‘What, A New One?’ Care Home Resident’s Hilariously Honest Reaction To Meeting PM Andy Burnham

A care home resident’s honest reaction to meeting Andy Burnham left the prime minister looking a little embarrassed on Wednesday.

The PM announced his plan to overhaul the social care sector yesterday before speaking to several pensioners to promote his ideas.

But one encounter – caught on camera by Channel 4 – quickly went awry.

“You are the local candidate, are you?” The man said.

“Oh no,” Burnham said, smiling. “No I was a local candidate, I had a by-election a few weeks ago. But, I’m now the prime minister.”

“You what?” The man said.

“He’s the prime minister,” someone else told him.

“What, a new one?” The pensioner with incredulity.

Burnham nodded, adding: “Yes, another one.”

“They keep changing every five minutes!” The man said, and the PM laughed.

“What, a new one? They keep changing every five minutes.”

The encounter was reminiscent of the viral TV moment when a woman, known only as Brenda from Bristol, reacted with nothing but shock when she found out Theresa May had called a snap election in 2017.

She said: “You’re joking – not another one!”

Her response was not unwarranted, as it came after the 2016 referendum on EU membership and the 2015 general election.

Similarly, Burnham is the UK’s seventh prime minister in a decade.

David Cameron stepped down as PM after the country voted to leave the EU in 2016 and Theresa May quit in 2019 over not being able to get a Brexit deal through the Commons.

Boris Johnson called a snap election in 2019 when he took over from May, but was kicked out of office in 2022.

His successor Liz Truss spent less than two months before the Tories forced her to resign over her mini-Budget.

Rishi Sunak was then voted out in the 2024 general election and Keir Starmer quit this summer after it was clear he had lost the support of Labour MPs.

Burnham was the Greater Manchester mayor up until he won the Makerfield by-election in June, and was the only Labour MP to put his name forward to replace Starmer.

Channel 4 Presenter Uses ‘Basic Economics’ To Debunk Reform Leader’s Latest Migration Claim

Reform UK’s Richard Tice was torn apart on Channel 4 News last night when he tried to blame the NHS’s struggles and our economic woes on immigration.

Tice – who does not have a seat in parliament at the moment – said the Tories are terrified of his party splitting their vote, because Brits know the Conservatives have “broken Britain”.

He explained: “Slower healthcare, more health delays, ambulance delays, A&E delays, greater waiting lists – the greatest ever. Why?

“Because the huge extra pressure, because the Tories have betrayed Britain on mass immigration.”

The Conservatives vowed to cut migration, but recent stats showed net migration reached a historic high under Tory rule.

Channel 4 News’ Cathy Newman replied: “Well, the waiting lists could be just as much to do with the fact that we’ve got an ageing population, a sicker population.

“Migrants tend to be pretty young,” she pointed out.

“Actually it’s all to do with the extra surge in demand,” Tice said.

’What, the NHS waiting list?” Newman said with incredulity. “All the migrants are young, they’re not going to put particular pressure on…”

“So you’re saying that none of the 2.5m who have arrived here in the last two years, none of them are using the NHS? That’s ridiculous, Cathy. It’s a serious contributor,” Tice replied.

“No, I’m just querying your evidence for that,” Newman said.

“The evidence for that is… All elements of healthcare is a disaster,” Tice said.

Newman asked if he really believed Reform’s “net zero immigration” policy would actually boost the economy.

Tice said “absolutely”, and claimed that “basic economics” shows this would drives up demand for Labour.

But Newman hit back: “On the contrary, the basic economics is that the economy is fuelled by migration and that’s why successive administrations have allowed migration to flourish.”

The far-right party has only one MP right now – Tory defector, Lee Anderson – although Tice is standing in the Boston and Skegness constituency.

Nigel Farage, the party’s honorary president, was rumoured to be considering a return to lead Reform in a move expected to give the party a much-needed boost.

However, Farage claims he was “wrong-footed” by Rishi Sunak’s sudden election news and so has decided not to stand.

He said: “What I could not do in the space of six weeks… was to find a constituency from scratch and go around the country.”

Joe Lycett’s ‘Cancelled’ Podcast Is Actually A Massive (And Important) Stunt… About Poo

Well, well, well. Many of you thought the sudden cancellation of Joe Lycett’s new podcast – the Turdcast, in which the comedian was set to interview celebrities about their best poo stories – was a bit suspect.

For those of you catching up, yesterday the 35-year-old invited members of the public in Liverpool to “spend a penny/drop a plop” (his words, not ours) before being interviewed about their horrific toilet stories for the podcast.

Or, at least, that was the plan. Because, sadly for Joe, that’s not quite how things turned out.

He confirmed on X that a “mechanical fault occurred” with the public toilet, leading to a “small spillage” and the eventual cancellation of the event – and the INDEFINITE CANCELLATION OF TURDCAST.

Now, this morning, Lycett has confirmed that the whole thing has been a total ruse.

Taking to social media this morning (in a video titled ‘A Statement From Miss Sue Idge’ he revealed: “I thought I would record a little video to explain what’s been going on over the last few days and give my side of the story.

“You might have seen there was a little incident in Liverpool on Thursday. So what I like to do is big stunts that get people talking about the big issues.

“Sometimes those stunts go to plan, and sometimes they absolutely don’t,’ he added, before being presented with a giant fake poo on a plate.

“On this occasion, everything went exactly to plan. Of course I didn’t spill raw sewage into the Royal Albert Dock. I’m not spilling s**t in public everywhere, who do you think I am, GB News?

“No, it was fake sewage from a fake toilet, to promote a fake podcast. Turdcast was never real, although we did record a real one with the real Gary Lineker.”

Okay, so what was the point?

“I spilled fake sewage because I wanted to get people talking about the billions of litres of real sewage that are released every year by our water companies,” he continued.

“Last year, according to one analysis the water companies paid shareholders £1.4billion in dividends. That’s a lot of money that could have been used to improve the sewer network and reduce spills.

“We’re asking the water companies to stop paying dividends and instead invest the money in solving this problem.”

He is now is asking people to ‘write to your water company’ to sign up to Joe’s Poo Promise.

But wait – there’s more. Lycett will now feature in a new Channel 4 documentary which will will investigate water companies as ‘the UK faces a sewage crisis’.

The doc, titled Joe Lycett vs Poo, will be an hour long and will investigate ‘how our waterways have become so polluted and why water companies have been allowed to taint one of our most precious resources.’

Tom Beck, head of live events and commissioning editor for Channel 4, said: “Joe is our leading mischief maker; he uses humour, wit and absolute fearlessness to call out companies, celebrities and even our politicians.

“He’s taken on the oil giants and David Beckham; now he’s highlighting one of our biggest environmental issues by diving into the murky waters of the utility companies polluting our seas and rivers.

“It will be provocative, revealing, important and feature lots of poo jokes. Who else could promise all of that?”.

The documentary is set to air in early 2024.

UK Journalists Taken Into Gaza For First Time Describe The ‘Wasteland’ And ‘Hell’ Of War Zone

Israelis soldiers have started to take international news crews into Gaza, and UK journalists have now reported on the “hell” they’ve discovered in the active war zone.

While reporters inside the Palestinian territory have been covering the war since it began a month ago, foreign journalists are only now being allowed into the Gaza Strip under the surveillance of the Israel Defence Force (IDF).

Israel then declared war, launched a series of air strikes and a ground invasion in the north, while putting the whole of Gaza under siege. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza say more than 10,000 Palestinians have been killed so far.

Each broadcaster has made it very clear that they had maintained editorial independence over their own reports, but various parts of the footage had to have IDF approval before it could be released.

The Israeli forces would only take journalists if their reports did not reveal anything about their position.

Jeremy Bowen, the BBC’s international editor, released his report into Gaza on Wednesday night.

He explained: “We got out of the back of an armoured vehicle and walked into a wasteland.

“After a month of air strikes and more than a week of tanks and troops, every building I saw was damaged or destroyed.”

The IDF showed each journalist what it described as a weapons factory in a building where a family clearly lived upstairs.

The army told reporters that was an example of Hamas using civilians as human shields.

Channel 4′s Secunder Kermani also went into Gaza with IDF, and explained: ″Coming here with them is the only way for foreign journalists to get a first hand glimpse of this deadly conflict.”

His report, also released on Wednesday, focused on the Gaza civilians trying to move to the south of the territory, as on Israel’s instructions.

He showed how two Palestinian men were detained for “acting suspiciously”, and filmed how Israeli soldiers called out in Hebrew to the stream of evacuees just in case any Israeli hostages were among the crowds.

Kermani then went to the areas of Gaza which have already been “reduced to rubble in an Israeli strike”, and explained “this is the hell they are running from” in the north.

Paddy McGuinness Announces Early Exit From Channel 4 Show Due To Family Reasons

Paddy McGuiness has made a surprise exit from Don’t Look Down for Stand Up To Cancer due to a family matter.

The former Take Me Out presenter co-parents his three children – Penelope, Leo and Felicity – with his ex-wife Christine McGuinness, after the couple parted ways after 11 years of marriage in 2022.

The 50-year-old was taking part in terrifying challenges, most of which were suspended hundreds of feet above the ground, in order to raise money for the charity with nine other celebrities.

Paddy explained his departure to his co-stars and said: “Unfortunately today I’ve got to go home and I might not be back for at least a week. Co-parenting… We’ve no one at all to help us with the kids.”

He said that their three children, who all have autism, “need me or Christine there or people who are in our support network”.

“I’ll have a hell of a lot of catching up to do when I get back,” he said.

“I’m gutted because the guys will be 10 metres up in the air and it will feel like starting again but there’s just nothing I can do about it.”

Paddy isn’t the only star who has been forced to leave the high-adrenaline Channel 4 show, after former Coronation Street actor Beverley Callard had to pull out on medical grounds.

The soap legend told her teammates: “I’m going to try not to cry… At some point, I damaged my kidney and I’ve seen a doctor and I can’t wear a harness, I can’t do any sport at the moment and I’ve got to go.”

She added: “I am broken-hearted, I was loving it. I don’t want to go, I so badly don’t want to go…”

Paddy and Beverley joined Olympic champion Victoria Pendleton, Kimberly Wyatt, Anton Ferdinand, David Ginola, Charley Boorman, GK Barry, Fats Timbo and Chris Hughes on the show.

The government’s decision to press ahead with plans to privatise Channel 4 has been condemned as “very unconservative” by a senior Tory MP.

The channel was launched in 1982 as a publicly-owned, commercially-funded public service broadcaster with a remit to deliver content to under-served audiences.

It does not receive public funding but is ultimately owned by the government, with all money going back into the broadcaster, which commissions all of its programmes from independent producers.

On Monday, a statement by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport said the sell-off would allow the channel to “thrive in the face of a rapidly-changing media landscape” while a government source said the move would “remove Channel 4’s straitjacket”.

A spokesperson for Channel 4 said it was “disappointed” with the decision, but would “continue to engage” with ministers on the process to “ensure that Channel 4 continues to play its unique part in Britain’s creative ecology and national life”.

The move represents Boris Johnson’s government’s latest broadcasting shake-up after signalling it wants to find a new funding model for the BBC after the licence fee funding deal expires in 2027. Ministers have previously indicated Channel 4 could be sold off by the end of the current parliament in 2024.

The announcement faced an immediate backlash, with Labour calling it a “shameful decision” and even Conservative MPs joining the criticism.

Damian Green, Tory MP and a former Cabinet minister, said: “The sale of Channel 4 is politicians and civil servants thinking they know more about how to run a business than the people who run it. Very unconservative. Mrs Thatcher, who created it, never made that mistake.”

Conservative MP Sir Peter Bottomley said he opposes the privatisation as he feels it is “bad for the diversity of television, bad for viewers and bad for independent producers”.

Labour’s shadow culture secretary Lucy Powell described the move as “cultural vandalism”.

She said: “Selling off Channel 4, which doesn’t cost the tax-payer a penny anyway, to what is likely to be a foreign company, is cultural vandalism. It will cost jobs and opportunities in the North and Yorkshire, and hit the wider British creative economy.

“This shows that the Conservatives have run out of ideas and run out of road. Of all the issues the public wants action on, the governance of Channel 4 isn’t one.”

No price tag has been set by the government yet, but reports suggest the channel could be sold for as much as £1 billion in a process that could take several months, with the proposals needing to pass through both the House of Commons and Lords.

The government has been consulting on plans to privatise the broadcaster following concerns for its survival in the streaming era.

Culture secretary Nadine Dorries said in a tweet that she wanted the broadcaster to remain a “cherished place in British life”, but felt that government ownership was “holding Channel 4 back from competing against streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon”.

She added: “I will seek to reinvest the proceeds of the sale into levelling up the creative sector, putting money into independent production and creative skills in priority parts of the country – delivering a creative dividend for all.”

Channel 4 chief executive Alex Mahon has previously questioned the “logic” behind such a move and whether privatising the broadcaster would help with efforts to “level up” outside of London.

In an internal email to staff on Monday, Mahon said her priority was to “look after all of you and the wonderful Channel 4 spirit” following the announcement.

A spokesperson for Channel 4 said: “With over 60,000 submissions to the government’s public consultation, it is disappointing that today’s announcement has been made without formally recognising the significant public interest concerns which have been raised.

“Channel 4 has engaged in good faith with the government throughout the consultation process, demonstrating how it can continue to commission much-loved programmes from the independent sector across the UK that represent and celebrate every aspect of British life as well as increase its contribution to society, while maintaining ownership by the public.

“Recently, Channel 4 presented DCMS (the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport) a real alternative to privatisation that would safeguard its future financial stability, allowing it to do significantly more for the British public, the creative industries and the economy, particularly outside London.

“This is particularly important given that the organisation is only two years into a significant commitment to drive up its impact in the UK’s nations and regions.”

The statement continued: “Channel 4 remains legally committed to its unique public service remit. The focus for the organisation will be on how we can ensure we deliver the remit to both our viewers and the British creative economy across the whole of the UK.

“The proposal to privatise Channel 4 will require a lengthy legislative process and political debate. We will of course continue to engage with DCMS, government and parliament, and do everything we can to ensure that Channel 4 continues to play its unique part in Britain’s creative ecology and national life.”
