Bridgerton’s Season 4 Coming Out Scene Is ‘Hugely Important’, Says Showrunner

The latest season of Bridgerton has received widespread praise for its touching coming out scene, which sees Benedict opening up to Sophie about his sexuality.

Luke Thompson’s character was confirmed to be queer during the show’s third run, where he was seen engaging in trysts with both men and women.

Benedict is Bridgerton’s first openly queer lead character, and his coming out scene took the show’s writers into new territory.

“I am capable of caring for you, just as I have cared for women I have known who are of the Ton,” he told Yerin Ha’s character, Sophie, in season four’s sixth episode, which premiered on Netflix last week.

“Just as I have cared for some men whom I have known intimately,” he added. “And I refuse to be at all ashamed about that.”

Since the episode’s release, showrunner Jess Brownell has explained why it was “hugely important” to her that this scene be included.

“I think any queer person knows that no matter who you end up with, queerness is a part of your identity,” Jess told Business Insider. “It never goes away. And I think one of the messages of this show every season is that the only way to truly be loved is to be your true self.”

After Benedict’s coming out, Sophie assures him: “Love is always a thing to be proud of. The world needs more of it.”

But to Jess, there was never any doubt about how the character would react.

“Sophie is someone who’s been through so much and has lived in the downstairs world and been friends with people of all different classes,” she claimed. “And I do think she’s probably encountered people of different sexualities.”

Before the series was released, Jess stressed that it was “really important” to her that Benedict’s queerness remain a key part of his character, including after he began to pursue a romantic relationship with a woman.

“There is a really harmful and untrue stereotype that bisexual men are actually just gay men. More often, we see bisexual men ending up in media in homosexual-presenting relationships,” Jess told Variety last year.

“And it felt fresh and important to see a bisexual man ending up in a heterosexual-presenting relationship and still owning the fact that he is still queer.”

Benedict is not the only queer character in the world of Bridgerton.

Jess has previously said that Hannah Dodd’s Francesca will enter a same-sex relationship in a future season.

At the end of Bridgerton’s third outing, Francesca is introduced to her husband John’s female cousin, Michaeala Stirling.

Fans of Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton book series will know that in the novels, this character is written as a man called Michael, with whom Francesca finds love after John suddenly dies.

However, he has been gender-swapped for the TV adaptation, with Michaela being played by Masali Baduza.

All four seasons of Bridgerton are available to watch on Bridgerton now.

Claudia Winkleman Dismisses Claims ‘One Scandal Too Many’ Prompted Strictly Exit

Claudia Winkleman has insisted that the various controversies surrounding Strictly Come Dancing were not behind her decision to leave the show.

In October 2025, Claudia and her co-host Tess Daly shocked Strictly fans when, in the middle of the most recent series, they announced they would be stepping down as its presenters at the end of the year.

During a new interview with the Daily Mail, the Traitors host was asked if the pair’s decision to leave came after “one scandal too many” for the long-running BBC dance show, to which she responded: “Absolutely not.”

“It is a genuinely beautiful show to be part of. Almost every single person who’s taken part is happy they did,” she responded. “So no, it wasn’t that.”

Claudia also claimed that she and Tess had decided the most recent season of Strictly would be their last “about a year before” they made their official announcement.

She said at the time: “Strictly is a magical, glittery, fake tanned train and it’s been a privilege to be a tiny part of it. The extraordinary talent of the dancers, the band, the hair and makeup and costume teams, the unbelievable production crew and creatives – all utterly amazing.

“I’ve always believed it’s best to leave a party before you’re fully ready to go and I know the new hosts will be magnificent, I look forward to watching them take Strictly to new heights.

“As for Tess – I’m so so lucky I got to stand next to you. You’re funny, kind, whip smart and a true friend and I love you.”

Following her Strictly exit, Claudia is currently gearing up for the debut of her new BBC talk show, made by the same team as The Graham Norton Show.

The launch date for the seven-part series was confirmed earlier this week, as well as the line-up of celebrity guests who’ll be joining Claudia in her first episode.

Meanwhile, a host of celebrities have been rumoured to be in the running to replace Tess and Claudia on Strictly, ahead of the show’s return in the autumn.

The Claudia Winkleman Show: BBC Announces Start Date And Celebrity Line-Up For First Episode

The first guests to appear on Claudia Winkleman’s new BBC talk show have been unveiled.

Back in December, it was confirmed that Claudia had landed her own celebrity chat show, from the makers of The Graham Norton Show, after winning over viewers when she filled in for the Irish presenter earlier in 2025.

On Wednesday afternoon, the BBC announced the start date for The Claudia Winkleman show – and fans don’t have long to wait.

When does The Claudia Winkleman Show start – and which celebrities will be interviewed?

It’s been confirmed that the inaugural episode of The Claudia Winkleman Show will premiere on Friday 13 March at 10.40pm on BBC One – with a star-studded line-up of guests.

Joining Claudia for her first ever show will be Wicked star Jeff Goldblum, British screen treasure Jennifer Saunders, three-time Emmy nominee Vanessa Williams and comedian Josh Widdicombe.

The BBC previously revealed that the initial series will run for a total of seven episodes.

Self-deprecatingly as ever, the Traitors enthused (sort of…) last year: “I can’t quite believe it and I’m incredibly grateful to the BBC for this amazing opportunity.

“I’m obviously going to be awful, that goes without saying, but I’m over the moon they’re letting me try.”

Last year, Claudia and her Strictly Come Dancing co-host Tess Daly announced they were both stepping down from the long-running BBC reality series.

Since then, she’s fronted the hugely successful fourth season of The Traitors, with a second run of the show’s celebrity counterpart due to premiere in the autumn.

Claudia will also present the fourth season of the cult Channel 4 talent search The Piano later this year, alongside returning judges Mika and Jon Batiste.

Bridgerton Stars Make Very Unsexy Admission About Filming That Steamy Staircase Scene

Across the last four seasons, Bridgerton has become famous for not holding back when it comes to its many sex scenes.

While last season featured that infamous carriage scene between Penelope and Colin, the most recent chapter in the Netflix period drama saw Benedict and Sophie getting steamy in the stairwell.

So, what was it like filming the scene?

Well, according to cast member Luke Thompson, it was actually pretty rough because he and co-star Yerin Ha kept falling ill.

“What we actually did is we both got ill,” he admitted to E! News.

Benedict and Sophie's most romantic moment played out in a cliffhanger scene that took place on a staircase

Meanwhile, Yerin, who plays Sophie, explained how sex scenes may look fun to viewers but are challenging to make, especially when under the weather.

The Australian actor also admitted that the staircase hookup scene had to be moved back in the schedule due to her and Luke’s illness.

“We were very mentally a little bit weak, a little bit nervous, my immune system was down,” Yerin added.

Luckily, their intimacy coordinator, Lizzie Talbot, made shooting the memorable moment a “quite seamless” process.

“When you have trust with a great scene partner like Luke, it always just comes together quite naturally,” Yerin told People.

She added: “It’s funny, because those Bridgerton steamy, sex scenes – or whatever you want to call them – they don’t feel like they’re there just for the sake of it. They’re actually an extension of the storytelling, and it is quite poetic and they’re there for an actual purpose.”

This season focuses on the class divide between Sophie, who works as a maid, and the aristocratic Benedict, which is how the symbolic location for the sex scene came to be.

“It is upstairs, downstairs, and they meet in the middle, and it’s like, what does that represent? And what story are we trying to say in that moment exactly?” Yerin added.

Part one of Bridgerton season four is now streaming on Netflix. Part two premieres on 26 February.

Bridgerton Newcomer Yerin Ha Teases 1 Major Difference In Season 4

Previously, every Bridgerton sibling who fronted their season has found romance in their own upper classes. Season four, though, is taking a bit of a different approach with its lead love story.

This latest run of episodes will see Luke Thompson’s Benedict Bridgerton becoming enamoured with a mysterious “Lady In Silver” at a masquerade ball.

Little does he know, the woman he has fallen for is Yerin Ha’s Sophie, who works as a maid for the demanding Lady Araminta Gun (played by Katie Leung).

Unlike Daphne’s romance with Simon, the Duke of Hastings, Colin’s relationship with childhood friend Penelope, or Anthony and Kate Sharma’s marriage, this pairing sees love forming through a class divide.

While maids have existed in the show, including Lorraine Ashbourne’s Mrs Varley, they have always played a background role when it comes to the romance.

Newcomer Yerin Ha thinks it’s a “blessing” to see the Netflix show explore an upstairs-downstairs style romance.

“I think it just really opens up whole new doors for Bridgerton. I think it grounds, it makes it more realistic-ish. It’s less pretty and shiny and glamorous, which I think is quite nice,” Yerin told Metro.

“It’s the fourth season now, so it’s nice to have a change of energy and pace. I’m excited for the audiences to see that.”

Luke Thompson, who has been in the period drama since the first series, agreed with his on-screen love interest and appreciated the show taking a different direction in its fourth series.

“It’s sort of baked into the story, in a way, isn’t it? In a story that does seem to be about fantasy and reality, it is about the performance of the Tom and then suddenly you get a stronger flavour of the real world in Bridgerton, what reality means in Bridgerton, which I think is really interesting, because the Ton world can feel like a bit of a bubble sometimes,” he said.

Adjoa Andoh, who plays Lady Danbury, also praised season four for its “freshness” and for exploring the class divide in British society.

“Our show is not a sociology project, but even to discuss class in this way is really lovely to see,” she said. “What does keep the glittering household going? It’s those people downstairs. So what are their lives like and what happens when the two worlds actually cross over?” Adjoa added.

Bridgerton season four, part one premieres on Thursday January 29 on Netflix.

The Traitors: When Will It Return For Season 5 And Celebrity Season 2?

From Amanda’s kamikaze mission to Fiona’s explosive argument with Rachel – not to mention, of course, that action-packed finale – season four of The Traitors has consistently had us on the edge of our seats over the last four weeks.

Now that the castle gates are closed for another season, fans around the nation will no doubt already be getting withdrawal symptoms.

Fear not, though, because lots Traitors action is coming to our screens in the near future, with plenty of shocking banishings, dramatic missions and betrayals to look forward to.

So, when are we in for the next instalment of The Traitors…?

Has The Traitors UK season 5 been confirmed, and when will it air?

The BBC has already confirmed another series of The Traitors is in the pipeline, and they are looking for new and willing Traitors and Faithfuls to take part.

Applications opened for the series in November last year, so if you’ve spent the last four weeks telling anyone who’d listen that you’d do a better job than the Traitors and Faithfuls in the castle, now’s your chance to prove it.

Given the last few series’ start date, it’s fair to assume that season five will air on the BBC in early January 2027.

Will there be another season of The Celebrity Traitors?

Before The Traitors returns next year, though, we have a second season of the celebrity version coming in the autumn.

Just days after Alan Carr took the title of Celebrity Traitors champion, the BBC confirmed a second season would be airing in 2026.

While there have been no official announcements about who will take part in the series, the list of famous faces is already growing longer, with Danny Dyer, Ruth Jones and Alison Hammond among the early names tipped to be entering the castle to play the ruthless game.

“Studio Lambert have done an outstanding job as The Celebrity Traitors has well and truly captivated the nation, becoming a bona fide highlight of the year bringing record numbers of people together to enjoy every twist and turn,” Kalpna Patel-Knight, Head of Entertainment at the BBC said about the renewal.

How can I watch international seasons like The Traitors Ireland or The Traitors US?

If you need your Traitors fix before then, though, the very first two episodes of The Traitors Ireland land on BBC iPlayer just hours after the season four finale of the UK franchise. These two episodes will also air on BBC One at 12am on Saturday 24 January.

The Traitors Ireland is hosted by Derry Girls actor Siobhán McSweeney, and sees 24 players try to survive the castle without getting murdered or banished in the hopes of winning €50,000 (around £43,000).

Instead of Ardross Castle in Scotland, The Traitors Ireland is filmed at Slane Castle in County Meath, which is around an hour’s drive north of Dublin.

A fourth season of the Alan Cumming-hosted The Traitors US is expected to arrive on BBC iPlayer later this year, too. Previous seasons of The Traitors US have appeared on iPlayer weeks after their US broadcast finished, with the current series set to come to an end in America at the end of February.

If you can’t wait until then, all three previous series of the American version of the reality show are currently available on iPlayer.

Unlike the British version of The Traitors, the American franchise has included celebrities in every series, although a non-celebrity version has been commissioned for the first time and will film later this year.

The current American celebrity version is a who’s who of famous faces, including Love Island UK’s Maura Higgins, Real Housewives legend Lisa Rinna and Taylor Swift’s soon-to-be mother-in-law Donna Kelce.

And if you haven’t already binged them, there is already a whole host of Traitors content available to watch in the UK, with seasons from the aforementioned US, as well as New Zealand and Australia on BBC iPlayer.

The Traitors Fans Are Obsessed By The New ‘Two Scroll’ Theory

Eagle-eyed Traitors fans are convinced that another big reveal is coming before the end of the current series of the BBC reality show.

After each episode, companion series The Traitors: Uncloaked shows the murdered and banished contestants opening up a scroll to finally reveal to them who the Traitors are.

However, keen viewers have noticed a second scroll is sitting beside all the eliminated contestants, which has consistently remained unopened in each episode.

Previous instalments have even lingered on this second piece of paper, hinting that it may have relevance later down the line, leading fans to speculate as to whether another later-season twist or reveal is coming…

The most popular fan theory is that the scroll contains other connections that the contestants had with their castmates before signing up.

It has already been revealed that Judy is Roxy’s mother, and that Ross and Ellie are in a relationship – but could there be even more that we have yet to see?

Some fans even suspect that every member of the cast is connected to someone else on the show, and that these links will be revealed in the last week of episodes.
