‘Disgusting And Abhorrent’: Minister Slams Polanski’s Reaction To Golders Green Attack

Heidi Alexander has slammed Zack Polanski over his “abhorrent” criticism of the police response to the Golders Green terror attack.

Shilome Rand, 34, and Moshe Shine, 76, were left seriously injured in what police have described as a terrorist incident in north west London on Wednesday.

Polanski, the Green Party leader, attracted backlash this week after he reshared a post on X which suggested officers may have used too much force to detain the suspect.

After the head of the Metropolitan Police, Mark Rowley, called Polanski’s words “inaccurate and misinformed”, the Green Party leader issued an apology for “sharing a tweet in haste”.

But the transport secretary still slammed the London Assembly member during an interview on Sky News.

Alexander said: “I thought it was disgusting what he [Polanski] did and absolutely abhorrent.

“Those police officers ran towards danger, they were armed only with a Taser that they had already discharged. The guy still had a knife in his hand.”

The minister continued: “I think for the leader of a political party to jump onto Twitter, start retweeting content, criticising those policemen who responded with incredible bravery in what was a very difficult situation. I think it demonstrates that the man is not fit to lead a political party.”

Prime minister Keir Starmer already hit out at Polanski’s comments on Friday, saying his comments were “disgraceful”.

The Green Party’s leader in Wales, Anthony Slaughter, also questioned the wisdom of Polanski’s action on social media, calling it “inappropriate”.

Polanski’s apology on Friday read: “Everyone in leadership has a responsibility for lowering the temperature at a time of such tension, and I apologise for sharing a tweet in haste.

“Police responses to emergency situations such as these do need later reflection in the right forums, but I accept that social media is not the appropriate channel for doing so.

“I have invited Mark Rowley to meet with me to discuss the police response and the wider issues raised in his letter.”

Marco Rubio Weighs In On Fears US Could Back Argentina’s Falklands Claim

Marco Rubio has downplayed fears the US could back Argentina’s claim to the Falklands Islands.

It comes after a Pentagon memo leaked last week suggested the States might look to punish allies who have not supported its war against Iran.

But the secretary of state told The Telegraph: “It was just an email. People are getting overexcited by an email.

“It was just an email with some ideas.”

The newspaper suggests the memo may have been drafted by a junior staffer.

Foreign secretary Yvette Cooper reportedly raised concerns over the memo during a meeting with the top American diplomat on Wednesday, in Washington.

It remains unclear if King Charles also mentioned the topic during his state visit to the White House with Donald Trump.

Argentina has long argued that the archipelago, known to Argentinians as “Las Malvinas”, is their sovereign land.

The memo sparked widespread outrage, with Keir Starmer’s spokesperson saying he could “not be clearer” that the islands are a sovereign British overseas territory.

“Sovereignty rests with the UK, and the islands’ right to self-determination is paramount,” the representative said.

Cooper also reacted on social media, writing: “The Falkland Islands are British – sovereignty rests with the UK, self-determination rests with the islanders.”

The archipelago’s government said 99.8% of voters on the island had cast their ballot in favour of staying a British overseas territory in the 2013 referendum.

In a statement, it said: “The Falkland Islands has complete confidence in the commitment made by the UK government to uphold and defend our right of self-determination.”

Donald Trump Once Again Sides With Vladimir Putin Over The Ukraine War

Donald Trump has once again sided with Vladimir Putin over the Ukraine war – and appeared to take another sly dig at Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The US president insisted Russia’s leader “was ready to make a deal a while ago” to end the conflict.

But in an apparent reference to Zelenskyy, he claimed “some people made it difficult for him”.

His comments, in the Oval Office on Wednesday, came as the deadlock in the war continues more than four years after Putin started it by ordering his troops to invade Uklraine.

Repeated attempts by Trump to end the conflict have failed after Ukraine rejected Russian demands to hand over territory which they have failed to take by force.

Speaking about his most recent phone conversation with the Russian president, Trump said: “I said before you help me I want to end your war. We had a good talk, I’ve known him a long time.

“I think he was ready to make a deal a while ago. I think some people made it difficult for him to make a deal.”

Trump has regularly repeated Kremlin talking points about the war since being re-elected president in 2024.

Most notably, he has claimed that Ukraine, rather than Russia, actually started the conflict.

Speaking last year, the president said: “Russia is a powerful military nation.

“You know, whether people like it or not, it’s a powerful nation. It’s a much bigger nation. You don’t do that. You don’t take on a nation that’s 10 times your size.”

He also said Ukraine provoked the war by trying to get too close to Nato and the West.

“It was always a no-no, you could not. Russia said, ‘We don’t want the so-called opponent or the enemy,’ let’s use that term, ‘We don’t want them on our border.’ And they were right.”
