Age Ratings For Films With Sex Scenes And Nudity To Be Raised

Films that feature sex scenes and nudity are due to have age ratings tightened to align with changing public opinion.

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) said that the guidelines for films rated 12A or 12 will be stricter going forward. It comes after the board surveyed 12,000 people as part of its largest-ever public consultation.

“People are calling for a more cautious approach to classifying sex scenes at the border of 12A/12 and 15,” the BBFC shared on its website. Participants were concerned by “the level of sexual detail, nudity and the duration of the sex scenes rated 12A/12” under the guidelines of previous research in 2019. Similar content is now more likely to be rated as a 15.

The board also said higher ratings might be necessary for films that include language with sexual or misogynistic connotations, like “son of a bitch”, “bitch” or “dick”. “The worry is that young viewers may hear and repeat such language. Language such as this may now require a higher age rating,” the BBFC shared.

A total of 33 full-length feature films, 28 trailers and 151 clips from films and TV of varying genres were shown as part of the research.

However, findings did indicate that audiences were happy for classification to be “more lenient towards some sex references at the 15/18 borderline, especially in comic contexts”.

The research also revealed that people are now “slightly more accepting of cannabis misuse” at the 12A/12 rating, so long as it is “not detailed, glamorised or frequent”.

Additionally, respondents were found to be more comfortable with a relaxing of standards in 12A/12 trailers, meaning some may now include an “isolated use of strong language”.

BBFC president Natasha Kaplinsky said in a statement: “At the BBFC, we’re dedicated to ensuring what we do is responsive to the ever-evolving world around us. Since we last asked people across the country what they thought about our standards, society has changed, and opinions have followed – it’s fascinating how this vast body of new research reflects this.

“This is the first Classification Guidelines update I have overseen as President. Not only am I proud and thrilled to launch these findings, but as someone who has always looked to the BBFC for guidance for myself and my family, seeing first-hand the level of dedication and insight that went into this process has been eye-opening and inspiring. Without a doubt, we are truly shaped by you.

People Are Just Realising What Coyote Ugly Was Actually Based On

What do the Julia Roberts 2010 flick “Eat, Pray, Love” and the cult classic Coyote Ugly, released a decade before it, have in common? It’s not the vibes, it’s definitely not the soundtracks, it’s actually author Elizabeth Gilbert.

Elizabeth Gilbert, author of bestselling books such as Eat Pray Love and Big Magic is actually at least partly responsible for the big magic of Coyote Ugly.

That’s right, while the two might seem worlds apart, Elizabeth Gilbert was actually a bartender at the original Coyote Ugly bar in the East Village, NYC.

While in a Facebook post the writer said that she was “dancing on the bar and everything” at the time, she tended to opt for sensible shoes and long tops which isn’t quite the vibe we know and love.

How did Elizabeth Gilbert inspire the Coyote Ugly movie?

This has come to light following a TikTok creator called Alwyn Hamilton highlighting that the two films are related and, in fact, the protagonist in each movie is actually the same person, though they might seem lightyears apart in attitude and demeanour.

So, the bar-dancing, hip-swinging woman we saw in Coyote Ugly goes on to become the soul-searching, earth-wandering woman in Eat, Pray, Love.

The two stories were based on Elizabeth’s experiences. The Coyote Ugly days of her life were detailed in an essay written for GQ in 1997 called, ‘The Muse of the Coyote Ugly saloon’ and of course, Eat, Pray, Love is a memoir of Elizabeth’s breakdown and recovery and was published in 2006.

It might not be the most obvious double-bill but the two films give an insightful glimpse into the writer’s incredible life over two decades.

Jennifer Lawrence Reveals Which Popular Movie She Was ‘Immediately’ Rejected From

Jennifer Lawrence rose to fame as Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games film franchise, but her career could have taken a different path had she landed one big audition.

The Oscar winner recently revealed during an appearance on Spotify’s The Rewatchables”= podcast that she had auditioned for a role in Twilight.

“I auditioned for Twilight,” she said in the interview earlier this month. “They turned me down immediately. I didn’t even get a callback. But my life would’ve been totally different. I got Hunger Games, I think, like, a year later.”

But Lawrence said she almost didn’t accept the offer to play Katniss after witnessing the level of “fandom” surrounding the Twilight movies and its stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

The first Twilight film premiered in 2008, and the final installment, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2, was released in 2012. The first Hunger Games movie premiered in 2012.

“I almost didn’t do Hunger Games because Twilight had come out and that fandom had happened,” she said, adding that she was concerned that Hunger Games would bring a similar “level of fame.”

“I just assumed it was going to be like Twilight— the Twilight level of fame, and that was just never something I had in mind,” she said. “I wanted to do indies, I wanted to do good films, but I didn’t want to be the most famous person on the planet. That’s a very different life than what I pictured for myself.”

Lawrence added that she would have been “miserable” had she endured the media frenzy and tabloid fodder the Twilight actors dealt with while making the vampire film saga.

Clearly, Lawrence’s casting in The Hunger Games film franchise was meant to be.

The No Hard Feelings actor told Variety in an article published earlier this month that she would “totally” return to the film franchise if given an opportunity.

“If Katniss ever could ever come back into my life, 100 percent,” she said.

Lawrence starred in all four Hunger Games installments from 2012 to 2015. She will not appear in an upcoming sequel for the franchise, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
