10 Iconic Voice Roles You Probably Had No Idea Were Played By Miriam Margolyes

Over the years, Miriam Margoyles has accumulated an eclectic array of acting roles, including performances in big-name franchises and even a Bafta win. However, what many people might not realise is that she is also a renowned voice actor.

The Call the Midwife star has lent her voice to adverts for brands such as Cadbury, PG Tips and Dolmio in her day, as well as contributing to audiobooks, animated features and even audio porn in the past.

Ahead of Miriam’s long-awaited debut in Doctor Who, where she’s set to voice Meep in the 60th anniversary special episode, we’re looking back at some of the more unexpected places her voice has popped up in over the years…

Babe (1995)

Confused and sad, Babe is adopted by a friendly dog and slowly adjusts to his new home. Discovering that the fate of most pigs is the dinner table, Babe devotes himself to becoming a useful member of the farm by trying to learn how to herd sheep, despite the skepticism of the other animals and the kindly but conventional Farmer Hoggett (James Cromwell). Because technically impeccable animatronics and computer graphics allow the farm animals to converse easily among themselves, first-time director Chris Noonan can treat the film’s menagerie as actual characters, playing scene not for cuteness but for real emotions. The result is often surprisingly touching, with Noonan and George Miller’s script, based on Dick King-Smith’s children’s book and, indirectly, a true story, seamlessly combining gentle whimsy and sincere feeling. These same qualities are embodied by in Cromwell’s beautifully understated performance as Farmer Hoggett, which anchors the film. Despite its unlikely premise and low profile, Babe’s inspirational story was embraced by audiences and critics, and the movie became an international sleeper that won an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. Back in the mid-90s, Miriam moved into the world of movie voice acting when she played Fly, a sheepdog, in the beloved farmyard classic, Babe.

Based on Dick King-Smith’s book, The Sheep-Pig, the comedy-drama followed a young farm pig who wanted to do the work of a sheepdog.

The wholesome film exceeded expectations and went on to be nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Visual Effects. Miriam also reprised her role in the sequel, Babe: Pig in the City.

In this Roald Dahl adaptation, Miriam voiced the Glowworm as well as appearing on screen as James’ Aunt Sponge.

The musical film combined stop-motion animation and live-action segments and featured a star-studded cast including Richard Dreyfuss, Joanna Lumley, David Thewlis, Susan Sarandon and Jane Leeves.

Though it wasn’t a huge box office success, it was a firm favourite with fans of the original novel and with critics.

Disney’s latest film Encanto has officially made chart history, after a song from its soundtrack reached number one in the UK.

Encanto arrived in cinemas towards the end of the last year, and was made available to stream on Disney+ over the Christmas period.

In the weeks since, songs from the film’s soundtrack – written by Hamilton and In The Heights creator Lin-Manuel Miranda – have been slowly climbing up the chart, with We Don’t Talk About Bruno finally hitting number one this week.

The Official Charts Company confirmed on Friday evening that the group song We Don’t Talk About Bruno – performed by Rhenzy Feliz, Adassa, Stephanie Beatriz, Mauro Castillo, Diane Guerrero, and Carolina Gaitan – is the first ever original Disney song to top the UK singles chart.

Two additional songs from the soundtrack are also in the top 20 this week, with opening number The Family Madrigal at number 15 and Surface Pressure hitting a new peak at number five.

Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote all of the songs featured in Encanto

Encanto is the 60th film released by Walt Disney Animation Studios, which has had chart success in the last decade with songs from Frozen and its sequel.

Let It Go was the highest-performing song from the franchise, peaking at number 11 in the UK, with For The First Time In Forever, Do You Want To Build A Snowman? and Into The Known also peaking within the top 40.
