Nancy Pelosi Announces Retirement From Congress

WASHINGTON — Representative Nancy Pelosi (Democrat, California) announced on Thursday that she won’t run for reelection in 2026, marking the end of her decades-long run in the House and capping off her legacy as one of the Democratic Party’s most powerful and effective leaders.

“I have truly loved serving as your voice in Congress,” Pelosi said in a six-minute video that showcases her tenure and her city’s history.

“That is why I want you, my fellow San Franciscans, to be the first to know. I will not be seeking reelection to Congress,” she says. “With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative.”

Pelosi, 85, has represented her progressive San Francisco district since 1987. First coming to the Congress to tackle the AIDS crisis devastating her community, she rose through the ranks of her party to make history, again and again. She was the first woman elected House minority whip in 2001, the first woman elected House minority leader in 2002, and, most notably, the first woman to become House speaker in 2007, and again in 2019.

As party leader, Pelosi kept a tight grip on her colleagues for decades. She was known for her mastery of vote-counting and legislative strategy, and her ability to bring wavering Democrats on board with her plans by hauling them into private meetings, plying them with pieces of dark chocolate and cutting a deal before they walked out the door.

Pelosi has been a boon to Democratic fundraising for decades. In 2014, for example, one news outlet suggested she was single-handedly keeping House Democrats afloat that year.

Her legacy as speaker includes her strong opposition to the Iraq War during President George W. Bush’s tenure and her pivotal role in passing landmark legislation under President Barack Obama. She was key to some of his greatest successes, including the Affordable Care Act, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform bill, the repeal of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which infused $841 billion into the economy to stave off pain from the 2007-09 recession.

During President Donald Trump’s first term, Pelosi was his most formidable adversary. She routinely called him out for his lies and recklessness, and threw up barriers to his many efforts that Democrats opposed. Trump was no fan of hers, often calling “sick” or “crazy,” but even he praised her political savvy when Democrats retook the House in 2018, saying she deserved “a lot of credit.”

Pelosi weathered numerous intra-party scuffles as leader. She angered progressives in 2019 by refusing to support impeachment proceedings against Trump, though she later agreed to hold hearings and Trump went on to be impeached later that year. She also upset some Democrats last year by not-so-subtly signalling that then-President Joe Biden should drop his bid for reelection after his disastrous debate performance against Trump in June.

The California Democrat had been fueling speculation about her future for weeks. She said last month that she’d be making an announcement on whether she was running again, but only after the November 4 elections. She was waiting to see the outcome of a California ballot initiative she strongly supported: Proposition 50, a statewide redistricting measure that Democrats are pushing as a counter to gerrymandering in Republican-led states. It passed.

There’s not an obvious successor for Pelosi’s House seat. Democrats currently running for this seat include California state Senator Scott Wiener and Saikat Chakrabarti, a former tech executive who was also former chief of staff to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (Democrat, New York).

Trump Rips ‘Disgusting Degenerate’ Nancy Pelosi In Saturday Night Stock Rant

US President Donald Trump furiously accused former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (Democrat, California) of shady stock market dealings this weekend.

Shooting off an angry Truth Social post on Saturday night, the president wrote, “Crooked Nancy Pelosi, and her very ‘interesting’ husband, beat every Hedge Fund in 2024. In other words, these two very average ‘minds’ beat ALL of the Super Geniuses on Wall Street, thousands of them.”

“It’s all INSIDE iNFORMATION! Is anybody looking into this???” he then asked.

Hiding no hints of bitterness, Trump added, “She is a disgusting degenerate, who Impeached me twice, on NO GROUNDS, and LOST! How are you feeling now, Nancy???”

Her husband Paul Pelosi’s seemingly knack for trading has long been a topic of conversation.

For years, Paul Pelosi’s portfolio has regularly outperformed top hedge funds, raising questions about if his wife’s role in Washington, DC, has helped give him an unfair edge on the market.

Estimates from stock research platform Quiver Quantitative peg the Pelosis’ holdings to be worth around $164 million.

Pelosi has claimed she has no say in her husband’s trading decisions and defended his stock dealings as his right to participate in the free market.

Though she previously balked at the idea of enacting trade restrictions on politicians, Pelosi seems to have shifted her position in recent days.

Last month, she endorsed Senator Josh Hawley’s (Republican, Missouri) bipartisan backed HONEST Act (Halting Ownership and Non-Ethical Stock Transactions, which would ban federal legislators, the president and the vice president from trading stocks.

“The American people deserve confidence that their elected leaders are serving the public interest, not their personal portfolios,” she told The Associated Press in July.

In 2023 when the legislation was originally introduced, it was dubbed the PELOSI Act, short for Preventing Elected Leaders from Owning Securities and Investments.

According to Bloomberg, the president’s net worth has more than doubled since he launched his last campaign for office.

Trump and his family’s cryptocurrency coins have banked them hundreds of millions of dollars.

Tech mogul Jeff Bezo’s Amazon Studios purchased rights for a Melania Trump documentary for $40 million in January, nearly three-times more than the next closest offer, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Nancy Pelosi Joins Calls To Halt US Weapon Transfers To Israel

House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi has split with President Joe Biden by joining progressives in their calls to halt both current and future US weapons transfers to Israel.

Forty members of Congress signed a letter to Biden, dated Friday, stating that the deadly attack on World Central Kitchen aid workers necessitates investigation into whether Israel is using US weaponry “in compliance with US and international law.”

Pelosi’s support, though, is particularly significant given her long working relationship with Biden.

Seven aid workers who had coordinated their movements with the Israeli military and traveled in clearly marked vehicles were struck Monday and killed, stirring further global outrage over Israel’s handling of the war.

One of the workers was an American citizen. All were working to feed Palestinians in the Gaza Strip as it faces famine.

On the day of the World Central Kitchen attack, the Biden administration reportedly approved an arms shipment that included hundreds of 2,000-pound bombs and other, smaller bombs. A sale of up to 50 F-15 fighter jets is also reportedly pending.

“We strongly urge you to reconsider your recent decision to authorize the transfer of a new arms package to Israel, and to withhold this and any future offensive arms transfers until a full investigation into the airstrike is completed,” read the letter to Biden and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

“If this strike is found to have violated US or international law, we urge you to continue withholding these transfers until those responsible are held accountable,” it continued. “We also urge you to withhold these transfers if Israel fails to sufficiently mitigate harm to innocent civilians in Gaza, including aid workers, and if it fails to facilitate – or arbitrarily denies or restricts – the transport and delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza.”

Other signees included Representatives Jamaal Bowman, Cori Bush, Debbie Dingell, Barbara Lee, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib.

Biden has voiced strong support for Israel since Hamas-led militants killed more than 1,100 people in their Oct. 7 attack on the country — sparking large protest votes in some states’ Democratic primaries.

His tone, however, shifted this week during a discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Biden called for an “immediate cease-fire” and told Netanyahu that future US support will depend on what Israel does to protect civilians and aid workers in the Gaza Strip. The current situation was “unacceptable,” Biden said.

Hours after the discussion, Israel announced that it would be opening two humanitarian aid routes into Gaza.

The Israeli military also said Friday that it had dismissed two officers and reprimanded three others in connection with the World Central Kitchen attack.

House Republicans have scheduled a vote next week on a resolution criticizing Biden’s policy shift as “one-sided.”

Trump Flips Out In Hellishly Bizarre New Social Media Meltdown: ‘I Wasn’t Scared’

Donald Trump seems to have hell on his mind.

The former president invoked the perpetual flames of the underworld in two separate rants on Sunday against Representative Nancy Pelosi (Democrat, California) and the US women’s national soccer team.

Early in the day, he launched his attack on the former House speaker, who on Friday said Trump looked like a “scared puppy” during his arraignment last week on federal charges of election obstruction and conspiracy.

“I wasn’t ‘scared,’” Trump insisted in a post on his Truth Social website. “Nevertheless, how mean a thing to say! She is a Wicked Witch whose husbands journey from hell starts and finishes with her. She is a sick & demented psycho who will someday live in HELL!”

Trump wasn’t done raising hell just yet.

When the US women were eliminated from the World Cup later on Sunday, the former president ― like many others on the right ― was weirdly thrilled.

He called the loss “fully emblematic of what is happening to the our once great Nation under Crooked Joe Biden” and accused the players of being “openly hostile” to the country.

“WOKE EQUALS FAILURE,” he wrote, then took a shot at star player Megan Rapinoe. “Nice shot Megan, the USA is going to Hell!!!”

Trump’s critics raised hell in return:

Nancy Pelosi’s Husband Assaulted Inside Their Home

An attacker broke into the San Francisco home of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and assaulted her husband with a hammer, police said Friday.

San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott said officers arrived at Pelosi’s house for a “well-being check” at around 2:27 am, where they saw Paul Pelosi and an adult male both holding a hammer.

“The suspect pulled the hammer away from Mr Pelosi and violently assaulted him with it,” Scott said. “Our officers immediately tackled the suspect, disarmed him, took him into custody, requested emergency backup, and rendered medical aid.”

Scott identified the suspect as a 42-year-old named David DePape. The man will be charged with attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse and burglary.

Both Pelosi and DePape were taken to a hospital, Scott said.

“Mr Pelosi was admitted to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital where he underwent successful surgery to repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands,” Pelosi’s office said later on Friday. “His doctors expect a full recovery.”

DePape entered the home looking for the speaker, a source briefed on the assault told HuffPost, but she wasn’t there. Before the attack, the intruder confronted Paul Pelosi, saying, “Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?”

It’s eerily similar to what a Donald Trump supporter chanted as a mob searched for Nancy Pelosi during the siege of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Rioters ransacked the speaker’s office that day.

DePape’s internet presence suggests an obsession with far-right conspiracy theories, and some Democrats quickly condemned Republicans for the attack.

“Now is not a moment for timidity. Let’s be direct. Today’s violence seems to be the direct product of Big Lies from many Republicans and Republican propaganda organs about Democrats and American democracy,” representative Bill Pascrell said in a release.

“Turn on rightwing media on any given day or night. You will see frothing hosts shrieking unspeakable lies and unfounded conspiracy theories about women, religious and ethnic minorities, city residents, young people, and scores of others Americans,” Pascrell said.

The US Capitol Police announced that they and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are helping San Francisco police investigate the attack.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called the attack “a dastardly act.” The White House said President Joe Biden called Nancy Pelosi to express support. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy also reached out to the speaker, NBC News reported.

The attack comes amid heightened concerns over both crime and political violence. Within minutes of Pelosi’s statement, a Fox News host described the attack as an example of how “crime hits everybody”.

Democratic representative Jackie Speier, whose district includes part of San Francisco, suggested early on Friday that the attack could be political.

“While the motive is still unknown we know where this kind of violence is sanctioned and modeled,” Speier wrote on Twitter.

Nancy Pelosi is one of the best-known politicians in the country. She is also one of the most vilified Democrats in Republican campaigns, which invoke her name as a symbol of Beltway liberalism.

In August, Paul Pelosi pleaded guilty to misdemeanour charges of driving under the influence. He also has faced scrutiny for his stock trades, and some lawmakers have pushed for a ban on members’ spouses trading stocks.

Years-old blogs that appear to belong to DePape show posts about LSD, Burning Man and quartz crystals. But more recent posts show disturbing signs of right-wing radicalization. Two posts from August 26 of this year read “Pedophile normalization” and “black pilled”, the latter being internet slang for becoming hopelessly nihilistic regarding the government, society or one’s own life. Another post, from August 26, reads, “Hitlery did nothing wrong.”

Others complain about “communist propaganda”. One post, simply labeled “Q” ― an apparent reference to the QAnon conspiracy theory universe ― references a meme about the conspiracy theory involving wealthy pedophiles trafficking children through the furniture website Wayfair.

Another website with posts authored by a David DePape shows him closely following various right-wing political obsessions, like false claims of widespread voter fraud, Justice Department special counsel John Durham’s investigation. Many others show his obsession with “the Jew media”, including a recent post about the war in Ukraine: “The more Ukrainians die NEEDLESSLY the cheaper the land will be for Jews to buy up.”

“This morning’s terrifying attack on Paul Pelosi by a man obsessed with election conspiracies is a dangerous reality encouraged by some members of my own party,” representative Adam Kinzinger wrote Friday.

In earlier years, DePape apparently had other fringe interests.

A 2008 article in The Oakland Tribune noted that DePape and Gypsy Taub, a well-known nudist activist in San Francisco, were hosting a community Thanksgiving meal for hundreds of people.

In 2013, Taub staged a naked wedding to Jaymz Smith on the steps of San Francisco’s city hall. Ahead of the occasion, SF Gate referenced a “David dePappe”, spelled with an extra “p”, who it reported was “a hemp jewelry maker and father figure who will double as best man.”

Matt Shuham, Mollie Reilly, Will Tooke and Paul Blumenthal contributed reporting.

Bono Really Wrote A Poem About Ukraine And Nancy Pelosi Read It Aloud

In a statement that will perhaps prompt people to read it more than once, Nancy Pelosi has read aloud a poem by singer Bono about Ukraine during an annual lunch to mark St Patrick’s Day.

On Thursday, the speaker of the US house of representatives told a press conference that during the Annual Friends of Ireland Luncheon in Washington she would be reading verse about the war in eastern Europe penned by the U2 frontman.

Despite even fact-checkers suggesting this was not the case, it came to pass.

For clarity, the poem appears to be an original composition, and not My Friendly Epistle posted on the band’s Twitter feed by Ukrainian writer Taras Shevchenko, which was originally published in 1845.

For completists, here’s Bono’s poem in full:

Oh, St Patrick he drove out the snakes
With his prayers but that’s not all it takes
For the snake symbolises
An evil that rises
And hides in your heart, as it breaks

And the evil has risen my friends
From the darkness that lives in some men
But in sorrow and fear
That’s when saints can appear
To drive out those old snakes once again

And they struggle for us to be free
From the psycho in this human family
Ireland’s sorrow and pain
Is now the Ukraine
And St Patrick’s name now Zelenskyy

In case it needs stating, Bono is likening the legend of Ireland’s patron saint – St Patrick – banishing snakes from the country to Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s heroic efforts to drive Russia out of his country.

Once the reading finished, Pelosi introduced a 25th anniversary performance of Riverdance.

Twitter couldn’t quite believe what was happening:
