People Are Just Realising What The Spiky Side Of The Grater Is For, And I Never Knew

I don’t think I could go a week without using my grater. But by “using my grater,” I mean what most of us mean: using the one, coarse grating side that’s perfect for shredding Cheddar.

When I’m making a dressing or baking, the finer testing side does get some use. But the flat, wide, slicing side of my box grater has never been used ― and as for the spiky side, I won’t even touch it for fear of losing a knuckle.

If Reddit’s r/Cooking is anything to go by, it looks like I’m not alone.

Site user u/Hansekins recently posted to the forum asking “What is the fourth side of a box grater for?”

“The one that makes it impossible to hand wash the thing without drawing blood. The side that’s just covered with sharp pointy spikes that do… what, exactly?” they wanted to know.

What DOES it do?

The top comment on the post reads that it’s for “Grating parmesan, ginger, horseradish, garlic… Basically anything you want more of a paste or powder as opposed to shreds.”

But the commenter added that they “usually just end up using the small grater or a microplane for that stuff anyway.”

“You can also grate tomatoes for juice there if you don’t have a food processor,” another Redditor wrote, sharing that it can help to pulverise garlic too.

Others shared that it doubles as a nutmeg grater, which is true (though I’ve never escaped a nutmeg grating unscathed).

Many more people agreed with the hard cheese theory, to which I say, “fear not the Parmesan shard but instead the mangled hand.”

Chef Nathan Lyon confirmed on YouTube that it was historically meant for grating aged cheeses “into a fluffy powder-like substance; the kind that you’d get at the grocery store.”

Still, I’m with commenter jason_abacabb, who wrote: “I believe it exists just to rip my sponge to pieces.”

Turns out it has a name

The side is officially called a “star grater” (ironic, given that it’s usually the last cast member on the billing).

Its raspy texture, which food site The Kitchn describes as “Medieval,” can also be used for coconut, cinnamon, and chocolate.

It CAN. But if you ask us, we haven’t seen convincing enough evidence to prove it SHOULD….

Nightmare Before Christmas’ Director Has Settled The Debate Of Whether It Is A Halloween Film

If you’re from a certain generation, you’ve likely spent the final months of the year in an ongoing debate about whether the 1993 flick The Nightmare Before Christmas counts as a Halloween or Christmas film.

No, you can’t say both.

Unlike most silly debates, there are two healthy points of view here — the film is exploring the themes of Christmas and what it means to families and communties.

However, crucially… It’s set in a place called Halloween Town which is inhabited by traditionally scary creatures that count down to Halloween every year.

However, the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas weighed in on this debate and I’m sorry to all the Christmas fans but you might be disappointed…

If you’ve ever found yourself embroiled in this debate, we have exactly the bit of trivia you need.

When the director was asked whether he considers it to be a Christmas or Halloween film at a 2015 Q&A at Colorado’s Telluride Horror Show film festival, he said: “Oh, boy, it’s a Halloween movie.”

So that’s that. We can debate over other things this festive season, like whether Love Actually is good, actually.

While we’re on the topic of The Nightmare Before Christmas…

It was Henry Sellick that directed the film and not Tim Burton, as many people believe. Tim wrote the story but the direction was all down to Henry, who also directed Coraline.

Speaking about this common misconception in 2022, Henry said: ”[It] was a little unfair because it wasn’t called Tim Burton’s [The Nightmare Before Christmas] until three weeks before the film came out.

“And I would have been fine with that, if that’s what I signed up for. But Tim was in LA making two features while I directed that film.”

Let’s consider the record straight: it’s a Halloween film, directed by Henry Sellick.

GBBO’s Cornucopia Showstoppers Have A Kaos-Worthy History

After last week’s falls, frights, and quittings, you’d think the Great British Bake-Off had had its fill of Kaos.

But it turns out this week’s showstoppers, mouth-watering cornucopia, have a history that’d fit right into the Greek mythology-based Netflix hit.

Also known as a “horn of plenty,” cornucopias symbolise abundance.

They date back to Ancient Greece and originally consisted of a goat’s horn filled with fruits and grain ― and were supposedly once used to conceal a very important guest.

What’s the myth behind cornucopias?

According to Dictionary.com, a Roman retelling of the Greek legends from Ovid says that Hercules wrestled the horn from a river god called Achelous. Nymphs then turned it into a horn of plenty, always brimming with food.

One of those nymphs, Amalthaea, fed her foster child Zeus (Jeff Goldblum to fans of the Netflix show) food from the cornucopia in some Greek myths while he was hiding from his father, Brittanica’s online encyclopedia shared.

A Greek legend goes on to say that Zeus went on to place the horn of plenty along with the rest of the goat among the stars, the encyclopedia adds.

The motif stuck around, becoming part of Ancient Roman myths and even appearing in a 1630 Rubens painting of the goddess Abuntia who was associated with the horn.

Its image is so enduring that we recognise it today, featuring it in movies like The Hunger Games and, apparently, attempting to recreate it in flour on the telly.

And we put it in our Fruit Of The Loom T-shirts! Right?

Some people think they remember seeing the produce-filled horn on the cartoon fruit-bearing label of Fruit Of The Loom T-shirts when they were younger.

I’m one of them, but according to the company, we’re wrong ― the company shared on X that “The Mandela Effect is real, the cornucopia in our logo is not.”

Sounds like something a regretful Zeus would make the brand say after an overzealous Earhtly marketing campaign, but okay…

So THAT’S How The Celebs For Strictly Come Dancing Are Chosen

We all love a bit of Strictly, don’t we?

In the final months of the year, we cosy up in front of the TV with a cuppa and for a couple of hours, we’re suddenly dance experts, choreographers, the Best of the Biz when it comes to dancing.

However, our real expertise comes into play before the show is even back on air. The second that the Strictly contestants are announced, the real judges are us: “Who is that guy?” “Wait, wasn’t he in an advert or something?” “How is she a celebrity?”.

We know better than not just the dancers but the casting directors, too. We reckon we either don’t know people or they’re long-since washed up celebs.

However, Richard Osman pointed out on his podcast with Marina Hyde, The Rest Is Entertainment, that actually, Strictly is often the making of celebs and our assumptions about them is often wrong.

He said: “A large proportion of the biggest stars on British TV come from reality shows. Strictly has been the absolute making of them. I mean the wonderful late Caroline Flack absolutely went from minor TV presenter to presenting the X Factor and Love Island because she won Strictly.

″[As an agent] if you have a client who is on the cusp of becoming huge, and they have a personality that people like watching on television, then doing something like Strictly… it’s almost impossible to think of a better show.”

Talent executive at Strictly revealed details behind choosing contestants

Speaking on the Strictly Confidential podcast in 2018, the show’s talent executive Stefania Aleksander revealed that the process is actually quite complicated, saying: “You come up with ideas for the cast of Strictly, present them to the executives and commissioners, and together decide who we want to go for.

“The list is endless. We approach people that we really want to go after and we’d love to see on the show and then we meet them to have a chat about the show, and the commitment, and find out how much they want to learn to dance. Then we present that to the channel between us – it’s a long process.”

…Maybe we need to be a little less judgemental.

This Iconic (And Ridiculous!) Friends Scene Was Actually Based On Real Life

Every Friends fanatic loves The One Where No One’s Ready.

Almost entirely taking place in Monica’s apartment, the episode follows the gang as they try to get ready for a fancy dinner at Ross’ work, with various obstacles stopping them from doing so. In fact, it’s so popular that Rolling Stone placed it at number 3 in their top 50 rankings of Friends episodes.

The episode is filled with iconic moments, from Monica obsessing over a voicemail left by her ex-boyfriend Richard to Joey and Chandler battling over a chair (and the cushions on it).

However, the scene everyone really remembers comes when Joey pays Chandler back for stealing all of his underwear by putting on every single item in his roommate’s wardrobe, and caps it all off by performing some lunges.

But what you might not realise is that the scene was inspired by a moment from the writers’ personal lives.

Speaking to Vulture in 2019, Friends producer Greg Malins recalled hearing a story about his friend coming home to find his roommate wearing all of his clothes.

Apparently, said friend had put all of his clothes into a plastic bag and his roommate had decided to, uh, pleasantly surprise him by emptying the entire contents and sporting them himself.

Even the roomate’s declaration of “look! I’m wearing all your clothes!” would eventually be adapted into the Friends script.

Meanwhile, The Guardian also published its own piece about the history of Friends this week, which revealed that the famous scene with Ross’ leather trousers was also based on a real-life event.

Writer Adam Chase said: “I was talked into buying an inordinately expensive pair, which I proceeded to never wear.”

The rest, as we know, went on to become Friends history.

You’d be forgiven — especially if you haven’t seen the film before — for thinking that Beetlejuice was the main character in Tim Burton’s classic movie. He’s the title character, he’s all over the promotional materials, you can’t get away from him.

However, the character actually spends very little time on-screen – and his famous pinstripe suit is even rarer throughout the film, clocking in at just two minutes.

Speaking with Variety, writers and producers Miles Millar and Alfred Gough revealed that in the original Beetlejuice film, their chaotic character only had 17 minutes of screentime, and the recently-released sequel kept this sparing approach to the character.

Miles said: “He’s such a fun character to write, but … he’s not the protagonist of the movie.

“It was tricky in terms of keeping the right balance. People love him so much. It’s called ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ for a reason, so he needs to be essential to the movie.”

If you’re not familiar with the character, Beetlejuice is a crude, hilarious and obnoxious character that creates chaos and pulls tricks whenever he’s around.
