Sydney Sweeney Appears To Take Swipe At Critics Of Graphic Euphoria Scenes

While Sydney remained tight-lipped on the debate throughout the season, it seemed she had something to say about it all in a post shared on Instagram before the season finale aired.

Alongside a series of behind-the-scenes snaps from season three – including some of the more racy set-ups involving her character – Sydney said simply: “It’s called… acting.”

In the past, Sydney has repeatedly called out the “double standard” she has noticed around the way male and female actors who have appeared nude on screen are treated.

Back in 2022, she told The Independent: “When a guy has a sex scene or shows his body, he still wins awards and gets praise. But the moment a girl does it, it’s completely different.”

Elsewhere in the same interview, she also made a point of saying: “I’ve never felt like Sam [Levinson, Euphoria’s creator] has pushed it on me or was trying to get a nude scene into an HBO show. When I didn’t want to do it, he didn’t make me.”

He claimed: “In terms of the story that we set out to tell, which is a story about addiction and its consequences, this feels like the end to me.”

Sydney Sweeney is lifting the lid on shooting one of Euphoria season three’s most memorable sequences.

In the most recent episode of the divisive drama, Sydney’s character Cassie was seen embracing a different sort of lifestyle afforded to her by her new OnlyFans career, including a lavish influencer party.

While this party eventually descended into more of the extreme scenes that has seen Euphoria’s third iteration prove divisive among viewers, the Emmy nominee has made it clear that she had a blast filming the episode.

“Maddy transforms Cassie back into Cassie’s most glorious self, and she takes it from there,” she explained in a behind-the-scenes video posted on HBO’s YouTube page.

“There is nothing like a Euphoria party. Every season, Sam [Levinson, Euphoria’s creator] always writes in one.”

Admitting that she uses these scenes to live vicariously through her character, Sydney continued: “I don’t really go to parties, so this is my time where I get to have fun through Cassie. And she lets loose! This girl knows how to party, she’s having the time of her life.”

Interspersed with shots of Sydney and hundreds of extras partying, she added: “I was like, ‘are we ever going to call cut?’. I didn’t know what to do! I don’t know how to dance. I thought my wig was going to fly off, I’m whipping my hair all over the place. It was crazy.”

Over the last few weeks, Cassie’s Euphoria storyline has continued to raise eyebrows, with many critics describing some of Sydney’s scenes as “degrading”, “horrible” and comparable to a “humiliation ritual” for the actor.

Sam Levinson said earlier this week: “What’s interesting is if you push it a little bit, [Sydney] becomes brilliant. You just do a few more takes, and she can reach these levels that are very honest emotionally, but also deeply funny.”

He added: “She’s able to anchor the scene with this kind of madness and chaos going on around her.”

OnlyFans creators have been weighing in on the storyline involving Sydney Sweeney’s character in the new season of Euphoria.

In the first two instalments of the current season, viewers discovered that Cassie, played by the Emmy nominee, had turned to modelling on the adults-only website OnlyFans to help fund her lavish wedding to Jacob Elordi’s Nate.

As the storyline progressed, Cassie began taking part in increasingly extreme photo-shoots, which has so far generated a lot of debate among critics and Euphoria fans.

Off the back of the controversy, many real-life OnlyFans performers have been sharing their takes on Cassie’s story arc, with a range of different opinions.

Alex Paige Moore has suggested that Euphoria oversimplifies how easy it is to become successful on OnlyFans.

“It’s not as simple as ‘send a message and make $50’ – if it was, everyone would be doing it,” Alex claimed.

“Most creators start on $1–2k (around £750–£1480) a month. It takes serious strategy, social media presence and consistency to build it up.”

She pointed out: “Cassie’s already rich – she’s just doing it because she wants more money, and for Nate to spend more money, which I think is a negative representation of the sort of girl that does only OnlyFans.”

Alex started her OnlyFans to help earn financial independence to leave a toxic relationship while still being able to spend time with her young daughter.

“I feel like for a lot of people, joining OnlyFans is more of a last resort,” she added. “They’re not spoiled brats. They’re not mean people that’re giving their partners ultimatums.”

She also took issue with the portrayal of OnlyFans modelling as “easy” , noting: “The idea that it’s easy work, easy money – that you don’t have to do much – makes it sound like a lazy job, which it really isn’t.”

Fellow performer Amira Evans agreed: “OnlyFans is NOT a get rich quick scheme. People need to understand the stigma and risks. The internet is forever.”

Others were more enthusiastic about OnlyFans modelling being represented on a show like Euphoria.

“I actually think it’s a positive step,” Bonnie Locket claimed. “For a long time, there’s been a lot of stigma, and shows like this open up the conversation.”

Alix Lynx went on to say: “The reality is that people are on OnlyFans and so I love that it’s being shown on such a big show.”

Meanwhile, Taila Maddison noted: “I think it’s actually a really good thing that OnlyFans is being represented in Euphoria. It might boost its popularity a bit and remind people of what it is.

“A lot of people already subscribe, but this could catch some viewers by surprise and spark new interest.”

Looking ahead, Taila suggested: “I do think Euphoria might initially portray joining OnlyFans as something a bit humiliating, because that’s often the reality when people first find out – especially friends and family. There’s usually shock, like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe they’re doing that’.

“But I’m hoping the narrative shifts over the season and people start to admire her for it. It feels like they’re trying to reflect real reactions first, and then maybe challenge them later.”

Euphoria star Chloe Cherry was also a pornographic performer and OnlyFans model before landing her role in the hit US drama.

Asked for her take on the OnlyFans storyline last week, Chloe told Refinery29: “People have the weirdest, ideas and like fantasies of sex work being so empowering and we’ve seen all these news stories where they’re like, oh, OnlyFans models makes $700 billion in a month, and everyone’s like, ‘whoa’. I literally just think that these things are a bit of smoke and mirrors, actually.”

Chloe claimed: “It’s really hard to say if it would give [Cassie] any power. Obviously, Cassie is extremely attractive, so it probably would lead to her making a lot of money. But it just feels crazy as fuck to see somebody living like Cassie turn to sex work. It’s like, ‘holy shit, that’s where we’re at in society?’.”

Sam Levinson is finally giving Euphoria fans what they want.

Dedicated viewers of the award-winning US drama have patiently endured the last year and a half without as much as a hint about its anticipated third season.

Fortunately, showrunner Levinson made an appearance in Elle’s recent cover story about lead actor Zendaya — and finally dished.

Audiences last saw Zendaya’s character, Rue, in the season two finale in February 2022 and watched her loved ones stage a drug intervention. While a voiceover confirmed she stayed sober for the rest of the school year, Levinson teased more upcoming hardships.

The showrunner told Elle he plans on turning the next season into a “film noir” that uses Rue as a vehicle to “explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world”.

Further details remain sparse, though Zendaya – who is also an executive producer on the show – previously teased what she wanted to see in the new season.

“I would like to explore Rue’s sobriety and that journey for her and what that looks like,” she told Extra in April 2022. “What the ups and downs of that journey for her might look like. We see her in the midst of it. It would be nice to see her close to the other side.”

Levinson praised the Emmy and Golden Globe winner for always creatively pushing herself. He told Elle: “She’s the most competitive person I know, in a good way. She’s constantly growing as an artist and always seeking a challenge. She’s never complacent.”

The cast and crew of Euphoria have been busied by an ongoing strike, however, as the Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America unions demand fair residual pay from streamers, guidelines on the use of artificial intelligence and other protections.

In July, the Euphoria team faced a major loss when show standout Angus Cloud was found dead in his home at 25 years old. His charming drug dealer character, Fezco, was last seen getting arrested during a raid.

“I can’t wait to get back to work with everyone,” Angus previously told E! News in October. “I feel like it’s been way too long. I just can’t wait to see everyone and working on set again. Definitely not sure what to expect for Fezco, but knowing Sam, it will be good.”

The show commemorated Angus Cloud by adding a note in his honour to multiple episodes, while co-stars including Sydney Sweeney and Alexa Demie remembered him in their own ways. Zendaya, meanwhile, published a lengthy tribute to her late friend and colleague on Instagram.

“I know people use this expression often when talking about folks they love…‘they could light up any room they entered’ but boy let me tell you, he was the best at it,” Zendaya wrote at the time. “I’d like to remember him that way.”

Angus Cloud, the actor who played Fez on the HBO series Euphoria, has died at age 25, his family said in a statement on Monday.

“It is with the heaviest heart that we had to say goodbye to an incredible human today,” Cloud’s family said in a statement to TMZ, which first reported his death. He died at his family’s home in Oakland, California, according to NBC News.

“As an artist, a friend, a brother and a son, Angus was special to all of us in so many ways. Last week he buried his father and intensely struggled with this loss. The only comfort we have is knowing Angus is now reunited with his dad, who was his best friend. Angus was open about his battle with mental health and we hope that his passing can be a reminder to others that they are not alone and should not fight this on their own in silence,” the family’s statement continued.

“We are incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of Angus Cloud. He was immensely talented and a beloved part of the HBO and Euphoria family. We extend our deepest condolences to his friends and family during this difficult time,” accounts for HBO and Euphoria tweeted on Monday.

Besides Euphoria, Cloud had two other roles in current projects, including Freaky Tales which is in post-production, and an untitled thriller that was in the process of filming.

Cloud also appeared in Juice WRLD’s music video for the song Cigarettes in 2022 and Becky G and Karol G’s music video for the song Mamiii. The Euphoria actor also played roles in the 2021 film North Hollywood and The Line, which was released on June 9.

Euphoria was Cloud’s first acting job, he told Variety in a 2022 interview where he also discussed surviving a fall as a teenager in which he broke his skull. He told Variety that acting is “the best job” he’d ever had.

“But there’s plenty of other stuff I could see myself doing,” he added. “Buy a boat. Find an island. Post up in a tent. See what happens next.”

HuffPost spoke to five makeup artists to find out their favourite trends of 2022. Here’s what they couldn’t get enough of and what they loved trying on themselves.

Think glitters, bold colours and bling. The HBO series had us glued to our screens ― partly because of Zendaya’s phenomenal acting and partly because of the innovative makeup. Our experts praised the looks.

Millie Kendall, founder and CEO of the British Beauty Council: “Euphoria has been a bit of a moment on TikTok. Lots of glitter and shiny shadows. Appliqués and jewels, generally adornments. The combination of dewy, glowy skin with shimmery eyes has been great. It reminds me of a ‘nightclub at 4am’ kind of look.”

Rose Gallagher, makeup artist and beauty content creator: “I loved the whole Euphoria style makeup of super fresh skin with playful pops of colour on the eyes. 2022 has been a year that really made me rethink how I use coverage and made me want to use as little as possible so that the focal point of my makeup was those pops of color, not the complexion. I loved the start of 2022 when we would have a weekly new Euphoria episode and people would replicate the [looks]. Cassie’s unhinged moments with little pops of gems and glitter were a real highlight!”

Lately, we have seen people re-creating real feelings through their makeup, from being cold to sad and everything in between. Want to look like you’ve been crying? There is now a makeup trend (and tutorial) for that.

Ehlie Luna, pro makeup artist and beauty content creator: “Going a step beyond the ‘clean girl’ makeup aesthetic, we have seen more people leaning into how they feel or how they want to feel. The makeup look that took over the past two years will serve as a sort of home base, with playful touches ranging from cold girl, indie sleaze, to dark feminine and more layered on top.”

There was some controversy with Hailey Bieber’s “brownie glazed lip” this year, but the brown lip liner and gloss combo still has been a much-loved look, since it suits everyone and gives J.Lo 90s vibes.

Donni Davy, head Euphoria makeup artist and co-founder of Half Magic: “I love the shift from pinky nude lips to brownie nude lips. Browns and rosy browns just look so stunning on everyone, and there are so many directions to go here. Soft and diffused, punctuated with darker brown liner, and worn with a sparkly gloss on top, to name a few. Half Magic’s Rosy Brown Mouth Cloud Lip Cream in Magic Brownie is my favourite! It’s velvety soft, hydrating and buildable.”

Kendall: “I noticed a throwback to the J.Lo lip – the darker liner and the defined, glossy pout. I wouldn’t have normally taken to it – I was there the first time around! But I think that the colors of lip liners are so sophisticated now, with Vieve, Charlotte Tilbury and Lisa Eldridge really owning the space and delivering superb colour options that have made this quite a wearable look.”

Blush, blush, blush

Makeup artists and beauty influencers have fallen hard for cream and stick blushes, which give a natural sheen to the skin and blend seamlessly. TikTok is full of blush looks featuring purple blush, blush draping, lipstick worn as blush and more techniques that have gone viral.

Luna: “After a period of blush ‘fear,’ we’ve gone all in. Every season there are more ways to wear it like high placements, the W trend, and editorial draped styles. With more shades and formulas than ever before, there’s something here for everyone.”

Davy: “I think purple blush really made a splash in 2022 and is still making its mark. I love to convince people whenever I can to try this one out! I’m loving the shift from pink blush shades to the surprisingly flattering violet. Violet has the cool tones of purple in it, but it’s also super warm for a purple and actually has quite a bit of pink in it so it doesn’t look completely jarring on the cheek, especially if you’re blending in just a sheer layer. My favourite way to wear it is with a periwinkle or lilac shimmer on top as a highlighter. It’s a delicate, yet simultaneously edgy, way to wear blush and I’m obsessed with it.”

Rainbow eyes

A fun and colorful look reminds us that love is love and that makeup exists for people to have fun with. Why not play with colors and try something new?

Kendall: “This year has been really focused on eyes, I particularly loved the focus on neon eyeliners. I have been wearing quite a lot of neon blue with blue mascara the last few months.”

Gallagher: “I loved the Pride makeup and colourful rainbow-inspired looks (creator Call Me Chim is incredible for those). Not only were the colourful looks just beautiful, but I loved the comradery and celebration of the LGBTQ+ that came along with them.”

The eyeliner trend has really evolved this year, partly thanks to Davy’s work on Euphoria. Now, there are more tools than ever before to help you achieve the perfect flick, from silicone guides to liners designed for those with fine motor issues.

Gallagher: “The siren eyes trend [which is connected to Middle-Eastern makeup looks] felt really classic and sexy. I definitely think this would look great on everyone. What I loved about it is that it is a little undone, all about framing the eyes and creating a feline shape but without the constraints of perfection. It would still look great five hours into wearing.”

Old Hollywood glam

The focus here is on beautiful smoky eyes, bold eyelashes and the glam reminiscent of the 30s to the 50s in Hollywood and beyond.

Gallagher: “Around the time of the Marilyn Monroe film launching onto Netflix, there were some beautiful videos using Marilyn’s techniques (Sophie Mand did some great ones). I thought it was lovely that we were seeing these tips for really timeless, old-Hollywood glamour on a platform saturated with newness. It felt very achievable to recreate something we were so familiar with and also seemed like a trend you could jump on just using whatever you already have in your makeup bag.”

Metallic eyes

This trend is perfectly suited for the festive season and beyond. Metallic eyes are much-loved by makeup artists and are suitable even for makeup newbies.

Hughes: “I think metallic eyes suit everyone. I feel people are scared of shimmer and glitter – perhaps they think it will make their skin look a certain type of way. I think it looks gorgeous on everybody, it just depends on how you apply it. If you are worried it would look too much, just start with a little bit, press it onto the centre of the lid and work it around. Start with a little bit and add more when you’re comfortable.”

Natural-looking skin

The natural-looking “no-makeup makeup” trend continued this year, and the “clean girl makeup” trend is also here to stay, according to the experts.

Luna: “Makeup artists, myself included, have been going deeper with makeup techniques on TikTok and Instagram. We have seen the use of multiple powders in makeup routines – from pigmented loose to translucent pressed powders, baked and finishing powders.”

Hughes: “The makeup trend that stood out to me the most was glossy skin, letting the skin speak for itself! Something I’ve been a fan of my entire career. Think dewy, skin, like no-makeup makeup.”

Bleached brows

A polarising trend this year, the bleached brows have taken our TikTok screens by storm with tutorials gone wrong and some gone right. If you decide to try out this trend – which was seen on the likes of Julia Fox, Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner ― it might be best to leave it to the professionals.

Kendall: “The 90s eyebrows are back – a bit thinner and bleached. I think the thinner brow is nice, I have never been that big on the overly brushed up bushy brow or the overly neat flat brow.”
