Gossip, Gaffes And Guests – Nick Grimshaw On His 14 Years Behind The Radio 1 Mic

Nick Grimshaw hosting the Radio 1 Breakfast Show in 2013

“It’s quite weird when you’re looking through loads of stuff, I’ve never really stopped before and looked back to take stock of what I’ve done on Radio 1,” says a nostalgic Nick Grimshaw as we reflect on his incredible 14 years with the station.

Having joined the BBC in 2007 as Annie Mac’s sidekick on her Sunday night teen show Switch, Grimmy – as he’s affectionately known – has risen through the ranks to become one of Radio 1’s biggest stars.

He’s fronted the Weekend Breakfast Show (“I was 24 and I was going out a lot. Trying to get me to stay in on a Friday and Saturday night in 2008 was…. [laughs]”) and followed in the footsteps of the legendary John Peel as the host of Radio 1′s late-night new music show. Then in 2012, Grimmy landed the biggest break of his career when he was handed the keys to the Radio 1 Breakfast Show after its longest-serving presenter Chris Moyles stepped down.

“People really, really loved Chris, so it was very daunting to take over from him because he is a huge personality and so loved by people,” he says of his Breakfast predecessor.

“He had that thing that was attractive to me about Radio 1 in that it felt lawless and anything could happen on that show, so it definitely felt daunting to take over, but it also felt right. I felt confident that I could make a fun, inclusive, lawless show. I really like Radio 1 when it’s a bit live and loose and guests come in who are hungover.”

An “open-door” policy – as Grimmy describes it, adopted from his late-night show – meant that a day would rarely go by without one of his celebrity pals popping up to regale listeners with tales of their antics – Rita Ora was practically a regular (“I just love her… She’s one of those people who you meet at Radio 1 and you’re just like ‘you had to be a pop star, because I don’t think you’d survive if you weren’t a pop star’”), while Harry Styles once drunkenly co-hosted the show after he and Nick pulled an all-nighter at the Brits.

“I always just liked hearing the real lives of the DJs on Radio 1 when I was listening,” he says, explaining how his pals became so synonymous with his show. “I always liked how Sara Cox would talk about her night out or Chris Evans would talk about going down the pub – I liked that openness as a listener.”

After moving to the drivetime slot in 2018, the Oldham-born presenter is now hanging up his headphones for the last time on Thursday, as he says goodbye to the station he dreamed of being a presenter on “since he was a kid”.

Here, Grimmy reflects on the gossip, gaffes and guests from 14 years behind the mic…

The morning I got the Breakfast Show, I thought I was about to be fired

“I remember going in to meet my boss that morning and thought maybe he was going to change the nighttime show or fire me, I just didn’t think it was good news.

“When I got there, he said he wanted me to take over the Breakfast Show and it was a really surreal moment. It was a dream of mine as a kid, and for it to actually happen still feels surreal because it’s all I ever wanted to do.”

I always thought if you were up past 12 on Brits night, you might as well just stay out

“Everyone who works at Radio 1 is so passionate about it, the music and the Brit Awards, so to be able to go to that is so exciting. The adrenaline is through the roof and everyone is geeing each other up. We’d really go out, out.

“The first one was 2013 and we went out as a Breakfast Show team. You’ve got to get up at 5 but I always think it’s worse to go to bed. So we made the executive decision to just stay up. At about 2am, my producers decided to head into the office and have some sleep. I was like, ‘Really?! OK!’.

“I turned up after having a house party back at mine – there was me, Jaime Winston, Harry Styles and a cardboard cutout of Robbie Williams on air at 6.30am with a giant bottle of vodka that said ‘Grimmy’ in diamanté and no producers. We went on air and did the Breakfast Show and by the time the producers woke up, we’d been on air an hour.

“One poor guy, it was one of his first days as an assistant and he had to try and produce the Breakfast Show with all these drunk people chatting shit. The most stressful day ever for him.”

The guest who exceeded my expectations? Kim Kardashian.

“I didn’t really used to get the fascination. Yeah she’s pretty, but I never really got why she was the most famous person in the world. And then when I met her, she was so charming, so nice to everybody – and not fake nice – I just really liked her and really got her. Everyone in the studio loved her.

“I saw her in Ibiza a year later, and I never go over to a guest and am like, ‘Hi, I’ve interviewed you,’ but I saw her and she was like, ‘Hey, how are you? How’s the radio? I had so much fun that day!’

“She’d just got married and was gossing about the wedding. She was just dead normal and warm and a great story teller – really open and chatty.”

Rita Ora is the dream guest because she just chats and chats

“I only met her through radio. We just sort of really clicked when we started doing a lot of radio and telly together around the same time as me starting Breakfast.

“She’s so funny, scatty and charming and very sweet, and she’s like what she is on the radio off air.

“We used to do the Radio 1 Teen Awards together for a few years and we always used to want to go out on the Sunday night afterwards. But the problem was we’d have probably woken up at 6am that day to get there, so we’d always go out then we’d have a sleepover at mine because I lived right by Radio 1.  Then we’d go in on a Monday morning.

“I sit back now and I can’t imagine what that sounded like, me and her chatting absolute shit in the morning.”

My biggest gaffe saw me land a world exclusive and then press play on the wrong song

“I don’t remember doing this but someone tweeted me the other day, but I introduced the new James Bond song by Sam Smith and gave it a really big, amazing intro – it was a first play – but then I played the wrong song: Peanut Butter Jelly by Galantis. Everyone was like, ‘What the fuck is this?’ Not great.”

One thing listeners might not know about Radio 1 is that it has the strictest canteen

“You think it would be really fun and LOL, but actually the strictest canteen I’ve ever been in. I always get food during Newsbeat, and they’re always like, ‘Sorry, we’re not serving chips for another minute,’ and I’m like, ‘Could I have them now because the news is going to end?’ And then they are like, ‘Sorry, we don’t serve chips til 6’. It’s 5.58!

“It was a nightmare for Annie Mac every night, but it will be Clara’s problem now!”

Co-hosting with Annie is my favourite Radio 1 memory

“First our Sunday nights together and then getting to chat every single night on Drive.

“Annie told me a little while ago that she was thinking about [leaving]. She’s such a good planner and she knows where she’s going and what she wants. She told me in her garden and then I told her [I was leaving] a few weeks before I made my announcement.

“Annie is so safe and one of my best friends in the world and when I called her and told her, she is very measured and was like, ‘OK babe, let’s figure out how you want to do it and what you want to say’ – she’s exactly who you want to speak to for advice.”

Unlike her, I haven’t planned my last link yet

I’m not very good at planning things like that. I work best under last minute pressure, it’s the only way I can do things. So I’ll think about it the night before.

“It is a big deal, but I’m not dying. I want to say something poignant, but it is a funny one because people send you really nice messages and comments and it is a bit like you have died, you know what I mean?”

I definitely want to have a little break from radio

“I really love it but I didn’t want to leave and start another radio job straight away. I wanted some separation from it and some time to take stock of it. I’ve done a daily show for 12 years, and every day I wake up thinking, ‘What the fuck are we going to talk about today for four hours?’ So I just don’t want to do that for a little bit. I don’t want to stop doing the radio, I’d love to do it again in six months or a year.

“I want to try and commit to some things I’ve not had the time to commit to before and start building my interiors business and do some TV I’ve not been able to do.”

On stage at a Radio 1’s Big Weekend

There’s some great new Radio 1 talent I’m going to be following

I really love a new DJ called Sarah Story who is going to be on Friday nights. I heard her doing some cover and she was really lovely and funny and warm and northern, and has amazing taste in music. Then I met her at Annie’s leaving party and really clicked with her.

“I also really love Sian Eleri, who does The Chillest Show. It’s so good and she’s amazing. Both Sian and Sarah are really special.”

I’m not going to have to leave the What’sApp group. Am I?!

“Annie I speak to constantly and more off the radio than on the radio. Then we have a What’sApp group of me, Greg [James], Clara [Amfo], Scott [Mills] and Chris [Stark]. Everyone really does get on. I’m not going to have to leave the What’sApp group. Am I?!

“No, I don’t think so…”

Nick Grimshaw’s last Radio 1 show airs on Thursday from 2pm.

Piers Morgan Reveals He Caught Coronavirus Watching Euros Final At Wembley

Piers Morgan has revealed he thinks he caught coronavirus while watching England play in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley.

The journalist and television presenter told the Mail on Sunday he contracted Covid despite being double vaccinated.

In a post on Twitter, he said it has been “a long ten days”.

He added: “Yes, it’s certainly been one of the more interesting (and unnerving…) experiences of my life, but it gave my a new perspective on covid, vaccines & where we are.”

Writing in his column for the newspaper, Morgan said he thinks he caught the virus during England’s Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy.

“My confidence that the event would be ‘covid safe’ had disintegrated,” he said.

“It was turning into an unregulated free-for-all.”

According to the newspaper, he began to feel unwell two days after the match and subsequently tested positive for the virus.

“As I’m sure everyone who gets it feels, it’s a strange, disquieting moment to know I have this killer virus inside me,” he said.

The former Good Morning Britain presenter added that coronavirus is “definitely the roughest I’ve felt from any illness in my adult life”.

“I’m still here – unlike so many millions around the world who’ve lost their lives to Covid in this pandemic,” Morgan said.

“For that, I owe a heartfelt debt of thanks to the brilliant scientists up in Oxford who created the Astra-Zeneca vaccine with such astonishing speed.”

Cardi B Hits Back At Accusations Of Queerbaiting: ‘I Don’t Like This New Word’

Cardi B has hit back at accusations of “queerbaiting” in her latest music video.

The term is often used to describe straight performers who hint at non-heterosexual encounters, without actually depicting them, to attract LGBT fans.

A Rolling Stone article on the subject included a reference to Cardi B’s Wild Side video with singer Normani, noting a social media user had accused them of queerbaiting.

The video features the pair naked and dancing together.

The rapper, who is expecting her second child with husband Offset, said the term could pressure artists into divulging details about their private lives.

“I don’t like this new ‘queer baiting’ word,” she tweeted. “I feel like it pressure artist to talk about their sexuality or their experiences that they don’t feel comfortable speaking about.

“If a artist kiss a girl on a video does that means she gotta show videos & text wit wit other women?”

Addressing the Rolling Stone article, 28-year-old Cardi B said: “You do know we was trying to hide a whole baby bump right?”

She added: “Also I’m married to a man but I have express soo much about my bisexuality and my experiences wit girls. All of a sudden “queer baiting” is the new word & people use it to the ground!”

Queerbaiting is not a new subject in pop music.

Rita Ora was criticised in 2018 for her song Girls, which featured Cardi B, Charli XCX and Bebe Rexha.

Rita claims she intended the song to be a celebration of bisexuality but was accused of being exploitative.

She later released a statement apologising and said: “I would never intentionally cause harm to other LGBTQ+ people or anyone.”

Madonna was recently accused of queerbaiting over her famous kiss at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.

Mila Kunis Shut Down Husband Ashton Kutcher’s Attempt To Fly To Space

Mila Kunis was not over the moon with her husband’s plan to fly to space.

In an interview published earlier this week, Ashton Kutcher told website Cheddar News that he’d bought a ticket for billionaire Richard Branson’s next Virgin Galactic flight and was all set to rocket into space — until his wife talked him out of it, that is.

“When I got married and had kids, my wife basically encouraged that it was not a smart family decision to be heading into space when we have young children,” Ashton explained.

“So I ended up selling my ticket back to Virgin Galactic.”

Asthon became the 500th person to buy a Virgin Galactic space flight ticket back in March 2012, three years before he and miLA got married.

Richard Branson – who owns the space travel company – and five of his employees hurtled into space from New Mexico on Sunday.

The 70-year-old is the first person to blast off in his own spaceship, beating fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos and his company Blue Origin by nine days, the Associated Press reported.

The Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo space plane Unity and its mothership separate as they fly above Spaceport America, near Truth and Consequences, New Mexico, on Sunday.

Branson and the other passengers reached an altitude of about 53 miles over the New Mexico desert, allowing them to see the curvature of Earth and experience a few minutes of weightlessness before heading back down.

Virgin Galactic plans to do one more test flight before it begins flying paying customers, CNN reported. The company already has more than 600 potential space tourists with reservations, per AP.

Tickets initially cost $250,000 (around £182,000) each, but when the company reopens ticket sales soon, they’ll be even pricier.

“I was supposed to be on the next flight, but I will not be on the next flight,” Ashton told Cheddar.

Although Mika shut down her husband’s current dream (perhaps because she saw this bit on Late Night with Seth Meyers), he is still not giving up.

“At some point, I’m going to space,” he insisted.

Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean Says Last Heartbreaking Interaction He Had With Britney Spears ‘Wasn’t Her’

The Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean is speaking out in support of Britney Spears, slamming her conservatorship as “insane” and revealing the moment he last saw her that broke his heart.

In an interview this week with Andy Cohen on SiriusXM alongside fellow BSB member Nick Carter, AJ called the conservatorship that’s been controlling Britney’s life and finances since 2008 “asinine,” “insane” and “completely brutal.”

Britney recently spoke out on her own behalf for the first time since 2019, telling a court during a hearing last month that the conservatorship was doing her more harm than good and asked that it end.

During an emotional 20-minute speech, Britney explained how the conservatorship had such a grip on her life that her conservators wouldn’t allow her to remove her IUD so she could have a child with boyfriend Sam Asghari.

Addressing that specific issue, AJ says that “really irks him.”

“That, to me, is physical abuse. Just the whole thing to me is just, it’s grotesque. I pray for her. I really feel in my heart that she’s going to break free of all of this, and I really hope that she does. She’s a sweetheart,” he said, before adding that the pop sensation is “pretty much” his neighbour.

The 43-year-old went on to say that he sees Britney out and about often because they go to the same shopping centre in Los Angeles.

“There’s this amazing cupcake shop that she goes to that I go to,” he said. “The last time I saw her, it broke my heart. Last time I saw her, she was with a gentleman. I’m assuming it was security and/or maybe a driver.”

AJ explained that he was buying cupcakes for a birthday party for one of his daughter’s friends when he spotted Britney: “I went in, she was there, she looked right at me and I was like, ‘Hey, it’s AJ.’ And she just kind of had this glass face. Like, she just didn’t know who was there. It took her a minute. And then she realised it was me, and we hugged and we talked for a brief moment, but I could just see that this wasn’t her. Like, I’m not looking at the person I knew from years and years ago.”

He added that he doesn’t think the conservatorship is “fair” or “right,” and added: “Free Britney!”

Previously, AJ has been vocal about backing Britney and showing support for her on various forms of social media. On TikTok, AJ told fans, “This shit has gone on long enough! Let my girl live her life And be free to be who she is!”

England Team Receive Video Call From Tom Cruise – But Gareth Southgate Misses It For The Best Reason

Tom Cruise had a FaceTime call with the England team ahead their historic match at the Euro 2020 final, captain Harry Kane has revealed.

The Mission Impossible star wished the Three Lions good luck ahead of taking on Italy at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5Live, Harry revealed: “Obviously we have had ex-players and people get in touch.

“We actually had Tom Cruise get in touch yesterday evening, you get everyone who loves football.

“The majority of people in the world love football, so it’s great to have all that support not just in England but across the world, so it’s been a great time for all of us.

“We’ve enjoyed every moment of it so we’re just looking forward to hopefully finishing the job.”

Harry continued: “We were fortunate enough to have a watch of one of his films so I think he was over here in the UK and he just dialled in and FaceTimed us just to wish us the best as a group so that was nice of him.

“I’m not sure if he will be there at the final or not but football is such a big part of the world and it’s nice to have that support from all different types of businesses I guess.”

Manager Gareth Southgate missed out on the call, however, as he was too busy watching videos of the opposition ahead of the final.

The Independent quotes him as saying: “They had a preview of a film that’s due out further down the line and they had Tom dial in to speak to them which was, I would imagine, quite surreal.

“I was in a meeting watching videos of Italy but that’s another story.

“I think they all thoroughly enjoyed that experience and, yeah, they’ve had a good week, really. Ed Sheeran (who performed a private gig earlier in the tournament), Tom Cruise – the life of an England footballer.”

Gary Lineker Issues Plea To England Fans Ahead Of Euro 2020 Final

Gary Lineker has begged England fans not to boo the Italian national anthem during Sunday’s Euro 2020 final.

England fans at Wembley came in for criticism after the team’s historic 2-1 win against Denmark during Wednesday’s semi final, when they booed the Danish anthem.

The Match Of The Day host has now pleaded with those who are attending Sunday’s game not to repeat the scenes of earlier in the week.

Gary Lineker

In a post on Twitter, he wrote: “If you’re lucky enough to get a ticket for the final, please, please don’t boo the Italian anthem.”

He explained: “A/ It’s an absolute belter and worth listening to. B/ It’s bloody rude, disrespectful and utterly classless.”

UEFA charged England over the boos in the stadium on Wednesday, while disciplinary proceedings were opened over England fans letting off flares inside the venue.

England were also charged after a laser was shown in Denmark’s goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel’s eyes before Kane struck his spot-kick.

According to Eurosport, the Three Lions are likely to be hit with fines for the offences.

Meanwhile David Beckham, Adele and Dua Lipa were among the famous faces celebrating England’s historic win on Wednesday.

Gareth Southgate’s men will play Italy on Sunday – England’s first major international final since the 1966 World Cup.

David And Victoria Beckham Celebrate 22nd Wedding Anniversary By Sharing Glorious Matchy-Matchy Throwback Pics

David Beckham has shown just what a perfect match him and wife Victoria are on their 22nd wedding anniversary.

The former footballer has shared a series of pics with Victoria and they all have one thing in common: matchy-matchy outfits.

Well, they’ve always had a bit of a thing for coordinating their wardrobe, but we still can’t get on board with those matching purple wedding outfits (sorry guys).

David shared the collection of throwback snaps on Instagram on Sunday, which he captioned: “22 years later, still matching outfits. Happy anniversary love u so much and thank you for giving me our amazing kids so we can all wear the same.”

The final pic sees the happy couple posing with their four children, Brooklyn, 22, Romeo, 18, Cruz, 16, and Harper, nine, in their PJs – all matching, of course.

Victoria was also feeling nostalgic on her Instagram page, where she shared a video montage of her and David looking seriously loved-up throughout the years.

She captioned the montage, “I love you David” with a pink hearts emoji, and finished with “Happy Anniversary”.

David and Victoria first met in 1997 at a football match, and were engaged a year later. They tied the knot four months later in a lavish ceremony at Luttrellstown Castle, just outside Dublin.
