Peter Capaldi Just Shared Why He Really Left Doctor Who

Peter Capaldi, who was the 12th Doctor on BBC hit Doctor Who, has spoken out about his exit from the show.

The Thick Of It Star left the franchise in 2017. In a recent appearance on YouTube series 100 Questions with John Simmons, he claimed that he decided to leave the role because “I just wasn’t sure that it was going to go in the direction that I… everybody was leaving that I’d worked with.”

He added, “Everybody was leaving. Jenna [presumably Jenna Louise-Coleman, who played the Doctor’s companion Clara Oswald] had gone, and Steven [probably former head writer Steven Moffat, who also left in 2017] was going, and Brian [likely Brian Minchin], the producer, was going, and those are the people that make it work for you.

“We’d had some talks about the direction. I wasn’t sure that that was where I wanted to go with the show. And I also thought, I’m not sure I could come up with anything new.”

Peter continued to say that while his regeneration, which saw the actor replaced by Jodie Whittaker, was “very sad”, he thinks that the biological process the Doctor uses to survive serious damage has become “diminished”.

Calling the concept “a very, very powerful death motif,” he said, “To be perfectly honest, I think there are too many regenerations.

“I love all the Doctors, but I’ve lost count now of how many of them there are, so the weight of this kind of regeneration is diminished. Whereas when I grew up as a kid, the first time it happened it was: ‘What just happened there?’ It was mysterious and strange. It holds the mystery of the show, the regeneration.”

It’s not the first time he’s expressed his feelings about the show, of which he was a super-fan in his youth.

On the Half Of The Picture podcast this year, he claimed: “The show became very, very big. And it was never like that when I loved it. So it became a different thing.

“I think the show is a little bit of a victim of its success. You know, the show that I loved was a tiny thing, a little small thing that survived. It just survived, but nobody knew that it was warming its way into the culture in such a deep way. And I think that’s what I have an affinity with.”

In the ’70s, the Doctor Who fan club received so much correspondence from a young Capaldi that then-president of the group, Keith Miller, said he felt “haunted” by the Doctor-to-be.

BBC Cancels Doctor Who Christmas Special After Weeks Of Speculation

The BBC has confirmed that plans for a new Doctor Who special this Christmas will no longer be moving forward.

Earlier this month, Russell teased that an announcement about the special was due imminently, following reports in The Sun suggesting the one-off special could be “scrapped”, due to bosses struggling to find an actor to take over from Ncuti Gatwa as the next Time Lord.

The BBC declined to comment when contacted by HuffPost UK at the time, but announced on Wednesday morning that they were not moving forward with this special after all.

“After careful consideration, the BBC, Russell T Davies and [production company] Bad Wolf have collectively decided not to go ahead with the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas episode,” a press release read.

“This decision was not taken lightly, and we know it will be disappointing for fans, but in order to set the show up for future series, it was decided that rather than bridge the gap with a one off special, we are choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show which ensures that when the Tardis lands once more, it does so in all its glory.”

Elsewhere in their statement, they said that “the BBC will put Doctor Who out to competitive tender this year”.

“Doctor Who remains an important part of the BBC and this tender underpins the BBC’s continued commitment to Doctor Who ensuring audiences will enjoy the show for years to come,” they insisted, adding that “details of the tender will be announced in due course”.

Following the latest announcement, Russell confirmed he was stepping down as showrunner effective immediately.

“And so GOODBYE from me to Doctor Who but HELLO to a big new future for the show, as the BBC announces it’s putting the show out to tender,” he told his Instagram followers.

He continued: “As a result, there won’t be a Christmas special – we only cooked that up to guarantee a future when no one knew what would happen, but now we do know, there’s no need for it.

“You’ll have to wait a bit longer for new Doctor Who… but you’ll be waiting for MORE Doctor Who than a one-off. So it’s worth it!”

“For the record: there was no script, I never wrote it, and no actor was ever approached to play the next Doctor,” he added. “You may disagree; fine, sit in that chair and wait to be proved right. You’ll wait a lonnng time.

“Now I’m as excited as anyone to see what comes next!”

Russell returned to Doctor Who for its 60th anniversary specials, which featured the return of David Tennant and Catherine Tate to the franchise.

After that, he oversaw two series with Ncuti at the helm.

The most recent season of Doctor Who ended with a divisive episode in which Ncuti’s Time Lord regenerated into a seemingly new character, played by former cast member Billie Piper.

Ncuti Gatwa Jokes That Even He Doesn’t Understand Doctor Who Twist In SNL Monologue

Ncuti Gatwa poked fun at his stint at the helm of Doctor Who during his opening monologue on Saturday Night Live UK.

On Saturday night, the three-time Bafta nominee guest hosted the SNL UK season finale, kicking things off with a monologue referencing his career so far.

“I am so lucky, I have had so many fantastic roles in my career,” he began. “Millions of you watched me as Eric in Sex Education. And then about 12 of you watched me in Doctor Who.”

“Hey, maybe that’s why I kept crying,” he quipped.

In 2022, it was announced that Ncuti would be the first Black actor in history to take over at the helm of the Tardis as the Fifteenth Doctor in Doctor Who.

Regrettably, during Ncuti’s stint as The Doctor, the show was met with something of a backlash from far-right critics upset about the supposed “woke” direction the show was taking, which coincided with a decline in viewing figures.

Later in his SNL UK monologue, Ncuti joked that even he didn’t understand the latest twist in Doctor Who’s most recent finale.

“I have since regenerated into Billie Piper,” he continued before turning to the camera and claiming: “I don’t understand it, either.”

Billie claimed last year of her cameo: “All I can say is I was approached very last-minute, and I can’t talk about in what capacity, but I found it very emotional to film and I think it’s a really great ending.

“I found it quite moving, and it was really fun to film because it had such a sort of ‘cloak and dagger’ feeling about getting it made.

“So, yeah, I have to lie a lot about anything to do with Doctor Who, it seems.”

Thought Doctor Who Newbie Millie Gibson Looked Familiar? This Is Why

In addition to the usual fun and festivities associated with this time of year, Christmas Day in 2023 is a particularly big one for Doctor Who fans.

After those three stand-alone anniversary specials featuring David Tennant and Catherine Tate, this year’s festive special sees Ncuti Gatwa taking the lead at the helm of the Tardis for the first time.

But he’s not doing it alone.

The new Christmas episode The Church On Ruby Road also introduces us to the Time Lord’s new companion Ruby Sunday (as well as an absolute fuck-ton of goblins, but we can get into that another time).

Ruby is played by Doctor Who newbie Millie Gibson, who regular TV viewers (and, in particular, soap fans!) may well already recognise.

If you thought Millie looked a little familiar, here’s where you may well have seen her before..

In 2017, Millie made her small-screen debut in the CBBC series Jamie Johnson, which centres around the titular teenager’s personal struggles and ambitions of becoming a professional footballer.

Millie joined the show in its second season as Jamie’s schoolmate Indira Cave, sticking around until the end of the third run.

The three-part series Butterfly told the story of Maxine, an 11-year-old who is coming to terms with her transgender identity.

Co-starring Anna Friel, Emmett J Scanlan and Alison Steadman, as well as Callum Booth-Ford in his break-out role, Millie played Lily, Maxine’s older sister.

The chances are, if Millie does look familiar, it’s because you saw her in Coronation Street.

Millie was part of the long-running soap for three years, playing troubled teenager Kelly Neelan, who became the foster child for Toyah Battersby and Imran Habeeb.

During her three years on the cobbles, Kelly was part of some pivotal storylines, most notably her involvement in the death of Seb Franklin.

She also briefly dated Dev Alahan’s son Aadi, before leaving Weatherfield in 2022.

Millie’s time in Corrie may have been relatively short, but she certainly made her mark on the show, scooping Best Young Performer at last year’s British Soap Awards and making the longlist in the Serial Drama Performance category at the NTAs.

In 2017, Millie also appeared in an episode of the short-lived Kay Mellor drama Love, Lies And Records, which co-starred Ashley Jensen, Rebecca Front and Mandip Gill.

She’s also acted on stage in Prom! The Musical and Eyam, both of which were held at Manchester’s prestigious (but, sadly, now-defunct) Oldham Coliseum Theatre.

Millie also lent her voice to the Radio 4 dramas Me Myself I and Stone, but we’re guessing you won’t recognise her from those because… well… they’re literally radio plays.
