Robbie Williams Beats The Beatles’ Chart Record As Britpop Reaches Number One

It’s official – Robbie Williams now has more UK number one albums to his name than any artist in history.

On Friday evening, the Official Charts Company announced that Robbie had beaten the record previously held by The Beatles with the release of his 13th studio album Britpop.

Britpop has become the Angels singer’s 16th number one, thanks to a combination of his studio albums, greatest hits collections and soundtrack releases.

Last year, he matched The Beatles’ record of 15 UK number one albums after the companion album to the musical biopic Better Man reached the top spot.

Robbie previously described Britpop as the album that he “wanted to write and release after I left Take That in 1995”.

He recalled: “It was the peak of Britpop and a golden age for British Music. I’ve worked with some of my heroes on this album; it’s raw, there are more guitars and it’s an album that’s even more upbeat and anthemic than usual.

“There’s some ‘Brit’ in there and there’s certainly some ‘pop’ too – I’m immensely proud of this as a body of work.”

Britpop was originally supposed to be released in October 2025, but he pushed the release back by several months to avoid clashing with Taylor Swift’s The Life Of A Showgirl.

“It’s because of Taylor Swift,” he told The Guardian of the decision to delay the album’s release. “I could pretend it’s not, but it is. It’s selfish. I want a 16th No 1 album.”

While the album was initially postponed to 6 February, he surprise released digitally on Friday 16 January, followed by the deluxe version days later.

Britpop was preceded by lead single Rocket, featuring Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi and Deep Purple’s Glenn Hughes.

The album also features contributions from Jesse & Joy and Gary Barlow, who is listed as the co-writer of a song named after Morrissey.

Robbie Williams Once Dated Selma Blair, And It Didn’t Exactly End On A High Note

Earlier this week, the Cruel Intentions actor was a guest on Drew Barrymore’s US talk show, where she shared that decades ago, the British star visited her at her home.

“Robbie Williams was over at my house and it was almost a date. A million years ago,” she recalled.

However, when the Angels singer took a brief look in her fridge, he suddenly made his excuses and left, leaving Selma to reach out to a mutual friend to find out exactly what had gone on.

“Oh, your kitchen was empty, and he knew you don’t cook, so that wasn’t gonna work for him,” came the reply, with Selma adding: “Bravo to him for knowing he needed a tummy filled from his woman.”

“I probably had like a bottle of champagne and like a Fig Newton in the fridge from a year ago,” she quipped. “So he judged accurately that I wasn’t the one that was gonna nourish him.”

While primarily known for his music career, Robbie recently made the jump to the film world thanks to his biopic Better Man, which famously has him portrayed on screen at different stages of his life by a CGI chimp.

Robbie has now been married to his wife, the American model and TV personality Ayda Field, since 2010, and the couple share four children.

Robbie Williams Addresses Claims He Turned Down An Offer To Perform At King Charles’ Coronation

Robbie Williams has spoken out about rumours that he turned down the chance to perform at King Charles′ coronation.

Back in 2023, it was widely reported that Buckingham Palace was struggling to book acts to perform at a celebration event for the monarch for a variety of reasons.

At the time, it was claimed that Robbie was among those to have declined an offer to perform, which he was asked about during an interview on Watch What Happens Live on Monday.

“There was a reason,” Robbie insisted, with his wife Ayda Field reminding him from the sidelines that he was already “working” on the day of the coronation concert. “I [already had] something [booked] that I couldn’t turn down.”

“Because of money,” the always-candid Angels singer then added.

Around the time of the coronation concert, it was reported by The Sun that Sir Elton John and Harry Styles had been top picks to perform, but both turned down the offer due to scheduling conflicts.

Prior to this, it had been rumoured that Adele had also declined the chance to perform at the coronation due to her then-ongoing residency in Las Vegas, with Ed Sheeran also supposedly missing out due to prior commitments.

However, the Shape Of You singer later claimed this was not the case, with his rep claiming he’d actually not been approached about performing.

Meanwhile, the Spice Girls were tipped to reunite as a five-piece for the royal event, but this did not end up coming to fruition.

Instead, the concert featured performances from British stars like Olly Murs, Paloma Faith and Take That, while Katy Perry and Lionel Richie flew in from the US.

Katy and Lionel’s performances coincided with an unexpected cameo from King Charles and his wife Camilla Parker-Bowles on American Idol that same night, which raised eyebrows at the time.
