There’s no business like show business. And given that screen legend Meryl Streep says she once missed out on a massive movie role for being “ugly”, I’m not sure I’m interested in any operation like it.
The star revealed on The Graham Norton Show back in 2015 that she missed out on a huge role in 1976′s King Kong remake because of her looks.

The son of the film’s director Dino De Laurentiis had seen Meryl in a play and took her to meet his father.
“He had this amazing office that looked all over Manhattan,” she explained.
“I walked in and his son was sitting there, very excited that he’d brought in this new actress. And the father said to his son in Italian, because I understand Italian, he said, ‘che brutta’, you know, ‘why do you bring me this ugly thing?’.”

While she called the experience “sobering” as a “young girl”, she added that she quickly responded to the director in Italian.
“I said to him… I understand what you’re saying, I’m sorry I’m not beautiful enough to be in King Kong,” she joked.
In case you’re wondering, the role of Dwan in the 1976 movie ended up going to fellow Academy Award winner, and American Horror Story star Jessica Lange.
“I was always in plays, but I thought it was vain to be an actress. Plus, I thought I was too ugly to be an actress. Glasses weren’t fabulous then,” she explained.
Still, she seems to have moved on from those early worries.
“For young women, I would say, don’t worry so much about your weight,” she advised the graduating students.

“Girls spend way too much time thinking about that, and there are better things. For young men and women too, what makes you different or weird, that’s your strength… I used to hate my nose. Now I don’t. It’s OK.”
“I think the most liberating thing I did early on was to free myself from any concern with my looks as they pertained to my work,” Meryl Streep told Vogue in 2002.
“For an actress, worrying about appearance is a horrible, horrible trap. It’s great for acting to be unconscious of how you look and to be willing to mess up how you look, and see what that does to people.”
If you’ve seen The Substance in a cinema over the last week, the chances are you’re still thinking about some of the film’s more extreme moments, mulling over the amazing performances from Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley or perhaps just trying to wrap your head around exactly what it is you just watched.
But if you’re anything like us, you might have also been pondering exactly how such a uniquely stylised film – with all of its stomach-churning body horror and physically demanding sequences – came to be.

Well, you need wonder no more. From the script to the screen, here are 17 behind-the-scenes facts you probably never knew about how The Substance actually got made…
First of all, director Coralie Fargeat fully never expected Demi Moore to say yes when she first sent her the script

“To be honest, when her name came up, you know, when we were thinking about actresses, I said, ‘Oh, forget it. She will never want to do something like that. Let’s not lose time, you know’,” Coralie admitted to People magazine at the initial premiere of The Substance.

“And then I said, ‘Well, we have nothing to lose. Let’s just send the script’.”
And it’s a good thing she did, because we truly can’t imagine any of Demi’s peers playing Elisabeth Sparkle quite like she did.
Lead actors Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley already had a bit of a connection before they were cast

Of course, Demi worked with Margaret’s mum, Andie MacDowell, almost 40 years ago in St. Elmo’s Fire.
However, there was another connection, as Margaret was also friendly with the Ghost star’s children, Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah Willis, so before they were even on set, she told People “we felt like we knew each other”.
In keeping with the types of films that inspired it, Coralie was keen to rely mostly on practical effects rather than computer trickery, CGI or AI
“I would sometimes suggest we use VFX and she would immediately say no, because she doesn’t like VFX,” prosthetics designer Pierre-Olivier Persin told GQ.

“It’s really a movie about our bodies and about the reality of how we feel in our bodies. I needed to speak to the reality of the way our flesh can reflect our mental deformation, and I knew this had to exist for real,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.
One of the film’s only bits of CGI came at the end, when Demi Moore’s screaming face was added to the back of Monstro Elisasue, a character who was otherwise achieved entirely with prosthetics.

Meanwhile, realistic dummies were also constructed to help with the “birthing” scenes.
“We had quite sophisticated silicon dummies. We had two for the birth. We also had matching prosthetic makeup on the body double and some days we applied the makeup on Demi,” Pierre-Olivier told Marie Claire.
One thing that wasn’t real was the film’s Hollywood setting, though
Coralie explained to Rue Morgue: “We shot 100 percent of the movie in France.Cinema, to me, is the art of illusion, and that’s what I really enjoy when I make my films, to be able to cheat stuff.

“So the house was entirely shot on a set, on a stage. A huge part of our prep was deciding how we were going to recreate the view of Hollywood [from Elisabeth’s large window]. It was a major research-and-development thing, thinking about different techniques and finally using the one that would give the most life and the greatest sensation of being inside the location.”
She added that rather than recreating a “realistic” Hollywood, she wanted to “create my version of Hollywood, the one that we all have in our unconscious minds”, putting together a “kind of enhanced vision of Hollywood that fit the story”.
Despite appearances – no, that is not Hollywood
Demi Moore’s prosthetics journey took her character through five different stage, with each part having its own nickname
These were known – pretty self-explanatorily – as “Requiem” (inspired by Ellen Burstyn’s character in Requiem For A Dream), “The Finger”, “Gollum”, “Monstro” and “Gremlin”.

Before Elisabeth’s decline begins, Pierre-Olivier admits that he and Coralie clashed over how the character should look.
“I had a bit of a fight with the director because I told her that she had to be beautiful in the beginning,” he revealed to Marie Claire.
“It had to be like, ‘Why would they [fire her]?’ Because she has everything, she’s beautiful, she still has a show that’s going on very well – so I wanted for her to be sparkling and beautiful.
“Coralie was telling me, ‘No, no, no, she cannot,’ and I said, ‘Coralie, I have to have the time for her to go down deep before she has all the prosthetics and all of that’.”
Debates were had about whether Elisabeth should be glamorous at the beginning of The Substance

If you’re wondering, all those prosthetics could take Demi Moore as long as six hours to put on
And then another two hours to take them off without doing any damage to the actor’s skin which, in the middle of a tightly-scheduled film shoot, is pretty important.
Margaret Qualley really struggled with her own prosthetics
“It was torture,” she told USA Today. “I had this awesome team of prosthetic artists that put it on me and took it off of me and got me through the day and made me laugh a couple of times while I was just on the brink of panic.
“I only have one eye. I can’t hear anything. I can’t move my arms. I’ve got these retainers in that are like too huge, they just kind of cut everything. It was grueling to embody.”
She added to The Times: “It was a torture chamber. The amount of videos I have of me like, ‘I can’t do this anymore.’ It was eight days. I know that doesn’t seem like a lot.
“We would just go until I had a panic attack. And the tempting thing is you want to peel it off, but of course you can’t do that, because you’ll bring your skin with you.”

Margaret’s final transformation truly needs to be seen to be believed
Oh, and Margaret Qualley was also wearing prosthetics you mightn’t have even known were there
According to Margaret, Coralie Fargeat had envisioned Sue as a curvaceous “Jessica Rabbit”-type.
“Unfortunately there is no magic boob potion, so we had to glue those on,” she told The Times.
“Coralie found an incredible prosthetic team to endow me with the rack of a lifetime, just not my lifetime.”
Yes, Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley really did have to learn all those aerobics routine
Margaret described her own dance sequences as “brutal”, and later admitted she needed a bit of liquid courage to get through the day.
“I just got wasted first thing in the morning because I was like, I can’t do this in front of everybody,” she told The Times, claiming a combo of tequila and weed helped her through that difficult day.

For Demi, the most difficult part was the infamous scene in front of a mirror
After setting up a date with an old school friend, Elisabeth is about to head out for the evening, when she becomes distracted with thoughts of Sue, and repeatedly removes and reapplies her makeup.
“It was very difficult,” Demi told Variety, describing the scene as “one of the most heart-wrenching moments in the film”.
Apparently, Coralie required as many as 45 takes for the shot, (15 for each of the three makeup set-ups), until it reached “a point where I couldn’t do it anymore”.
Elisabeth roughly removes her makeup in The Substance
In fact, Demi said, it was actually the make-up team who intervened, which Pierre-Olivier confirmed to be the case to Marie Claire.
“My concern was she’s going to hurt herself. At the end, I did something that I never did on a movie, ever. I told Coralie, ‘That’s enough. You cannot do it anymore because she’s going to have a rash all around the face’,” he recalled.
“Coralie said, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah, okay, okay, no problem.’ But of course after the 11th [take], she said, ‘We are going to do it once again,’ and I took the remover pad and I squashed everything, and I said, ‘I removed everything, that’s over. You have already 11. You cannot have more because tomorrow she will have a red face.’”
“Normally you don’t do that! But it was too much because it was very hard on her skin,” he revealed.
All that hard work really did take its toll on both Demi and Margaret
Demi told the LA Times that for the week of shooting where she wasn’t needed on set, she ended up contracting shingles – “and I then lost, like, 20 pounds”.
For her part, Margaret said that eight days on set wearing enormous prosthetics led to her breaking out in “crazy acne for a full, long-ass time”, the effects of which she claimed could still be seen in her other 2024 film Kinds Of Kindness.
Despite all of the body horror in The Substance, Demi had a surprising choice when naming the ‘most violent’ moment of the film
Apparently, she still crings every time she sees Dennis Quaid eating all of that shrimp. And if you’re wondering, he ate it all for real, with Coralie estimating the actor probably ate around “two kilos” of shrimp while filming.
Dennis Quaid in Demi Moore’s least favourite scene from The Substance
“I will just warn everyone, the scene with Dennis [Quaid] eating the shrimp is by far the most violent scene in the whole movie. He ate, I think, four pounds of shrimp, tearing the heads off with sound effects,” Demi recalled to Seth Meyers, while gagging.
Dennis Quaid was actually a late addition to The Substance
He took over the role of Harvey from Emmy winner Ray Liotta, who was cast in the film in 2022, but died before filming got underway.
Ray Liotta

And his character’s name, Harvey, was no coincidence either
“Not at all!” Coralie said with a laugh when asked by Rue Morgue if the reference was unintentional. “To me, that’s part of the craziness of filmmaking – how with just a first name, you can characterise a whole type of person.
“It says so much about those stories that we heard everywhere, and then that kind of exploded with this specific figure, and now just this name, Harvey, can represent something that has existed in society on many different levels.
“I love to work with symbolism, and the symbolism of that name was definitely powerful and strong.”
But what about the other characters’ names in that case?
“For Sparkle, it was this idea to shine, to be under the light, and to have this moment that means happiness,” Coralie told Collider.

Age has rendered her useless to studio head Harvey (Dennis Quaid), but a mysterious drug offers Elisabeth a second chance. It’s a simple injection that allows her to live in a fresh, new, younger body — sort of. “‘Elisabeth’ – I don’t know why it came that way, but probably because it had this iconic resonance of all the big movie stars in the past.

“I remember at some point, somebody tried to make me, in production, maybe, change the name because we didn’t want to have legal issues, or I don’t know why. I said, ‘No. No way’. I don’t know. I knew this name was important.”
Interestingly, Coralie said she picked Sue as she felt it had an air of youthfulness, while Margaret pointed out that it also made the speaker make a sexualised mouth shape when saying the character’s name.
Let’s talk about that shower of blood in the finale, shall we?
“It was like a fire hose. It’s like what the firemen are using to put fire down; it was the same stuff with blood,” Pierre-Olivier told Marie Claire.
“I knew the scene needed to be massive,” Coralie also told Entertainment Weekly, estimating around 36,000 gallons of fake blood were used, which she said was essential “because the movie is about flesh, blood, and bones”.
And since we’ve gone this long without mentioning it – yes, those nude scenes were the real deal, and yes, that made things a little awkward on set
“We had to do these moments of switching, on this cold tile floor, and we’re both nude and laying there. There’s an aspect of it that was so absurd and funny,” Demi told Entertainment Weekly.
“Knowing that we had each other, looking out for each other, it’s just impossible not to find the absurdity of it humorous. At some point, I said, ‘Thank God we like each other, because otherwise this would be really awkward!’”
What could be more exciting than Lady Gaga tapping into her most eccentric side to play Harley Quinn in a new musical, we here you ask?
How about a new album from the Grammy winner inspired by her performance in the film?
Gaga has been teasing something big in relation to her stint in Joker: Folie À Deux for the past few days, with cryptic posts on her Instagram featuring messages like “I’m ready for my interview”, “no duct tape no mission” and “moondust gets everywhere”.
And she confirmed this to be the case on Tuesday afternoon when she revealed plans to release Harley Quinn, a “companion album to Joker: Folie À Deux” this Friday.
The album’s tracklist reveals the album will include a mix of covers featured in the Joker sequel – including songs popularised by Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and The Carpenters – as well as original songs inspired by Gaga’s interpretation of Harley Quinn.
However, this song will not feature on Gaga’s album, nor will it appear on Harlequin.
Joker: Folie À Deux hits cinemas on Friday 4 October.
You’d be forgiven — especially if you haven’t seen the film before — for thinking that Beetlejuice was the main character in Tim Burton’s classic movie. He’s the title character, he’s all over the promotional materials, you can’t get away from him.
However, the character actually spends very little time on-screen – and his famous pinstripe suit is even rarer throughout the film, clocking in at just two minutes.

Speaking with Variety, writers and producers Miles Millar and Alfred Gough revealed that in the original Beetlejuice film, their chaotic character only had 17 minutes of screentime, and the recently-released sequel kept this sparing approach to the character.
Miles said: “He’s such a fun character to write, but … he’s not the protagonist of the movie.
“It was tricky in terms of keeping the right balance. People love him so much. It’s called ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ for a reason, so he needs to be essential to the movie.”
If you’re not familiar with the character, Beetlejuice is a crude, hilarious and obnoxious character that creates chaos and pulls tricks whenever he’s around.

Of course, with such a huge character, who is essential to the plot and feel of the film, the creative team still had to make the most of the time he was on screen.
They explained: “It makes you think harder about what those scenes are going to be, and what his contribution to the movie is
“It feels incredibly satisfying, and like you’ve spent a lot more time with him than you think. That’s the magic trick of that character.”
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is out in cinemas across the UK now.
Last year, Channing Tatum revealed his production company had already bought the rights to Ghost with the intention of remaking it and doing “something different” with the classic film.

“I think it needs to change a little bit,” he claimed to Vanity Fair.
However, this isn’t a concept Demi seems entirely sold on.

“There are some films better left alone,” she told Variety, quickly noting that “ it depends on what the take is”.
She continued: “The success of Ghost is really about alchemy. Think about Whoopi, who anchored the comedy in a magical way. Or Tony Goldwyn, the boy next door who is the most unsuspecting villain. And the sweetness and virility of Patrick Swayze.”
“Channing is incredibly intelligent and talented — who knows what he would bring to it if it happened,” she added.

Asked if she’d reprise her role from the original, Demi said: “I’d have to see what they come up with.”
“Every story, in some ways, has already been told. The wonderful thing is the different way things can be reinterpreted,” the Indecent Proposal star told Entertainment Weekly.
“I think there are some films that often are better left not touched, and left, and then sometimes there are wonderful surprises in that reinterpretation.”

Asked by Variety why she thinks Ghost has endured after more than 30 years, she offered: “There’s something comforting about the movie. It’s about the things we might perceive as lost never really leaving us.”
Joaquin Phoenix won’t be discussing his recent controversy without the affected parties.
The Oscar winner, who made headlines last month for exiting a gay drama movie just days before director Todd Haynes was set to begin filming, addressed the matter publicly for the first time during a press conference on Wednesday.
“I would just be sharing my opinion from my perspective and the other creatives aren’t here to say their piece, and it just doesn’t feel like that would be right,” he said at the Venice International Film Festival.
“I’m not sure how that would be helpful. So, I just, I don’t think I will.”
Social media users are nonetheless still curious about Joaquin’s sudden departure from the unnamed Todd Haynes film, billed as a same-sex romance between a corrupt cop and a Native American who flee 1930s Los Angeles and head to Mexico.
Danny Ramirez, who appeared in 2022′s Top Gun: Maverick, had been cast as Joaquin’s love interest, and crews had reportedly already been hired in Guadalajara. But with no apparent plans to recast the Joker star’s role, the project has indefinitely stalled.
A representative for Todd Haynes told Entertainment Weekly on Wednesday that the director “will not be able to comment” on Joaquin’s remarks in Italy. However, producer Christine Vachon issued a blunt reaction to his abrupt departure in August.

“It has been a nightmare,” Vachon reportedly said in a now-deleted Facebook post.

Vachon, whose company has produced all of Todd Haynes’ feature films, seemed particularly miffed at Joaquin Phoenix, saying the movie “was HIS project that he brought to US” before changing his mind. A source close to the film told Variety that Phoenix got “cold feet”.
The actor has acknowledged experiencing the jitters over his acting work before, saying last year that he was “terrified” about his role as Commodus in 2000′s Gladiator.
“I’d obviously been acting since I was a kid,” he said on CinemaBlend’s ReelBlend podcast at the time. “I’d never been a part of a major production. And when I arrived on set for Gladiator, honestly, I was so sick. I was shaking.”
Joaquin went on to receive an Oscar nomination for that performance, but wouldn’t win his first Academy Award until 2020 with his part in Joker, the predecessor to Folie À Deux.
Since then, everyone from director Todd Haynes to Joaquin himself has had a go at discussing Joker: Folie À Deux’s musical elements – and whether it’s actually a musical or just a “film with music”.
Ahead of the movie’s Venice Film Festival premiere, Gaga was asked again about the project’s relationship with music.
“The way that we approached music in this film was very special and extremely nuanced,” she explained.
“I wouldn’t necessarily say that this is actually a musical, in a lot of ways it’s very different. The music is used to really give the characters a way to express what they need to say, because the scene and just the dialogue is not enough.”

Joaquin won an Oscar for his performance in the first Joker film, and returns for the sequel alongside new addition Lady Gaga as the iconic Batman villain Harley Quinn.
The film’s cast also includes Zazie Beetz (returning from the first Joker film), Steve Coogan, Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener.
Joker: Folie À Deux hits cinemas on Friday 4 October.
During a joint interview with Brad Pitt in the September issue of British GQ magazine, George revealed he was “irritated” with the Pulp Fiction director, after the filmmaker claimed he wasn’t a real movie star.
“Quentin said some shit about me recently, so I’m a little irritated by him,” the Gravity star explained. “He did some interview where he was naming movie stars, and he was talking about [Brad Pitt], and somebody else, and then this guy goes, ‘Well, what about George?’. He goes, he’s not a movie star.
“And then he literally said something like, ‘Name me a [George Clooney] movie since the millennium.’ And I was like, ‘Since the millennium? That’s kind of my whole fucking career’.”
As Brad laughed, George continued: “So now I’m like, all right, dude, fuck off. I don’t mind giving him shit. He gave me shit.”
George and Quentin actually previously shared the screen in the 1996 horror movie From Dusk Till Dawn.
While the two-time Oscar winner didn’t actually direct the film in question, he did write it, and was seemingly heavily involved in the casting process, even selecting George because he thought they looked so similar.
And, George had some feelings about that comment, too, in a clip which resurfaced on social media last year…

If you saw Longlegs over the weekend, the chances are you may have left the cinema with a few questions. “What did I just watch?” being one of them, and “Am I going to be able to sleep tonight?” potentially being another.
And then, of course, there’s the titular character’s name. Despite everything we do end up learning about Nicolas Cage’s Satan-worshipping serial killer, it’s never actually made clear where he got the name Longlegs from.

Well, director Osgood Perkins – the brain behind Longlegs – has cleared things up. Sort of.
Asked by Variety where Longlegs’ name came from, Oz said: “We writers just like words. We like how certain words sound and look and shape and feel.”
“Yeah, it has daddy longlegs and a creepy-crawly aspect to it,” he continued. “But it also feels ’70s to me — almost like a Led Zeppelin song or someone would have on the side of their van, something groovy like that. It feels like a vintage word that people wouldn’t toss around much today.
“It positioned the movie in a weird place. You don’t get to fully understand it. It doesn’t fully fit, which is more alluring to me and creates a curiosity that I think is important.”

Oz also revealed that the character of Longlegs is one that he’s had in the back of his mind for some time.
“[He] was a character that had tried to make himself fit into other projects that I had worked on,” the filmmaker said. “When you’re writing all the time and generating specs and no one’s paying you or you don’t have any source material, you’re making shit up all the time. You end up with a universe of things that are swirling around, and you try to pull them out and stick them in.
“Longlegs was an entity, this shabby – is he a birthday clown? Is he a puppet master? Does he deal with stuffed animals? Is it little pianos? You start to wonder about this person who comes to your kid on their birthday and you’re in another room and you don’t know they’re interacting and that’s weird.
“He doesn’t abduct the kids because we’ve seen that 1,000 times before. He kind of talks to them. You start to be curious about that.”

It’s been 20 years since Shaun Of The Dead arrived on screens and kick-started Edgar Wright’s iconic Cornetto Trilogy (later completed by Hot Fuzz and The World’s End).
The endlessly quotable, quintessentially British and laugh-out-loud zom-rom-com is an undisputed classic that still holds up two decades later.

It’s also the movie in which the world got to know the loveable comedic duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, who star in the zombie apocalypse comedy as a directionless salesman and his lazy roommate, who must ward off an invasion by any means necessary.
If you’re already planning your latest re-watch, here are the behind-the-scenes secrets you probably didn’t know…

The whole concept of the Shaun Of The Dead was inspired by an episode of Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright’s sitcom Spaced. In the episode titled Art, Simon’s character stays up all night playing the video game Resident Evil, when he starts to hallucinate a zombie invasion.
“I wrote an episode of Spaced where my character fights zombies in his flat. We had such a fun time shooting it, we thought we ought to make a zombie movie – like it was that easy,” Simon Pegg told The Guardian in 2020. “We really were so naive. We thought we could do anything.”
The cast and crew did not have high hopes for the film’s success

It’s hard to imagine now when we look back at the cult success of the film, but Shaun Of The Dead was not at all guaranteed to be a critical or commercial success.
“I didn’t know if anyone was going to see this film apart from my mum,” Simon Pegg told GQ in a recent retrospective.
Edgar Wright agreed: “I don’t think we had any thought of what it would be beyond the UK. And even that was like, please let it go down well in the UK… everything that came afterwards, travelling around the world with it, was a life-changing bonus.”

The team were keen not to water down the Britishness of Shaun Of The Dead

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Simon Pegg said the success of the film was a “vindication of our intentions” to make the film “very, very British”.
“We didn’t make any concessions to sort of transatlantic-ism,” he added.
Movie execs wanted more A-listers in the cast
We of course now know Nick Frost and Simon Pegg as an inseparable comedic duo, but apparently industry folk were confused as to why director Edgar wasn’t vying for bigger names.
“There were some times people… didn’t understand necessarily why Simon and Nick together was so important,” Edgar told GQ. “There were a couple of times [where they said], ‘Ed is like the funniest part of the film. Why wouldn’t you go with somebody bigger?’.”
He added: “It was literally that thing of, like, ‘Could you get an American in this part? Could Jack Black play this part?’. And we were like, ‘No, it has to be Nick’.”

And some pretty big names were actually thrown into the mix
Speaking during a recent oral history with IndieWire, Edgar recalled how they were asked to look at “casting up” to get some more high calibre names involved for the roles of Shaun’s girlfriend Liz and mother Barbara, which were written specifically for Kate Ashfield and Penelope Wilton.
“We met Kate Winslet about playing Liz and she liked it, but ultimately didn’t do it,” Edgar recalled.

Another British acting legend was very nearly involved
Two-time Oscar nominee and (at the time) future winner Helen Mirren was also considered for the role of Barbara.
In an excerpt from the book You’ve Got Red On You – about the making of Shaun Of The Dead – published in Rolling Stone, Edgar recalled the acting icon’s “brilliant” response.

“She read the script and said, ‘I’m passing on the role of Barbara. I would only do the movie if I got to play Ed.’ Her reason was, ‘Well, Ed’s the funniest part.’”
As we know, it was Nick who went on to portray Ed, but we can’t help but admire The Queen actor’s resolve.

Shaun Of The Dead ended up being really popular with some Hollywood heavy-hitters
Speaking to GQ, Edgar reeled off the names of people in the industry who supported the film with press quotes: Quentin Tarantino, Stephen King, Sam Raimi, Guillermo Del Toro, Robert Rodriguez and Frank Darabont being among them.
To say thank you, they even made each of them personalised versions of Shaun’s badge with their own names on it.

A legend of the zombie genre was particularly impressed by the film

Shaun Of The Dead was clearly an homage to the zombie genre, so much so that it impressed Night Of The Living Dead director George A. Romero.
In a 2008 interview with CinemaBlend, the director recalled: “So I get this message from these guys, and I didn’t know who they were. Some cat named Edgar Wright: ‘I made this movie, I hope you like it.’
“So next thing I know, some cat from Universal shows up like a guy with a bomb suitcase, the fucking print is chained to him. He starts saying, ‘We want to show you this movie at the local theatre. We arranged it.’ I see this movie a little too dark, but it was hilarious, man! And I flipped for it.”
That record-tossing scene actually required artist’s permission
One of the most memorable scenes from the film sees Shaun and Ed toss (very carefully chosen) vinyl records at two approaching zombies. It turns out they couldn’t just launch any old album, they actually had to get permission from the artists.
Edgar recalled Smooth Operator singer Sade Adu being particularly generous with her sign off for Diamond Life being one of the chosen albums. “It’s a tough thing to get someone on board [by] saying, ‘We want to trash your album!’” Edgar said in a quote from You’ve Got Red On You.
“Sade, who I’ve never met, signed her release and was down for it. To me, she’s the coolest person ever. It’s like, you don’t know us from Adam, we actually break your record in the shot, and you let us clear your likeness. That’s amazing.”
But it was a hard “no” from one British music legend
The scene also depicts the pair deciding which Prince albums they should use as weapons, but it was nearly David Bowie at the centre of those deliberations.

“The only other bit that we wrote, as far as I recall, is at one point we did David Bowie albums,” Edgar told GQ. “I think it was like: “Hunky Dory, no. Ziggy Stardust, no. The Labyrinth soundtrack…”
“I think we reached out to David Bowie’s publicist, and I heard something secondhand that he was touchy about Labyrinth, so that was a no.”
But they had more luck when it came to another musical sequence
Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen isn’t the most obvious choice to soundtrack a violent zombie assault, but director Edgar was a huge fan of the iconic band. Thankfully, they were able to get the sign-off for this one.
“We choreographed the entire fight to that song, which was a real worry because it hadn’t been cleared for use and could have ended up being way too expensive,” Simon told The Guardian. “So we wrote a begging letter to Queen guitarist Brian May and he was lovely about it.”
They let bored local kids be in the film
Edgar recalled to IndieWire how there was a “group of disgruntled teenagers who were throwing stones at the camera because we were on their turf”.
He went on: “In an attempt to make peace with the teenagers, we promised that they could be in the film. A couple of days later, they went through makeup, dressed up as zombies and they’re in the film — you can see them when Shaun is next to the garden fence!”
And just in case you were wondering about the significance of the Cornetto…

When Nick’s character needs a Cornetto to help him nurse a hangover, this was actually borrowed from director Edgar’s real life.
“The appearance of the Cornetto ice cream in Shaun Of The Dead is because it was a hangover cure for me in college and because it seemed like a funny thing for Nick Frost’s character to want on a Sunday morning,” Edgar shared in a piece with Focus Features.
“It’s popped up again because we had gotten free Cornettos at the Shaun Of The Dead premiere, so we thought if we wrote Cornetto into Hot Fuzz, then we would get them at that premiere as well. For some reason we did not, and I felt let down by the lack of free ice cream but by that point it was too late.”
