Natalie Portman Addresses ‘Expectations’ At Cannes As Women Buck Unspoken Dress Code

Natalie Portman is addressing the unspoken rules that women face in society — and at one event in particular.

On Saturday, the Oscar winner talked about her new film May December during the Cannes Film Festival, noting that the movie’s theme of “performing femininity” was relevant to the French event itself.

“Performing femininity is … something I’m definitely very curious about,” she said at a press conference for the film. “The different ways that we as women are expected to behave — at this festival, even — compared to men. How we’re supposed to look, how we’re supposed to carry ourselves.”

She added: “The expectations are different on you all the time, and it affects how you behave. Whether you’re buying into it or whether you’re rejecting it or whether you’re doing something in between, you’re definitely defined by the social strictures upon you.”

According to Portman, the “different roles we play in different environments” are of special interest to director Todd Haynes, whose film Carol similarly touched on that idea in 2015.

Natalie Portman said the theme of her new film was relevant to the Cannes Film Festival and its expectations for women.

Ironically, multiple women were reportedly denied entry to the Cannes premiere of Carol that year because they didn’t wear high-heeled shoes. Filmmaker Asif Kapadia, for example, said that his wife had been briefly turned away.

“I think everyone should wear flats, to be honest,” actor Emily Blunt said in response to the news at the time, calling it “very disappointing”.

In the years following the Carol premiere, some festival attendees began to push back on event’s apparent expectations for women. Julia Roberts famously walked Cannes’ red carpet barefoot in 2016, while Kristen Stewart publicly ditched her Christian Louboutin heels in 2018.

Portman made her comments this weekend as Cate Blanchett appeared at the festival barefoot and Jennifer Lawrence walked the red carpet in flip-flops.

Speaking alongside Portman, May December co-star Julianne Moore offered her own thoughts on the gender divide.

“Women are not a minority group. We’re 50% of the global population. So it’s important to be treated as such,” Moore said.

Nick Jonas Describes The Public Mishap That Led Him To Seek Therapy

Nick Jonas said this week that a botched guitar solo at the 2016 Academy of Country Music Awards led him to see a therapist.

The youngest member of the pop sibling trio the Jonas Brothers discussed stage anxiety on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast Monday, recalling what he called the “tragic guitar solo debacle”.

Jonas was backing up Kelsea Ballerini on her song Peter Pan and he’d rehearsed, he said, for what seemed like a “million times”. He said was “feeling really confident about it.”

“I started off, it’s fine, and as I walked towards her, I just went completely blank and I hit a wrong note and blacked out, basically, and clocked that it was wrong and I couldn’t stop,” the “Jealous” singer said.

Jonas took a ribbing on social media and tried to shrug off the mishap as a “brain fart”. But the effects were long-lasting.

“In retrospect, I can kind of laugh about how big I thought it was. But it did travel more than I wish it would’ve, and it did cause me to go into therapy,” he said.

“To this day and [after] hours of unpacking it, I can’t really figure out exactly what happened, but I was rushed right into a car and right to a plane after it.

“And I looked at my manager, I was like, ‘I think that was bad’. I was in shock, kind of. And then it was like a really traumatic moment that shaped the pressure I put on myself to be perfect and to always be ‘on.’”

Jonas recalled other mishaps, like forgetting lyrics when he performed on Broadway in Annie Get Your Gun as a boy, but he called the CMA blunder “the worst moment”.

Julia Fox Rocks A Completely See-Through Glass Top At Cannes

Leave it to Julia Fox to turn France’s Cannes Film Festival into a veritable runway for her bold ― and unconventional ― sense of style.

Amid the annual event, the “Uncut Gems” actor attended a party Sunday night in a flowing white skirt with a billowing train. Her structured bodice was made of a glasslike material that was completely see-through.

Fox completed the daring look with diamond jewelry from the brand Marli New York. (NSFW images below.)

This isn’t the first time that Fox has rocked a sheer look. In March, she wore a black mesh dress while sitting front row at Courrèges’ fall-winter 2023 show during Paris Fashion Week.

And earlier this month, she was photographed in Los Angeles wearing a white miniskirt with a see-through tube top covered in condoms.

Of course, Fox is one of many celebrities who have brought their fashion A-game to Cannes this year. Natalie Portman and Viola Davis were among those who also rocked some impressive looks at the film festival in southern France.

Speaking to People last year, Fox said she was providing fans and media outlets “a visual service” with her outré ensembles.

“Sometimes the paparazzi get me, and I look like [shit]. … If they’re gonna get me, I might as well make the best of it,” she explained, adding that the point is “not caring about whether society thinks it’s normal”.

“If I think it’s cool, then it’s cool,” she added.

Jennifer Lawrence Shrugs Off Cannes’ Unofficial Dress Code With Choice Of Footwear

Jennifer Lawrence knows how to command Cannes ― in flip-flops, no less.

The actor appeared at the Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of Anatomy of a Fall on Sunday, dressed in a red, crepe silk gown by Dior Haute Couture, paired with an Archi Dior necklace made of white gold and diamonds.

Lawrence, who was dressed by stylist Jamie Mizrahi, didn’t walk the official red carpet in sandals.

But, as seen in photos of the event, the actor did wear black flip-flops by The Row at one point on the carpet, Mizrahi confirmed to HuffPost through her agent on Monday.

Who could blame Lawrence for wearing sandals on these steep-looking steps?

It was a bold choice, since Cannes famously, and contentiously, encourages women to wear heels on its red carpet. In 2015, a number of women were reportedly turned away from attending a premiere of Carol because they were wearing flats.

HuffPost reached out to the Cannes Film Festival to clarify its current dress code policy.

Lawrence’s decision to wear sandals brings to mind Kristen Stewart’s 2018 appearance at the festival. The Spencer star posed for photographers on the red carpet in Christian Louboutin stilettos, which she then removed to walk the rest of the carpet barefoot.

Two years earlier, Stewart had spoken out about the festival’s implied expectation that women wear heels.

“If [a man and I] were walking the red carpet together and someone stopped me and said, ‘Excuse me, young lady, you’re not wearing heels. You cannot come in,’ then [I’m going to say], ‘Neither is my friend. Does he have to wear heels?’” Stewart said in 2016, according to Vanity Fair.

“It can work both ways,” she added. “It’s just like you simply cannot ask me to do something that you are not asking him. I get the black-tie thing but you should be able to do either version — flats or heels.”

Punisher And Thor Actor Ray Stevenson Dies Aged 58

Actor Ray Stevenson – known for films including King Arthur and Punisher – has died at the age of 58, his representatives have confirmed.

The Northern Irish actor died on Sunday, though no further details were immediately made available.

Stevenson also starred in multiple television shows including as soldier Titus Pullo in the BBC/HBO series Rome from 2005-2007, as well as a spin-off series for the Star Wars franchise.

He starred as Porthos in the 2011 film The Three Musketeers – alongside Luke Evans, Matthew Macfadyen and Milla Jovovich – and was in Divergent with Kate Winslet and Zoe Kravitz in 2014.

More recently, he appeared as the villainous Governor Scott Buxton in the 2022 Oscar-winning Bollywood film RRR.

Stevenson began his career appearing on TV shows in the 1990s then landed action roles in Hollywood films starting in the 2000s.

His first major role came in Antoine Fuqua’s 2004’s movie King Arthur, alongside Clive Owen, Ray Winstone and Keira Knightley.

The actor played Dagonet, one of the knights of the Round Table.

In 2008, Stevenson landed the lead role in Marvel’s Punisher: War Zone, where he played the titular character and his alias Frank Castle – becoming the third actor to do so onscreen.

He later appeared in other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Asgardian warrior Volstagg in Thor, Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok.

Stevenson also held various roles in the Star Wars universe, lending his voice to Disney’s popular Mandalorian series.

At the 2023 Star Wars celebration in London, it was announced he would appear in the upcoming Ahsoka series.

Following news of his death the Peter Mayhew Foundation, set up by the actor who played Chewbacca in the Star Wars films, tweeted: “We are sad to hear of the passing of Ray Stevenson.

“You may recognise Ray as Baylon Skoll from the upcoming Ahsoka show on Disney+.

“You may also remember his work as the voice of Mandalorian super commando Gar Saxon in The Clone Wars. Our sincerest condolences to his family.”

Actor James Purefoy, who portrayed Mark Antony in Rome, tweeted: “So sad to hear the news that Ray Stevenson, our Pullo in Rome, has passed away. A brilliant, gutsy, larger-than-life actor who filled every part he played right up to the brim. My thoughts are with his family, his lovely wife Betta and their beautiful kids. What a loss.”

Rihanna is sharing some of the most intimate moments from pregnancy with her son.

The Umbrella singer posted a series of maternity photos Thursday to celebrate her son, RZA Athelston Mayers, who has since celebrated his first birthday. Dressed in nothing but high heels, underwear and jewelry, Rihanna didn’t need an umbrella — and was shaded by palm trees.

The seven-photo Instagram carousel showed Rihanna posing with a mysterious book while cupping her breasts; she stood on a balcony near an unspecified ocean — and captioned the series “Rub on ya titties”.

“In honour of my first pregnancy, embracing motherhood like a g, and the magic that this body made!” Rihanna captioned the Instagram post. “Baby RZA… he in there not having a clue how nuts his mama is, or how obsessed he was bout to make me”.

Social media sleuths have surely noticed the post contained only seven images — and that Instagram allows for up to 10 photos in their carousels. Currently pregnant with her second child, Rihanna notably concluded Thursday’s caption with “#tobecontinued”.

Many of her whopping 150 million followers commented on the post, with Pharoahe Monch perhaps most notable. The rapper practically coined the phrase “rub on ya titties” with the chorus of his 1999 song Simon Says — and wrote it out in the comments for her.

Rihanna famously announced her second pregnancy during the Super Bowl this year.

Rihanna received further praise from Wu-Tang Clan rapper GZA, whose fellow group member RZA inspired the name of Rihanna’s son. Kathy Hilton, the mother of socialite Paris Hilton, left red heart emojis behind — while rapper Bia called Rihanna “the most beautiful”.

Rihanna, who celebrated RZA’s first birthday with partner A$AP Rocky on Instagram last week, famously became the first artist to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show while pregnant — in a historic reveal that served as an announcement of her second pregnancy.

The ambitious fashion magnate, who became the richest woman in music in 2021 and the youngest self-made female billionaire in 2022, is mainly focused on her family these days. In March, she told British Vogue that motherhood is “everything”.

“You really don’t remember life before, that’s the craziest thing ever,” she told the outlet. “You literally try to remember it — and there are photos of my life before — but the feeling, the desires…everything, you just don’t identify with it because…it doesn’t matter.”

The ten most annoying phrase in the English language have been revealed – at lest according to an admittedly “unscientific” survey by Countdown star Susie Dent.

The wordsmith and resident of Dictionary Corner polled her 1.1million Twitter followers on what they thought should be “banished from the dictionary” – as she suggested “it is what it is”, “going forward”, “with all due respect” and “aw bless” were in the running.

The suggestions came thick and fast, including one from actor Hugh Bonneville:

As she revealed the top 10, Dent said antipathy to many of the phrases was long-standing.

She tweeted: “Happily, English is a democracy so it’s up to us.

“And many of these are old beefs: ‘like’ as a filler was first used in 1778.”

She told the BBC the first reference in the Oxford English Dictionary to the word “gonna” was in 1806.

Sylvester Stallone Shows Al Pacino How To Take A Selfie And We Can’t Even

Sylvester Stallone shows fellow Hollywood icon Al Pacino how to take a selfie in a new video clip that should reassure Luddites young and old. (Watch it below.)

In a preview of the reality show The Family Stallone, which premiered Wednesday on Paramount+, the two eat pizza and catch up.

Pacino mentions to Stallone that he’s seen his daughters’ podcast, prompting the Rocky star to remark that Pacino is more “tech savvy” than he is.

“Well, I can text. I haven’t been able to take a photo yet,” the Oscar-winning Pacino replies. “My son [Anton] keeps telling me, ‘Send me stuff, Dad. Send me stuff.’ I said, ‘I’ll ask Sly.’”

Stallone calls him a liar as he pulls out his phone and tells the Godfather legend: “This is how it works, see.” Stallone appears to take a photo or two.

The conversation meanders from their gray hair to Stallone, 76, noting that Pacino, 83, is now on The Family Stallone reality show.

“Everything happens if you stay alive,” Pacino said.

Salma Hayek knows how to cut loose, and the Living it Up actor did just that to celebrate an impressive new milestone on Instagram.

On Tuesday, the star shared a video of herself joyfully dancing in a robe with her glam team to commemorate reaching 24 million followers on the platform.

After her robe slipped down, revealing some NSFW lady bits — tastefully blurred in the video — an unfazed Hayek continued showcasing her moves as her friends reveled in the background.

“24 million followers, 24 million reasons to smile. Thank you all for joining me on this wild ride!” she wrote in the caption of the merry clip.

“I cannot contain my excitement & gratitude,” the Magic Mike’s Last Dance star added, alongside a dancing emoji.

Hayek, who has been married to husband François-Henri Pinault since 2009, hasn’t been shy about showing off her physique with stunning snaps on social media.

Last month, the actor wowed fans in a neon green bikini, stylishly flipping her hair back as she emerged from the ocean.

Hayek confessed to People in 2020 that her figure doesn’t come from spending long hours in the gym. She said she doesn’t “have time to exercise” with work days of 16 hours or more.

“I work with a woman in London who taught me how to hold my body in a way where the muscles are activated all day long,” she explained, revealing how she manages to stay so fit. “So even when you brush your teeth, you’re working the muscles.”

Hayek added: “She taught me to tone [my muscles] without clenching them. You relax them and focus on the parts that need to be used, but never with tension. If you’re aware of your body, you’d be surprised by the effect it can have.”

Helen Mirren was the coolest thing on the red carpet on the opening night of the Cannes Film Festival in France.

On Tuesday, the star of 2006′s The Queen turned heads with a striking hair transformation, arriving at the event with a wispy, ocean blue coif that perfectly matched her Del Core dress.

Mirren’s gown fell off her shoulders into a deep V with long sleeves, a corseted bodice and long train. Diamonds, soft makeup and a pale blue manicure tied the look together.

As cameras flashed, she showed off one last accessory: a handheld fan with the text #WorthIt, a reference to her partnership with L’Oréal Paris. Altogether, the ensemble created an edgy yet elegant look that was perfect for the film festival.

Mirren hasn’t shied away from showing off her tresses in the past. In March, she wore her long gray locks down at the Los Angeles premiere of Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

Days before the California event, the 77-year-old star dismissed an all-too-common notion in society — that “you’re not supposed to have longer hair after a certain age”.

“During Covid, I started growing my hair, and I hadn’t actually had long hair since I was in my 20s,” she said during an appearance on the British morning show Lorraine.

“It grew and grew and grew, and I couldn’t be bothered to cut it, basically. And then I thought: You know what? It’s pretty cool. I think I’ll stick with it for a little while,” Mirren added. “It will come off eventually, but I’m kind of enjoying it. It’s quite radical.”
