Host Henry Louis Gates Jr reveals on the show that Odenkirk’s sixth great-grandfather was Germany’s Duke of Plön, who was related to the royal families of Europe. But the actor is quick to assert that he’s “not a monarchist”.

“I’m an American,” Odenkirk says in a teaser clip. “I don’t believe in, uh, that. You know, I feel like it’s a little twisted.”
He adds: “I understand why society built itself around monarchs and leaders. … But I think that we’ve gotten to a better place with democracy, and we should keep going down that road.”
It’s at that moment that an excited Gates primes Odenkirk for a follow-up revelation, saying: “You and King Charles III are 11th cousins.”
The actor is initially at a complete loss for words before guffawing — and cheekily reassessing his stance.

“Well, maybe I’ll change my mind on that,” quips Odenkirk. “Oh, that is crazy!”
Gates’ team of genealogical researchers went back generations to trace Odenkirk’s lineage to a fifth great-grandfather named Friedrich Carl Steinholz, who was born out of wedlock in 1755 and fathered by the Duke of Plön.

Ken Clarke has blasted Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda bill, warning that overturning a Supreme Court ruling is “very dangerous” amid fears of the UK slipping into an “elected dictatorship”.
The Tory grandee, seen as a leading figure on the liberal wing of the party, has previously backed the deportation policy, arguing no-one had a better solution to the problem caused by small boats.

But the former chancellor now thinks the policy has hit a “brick wall” after being vetoed by the Supreme Court.
In the Lords, Clarke said that the government over-riding the court risked a situation where “you claim that the colour black is the same as the colour white, all dogs are cats”.
Lord Ken Clarke: ” I always fear… about the risks of moving towards an elected dictatorship in this country. The sovereignty of Parliament has its limits, which are the limits of the rule of law… in a liberal democratic society such as ours.”#RwandaPlanpic.twitter.com/V2OxoQ0nTX
He said: “If we pass this bill, we are asserting as a matter of law that Rwanda is a safe country for this purpose, that it is always going to be a safe country for this purpose until the law is changed.

“And the courts may not even consider any evidence brought before them to try to demonstrate that it’s not a safe country.
“This is a very dangerous constitutional provision.
“I hope it will be challenged properly in the court because we have an unwritten constitution, but it gets more and more important that we do make sure that the powers are in this country are controlled by some constitutional limits and are subject to the rule of law.
“Claiming the sovereignty of parliament … you claim that the colour black is the same as the colour white, all dogs are cats, more seriously that someone who’s been acquitted of a criminal charge is guilty of that criminal charge and should be returned to the courts for sentence.
“Where are the limits?
“I always fear as time goes by in my career, echoes of the warnings that (former lord chancellor) Quintin Hailsham used to give us all about the risks of moving towards an elected dictatorship in this country.
“The sovereignty of parliament has its limits, which are the limits of the rule of law, the separation of powers and what ought to be the constitutional limits on any branch of government in a liberal democratic society such as ours.”

Speaking during the bill’s second reading debate in the Lords, the Tory peer said the bill was “a step too far for me”.
He added: “And I don’t think I can possibly support the bill unless it is substantially amended as it goes through this house and we should urge the Commons to revise it.”
It came as the Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill cleared its first major hurdle in the House of Lords, after peers voted 206 to 84, majority 122, against a motion designed to block it
Education secretary Gillian Keegan has been chastised by the Commons speaker for giving lengthy answers that may have been a “ploy” to stop scrutiny from MPs.
Lindsay Hoyle told the education secretary to be “punchy” with her responses as she fielded questions in the house.
As Keegan was discussing exams in the aftermath of the crumbling school buildings crisis, the speaker said: “We’re having this problem every time. If it’s (topical questions), they’re meant to be short and punchy. I’ve got to get these members in and all you’re doing is stopping the members not getting in, and if that’s the ploy, it’s not going to work.”
At the height of the problem last year, Keegan became notorious after she said she had done a “fucking good job” over the scandal.
The minister also claimed that others “have been sat on their arse” while she has been dealing with the crisis.
A Conservative MP has revealed he quit his £120,000-a-year ministerial job last year because he could not afford soaring mortgage costs.
George Freeman, who resigned as science minister in November, said his repayments jumped from £800 a month to £2,000.

The MP for Mid Norfolk would have been receiving an annual salary of around £118,300.
As an MP, his salary is £86,584 – but he is free to take up a lucrative second job if free of the ministerial work.
Mortgage rates have spiralled as the Bank of England hike interest rates to curb inflation, while the Liz Truss’s disastrous stint as PM added a premium to mortgage woes.
In a Substack blog post last week, he wrote: “Why did I stand down?
“Because my mortgage rises this month from £800pcm to £2,000, which I simply couldn’t afford to pay on a Ministerial salary.
“That’s political economy 2.0.
“We’re in danger of making politics something only Hedge Fund Donors, young spin doctors and failed trade unionists can afford to do.”

Freeman also told The New Statesman on Monday his finances “are not what they were – at all”, having gone through “a very painful divorce” and with parents “who are both getting elderly”.
Nikki Haley called Donald Trump his “own worst enemy” while appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday.
With the Republican presidential primary down to two candidates, Haley has been enduring a majority of Trump’s rage in recent weeks.

But the former South Carolina governor told “Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker that she thinks the former president’s outbursts only prove how he’s unfit for a second term as president.
“I laugh every time I see one of his tweets, every time I see him throw a temper tantrum, because I know Donald Trump very well,” said Haley, who served as his U.N. ambassador for two years.
“When he feels insecure, he starts to rail, he starts to rant, he starts to flail his arms and he starts to get upset.”
“When he feels threatened, he starts to throw all kinds of things out there,” she continued. “I would always tell him he was his own worst enemy. He’s proving that right now.”

Recently, Trump’s attacks on Haley have gotten increasingly racist. He has resorted to mocking Haley by her given name, Nimarata, and suggesting she is ineligible for office as the daughter of Indian immigrants. (Haley was born in South Carolina, making her eligible for the presidency.)

Elsewhere in the interview, Haley also said she thinks that Trump’s lack of composure in the courtroom is a cause for concern.
After Trump lashed out at a New York jury’s $83.3 million defamation judgment last week, Haley said Americans can “see that he’s completely distracted; they see that he’s going on these rants about how he’s the victim, and I think that’s exactly what we don’t need a strong leader to be.”
“These court cases are going to keep happening. One by one, we’re going to keep seeing him in a courtroom and we’re going to see him come out and do a press conference,” she said. “That’s not what you want a president to be, but more than that, that’s not what we want Russia to see, that’s not what we want China to see and that’s not what we want Iran to see.”

In addition to his personal attacks on Haley, Trump has also tried to strong-arm her potential donors.
On Wednesday in a Truth Social post, he said anyone who donates money to his opponent would be “barred from the MAGA camp.”
Haley called his warning “totally unhinged” during an interview on Fox News on Friday and her campaign later announced it had received $1 million in donations after Trump’s threat.

After wowing critics in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley biopic (and landing himself an Oscar nomination in the process, no less), Austin Butler is now back in action in an exciting new project.
However, what you might not realise is that there’s every chance you’d already seen him either on TV or the silver screen long before Masters Of The Air or Elvis came along.
Here are nine of Austin Butler’s former projects you may well have seen him in without realising…
Hannah Montana
Austin began acting professionally as a teenager, appearing as Lionel Scranton in over 40 episodes of the Nickelodeon series Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide.

But that’s far from the only teen show Austin appeared in during that period.
As well as Zoey 101, iCarly and Wizards Of Waverly Place, Austin shared the screen with Miley Cyrus in an episode of Disney’s Hannah Montana, when he was around 15 years old.
Ruby & The Rockits

Starring teen idol David Cassidy (and created by his brother Shaun), the sitcom Ruby & The Rockits centred around a once-famous musical family who have retired from the limelight and their lives after fame.
Austin appeared as the lead character Ruby’s son Jordan Gallagher, who gave several musical performances over the course of the show.
Aliens In The Attic

Having already racked up appearances in several teen comedies, Austin’s first feature-length film role came in 2009, when he appeared in the family adventure Aliens In The Attic.
For those unfortunate enough to have missed it, the film – which co-starred Ashley Tisdale and Carter Jenkins – deals with a family whose children discover some aliens.
Spoiler alert: They’re in the attic.
Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure
And speaking of Ashley Tisdale, her iconic High School Musical character received her own spin-off, Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure, in 2011.
The musical film reunited Aliens In The Attic stars Austin and Ashley, with the former playing an aspiring film director who convinces Sharpay to be the star of his next project. It’s completely ridiculous, and therefore a must-watch.

The Carrie Diaries

While we’re on the subject of must-watches, we were skeptical about Sex And The City prequel The Carrie Diaries when it was first announced, but ended up loving it, and we definitely don’t feel it gets enough love.
Austin was one of the main cast members in both seasons of The Carrie Diaries, playing Carrie Bradshaw’s first ever love, Sebastian Kydd.

Yoga Hosers formed part of filmmaker Kevin Smith’s “True North trilogy”, alongside Tusk and Moose Jaws.
Like the rest of the trilogy, Yoga Hosers featured appearances from Johnny Depp and his daughter Lily-Rose, Justin Long and Haley Joel Osment, as well as Adam Brody, Tony Hale and Nastasha Lyonne.
The comedy horror – which centred around two teenage yoga enthusiasts who end up fighting a battle with zombie Nazis – was completely panned by critics.

Another comedy horror in Austin Butler’s back catalogue, which boasted a seriously impressive star-studded cast including Billy Murray, Tilda Swinton, Chloe Sevingny and Adam Driver.
Austin’s character was one of a trio of travellers, sharing the screen with Selena Gomez and Luke Sabbat.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
Undoubtedly Austin’s most prolific role to date was in the Oscar-winning Quentin Tarantino film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

Austin appeared as Charles Denton “Tex” Watson, a real-life member of the so-called Manson Family, who was responsible for the murder of Sharon Tate, an event which is reimagined by Tarantino within the film.
According to the Alzheimer’s Society, there are currently 900,000 people living with dementia in the UK and this is projected to rise to 1.6 million by 2040.
The NHS states that some of the early symptoms of dementia include memory loss, difficulty concentrating, confusion, and mood changes. However, one doctor speaking to The Express has highlighted that there is a hidden symptom that can be a sign of the syndrome.

While there is no cure for dementia, early detection can ensure that the condition is managed and you can get the help you need.
The ‘hidden’ sign of dementia
Dr Rayaz Malik, professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine in Qatar warned that taking naps throughout the day could be a sign of dementia saying, “Taking frequent daytime naps is also a notable behaviour associated with certain conditions, including dementia, and losing interest in friends and family is a sign that may indicate dementia.”
This is backed by Alzheimer’s Research UK. Dr Susan Mitchell, Head of Policy from Alzheimer’s Research UK said, “Unusual sleep patterns are common for people with dementia, but research suggests that sleep changes could be apparent long before any symptoms like memory loss start to show.”
According to research, this appears to only apply to older people. In something of a paradox, scientists in the US have suggested that those who nap more frequently when they get older are more likely to get dementia, but those who have dementia are more likely to nap.

So, how long should we actually nap for?
A healthy nap is around 15-45 minutes, according to experts. However, the NHS urges that if you experience excessive daytime sleepiness, you should speak to your GP as it could be a sign of something more serious.
The birth rate in the United States has shown an overall decline over recent decades. People are choosing to have fewer children, having children later in life and increasingly deciding to remain child free. There are multiple factors contributing to this trend, including access to reproductive healthcare (limited to a much smaller number of states since the fall of Roe) and increasing educational and career opportunities for women.
More and more, Millennials say that they’re choosing not to have kids because they can’t afford it. A Newsweek poll of 1,500 adults from April 2023 that asked, “If the cost of living was lower, would you consider having a child?” found that 30% of respondents overall answered yes. Among respondents ages 18-34, that jumped to over 50%.

A number of Millennials have expressed their hesitations about having children on TikTok, with some citing the US Department of Agriculture estimate that the cost of raising a child born in 2015 would be $233,610 over the first 17 years.
In response, one 22-year-old TikToker (who does not have children) posted a rebuttal of these claims, explaining that, in her view, families paying for childcare were choosing to “prioritise” their careers, as opposed to having one parent stay home to care for the children. If Millennials simply choose instead to prioritise having children, she insinuates, they could do so. She gives the example of her own family. She states her father chose to “grow” his salary in order to support her mother and the 11 children she stayed out of the workforce to raise.
Her video, which she took down and then made public again, has gone viral and the commenters have spared her no mercy in their criticism. Yet the overall tone of her claim ― that parents could afford children if only they put in a little more effort ― is not uncommon.
But it’s unfair to compare the financial situation of Millennials to that of previous generations. While the cost of housing has risen precipitously, salaries have not gone up in sync — and most of us don’t live in fairyland gardens where we can water our salaries and watch them grow.

In 2023, the median price of purchasing a home in the US was $412,000, or 5.5 times the 2022 median household income of $74,580. In 1980, the median price of a home was $47,200, which was only 2.2 times the 1980 median household income of $21,020. Millennials aren’t imagining things. Their salaries don’t stretch half as far.
In addition, the soaring cost of higher education means that many are shouldering crushing student loan debt. Americans owe a total of $1.75 trillion in student loans, an average of $28,950 per borrower. This debt makes it difficult to save for a down payment on a home, or whether unpaid leave from work to care for a new child. (The US has long been an outlier among developed nations in offering zero weeks of paid parental leave.)
Then there is the cost of childcare itself. While it’s true that a number of people, usually women, leave the workforce to care for children because the cost of childcare totals as much, or more, than their salaries, there are also reasons people keep a job beyond the arithmetic of a pay cheque. Some people work in order to maintain health coverage for their families. The consequences of leaving the workforce aren’t limited to the present: workers lose out on seniority, pensions and social security earnings when they take time away.
But it’s not unusual for a parent’s salary to be decimated by childcare costs. The Department of Health and Human Services established 7% of family income as the benchmark for affordable childcare. Yet, according to Care.com’s 2024 Cost of Care Report, families are spending an average of 24% of their income on childcare. Sixty percent of families are spending 20% or more.

First, the former president was ordered by a jury to pay writer E. Jean Carroll $83.3 million for damages from defamation, and then he had to suffer the slings and arrows of snarky social media users.
Carroll, a longtime advice columnist, has alleged that she was raped by Trump in 1996 in a dressing room at Manhattan’s Bergdorf Goodman department store.
After she wrote about the experience in 2019, Trump called her a “whack job” and a “fraud,” inspiring her to sue for defamation. That resulted in Trump being found liable for defaming and for sexually abusing Carroll (though not raping her). He was also ordered to pay her $5 million in damages.
Still, that first penalty did not stop Trump from defaming Carroll, which led her to sue him again and Friday’s massive judgment.
Many people on X, formerly Twitter, used the verdict as an excuse for a popular social media activity: busting Trump’s chops.
