The UK government has sanctioned two Israeli ministers for inciting “extremist violence and serious abuses of Palestinian human rights”.
Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich will be subject to a travel ban and asset freeze under the measures announced by Britain alongside Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Norway.

The move has been condemned by the Israeli government, which said it was “outrageous”.
Both men belong to right-wing parties which help to prop up Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s fragile coalition government.
Smotrich has campaigned against allowing aid into Gaza, and also supported the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which are considered illegal under international law.
Ben-Gvir has called for Gaza’s people to be resettled from the territory.
In a joint statement with the foreign ministers of Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Norway, foreign secretary David Lammy said: “We are steadfastly committed to the two-state solution and will continue to work with our partners towards its implementation.

“It is the only way to guarantee security and dignity for Israelis and Palestinians and ensure long term stability in the region, but it is imperilled by extremist settler violence and settlement expansion.
“Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich have incited extremist violence and serious abuses of Palestinian human rights. These actions are not acceptable. This is why we have taken action now – to hold those responsible to account.
“We will strive to achieve an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the immediate release of the remaining hostages by Hamas which can have no future role in the governance of Gaza, a surge in aid and a path to a two-state solution.”

A No.10 spokesman said: “These sanctions apply to the individuals in their personal capacities, not their ministries and departments.
“Ben-Gvir and Smotrich do not speak for all Israeli people … and have a long history of dangerous extremist and inflammatory views.
“As the Israeli ambassador to the UK has said in recent interviews, their statements in their ministerial capacities do not even represent government policy.

“Their agenda and actions undermine the interests of Israeli people, including security, many Israelis see this.
“So, today, with our international partners, we have announced measures against those ministers in a personal capacity.”
In a statement, the Israeli government said: “It is outrageous that elected representatives and members of the government are subjected to these kind of measures.”
Rachel Reeves has agreed to spend £14 billion of taxpayers’ money on a nuclear plant at Sizewell C.
The chancellor will announce the move, which is part of her spending review, at the GMB Congress on Tuesday.
It is expected to create 10,000 jobs, including 1,500 apprenticeships.
Energy secretary Ed Miliband said the project, which will be the first new nuclear plant to open in the UK since 1995, will help to usher in “a golden age of clean energy abundance”.

Sizewell C was one of eight potential sites for new nuclear plants identified in 2009, when Miliband was last energy secretary.
However, the project was never completed during 14 years of Tory government.
It is expected that the plant will come on stream in the 2030s.
Reeves said the announcement showed that Labour was “investing in Britian’s renewal”.
“We are creating thousands of jobs, kickstarting economic growth and putting more money people’s pockets,” she said.
Miliband said: “We will not accept the status quo of failing to invest in the future and energy insecurity for our country.

“We need new nuclear to deliver a golden age of clean energy abundance, because that is the only way to protect family finances, take back control of our energy, and tackle the climate crisis.
“This is the government’s clean energy mission in action – investing in lower bills and good jobs for energy security.”
The Hinkley Point C nuclear plant, in Somerset, is under construction and is expected to produce enough power for about six million homes when it opens, but that may not be until 2031.
The government is also due to confirm one of Europe’s first small modular reactor programmes and will invest £2.5 billion over five years in fusion energy research as part of plans to boost the UK’s nuclear industry.
GMB regional secretary Warren Kenny said: “Nuclear power is essential for clean, affordable, and reliable energy – without new nuclear, there can be no net zero.
“Sizewell C will provide thousands of good, skilled, unionised jobs and we look forward to working closely with the Government and Sizewell C to help secure a greener future for this country’s energy sector.”

But Alison Downes of the ‘Stop Sizewell C’ group said ministers had not “come clean” about the full cost of the project, which the group have previously estimated could be some £40 billion.
“There still appears to be no final investment decision for Sizewell C, but £14.2 billion in taxpayers’ funding, a decision we condemn and firmly believe the government will come to regret,” she said.
Reform UK’s former chairman has said the party would deport all illegal immigrants, despite Nigel Farage previously saying it was “impossible”.
Zia Yusuf made the pledge in his first broadcast interview since returning to a senior role in the party.
He stunned Westminster by resigning as chairman on Thursday, only to return to the fold 48 hours later. Yusuf is now heading up Reform’s equivalent of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
On Radio 4′s Today programme this morning, he said: “Reform will deport every illegal immigrant in this country.
“I want to be crystal clear about what my position is, and Reform UK’s position is, which is we will deport everybody who is here in this country illegally, which is roughly about 1.2 million people.”
But that put him at odds with Farage, who last year declared that mass deportations could not be done.
Asked by GB News if he supported removing all illegal immigrants, he said: “It’s impossible to do. Literally impossible to do.
“For us, at the moment, it’s a political impossibility.”
Asked if it was his ambition to be able to do it, Farage replied: “No. So it’s pointless even going there.
“It’s a political impossibility, we simply can’t do it.”
In a post on X, he said: “I no longer believe working to get a Reform government elected is a good use of my time, and hereby resign the office.”
But in an equally-stunning development, Yusuf announced on Saturday evening that he was returning to the party, albeit in a different capacity.
He said in another post on X: “Over the last 24 hours I have received a huge number of lovely and heartfelt messages from people who have expressed their dismay at my resignation, urging me to reconsider.”
Claiming his resignation was “a decision born of exhaustion”, Yusuf added: “I know the mission is too important and I cannot let people down. So, I will be continuing my work with Reform, my commitment redoubled.
“Reform has come a long way since I was appointed chairman, and has moved from ‘startup’ to ‘scaleup’. Given this, and that we have now won power at a local level, I will focus on a new role. I will be running the UK DOGE team to fight for taxpayers, as well as working on party policy and representing it in the media.
“I will continue to give all my time to the most important project of my life, getting a Reform government elected with Nigel as prime minister.”

Zia Yusuf has announced he will return to Reform UK despite quitting as the party’s chair just two days ago.
Yusuf resigned after almost a year at the forefront of Nigel Farage’s rightwing party.
His shock resignation came after he said it was “dumb” of a new Reform MP to ask the government if it intended to ban the burqa.
But today Yusuf has declared that he will be leading “the UK DOGE team”, referring to the Department of Government Efficiency previously headed up by Elon Musk in the US – an idea Reform has been trying to install in Britain.
In a post on X, Yusuf wrote: “Over the last 24 hours I have received a huge number of lovely and heartfelt messages from people who have expressed their dismay at my resignation, urging me to reconsider.
“After 11 months of working as a volunteer to build a political party from scratch, with barely a single day off, my tweet was a decision born of exhaustion.

“I only came into politics out of a sense of duty, to serve the country I love.”
He continued: “I came into politics out of belief that Nigel Farage was the man to deliver that. Having read the messages, I believe in these things more than ever. I know the mission is too important and I cannot let people down.
“So, I will be continuing my work with Reform, my commitment redoubled.

“I will continue to give all my time to the most important project of my life, getting a Reform government elected with Nigel as prime minister.”
It’s a sharp contrast to his brief statement on Thursday, where he said: “I no longer believe working to get a Reform government elected is a good use of my time, and hereby resign the office.”

Vice President JD Vance said Elon Musk made a critical error attacking President Donald Trump and his so-called Big Beautiful Bill.
“I think it’s a huge mistake for him to go after the president like that,” Vance told podcaster and comedian Theo Von in an interview released on Friday. “I think that if he and the president are in some blood feud, most importantly it’s going to be bad for the country, but I don’t think it’s going to be good for Elon, either.”
The two were taping an episode of Von’s podcast, This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von, as Trump and Musk publicly traded barbs on Thursday.
As Vance and Von spoke, Musk shared a post to X, formerly Twitter, accusing Trump of holding off on the release of files about late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein due to Trump being mentioned in them.
“The fucking shit-missile is in the cannon,” Von said, before reading the post aloud to Vance.
Vance acknowledged his loyalties would always be with Trump and defended the president against Musk’s accusations, saying Trump never did “anything wrong” with Epstein. Vance praised Musk’s work with the Department of Government Efficiency and suggested Musk could just be lashing out due to frustration with the political process.
“I hope that eventually Elon kind of comes back into the fold,” Vance said. “Maybe that’s not possible now, because he’s gone so nuclear.”
Vance said it’s unfair for Musk to go after Trump for the Big Beautiful Bill — arguing it’s good but not perfect — and that Congress made the bill, not Trump.
“I just think it’s a huge mistake for the world’s wealthiest man, I think one of the most transformational entrepreneurs ever, to be at this war with the world’s most powerful man, who I think is doing more to save the country than anybody— and I’m 40 years old — anybody in my lifetime,” Vance added.
Vance also addressed a post in which Musk suggested Trump should be impeached and replaced with Vance, calling it “totally insane.”
Vance wasn’t the only Trump administration official to learn of Musk’s feud with the president while taping a podcast. FBI Director Kash Patel was taping a podcast with Joe Rogan when Musk sent the Epstein post, prompting the podcast host to exclaim, “Jesus Christ, that’s a crazy thing to say.”

“I’m just staying out of the Trump-Elon thing, that’s way outside my lane,” Patel said. “I know my lane, and that ain’t it.”
Nigel Farage knows more than most about surviving near-death experiences.
The Reform UK leader was campaigning for one of his previous parties, Ukip, on the day of the 2010 election when the light aircraft he was travelling in plunged to the ground.
Miraculously, he walked away from the wreckage and, after several more failed attempts, was finally elected to Westminster last July.

In similar fashion, those who believe that Zia Yusuf’s dramatic resignation as Reform’s chairman on Thursday night will inevitably lead to the party’s implosion are very likely to be disappointed.
That is certainly not how the development is being viewed in 10 Downing Street.
One senior ally of Keir Starmer told HuffPost UK: “Their success is because of how pissed off people are with the state of the country, not because of any great love for them or Nigel Farage.
“So it would be a mistake to think that they will just disappear because they are a bunch of clowns.”

Nevertheless, many could not resist the temptation to revel in Reform’s discomfort, pointing out that internal splits have been a recurring feature of Farage’s political career.
Indeed, it is only three months since Rupert Lowe, one of the five Reform MPs elected at the last election, was booted out of the party.
Gavin Barwell, the former Tory MP who was Theresa May’s chief of staff when she was PM, described Yusuf’s resignation as the “least surprising political news ever”.

Least surprising political news ever. @Nigel_Farage is incapable of sharing the stage. Sooner or later, anyone who tries to do so gets pushed off it. The only surprise is that they seem surprised when it happens https://t.co/djOw1Vz8vT
That view seemed to be reinforced by the resignation of Nathaniel Fried, the tech entrepreneur Zia Yusuf unveiled on Monday as head of Reform’s Doge-style cost-cutting unit.

But Chris Hopkins, political research director at pollsters Savanta, cautioned against over-interpreting the significance of Yusuf’s departure, insisting there is little reason to believe it will damage Reform’s standing with voters.
“The public aren’t going to care hugely about a party chairman resigning,” he said. “Any idea of Zia Yusuf being that important to voters and that Reform should be written off because he’s gone, I think is incredibly premature.
“Unless Farage himself is involved in serious controversy, or has to step aside, then Reform are going to continue to be strong.”

Further evidence of the right-wing party’s durability came just a few hours after Yusuf announced on X that he no longer believed that “working to get a Reform government elected is a good use of my time”.
Although they came third in the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election, it was the size of their vote share – 26% – that made political observers sit up and take notice less than a year out from the next Scottish Parliament election.
For a party which did not even exist the last time the seat was contested in 2021, and which has no organisational apparatus to speak of in Scotland, it was a remarkable result.

Luke Tryl of the More in Common think-tank said Reform “have clearly built a credible base of support since the general election in Scotland”.
“If, and it’s a real if given their recent turmoil, they can hold it together they could be a formidable force in the Scottish Parliament next year,” he said.
Reform UK insiders believe Yusuf’s resignation could even turn out to be a good thing for the party, not least because it will be welcomed by many party workers.

“He’s a hard worker and totally committed, but he’s not a good man manager,” said one source. “There won’t be many tears shed at HQ that he’s gone.”
Others have sympathy with him, insisting that Yusuf should not have been expected to put up with the online abuse which came with the job.
One source said: “The amount of shit he got from people because he’s Muslim would have been off the scale – why do you need that sort of shit?
“He was working 15 hour days for eight months and wasn’t even being paid.
“I don’t think there’s malice in him, he was just inexperienced when it came to politics. But there’s no doubt that the work he did was at least in part responsible for the party’s recent success.”
Gawain Towler, who was sacked as Reform’s chief spin doctor by Yusuf, dismissed the idea that the chairman’s departure will precipitate the party’s implosion.
“Those are just comfortable feelings for people who need comfort,” he said. “The party will go onwards and upwards from here.”
Donald Trump and Elon Musk have had an almighty falling out on social media over the last 24 hours after months of intense friendship.
The drama has unfolded rapidly, as the world’s richest man and the world’s most powerful man – who were in a deep “bromance” just weeks ago – mercilessly tear chunks out of each other online.
As it looks less and less likely that they will be able to reconcile, here’s a look at the best moments from the sudden eruption of news coming out of the US – and a glance back at how we got here…
A Quick Recap…
Musk invested $291.5m in Trump’s presidential campaign a year ago and began to speak at his rallies.
After Trump was re-elected to the White House, Musk was rewarded by being appointed to lead the new, informal advisory body DOGE (department of government efficiency).
The pair suddenly seemed inseparable, turning up public events together everywhere.
Musk – a former Democrat – started to refer to himself as the “first buddy” to the president, while Trump called him a “star” and once promoted his electric car company Tesla outside the White House.

In February, the tech magnate even posted on X: “I love @realDonaldTrump as much as a straight man can love another man.”
But tensions began to emerge after Musk began to distance himself from the president’s trade war.
He then left Doge last month, after 130 days in the role but insisted that it was always a fixed-term position and there was no bad blood.
Initially they remained on good terms and Trump threw him a lavish goodbye party.
But any cordial relations fell away when Musk suddenly described Trump’s “big, beautiful tax bill” as a “disgusting abomination” on X earlier this week, and called on the House of Representatives to “kill the bill”.

The president said he was “disappointed” with Musk’s comments, adding with finality: “Elon and I had a great relationship, I don’t know if we will anymore.”
He even claimed Musk had “Trump derangement syndrome” and missed being in government – and then it started to get really ugly…

What’s been said?
1. Musk: Was Trump replaced by a ‘body double’?
Last night, the SpaceX boss reposted historic social media posts from the president, including ones saying deficits should not be permitted.
Writing on his social media platform X, Musk wrote: “Where is the man who wrote these words? Was he replaced by a body double!?”
He also accused Trump of “ingratitude” adding: “Without me, Trump would have lost the election.”
2. Trump: Elon was ‘wearing thin’
The president hit back on his own social media platform Truth Social, claiming Tesla boss Musk went “crazy”.
He said: “Elon was ‘wearing thin,’ I asked him to leave, I took away his EV [Electric Vehicle] Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!) and he just went CRAZY!”
3. Trump: ‘Terminate Musk’s contracts’
The president said the “easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts”.
4. Musk: Trump ‘is in the Epstein files’
Without evidence, Musk wrote on X: “Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!”

5. Trump: Musk ‘turning against me’
“I don’t mind Elon turning against me, but he should have done so months ago,” Trump wrote. “This is one of the Greatest Bills ever presented to Congress, It’s a Record Cut in Expenses, $1.6 trillion dollars and the Biggest Tax Cut ever given.”
6. Musk ‘supports’ impeachment
After Trump threatened to terminate his contracts, Musk said he would “immediately” decommission its Dragon spacecraft – the only US spacecraft which can carry crew to and from International Space Station.
He backtracked a few hours later, saying he would not decommission it – but he still reposted a post calling for Trump’s impeachment.

And, amid a series of other tweets, he wrote: “The Trump tariffs will cause a recession in the second half of this year.”
7. Trump considers selling his Tesla
According to CBS, the president might sell the product he bought from Musk’s company earlier this year to promote the brand outside the White House.
He also described Musk to ABC News as “the man who has lost his mind”.
Trump even suggested the rupture could be permanent on Thursday.
“Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore,” he said. “He hasn’t said bad things about me personally, but I’m sure that’ll be next. But I’m very disappointed in Elon. I’ve helped Elon a lot.”

The tiff between two emotionally immature billionaires inspired unprecedented social media snark ― including from the president himself.
Trump took to his Truth Social platform to declare that “the easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts.”
He added, “I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!”

Elon Musk is taking his feud with President Donald Trump a step further, posting on X that the reason the Jeffrey Epstein files haven’t been released is because Trump is in them.
“Time to drop the really big bomb,” Musk posted Thursday afternoon on X, formerly Twitter. ”[Trump] is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public.

“Have a nice day, DJT!”
Epstein was a financier who died in prison while awaiting trial for sex trafficking charges in 2019. In February, the White House promised to release a trove of documents related to the case, but what was ultimately released was largely already known.
The billionaire’s “really big bomb” may be more of a dud. It’s long been reported that Trump was on Epstein’s flight logs. But Musk’s post still signals an escalation in his sudden about-turn with Trump.
The two seemed to enjoy a honeymoon period as Musk ripped apart the federal government as the head of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency. But on Thursday the two traded barbs after Musk criticized Trump’s so-called Big Beautiful Bill, a spending measure that would cut Medicaid benefits and extend tax cuts for the wealthy.

The name-calling has only escalated since Thursday morning. Trump threatened to terminate Musk’s government contracts in a Truth Social post.
“The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts,” Trump posted. “I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!”
“Go ahead, make my day …” Musk posted on X in response.
Musk then accused Trump of covering up the Epstein files.
