Can The Tories Defy The Polls And Hold On In Today’s Crucial By-Elections?

The world’s attention has understandably been focused on the Middle East in recent days, and is likely to remain so for some time to come.

But two by-elections on Thursday have the potential to be much more politically significant for Rishi Sunak.

The Tories are defending two nominally safe seats, in Mid Bedforshire and Tamworth.

It is no exaggeration to say that, were the Conservatives to lose both of them, the party could swiftly go into meltdown.

In Mid Beds, the Tories are defending a 25,000 majority, while in Tamworth, the party won the seat in 2019 by 20,000 votes. On paper at least, they should be unassailable.

But given the government’s unpopularity, and the circumstances which led to the by-elections, both Labour and the Lib Dems still hold out hopes of causing an upset.

The contest in Mid Bedfordshire has been caused by the resignation of Nadine Dorries after she was denied the peerage promised to her by Boris Johnson.

In Tamworth, meanwhile, sitting MP Chris Pincher quit amid allegations of sexual misconduct which saw him suspended from the Commons for eight weeks.

Tory hopes of hanging on in Mid Beds have been boosted by an extraordinary war of words between Labour and the Lib Dems.

Both parties insist they are best placed to win, leading to the very real possibility of the anti-Tory vote being split, thereby allowing Conservative candidate Festus Akinbusoye to get elected.

Tamworth is a straight shoot-out between the Tories and Labour, who are odds-on favourites with the bookies.

Nevertheless, Labour insiders insist the prospect of winning either seat is a “moonshot”.

One shadow cabinet member told HuffPost UK: “They’re two very safe Tory seats and it would take a miracle for Labour to win either. Mid Beds is a genuine three way split, but still a real long shot.”

Shadow science, innovation and technology secretary Peter Kyle, who is Labour’s campaign co-ordinator in the seat, said: “I think objectively anybody looking at all of the campaigns would rather be in our position than the others, but this is unlike anything I’ve experienced and uncertainties are constantly lurking.”

But another Labour MP said: “Mid Beds is the Tories for the keeping – no chance of that turning red.

“And to be quite honest, we don’t need it anyway. It’s not a target seat of ours and this isn’t a general election. If anything, it’s amusing that the Tories will frame it as a big win when all they’ve done is keep a seat that is already theirs.”

Labour sources insist winning in Tamworth – where Pincher received 68% of the vote at the last election – would be an even bigger achievement than the party’s stunning victory in Selby and Ainsty in July.

But a senior Tory MP told HuffPost: “I reckon our chances are poor in Tamworth because of how grim Chris Pincher’s reason for leaving was. I think people will punish the party for what he did and vote against us as a protest for all the sleaze we’ve seen in recent years.”

And a Labour MP said: “We do feel good about Tamworth. We know we have the power to overturn such huge majorities, as we’ve done it before.

“This seat in particular often reflects wider politics. It was Labour under Blair and Brown, Tory after that. And now, reflecting how well Labour are doing in the polls, I think that trend will continue.“

Defeat for the Tories would be as much of a psychological blow as an electoral one.

It’s the constituency of former Conservative prime minister Robert Peel, who in 1834 published the Tamworth Manifesto, which paved the way for the modern-day Tory Party.

One Labour MP dispensed with the usual pre-by-election caution and predicted a glory night for the party.

We’ve got both seats in the bag,” the MP said. “It doesn’t matter where the constituency is, or its history – the public want a change and are fed up of Tory lies.

“Their loyal voters are doubting them too, and we will see that on Thursday.”

Fresh By-Election Nightmare For Rishi Sunak As Chris Pincher To Resign As MP

Chris Pincher has said he will resign as an MP, triggering yet another by-election headache for Rishi Sunak.

The move came after he lost his appeal against an eight-week parliamentary suspension for allegedly groping two men.

Pincher, the MP for Tamworth, resigned as Conservative deputy chief whip last June after the allegations first emerged. He was also stripped of the Tory whip.

The scandal ultimately led to Boris Johnson’s resignation as prime minister.

In a statement on Thursday, Pincher said: “I have said already that I will not stand at the next General Election.

“However, following the Independent Expert Panel’s decision I wanted to talk to my office team and family.

“I do not want my constituents to be put to further uncertainty, and so in consequence I have made arrangements to resign and leave the Commons.

“Tamworth is a wonderful place and it has been an honour to represent its people. I shall make no further comment at this time.”

Pincher has been an MP since 2010 and retained his seat at the 2019 election with a majority of 19,634.

However, given their commanding lead in the opinion polls, Labour will will fancy their chances of seizing the seat and delivering yet another blow to the prime minister.

Sunak is already facing an embarrassing by-election defeat in Mid Bedfordshire in October, after Nadine Dorries finally stepped down as an MP.

Neil Parish’s Wife Chases Him With Scissors Saying ‘Snip-Snap’ After Tractor Porn Scandal

Neil Parish revealed the peculiar response his wife has to his behaviour during a bizarre interview on Monday.

Parish, who stood down as the Tory MP for Tiverton and Homerton in April, caused a national outcry when colleagues claimed he watched porn in the Commons twice.

He later said he was actually looking for tractors when he came across porn the first time, meaning the scandal quickly became known “tractor porn”.

He initially refused to quit even after losing the whip but changed his mind as the public response grew louder.

Recounting his messy departure from parliament, Parish told ITV’s Lorraine Kelly that it was his “hugely supportive” wife who had persuaded him to leave his post.

“She knows I’m no angel – in fact she chases me around the kitchen going, ‘snipper-snap’ knowing full well which part of my anatomy she’s after.”

Looking slightly taken aback, Lorraine said: “OK.”

“She knows what I’m like,” he added.

Lorraine continued: “You must have had to have a very awkward conversation with your wife. You’ve said she knows what you’re like, she accepts that I guess, but that conversation must have been very difficult.”

He said that his wife has supported him throughout his career in Westminster, as “she’s done so much with me.”

“So naturally, on the morning I decided to resign, it was her advice I took, it was my children, my son and daughter, both very sound advice, and in the end, do you twist and turn, do you tell lots of fibs, or do you go cleanly?

“And I decided to go cleanly,” he explained.

In an interview with The Times in April, Parish’s wife, Sue Parish, said she was stunned when she first found out what her husband had been up to.

She said: “It was all very embarrassing. My breath was taken away, frankly.”

She also said he had never done anything like that before, explaining: “No. He’s quite a normal guy, really. He’s a lovely person. It’s just so stupid.”

She suggested the issue was not going to come between them in their marriage as well, adding: “You’ve got to carry on, haven’t you?”

Back on Lorraine, Parish was asked he felt Johnson should take responsibility for the problems emerging within his own party – Parish is just one of several Tory MPs who has found themselves at the centre of fresh sleaze allegations over the last six months.

“[Johnson is] good on the big things, the vaccines, Ukraine and seeing down the murderous Russians,” the former MP said. “But it’s about trust and integrity.”

Parish highlighted the inconsistencies around what Johnson knew about the latest sleaze claims surrounding former deputy chief whip Chris Pincher.

Pincher has been accused of sexual misconduct, claims which Johnson allegedly knew about before appointing him to government in February this year.

Parish, who pushed for Pincher to have the whip removed on Friday, asked: “Why tell a fib when you know 24 hours later it’s going to be refuted?”

All Of The Sex Scandals Involving Conservative MPs So Far This Year

Last night, the government was rocked by yet another sex scandal involving one of its MPs — this time, deputy chief whip Chris Pincher.

Pincher resigned from his senior role enforcing party discipline after admitting he “embarrassed myself and others” when he “drank far too much” at the Carlton Club on Wednesday night.

The Tamworth MP is now facing calls to lose the whip entirely after the Sun reported that he had allegedly groped two men.

It is just the latest case in a long line of controversies to rock the government so far this year.

Imran Ahmad Khan

In April, Imran Ahman Khan, who was elected the Tory MP elected for Wakefield in 2019, was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy in 2008.

He resigned his seat and the following month was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

A jury at Southwark Crown Court heard how he forced the then teenager to drink gin and tonic and asked him to watch pornography before the attack at a house in Staffordshire following a party.

The victim, now 29, said he was left feeling “scared, vulnerable, numb, shocked and surprised” by the incident.

He alerted the Conservative Party press office days before Khan was elected, but said he wasn’t “taken very seriously”.

His resignation resulted in last week’s Wakefield by-election, which Labour won with a majority of 4,925 votes.

The Somerton and Frome MP, who was elected in 2015, was suspended from the Tory Party in April over three allegations of sexual harassment which are being investigated by parliament’s sleaze watchdog.

He is also being investigated by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards over separate allegations surrounding possible breaches of Commons lobbying rules and the register of interests.

The Sunday Times also reported allegations that Warburton had failed to declare a £100,000 loan from a Russian businessman — something he has denied.

Neil Parish

Neil Parish's resignation resulted in a by-election in Tiverton and Honiton which the Lib Dems won with a near 30 per cent swing.

Neil Parish resigned as the Tory MP for Tiverton and Honiton in May after he admitted watching porn in the Commons chamber.

The farmer later claimed that on the first occasion, he had been trying to look at pictures of tractors before accidentally clicking on an adult website.

Parish lost the whip in the wake of the revelations but initially said he intended to remain as an MP while the allegations against him were investigated. However, he resigned his seat within 24 hours amid mounting political pressure.

Speaking to the BBC at the time, the 65-year-old said: “The situation was, funnily enough it was tractors I was looking at, so I did get into another website with sort of a very similar name and I watched it for a bit, which I shouldn’t have done.

“My crime, my most biggest crime, is that on another occasion I went in a second time, and that was deliberate. That was sitting waiting to vote on the side of the chamber.”

His resignation led to a by-election in his Devon seat which the Liberal Democrats won last week with a swing of almost 30 per cent.

Unnamed Tory MP arrested on suspicion of rape

A male Tory MP in his 50s, who has not been named, was arrested in May on suspicion of rape and sexual assault offences between 2002 and 2009. He was bailed without charge, pending further inquiries.

The MP was also arrested on allegations of abuse of position of trust and misconduct in a public office, according to Scotland Yard.

The MP had been urged to stay away from parliament but was allowed to take part in a vote of no confidence in Boris Johnson last month.
