Kristen Stewart Names The 1 Thing That Would Get Her To Star In A Marvel Movie

Kristen Stewart would only make a comic book movie if one director was involved.

The former Twilight actor has spent more than a decade opting for projects a million miles from the franchise that made her a star.

While even her former co-star Robert Pattinson has since joined the superhero fray, Kristen would only follow suit if a singular vision was at the helm.

“I will likely never do a Marvel movie … That sounds like a fucking nightmare, actually,” she said on Tuesday’s episode of the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast.

“If Greta Gerwig asked me to do a Marvel movie, then I would do it,” she added later.

Greta’s Barbie became a cultural phenomenon last year and won an Oscar earlier this month.

Kristen certainly doesn’t need superhero spandex to carve out a career for herself. The acclaimed actor has come a long way since her Twilight days as Bella Swan ended in 2012, and has starred in dramas that earned her Oscar, Golden Globe and César Award nods.

While she’s grateful for her breakout role in the billion-dollar vampire romance franchise, Kristen argued in her latest interview that “big movies” can impede directors from their creative vision — and is only drawn to them because she likes “people to watch them when I’m in them”.

“The system would have to change,” she added. “You’d have to put so much money and so much into one person and … it doesn’t happen. And so therefore what ends up happening is this algorithmic, weird experience where you can’t feel personal at all about it.”

Kristen certainly isn’t the first artist to feel that way.

Directors like Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, as well as actors including Nicolas Cage and Ethan Hawke, have previously echoed the same sentiment about these “big movies” — the blinding spotlight of which Kristen has also already experienced.

The Oscar nominee was only 18 when Twilight, adapted from a Stephanie Meyer novel for young adults, launched her into stardom. The five-film franchise grossed more than $3.3 billion worldwide and made Kristen, Robert and co-star Taylor Lautner into unwitting sex symbols.

Kristen has since starred mostly in more adult dramas, but remains open to anything.

“I’m a yes man,” she said on the podcast before expounding. “The path that has been carved by my life — both the ways in which I’ve controlled that and also the ways that it has just fallen off the truck — it would be so stupid to ever be like, ‘Yes. No. Yes’.”

Taika Waititi Says He Directed ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Because He ‘Was Poor’

Taika Waititi wasn’t particularly interested in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before he became part of it, and only directed “Thor: Ragnarok” for the money, he said on Monday’s episode of the “SmartLess” podcast.

“I had no interest in doing one of those films,” Waititi said on the podcast, which is hosted by actors Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes. “It wasn’t on my plan for my career as an auteur. But I was poor and I’d just had a second child, and I thought, ‘You know what, this would be a great opportunity to feed these children.’”

“And ‘Thor,’ let’s face it, it was probably the least popular franchise,” he continued. “I never read ‘Thor’ comics as a kid. That was the comic I’d pick up and be like, ‘Ugh.’ And then I did some research on it, and I read one ‘Thor’ comic … [and] I was still baffled by this character.”

Once deemed an indie cinema wunderkind for “Eagle vs Shark” (2007) and “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” (2016), Waititi is a more divisive figure today. He’s the first Indigenous director to win an Oscar, for 2019’s “Jojo Rabbit.” At the same time, he’s been slammed as a Hollywood hack who left his roots behind. “The Taika Waititi Fatigue Is Real,” a recent headline on The Ringer declared.

Waititi made “Thor: Ragnarok” (2017), Marvel’s third movie centered on the character, after co-writing the beloved vampire comedy “What We Do in the Shadows” (2014). He went on to win a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for “Jojo Rabbit” before helming “Thor: Love and Thunder” (2022), the fourth “Thor” entry and one of the most polarising Marvel films to date.

“It’s hard to see it now but Taika Waititi was most definitely an Auteur,” wrote one person on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday. “It saddens me that the man who made beautiful films like Eagle Vs Shark, Boy, What We Do In The Shadows & Hunt For the Wilderpeople turned into a hack.”

While many on social media are frustrated at Waititi, and argued that his candor was “a big fuck you to the fans because he doesn’t actually care” about Thor, others are less concerned.

One person on X wrote: “I’m happy he was able to provide for his loved ones.”

Taika Waititi has directed two "Thor" films for Marvel Studios, and said he's open to helm another one at some point.

“Ragnarok” grossed $853 million worldwide and earned Waititi praise for his inventive direction. It’s still regarded by many as a high point of the MCU. By contrast, “Love and Thunder” ― while reportedly grossing an impressive $760 million ― was widely panned for its twee humour and lack of gravitas.

“I think we just had too much fun,” Chris Hemsworth, who has portrayed Thor Odinson for Marvel Studios since 2011, told GQ earlier this year. “It just became too silly. It’s always hard being in the centre of it and having any real perspective.”

Some esteemed auteurs, such as Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, have come under fire after voicing their distaste for the way comic book movies came to dominate Hollywood.

Waititi said he wouldn’t direct a fifth “Thor” movie, but that he’d be open to helm another entry even if other filmmakers get a crack before he returns. In Waititi’s words, he and Marvel are “in an open relationship, and it’s like if they want to see other people, I’m happy for that.”

He concluded: “I’d still get back into bed with them one day.”

Marvel Studios’ Powerful New Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Trailer Debuts At Comic-Con

The director also introduced new actors in the upcoming film, including Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams (Ironheart) and Tenoch Huerta as Namor the Sub-Mariner.

“I come from the hood, and I wouldn’t be here without inclusion,” Tenoch said. “There are kids in their hoods, looking at us, dreaming to be here.”

The trailer checks in with returning characters after the death of Chadwick’s T’Challa, and features Namor and the kingdom of Atlantis, with a glimpse of a mysterious new Black Panther.

The trailer’s underwater, ritualistic, nature and futuristic scenes are linked via a remix motif of Bob Marley’s No Woman, No Cry and Kendrick Lamar’s Alright.

“I am queen of the most powerful nation in the world, and my entire family is gone,” Angela Bassett’s Ramonda declares at one point.

The film is scheduled to hit cinemas on 11 November.

Disney has temporarily shut down the set of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever so the film’s star, Letitia Wright, can recover from an injury.

Letitia sustained the unspecified injury in late August while on a stunt rig on location in Boston, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Although Marvel Studios said at that time that the former Black Mirror star’s injury would not affect the shooting schedule, she has been in London recovering since the accident while production continued around her character.

There is no word on how long shooting will be delayed, but the film’s release date is still set for 8 July 2022.

Letitia’s character Shuri – the sister of T’Challa – is thought to be taking centre stage in the upcoming Black Panther sequel, following the death of Chadwick Boseman in August 2020.

Other cast members from the first film including Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke and Angela Bassett will be returning for the follow-up alongside Letitia, with I May Destroy You star Michaela Coel also joining the cast of Wakanda Forever.

Last month, Letitia Wright was forced to speak out when she come under fire following accusations she’d been spreading anti-vaccine views on the set of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

She denied the accusations, stating: “The report spoke about my conduct on the set of Black Panther 2. I honestly assert that this was completely untrue.”

Letitia was previously criticised for retweeting a controversial video by vaccine skeptic Tomi Arayomi, who said that fear was killing people, not Covid-19.
