You really know you’ve made it as an A-list music star when the NFL invites you to perform during the Super Bowl Halftime Show.
In the past few years alone, massive names as varied as The Weeknd, Jennifer Lopez, Usher, Kendrick Lamar and, of course, Rihanna have all wowed with their performances – but there have been a fair few shocking moments along the way.

This year, the honour falls to music superstar Bad Bunny, fresh from his Album Of The Year win at the 2026 Grammys, and the world is sure to be watching to see what he pulls out of the bag on one of the world’s most-watched music events.
Indeed, as history has proved time and time again, the Super Bowl Halftime Show hasn’t always been just about the music – with plenty of shocking and headline-grabbing moments taking place at the annual sports event.
As we get ready for what could easily become one of the year’s biggest nights in music, here are 18 more of the biggest Super Bowl shockers from years gone by…

This shocking moment didn’t come during Beyoncé’s Halftime Show but shortly after it, with the football game that followed (snooze…) having to suspend play for a full 34 minutes due to a power outage.
Evidently, the power of the Queen Bey is so strong, it can even plunge an entire stadium into darkness. Bow down, bitches indeed.
Usher’s jam-packed set included powerful vocals, surprise A-list guests and impressive choreo.
Looking back, though, we think this impromptu shirtless moment is probably what we think of most when we reflect on the Burn singer’s Super Bowl appearance…
She’s not always the first person you think of when it comes to great live performers, but Katy Perry proved a massive point when she really brought it at the Super Bowl.
Over the course of her Halftime Show, Katy entered atop a giant lion, floated through the air while singing Firework, introduced Missy Elliott and convincingly rocked out to I Kissed A Girl with Lenny Kravitz.
And yet… the next day all anyone seemed to want to talk about was the “Left Shark” incident, when one of her dancers lost their way in the middle of a routine, while dressed as a shark.
It’s a pity, really, because Katy’s was one of the most impressive and elaborate Super Bowl shows of the 2010s.
If nothing else, the 2022 Halftime Show will be remembered for the epic level of stars that took part, with singer Mary J Blige and rappers Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and 50 Cent among those sharing the stage in a celebration of hip-hop music throughout the years.
There were some big headline-grabbing moments, too – not least when 50 Cent recreated his upside down entrance from his In Da Club music video, and Eminem made a show of solidarity by taking the knee in the middle of the performance.
Diana Ross’ Super Bowl performance was jam-packed with hits, dating back from the music legend’s days in the Supremes right through to her solo success.
Arguably the most iconic moment of the lot came right at the end, though, when she left the field in a helicopter. There’s travelling in style, and then there’s this…
Nobody would question that Prince is one of the greatest live performers in pop history, but he really cemented this at the 2007 Super Bowl. As well as covering tracks by Queen, Foo Fighters and Bob Dylan, he effortlessly performed his own songs Let’s Go Crazy and Baby I’m A Star.
He closed the show with a version of his signature hit, Purple Rain, made all the more significant by the literal downpour that accompanied it – the real shocker being that Prince still managed to retain his cool throughout. What a man.
Before it was so commonplace for huge musicians to perform at the Halftime Show, organisers used to think a little more outside the box. That’s why in 1991, they handed over the reins to the Walt Disney Company.
Disney’s show is not one that’s looked back on particularly fondly, with a wave of local child performers sharing the stage with the company’s iconic characters (as well as New Kids On The Block, for some reason), while also somehow shoehorning in a tribute to those fighting in the Gulf war, and a message from then-president George Bush.
Fortunately for everyone involved, this was also the year Whitney Houston blew everyone away with her rendition of the National Anthem, which is what most of us remember about the Super Bowl that year.
Known for making a statement in some way or another whenever she performs live, we were curious to see how Lady Gaga would kick things off when given the massive platform of the Super Bowl Halftime Show.
And really, what better way is there to make an entrance than a pre-recorded patriotic tune sung from the top of a stadium, before leaping off it to perform your hits on the field below?
After a great run of successive mega-stars performing at the Super Bowl , beginning with Madonna and ending with Lady Gaga, the stakes were high when it was announced that Justin Timberlake would be taking the stage for the first time since 2004.
Regrettably, his performance didn’t quite live up to expectations, with many criticising his unusual fashion choices, as well as the decision not to invite Janet Jackson to perform with him following their ill-fated performance more than a decade earlier (more on that later, unsurprisingly).
In 2020, the NFL lined up two legendary artists to share top billing with Jennifer Lopez and Shakira teaming up for the Halftime Show.
The pair’s performance was packed full of memorable moments, with Shakira showing off her famous belly-dancing skills, crowd-surfing and paid homage to both her Colombian and Lebanese heritage.

Meanwhile, J-Lo sneaked in a cameo appearance from her teenager Emme, and turned her hit Let’s Get Loud into a unifying (and surprisingly effective) protest anthem.
However, some more conservative critics took issue with the star when she showed off some of the pole-dancing skills she’d honed while making the film Hustlers. There’s clearly just no pleasing some people…
Given that The Weeknd’s Halftime Show performance came pretty much slap-bang in the middle of the pandemic, there was a big question mark over exactly how he would be able to pull it all off.
True to form, he managed just fine.
Embodying the “lounge lizard” character that he took on while promoting his After Hours album, the singer put an unusually eerie spin on the Super Bowl Halftime Show, at one point getting lost in a creepy maze before heading out onto the pitch, where he was met by an army of identically-dressed backing dancers in facial bandages.

It’s tough to know quite where to start with Kendrick Lamar’s performance from 2025.
One of the best showman of his generation, it says something that above all of that, what we best remember Kendrick holding court at the centre of it all.
Having been away from the stage for a number of years, the world was waiting with baited breath for Rihanna’s Super Bowl performance, which she’d previously teased would include a mysterious surprise guest.
What no one could have anticipated, though, was that Rih was talking about her unborn child, not least because she’d welcomed her son RZA only a few months earlier.
Reports claimed that the chart-topping star even managed to conceal her pregnancy from almost everyone involved in putting the performance together – which made it almost using the Super Bowl Halftime Performance as her way of announcing to the world she had another baby on the way all the more surprising.
She has since welcomed a second son, Riot, with her partner, fellow musician A$AP Rocky.
It had been one of the worst kept secrets in music, but we still did a little squeal when the other two members of Destiny’s Child popped up during Beyoncé’s Super Bowl performance (and what a pop up it was, we could happily watch Michelle Williams finding her feet after shooting up from the floor for a good two hours without getting bored).
The trio whizzed through Bootylicious and Independent Women before joining Beyoncé for Single Ladies, complete with the video’s original choreo.
Madonna was the main event during the 2012 Halftime Show, but it was M.I.A. who wound up generating the most headlines.
Upon finding out that her pre-recorded vocals would be cutting out the word “shit” as she appeared during Give Me All Your Luvin’, the British rapper decided to take matters into her own hands, or rather fingers, by flipping off the camera at the end of her part of the performance.
Although the incident only lasted a split second, it had big repercussions for M.I.A., who wound up facing a lawsuit for millions of dollars from the NFL over the unplanned incident.
Beyoncé had already begun addressing social issues, specifically feminism, on her self-titled album at the end of 2013, but she cranked things up a good few notches when she kicked off the Lemonade era.
This stage of her career began with a guest spot during Coldplay’s Super Bowl show, where her first ever live performance of Formation wound up creating a buzz thanks to its allusions to Malcolm X, the Black Panthers and the Black Lives Matter movement.
Beyoncé’s fans lapped it up, and her empowering Super Bowl performance built anticipation for when Lemonade arrived a few months later, following similar themes.
“Play at the Super Bowl,” they told Janet Jackson. “Invite Justin Timberlake along,” they told Janet Jackson. “This will give your career a massive boost,” they told Janet Jackson.
The story goes that Justin went to tear off the front of Janet’s outfit at the end of their performance, but also wound up ripping her lace bra too, exposing her breast, which was covered by a nipple shield.
Although the so-called “wardrobe malfunction” didn’t even last a full second, it had the power to bring Janet’s career to a temporary halt, and while she’s certainly enjoyed success since, we can’t help but wonder how far the talented and unique star could have gone had this scandal not defined her for so many years.
In more recent years, Janet and Justin’s Super Bowl performance has been used as an example of gender double standards in the entertainment industry.
Janet had her performance at the 2004 Grammys – which took place just seven days after the Super Bowl – unceremoniously dropped in the fallout. Justin, meanwhile, not only performed during the show but took home Album Of The Year, even cracking a joke about the Super Bowl during his acceptance speech.

In early 2018, Justin disclosed that he and Janet were on good terms despite the scandal, but sadly those “good terms” didn’t extend to an invitation to join him on stage, which is unfortunate, because that would certainly have livened up what was ultimately a fairly poorly-received performance.
Three years later, Justin publicly apologised to both Janet and his ex-girlfriend Britney Spears, stating (in a since-deleted Instagram post): “I care for and respect these women and I know I failed”.
He added: “The industry is flawed. It sets men, especially white men, up for success. It’s designed this way. As a man in a privileged position I have to be vocal about this. Because of my ignorance, I didn’t recognise it for all that it was while it was happening in my own life but I do not want to ever benefit from others being pulled down again.”
2006 was a hell of a year for music. Looking back on the songs that came out … 20 years ago … filled me with nostalgia for a simpler time in life but also made me realise how many BOPS came out in a relatively short period of time.
After all, this was the time that Sandi Thom wished she was a punk rocker with flowers in her hair, when Gnarls Barkley was Crazy and when Girls Aloud saw the year out with pop banger Something Kinda Ooh.

Your demons\nAnd all the non-believers, the plans that they have made?\nBecause one day, I’ll leave you a phantom\nTo lead you in the summer to join the black parade…\"\nWhen I was a young boy, my father\nTook me into the city to see a marching band\nHe said, \"Son, when you grow up would you be\nThe savior of the broken, the beaten and the damned?\"\n\nSometimes I get the feeling she’s watching over me\nAnd other times I feel like I should go\nAnd through it all, the rise and fall, the bodies in the streets\nAnd when you’re gone, we want you all to know\n\nWe’ll carry on, we’ll carry on, and though you’re\nDead and gone, believe me, your memory will carry on\nWe’ll carry on,and in my heart I can’t contain it\nThe anthem won’t explain it\n\nA world that sends you reeling from decimated dreams\nYour misery and hate will kill us all\nSo paint it black and take it back, let’s shout it loud and clear\nDefiant to the end we hear the call\n\nTo carry on, we’ll carry on, and though you’re\nDead and gone, believe me, your memory will carry on\nWe’ll carry on,and though you’re broken and defeated\nYour weary widow marches\n\nOn and on, we carry through the fears (Oh, oh, oh)\nDisappointed faces of your peers(Oh, oh, oh)\nTake a look at me, ’cause I could not care at all\n\nDo or die, you’ll never make me\nBecause the world will never take my heart\nGo and try, you’ll never break me\nWe want it all, we wanna play this part\nI won’t explain or say I’m sorry\nI’m unashamed, I’m gonna show my scars\nGive a cheer for all the broken\nListen here, because it’s who we are\nI’m just a man, I’m not a hero\nJust a boy, who had to sing this song\nI’m just a man, I’m not a hero\nI don’t care!\n\nWe’ll carry on, we’ll carry on, and though you’re\nDead and gone, believe me, your memory will carry on\nWe’ll carry on,and though you’re broken and defeated\nYour weary widow marches\n\nDo or die, you’ll never make me\nBecause the world will never take my heart\nGo and try, you’ll never break me\nWe want it all, we wanna play this part(We’ll carry on!)\nDo or die, you’ll never make me(We’ll carry on!)\nBecause the world will never take my heart(We’ll carry on!)\nGo My fellow elder emos, this is our time to rise up. Slowly, Don’t want to put our backs out.
Yes, the anthem Welcome To The Black Parade is about to turn 20. It was a real turning point for our modern definition of emo music and shot MCR to success, three albums into their career.

I still remember crying at the original Black Parade tour and swearing to “Carry on”, bless.
Following the release of their self-titled album in 2004, Scissor Sisters came roaring back to the pop scene in 2006 with this bop and actually made it to number one in the charts.
Much to the unbridled joy of boyband lovers across the UK, Take That returned to the charts with their power ballad Patience. It was a very welcomed return for the boys and they’ll be touring the UK in 2026, too.
Turns out their fans just needed a little patience. Sorry.

It’s been 20 years since this came out and I still don’t understand why we let him away with this but credit where credit is due, the song did reach number one in the charts in the UK.
The Black Eyed Peas have had some hits and misses but this song, in my opinion, still absolutely slaps. It’s fun, it’s fast and the lyrics are verging on nonsensical. Delightful.

We can’t mention the early 2000′s without at least once mentioning reality tv show The X Factor. Leona Lewis won in 2006 and had a Christmas #1 with her anthem A Moment Like This.
After the success of her (problematic but honestly brilliant) album Love Angel Music Baby, Gwen Stefani came soaring back to the charts with this catchy bop which includes an incredible admission of “acting stink”.

Fun fact: This was on my running playlists for a good 10 years. The perfect dance track and one that many of us will remember being part of our first ever club experiences.
For real ones, this song is synonymous with the Twilight film series. However, it was also an anthem in its’ own right reaching 4 in the charts and being every Muse fans’ example of how exciting their music can be.
Nearly 20 years after they were originally supposed to air in the US, the last eight episodes of the ill-fated Friends spin-off Joey will soon be available to watch.
The short-lived sitcom – which featured Matt LeBlanc back in action as his Friends alter-ego – ran between 2004 and 2006, but was cancelled during its second season after negative reviews and dwindling viewing figures, with its final run of episodes never being shown in the States.
Before that, Joey had been unavailable to stream, rent or purchase anywhere.
According to Deadline, the final eight instalments of Joey will soon be uploaded onto the Friends YouTube channel alongside the existing 38, to complete the whole series.
While these episodes are new to Americans, some international fans had already able to watch the entire series at the time. BBC News pointed out that British fans could watch the whole second season in 2007 on Channel 5, including these eight “lost” episodes.

The spin-off followed Matt LeBlanc’s Joey Tribbiani after he left New York to pursue his acting career in Hollywood.
When in Los Angeles, the character reunited with his highly strung sister, Gina, and moved in with his genius nephew, Michael.

Over the course of the series, viewers were also introduced to Joey’s new agent, his fellow actors and his LA neighbours, with the cast including The Sopranos star Drea De Matteo, Ted Lasso’s Andrea Anders and future Emmy winner Jennifer Coolidge.
While the spin-off never featured any of the core Friends cast, David Schwimmer did direct a handful of episodes, while these newly-unearthed instalments also feature an appearance from Robert Constanzo, reprising the role of Joey Tribbiani Sr from the original sitcom.
Despite following Friends’ hugely successful run, Joey struggled to pull in audiences.
While Friends ended with nearly 66 million American viewers, Joey debuted to 18.6 million, which soon nosedived to 7.1 million by the second series.

That might sound impressive by 2025’s standards, but at the time, this was considered low viewership for a television sitcom.
Even in the UK, audiences struggled to connect with the spin-off, with the second episode losing over one million viewers compared with the first.

The executive producer for Friends, Kevin S. Bright, told The Age in 2006: “On Friends, Joey was a womaniser, but we enjoyed his exploits. He was a solid friend, a guy you knew you could count on.
“Joey was deconstructed to be a guy who couldn’t get a job, couldn’t ask a girl out. He became a pathetic, mopey character. I felt he was moving in the wrong direction, but I was not heard.”
British comedy fans have had plenty to talk about this last week, following the news that The Inbetweeners looks set for a revival after a hiatus of over a decade.
And now, Joe Thomas – who played Simon Cooper in the cult sitcom and its two spin-off movies – has spoken about the show’s reboot, confirming that he’s up for making a return.
“I feel enormously close to all those people and, obviously, I love spending time with them,” he told The Sun.
Joe added: “If there was an opportunity to spend more time with them in any capacity, I’d love that… that’s pretty much all I can say.”

Earlier this week it came to light that production company Banijay UK and the creators of The Inbetweeners had come to an agreement which “paves the way for the return of the hit comedy title”.
However, speaking about reprising his role, Joe – whose character Simon was an entertainingly hopeless romantic – has also reflected on why the delusional nature of The Inbetweeners’ core four might not be as funny with age.
“When you get older, your delusions fall away, you look at life as it is,” he explained. “It means you get into less stupid situations I suppose, also the challenges get bigger; you can make larger mistakes when you get older.”

Nevertheless, Joe heaped praise on the show’s writers Damon Beesley and Iain Morris and their creative ability.
“I’ve always been really, really drawn to brilliant writing and I genuinely think, despite filthy language, The Inbetweeners is a brilliantly written comedy,” he said.
“Honestly, if it was a case of doing more I do have faith in Iain and Damon. It’s their show actually. I mean I’m very much a ‘follow the people’ person.”

Joe co-starred in The Inbetweeners alongside Simon Bird, James Buckley, and Blake Harrison, with the sitcom going on to scoop British Comedy Awards as well as a TV Bafta in the fan-voted Audience Award category.
Two movie spin-offs followed in 2011 and 2014, drawing from the rich comedic fountain of lads’ holidays as the quartet headed to Malia and Australia, respectively.
However a 10th anniversary “Fwends Reunited” special disappointed some fans who wanted more from the content.

Joe has always been the most open of the four when it comes to reprising his role, with Simon claiming only last year that while he loved his co-stars “there are no prospects of a reunion”.
It’s a sentiment that James already made in 2022 when he said that there’s “not enough money in the world” for him to resume his role as Jay as he was worried about tarnishing the legacy of the show.
Last month, Joe and James launched a podcast together, Joe And James Fact Up, where the pair explore strange facts, and talk about their friendship.
But what about those rare sequels that somehow manage to better the movie that came before it?
Here are 11 of the most celebrated follow-ups in modern movie history…
Addams Family Values
Snap/Shutterstock
We don’t use terms like “perfection” lightly, but if there were ever a perfect family comedy then Addams Family Values might well be it. The fact it’s actually a sequel to a less-revered live-action version of the classic cartoon is even more impressive.
Obviously all of the cast members playing the creepy, kooky, mysterious, spooky and, indeed, altogether ooky family shine as brightly as their dark surroundings will allow (special shout-out to Anjelica Huston serving true macabre glamour as Morticia). But Addams Family Values really belongs to new addition Joan Cusack, who stars as Uncle Fester’s love interest Debbie.

Toy Story 3

Who’d have guessed that an animated buddy comedy about a toy cowboy and a plastic astronaut would have sparked one of the most lucrative film sagas of recent times?
And while Toy Story 2 – released four years after the original – kicked things up several notches, it was the third instalment in the series that people really went wild for. Toy Story 3 served up adorable new characters, scooped an impressive Best Picture nomination at the Oscars and, crucially, delivered not one but two ugly-cry moments.

Paddington 2
Warner Bros/Moviestore/Shutterstock
Even though the original Paddington film was well-received when it first hit cinemas in 2014 – featuring a CGI version of the classic character interacting with live-action actors – few could predict just how beloved its sequel would go on to become.
Not only was it nominated for Outstanding British Film at the Baftas, it’s also one of the few movies with a perfect score on review site Rotten Tomatoes. With 238 positive reviews, it’s also the highest-rated film on the entire website. Take that, Citizen Kane.

The Dark Knight
Warner Bros/Dc Comics/Kobal/Shutterstock
Like many, we were sold on The Dark Knight from the moment we saw its infamous viral marketing campaign (back in the day when viral marketing campaigns were actually still new and exciting).
We could probably talk all day about how this film is a level up on Batman Begins, from Christopher Nolan’s direction, to the incredible costumes and special effects. But let’s be honest, this film is all about Heath Ledger, who earned a posthumous Academy Award for his unforgettable portrayal of the Joker.

Aliens
20th Century Fox/Kobal/Shutterstock
Although the original Alien divided critics upon its original release in 1979, the film quickly garnered a loyal following, and by the mid-1980s, was revered among fans of sci-fi.
Putting out a sequel was therefore always going to be a bit of a risk, but fortunately 1986′s Aliens more than lived up to its predecessor. It earned Sigourney Weaver a game-changing Oscar nomination as the star of a sci-fi film. It has also been named the Best Sequel Of All Time by Empire magazine.

Mad Max: Fury Road
Moviestore/Shutterstock
Listen, we get it, Fury Road was billed as a “revisiting” of the original Mad Max trilogy, rather than a straight-up sequel or a traditional reboot.
Still, the film was so well-received – check that 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes if you don’t believe us, not to mention its six Oscar wins – we felt we couldn’t leave it off this list. Plus, who would pass up the opportunity to see Charlize Theron in all her buzzed glory again?

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Lucasfilm/Fox/Kobal/Shutterstock
Star Wars has so many different instalments, and a fan community that stretches far and wide, that it would be literally impossible to decide which of the numerous sequels is the superior one.
So while we’d struggle to pinpoint which of film is the best, we’ve gone with The Empire Strikes Back for the simple reason it contains arguably the most iconic moment in Star Wars history, when Darth Vader’s true identity is revealed.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day

He said “I’ll be back”, and apparently he meant it, although it did take seven years.
Terminator 2: Judgement Day was hailed as even better than the original film by many critics, who were wowed by the advanced special effects (which went on to win one of the film’s four Academy Awards).
The success of Terminator 2 led to a number of additional spin-offs and sequels, although none of these have quite been able to match the original two films.

Avengers: Endgame

Essentially the sequel to around 100 other films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Endgame was much-awaited when it hit cinemas in 2019, wrapping up stories that began in the Iron Man, Thor and Captain America film series.
Fortunately, the majority of cinema-goers felt the ambitious project was worth the wait, with Avengers: Endgame landing rave reviews and becoming the highest-grossing film of all time (that’s second-highest, when adjusted for inflation).

The Godfather Part II

The first sequel to ever win Best Picture at the Academy Awards (the only other being Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King), Godfather II is so revered it was added to the U.S. National Film Registry of the Library of Congress due to its cultural significance, alongside the original Godfather film.
The same can not be said for the follow-up, Godfather III.
Skyfall

Although Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace proved popular, many 007 fans still breathed a sigh of relief when Skyfall was released, as they felt it was more in keeping with the James Bond franchise than Daniel Craig’s first two outings.
Skyfall won largely positive reviews from critics, many of whom praised the decision to give more material for Dame Judi Dench to work with, and became the highest-grossing film in the UK ever at that time. Follow-up Spectre was similarly well-received, with the Daniel’s fifth and final Bond film, No Time To Die, set to hit cinemas… soon. Let’s just say soon.
The original film (which itself was a remake of a successful Disney live-action film from the 1970s) centres around a quarrelling mother-daughter duo who switch bodies once a spell takes effect, with unexpected consequences.

So far, the remake has been well-received by critics, many of whom have hailed it as a worthy successor to the first instalment that so many of us already knew and loved.
In honour of the sequel’s release, we’ve rounded up 14 facts you probably never knew about the hit movie…
Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis in Freaky Friday
Advertisement
1. Lindsay’s character was originally supposed to be a goth
When the Parent Trap star read the original script, she thought Anna’s character was a bit too scruffy. “There was nothing there, no one can relate to the character when she’s really goth,” she told Vanity Fair in 2006.
To recreate her own envision, LiLo turned up to the audition dressed extremely preppy, which worked to her benefit as the character was rewritten.
2. The shots in the opening credits are actual photos of Jamie Lee Curtis and her daughter Annie Guest
Jamie Lee Curtis and her daughter Annie Guest
We all love a fake snapshot or two at the beginning of a film, but who knew the photos at the start of Freaky Friday captured true moments from Jamie Lee’s real life?
One sees her daughter as a toddler laying on her mother’s back, with her arms tightly placed around her neck.

3. Lindsay had to give Jamie Lee precise lessons on how to say ‘shut up’
During a promotional interview on YouTube, the Everything, Everywhere All At Once actor admitted to needing help from her then-teenage co-star with the specific way she said “shut up!”.
“There’s a way she says ‘shut up’ that I couldn’t get. She had to give me a ‘shut up’ tutorial because it’s a very specific way,” Jamie Lee said.
Meanwhile, Jamie Lee, who was raising 16-year-old daughter Annie Guest at the time, claimed that starring in this film with a young person helped her see things from her child’s point of view.

“I think I probably have a judgmental bitch badge that I put on because I can be harsh, and I think that walking a mile in some very uncomfortable teenage shoes gave me the opportunity to see what it’s like on the other side,” she said.
4. Gwen Stefani was offered a role as a member of the band
Paul Archuleta via Getty Images
According to IMDB, the US singer was offered a role as a member of Anna’s band, but sadly we didn’t get to see that happen – although we think she would have been a perfect addition to that cast.

5. Michelle Trachtenberg was supposed to be Anna

The Ice Princess star was first to be cast as the mouthy teenager, but had to back out of the project due to her her contract with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where she played Dawn Summers.
This was actually the second film Michelle turned down in which LiLo later landed the lead gig – the first being The Parent Trap in 1998, in which Lindsay made her name.

6. Kelly Osbourne also auditioned for the role

The star, known for her family reality show The Osbournes, was also offered the part of Anna after auditioning, but had to pull out after her mother Sharon was diagnosed with cancer.
Kelly later described how people told her it was the biggest mistake of her career, due to the success of the film.

7. Meanwhile, Madonna reportedly had her eye on the role of Tess

Jodie Foster was the first pick, having played the teenage daughter in Disney’s first Freaky Friday movie, and when she declined the role, it went to Annette Bening.
8. Because of this, Jamie Lee Curtis was actually cast just days before shooting began
Still, it was obviously a case of the stars aligning, as Jamie Lee and Lindsay’s chemistry was undeniable, and they’ve spoken highly about one another repeatedly over the decades.
9. Lindsay Lohan’s real mum also made an appearance in the movie
LiLo’s mum Dina can be seen in the final scene where Anna is dancing with Jake. Dina is in the background dancing with an older man, but there is an awkward moment where she is seen looking directly at the camera.

10. The famous Anna and Tess collision scene is similar to a scene in Bewitched
Anna and Tess’ idea to collide at full force in an attempt to reverse the spell is similar to a scene in 1966′s Bewitched: Divided He Falls, where Darrin is split into two people and Endora suggests he do the same to break the spell.
However, in this scene, the trick had the desired effect.
11. Lindsay had her first on-screen kiss in Freaky Friday
In a behind the scene YouTube clip, Lindsay admitted that the kiss she shared with co-star Chad Michael Murray was the first she had done on screen.

12. The film paid homage to Jamie Lee Curtis’ mother
A character named Mr Bates appears in the film as a tribute to the actor’s mother, Janet Leigh who is best known for her performance in the 1960 film Psycho.
Mr Bates is a reference to Norman Bates’ character in the classic movie.
13. A member of the band Orgy instructed Jamie on how to play the guitar for the last scene

Orgy, an American rock band formed in 1994, offered up one of their members to teach Jamie Lee how to play the guitar, and although the actor practiced making the concert scene look as authentic as possible, a studio musician dubbed over the guitar solo in the finished film.

14. Freaky Friday is actually based on Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel of the same name
Rodgers’ story was adapted many times, including the original Disney version in 1976, which starred future Oscar winner Jodie Foster in her child actor years.
In 2020, it was the source for the movie Freaky, which focuses on a teenage girl who unintentionally swaps bodies with a middle-aged male serial killer.
Sarah Jessica Parker is lifting the lid on a deleted Sex And The City scene that would have given viewers more of an insight into her character’s background.
The Emmy winner played Carrie Bradshaw in all six seasons of Sex And The City, as well as its two spin-off films and the revival series And Just Like That.
Ahead of And Just Like That’s return, HuffPost UK spoke to Sarah Jessica about the fact that, despite Carrie having been on our screens for the better part of 30 years, there are still a lot of question marks around the character’s back story.
SJP explained that there has always been a “very conscious effort” to not shed too much light on any of the characters’ introduced in Sex And The City personal histories, but especially Carrie.
“There was a moment that we had a father for Carrie,” she recalled. “There was a scene shot where Carrie opens a desk drawer, and looks down and sees a photograph of her father, and shuts the drawer. And we cut it from the show.”

According to Sarah Jessica, showrunner Michael Patrick King opted to ditch the small scene as he felt it would have “complicated” the story, and might have “eclipsed” and “dominated” the bigger picture.
“I could not agree more,” she said. “There is a sort of alternate universe in which she lives, in which back story doesn’t exist.
“So, we’re not endowing her with qualities because… or saying she behaves this way because… or a parent or mother parented her this way and that’s why [she had] this response.
“[This approach is] so clean, and it kind of gives you more liberty to tell a story. Because in some ways, once you start introducing families, and the ways in which they’ve informed somebody, you lock yourself into, like, pathologies and choices and eccentricities.”
Carrie did briefly touch on her family life in season four of Sex And The City, when she disclosed that her father left the family home when she was a child.

“Do you think it really can be as simple as, ‘My father walked out, therefore I’ll always be messed up about men?‘’,” she asked Miranda in the episode A Vogue Idea, who responded: “My father came home every night at seven on the dot, and I have no clue about men either.”
The first episode of And Just Like That season three is now streaming on Sky and Now in the UK, with new instalments coming every Friday.
More interviews with the And Just Like That cast will be published on HuffPost UK in the coming days.
Every year on the first Monday in May, the world’s most famous people gather under one roof, dressed in their finest, for the Met Gala fundraiser event.
This means that on the first Tuesday in May, many of us here in the UK spend our mornings scrolling through social media, judging the A-list guests’ red carpet looks.

Well, folks, that fateful day is almost upon us. So, to prepare for this year’s event – co-chaired by Lewis Hamilton, Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky and Pharrell Williams, with the dress code “tailored for you” (in honour of the Met’s upcoming exhibit Superfine: Tailoring Black Style) – we’ve rounded up some of the best, most glamorous or, indeed, most outrageous looks in Met Gala history.
Zayn Malik surprised fans at his show on Tuesday night with an impromptu throwback to his One Direction days – on the anniversary of his exit from the band being announced.
The chart-topping singer is currently nearing the end of his first ever solo world tour, but kicked things off in a different way at his show in Mexico City.

Much to fans’ delight, Zayn opened the set with a live performance of Night Changes, which also happened to be the last single One Direction released with him still a part of the group.

Zayn had not performed the song – which he co-wrote alongside all four of his former bandmates – since parting ways with 1D in 2015.

Unlike the other four members of the group, One Direction songs have never formed part of his live setlists.

It has been an emotional few months for Directioners, following the shock death of Liam Payne in October 2024, at the age of 31.
Prior to that, he paid an emotional tribute on Instagram, writing: “I lost a brother when you left us and can’t explain to you what l’d give to just give you a hug one last time and say goodbye to you properly and tell you that I loved and respected you dearly.

“I will cherish all the memories I have with you in my heart forever, [I have] no words that justify or explain how I feel right now other than beyond devastated. I hope that wherever you are right now you are good and are at peace A and you know how loved you are.”
He signed off the emotional message: “Love you, bro.”
Nathan Lane has revealed that he was up for a part in Space Jam but ultimately didn’t get it because of his sexuality.
“Apparently the director [Joe Pytka] saw me hosting the Tony Awards and thought that suggested I was too gay to play the part,” the Broadway star said in an interview with Vanity Fair published on Monday.
The Tony and Emmy winner had been asked about whether homophobia had limited his opportunities in Hollywood, leading him to mention his experience with the 1996 film, which starred NBA icon Michael Jordan alongside the cast of Looney Tunes.
Nathan had apparently been in consideration for the part of Jordan’s assistant Stan Podolak, a role that eventually went to Seinfeld star Wayne Knight.
However, Nathan noted that the film was one that he “didn’t really care about”, quipping: “So thank God, I didn’t have to do Space Jam…”

“But I don’t know,” he continued. “I’ll never know what people say. Homophobia is alive and well, still.”

In a 2023 interview on Sunday Today, he recalled being “not prepared” to discuss his sexuality when he and Robin Williams, his co-star in the 1996 comedy The Birdcage, did an interview with Oprah Winfrey around the time of that movie’s release.
The two played a gay couple in the film, whose son is set to marry the daughter of a conservative couple. Nathan said he was “so scared” of how the interview could go down as he feared how Hollywood would react to him talking openly about his sexuality.
The actor retold how, when the host asked him whether he was afraid of being “typecast” for the role, Robin then jumped in and diverted the talk show host “because he was a saint”.
“Robin was just the greatest person ― such a beautiful, sensitive soul and so kind and generous to me,” he said of the late Oscar winner.
