarantee in life. Freedom isn’t guaranteed.”

Meanwhile, foreign secretary David Lammy quickly slammed Badenoch’s comments on X.

He said: “It’s disgraceful you are cheerleading another country for detaining and deporting two British MPs.

“Do you say the same about Tory MPs banned from China?

“This government will continue to stand up for the rights of our MPs to speak their mind, whatever their party.”

Badenoch then hit back at the Labour politician, saying: “Unlike China, Israel is our ally and a democracy. A good Foreign Sec would be able to make that distinction.

“Perhaps Labour MPs could put UK national interest first and do their jobs instead of campaigning for airports in Kashmir or promoting Hamas propaganda in parliament.”

Kemi Badenoch has beaten Robert Jenrick to become the new leader of the Conservatives.

She received the support of 53,806 Tory members, compared to Jenrick’s 41,388 – a winning margin of more than 12,000 votes.

Her win marks the end of the prolonged four-month race to replace Rishi Sunak as leader of the opposition.

She also becomes the first black leader of a major British political party.

Badenoch served as the business and trade secretary in the last government and has been the shadow housing secretary since the Tories were kicked out of Downing Street.

She said the “huge job” ahead involves “the people we want to bring back to the Conservative Party”.

Badenoch said: “This is not just about the Conservative Party, it is about the people we want to bring back to the Conservative Party, it is about the people we need to bring into the Conservative Party.

“It is about what the Conservative Party needs to be over the next five, 10 and 20 years.

“Our party is critical to the success of our country, but to be heard we have to be honest – honest about the fact that we made mistakes, honest about the fact that we let standards slip.

“The time has come to tell the truth. The time has come to tell the truth, to stand up for our principles, to plan for our future, to reset our politics and our thinking, and to give our party, and our country, the new start that they deserve.

“It is time to get down to business, it is time to renew.”

The MP for North West Essex previously raised eyebrows by claiming she is “very, very wary” of saying she wants to become the next prime minister because the job “changes your life forever”.

Badenoch has also faced criticism for several controversies throughout her leadership campaign.

She bizarrely claimed that she had become working class at 16 after getting a job at McDonald’s.

On another occasion, Badenoch suggested not all “cultures are equally valid”.

During the Conservative conference, she also appeared to say that maternity pay is “excessive” before being forced to insist she meant the burden of regulation on business.

The MP has also been accused of endorsing a report which “stigmatised” autism, too.

Badenoch is expected to start assembling her shadow cabinet straight away, but it will not include former leadership candidate James Cleverly, who said he would be returning to the backbenches.

Former ministers Tom Tugendhat, Mel Stride and Priti Patel were all kicked out earlier in the contest having failed to secure enough votes from fellow Conservative MPs.

“With Kemi Badenoch in place as our new leader now is the time for the whole Party to unite and take the fight to Labour, the Liberal Democrats, SNP and Reform.”
