Boris Johnson Is ‘Generally An Honest Man’, Says Close Ally

Boris Johnson is “generally an honest man”, one of his close allies has insisted.

Chris Heaton-Harris, the Northern Ireland secretary, tried to mount a defence of the former prime minister as the partygate scandal returned to haunt the Tories.

The cross-party privileges committee published a report on Friday saying Johnson may have repeatedly misled parliament over what he knew about lockdown-busting parties in Downing Street during the pandemic.

But despite its damning findings, the ex-PM insisted that he has been “vindicated” by the report.

On the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show this morning, Heaton-Harris – who was chief whip when Johnson was in Number 10 – said he believed the former Tory leader had now “knowingly” misled MPs.

He said: “There are four occasions where Boris may have done that.

“I wouldn’t have become Boris’s chief whip if I didn’t believe him that he did not knowingly mislead parliament and I believe him to be an honest man – he did not knowingly mislead parliament.”

Heaton-Harris added: “He gave me chapter and verse that demonstrated to me that he did not knowingly mislead parliament.

“Generally he is an honest man and I truly believe that.”

The cabinet minister had earlier told Sky News that he was “absolutely convinced” Johnson had not misled MPs.

The former prime minister is set to give evidence to the privileges committee later this month.

If he is found guilty of misleading parliament, he could be suspended from the Commons and potentially lose his seat.

New Law Just One Part Of Action To ‘Stop The Boats’, Says Minister

New legislation pledged by Rishi Sunak to tackle illegal migration will form only one part of the government’s response to the issue, a senior minister has said.

It comes as Home Secretary Suella Braverman is set to publish long-promised legislation as soon as Tuesday that would make asylum claims inadmissible from those who travel to the UK on small boats.

Sunak on Sunday vowed to put an end to “immoral” illegal migration, while Braverman said “enough is enough”.

But while details are still scarce on the legislation, critics have already questioned whether the government’s solution will make any difference to small boat arrivals on Britain’s shores.

The legislation would see a duty placed on the Home Secretary to remove “as soon as reasonably practicable” anyone who arrives on a small boat, either to Rwanda or a “safe third country”.

Arrivals will also be prevented from claiming asylum while in the UK, with plans also to ban them from returning once removed.

During an appearance on BBC One’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg, Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris was shown a graph displaying a fall in asylum seeker returns since 2010 as he insisted that legislation is just one aspect of the Government’s “arsenal” on the issue.

“We need a full range of things in our arsenal to try and stop both people trafficking and illegal migration across the Channel,” he said.

“That involves proper conversations, that are ongoing, with our French counterparts, and indeed other European counterparts, to try and ensure that people are held in the first safe country that they come to. That also includes international development aid.”

He insisted a tightening of the law is required “because the law has been challenged on pretty much all those occasions and equally when we announced the Rwanda scheme, it was challenged immediately”.

The Prime Minister, who has made “stopping the boats” one of his five priorities, told the Mail on Sunday that he is “determined to deliver” on his promise.

But the Government’s plans have been criticised by campaigners, with concerns too about whether some of the policies are compatible with the European Convention on Human Rights.

The Rwanda scheme has been mired in legal challenges, and so far no flights carrying migrants to the Rwandan capital Kigali have departed.

The latest Home Office figures show 2,950 migrants have crossed the Channel already this year.

Heaton-Harris, speaking to Sophy Ridge On Sunday on Sky News, signalled that the Government may look at opening more “safe and legal routes” for asylum seekers in the future.

“I’m quite sure there’ll be more safe and legal routes and that’s why we have them,” he said. “They’ve been proven to work.”

Labour’s Jonathan Ashworth, speaking on Sky News, said his party would “study” the legislation carefully to see if it addresses the current issues, including processing backlogs.

Pressed on whether his party supports the “broad principle” behind the legislation, the shadow work and pensions secretary said: “The broad principle is that refugees who arrive in this country, we have always welcomed them.

“People whose asylum applications have been turned down, then of course they should be returned, that is a principle that we have always accepted.

“The problem is, of course, that the Conservatives will come out here and they will get headlines and they will say they are going to do this, that and the other, but they never deliver, do they?”

The Liberal Democrats called it “another half-baked plan”. The party’s home affairs spokesman Alistair Carmichael said it is “immoral, ineffective and incredibly costly for taxpayers”.

Saturday Kitchen Live Viewers Left In Hysterics Over Guest Chef’s NSFW Word Mix-Up

Saturday Kitchen Live viewers were left choking on their full English when a guest chef hilariously got her words mixed up this weekend.

Chef Poppy O’Toole appeared on the BBC cooking show on Saturday when she repeatedly mixed up a certain word, much to the delight of viewers watching at home.

As she got to work in the studio kitchen alongside host Matt Tebbutt, Poppy opened up about how being made redundant from her old job led to her amassing over 4 million TikTok users, thanks to her potato-related content.

It was when Poppy spoke about her hugely successful social media presence that things took an unintentional x-rated turn.

Instead of telling Matt that she decided to start a TikTok channel “on a whim”, Poppy accidentally used the word “quim” instead.

Matt was on hand to correct the chef, but not before Poppy repeatedly said the word and then asked Matt: “What’s a quim?”

(FYI, ‘quim’ is a really grim slang word for female genitals).

Luckily, Poppy saw the funny side, later sharing the clip in question, which she captioned: “I’ve just about recovered from this…”

Viewers were loving it…

On a previous show, it was host Matt who found himself at the centre of a live TV mishap.

The presenter was caught out by a microphone he didn’t realise was already live as he opened the show back in January 2021.

The TV chef was overheard swearing as he was unable to see the autocue for his first link on Saturday’s edition of the BBC cookery show.

As the BBC One announcer was introducing the programme over one of the channel’s idents, Matt’s voice could be heard saying: “Bloody hell Murray, that’s miles away!”

Claudia Winkleman Joined By Three Celeb Lookalikes As The Traitors Gets A Comic Relief Make-Over

The Traitors presenter is set to be joined by three celebrity lookalikes (well, three celebs wearing Claudia-inspired wigs) for a special sketch based on the hit BBC reality show for this year’s Red Nose Day.

In the sketch, Claudia will be played by Dawn French who assembles the celebrity ‘Faithful’ and ‘Traitors’ for a discussion full of twists and turns. Joining her will be Mary Berry and Jennifer Saunders.

Viewers will need to tune in to find out which other famous faces will be under the cloaks and who will be revealed as the ultimate Traitor?

The real Claudia Winkleman says: “I can’t wait for people to see this sketch. I’m so grateful to Comic Relief for putting the whole thing together. I feel like I’m in an alternate universe, and I like it.”

Jennifer Saunders joked: “Worst day of my life, I don’t know why I agree to these things. The only reason why I agreed to this one was to meet Mary Berry.”

Dawn French added: “This was the second worst day of my life. The absolute worst one was meeting Jennifer Saunders. The only reason I agreed to this one was to show Claudia Winkleman the horror that awaits her in the mirror in 30 years’ time…”

Richard Curtis, who is behind the sketch, said: “I’m unbelievably excited about this sketch. The Traitors is the most brilliant reality show of all time, and I hope that we can mercilessly tear it apart. There’s a very impressive group of actors who gathered together to destroy the reputation of Claudia Winkleman and the BBC in aid of Comic Relief.”

Comic Relief Night of TV will air on the 17 March, on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

The Beckhams were out in force in Paris on Friday to support Victoria Beckham as she unveiled her Autumn/Winter collection at Paris Fashion Week.

Husband David sat alongside daughter Harper, 11, and sons Cruz, 18, and Brooklyn, 23, on the front row, the latter of which took along his wife Nicola Peltz as his plus one.

They were joined in the front row by Vogue US editor Dame Anna Wintour and Vogue UK’s Edward Enninful. Other famous faces in the audience included Posh’s best mate Eva Longoria as well as Rosie Huntington Whitely and Jourdan Dunn.

Banned From TikTok in Under 48 Hours

On Wednesday I attended a one-day workshop on TikTok led by my Transformational Leadership Council friend Raymond Aaron. I had never used TikTok before, and this seemed like a fun opportunity to lean in and explore divergently. Raymond has 56K+ TikTok followers, and I had zero, so I was happy to learn from him. My intention was to try it out with an open mind. The night before the workshop, I downloaded the TikTok app for the first time and created my account.

I very much enjoyed Raymond’s workshop since it was very hands-on. He got us posting our first videos quickly and helped us make improvements as we figured out the interface. Soon we were adding titles, transcriptions, and hashtags to our videos.

By the end of the workshop, I had lost my TikTok virginity and posted my first 5 videos. Four of them were just 15 seconds, and one was 60 seconds. I shared some basic tips about using ChatGPT for self-development, such as using it to generate positive affirmations or to help with brainstorming your values – nothing that I’d consider controversial by any stretch. How much could I really say in 15 seconds? I just came up with spontaneous ideas and hit record.

Since we were sharing our results with each other in the workshop, I noticed that something seemed to be off. Relative to what everyone else was reporting in terms of their view counts for their newly posted videos, my views were utterly dismal. Their views were around 10-20x higher, even for the newbies like me who had just created their accounts and had no followers.

At the end of the workshop, we shared the views for our top-performing videos. Others were typically reporting around 100 or 200 views by then. My best video was at 11 views, and the other 4 videos were all in single-digit views still. It seemed that the only views I was getting were from people going to my profile page directly, such as others from the workshop. We shared our new channels with each other as part of the experience. So TikTok wasn’t actually showing my videos to anyone else, as far as I could tell.

I also noticed that my account wasn’t showing up in a search. If I searched on my name or my handle (stevepavlina) on TikTok, my account didn’t show in the results.

Then I discovered that I couldn’t follow anyone. If I clicked the “follow” or “follow back” button, it would change colors to verify that it had been pressed, but my account would remain perpetually stuck showing that I was following zero people. I was never able to use this feature at all, so I knew something was nerfed. I couldn’t even follow Rachelle.

I sent a message to TikTok’s support to ask for help. They replied the next day with a poorly worded message about some kind of suspicious activity detected on my account, and they listed some details that seemed unrelated to how I’d actually been using it. It didn’t make any sense to me. Honestly their reply looked like a badly written AI-generated one. It didn’t seem related to what I’d asked or how I’d been using the service. And it wasn’t clear what, if anything, I could do about it or if they were going to fix the issues. They basically just told me they thought I was sus.

I thought maybe it would fix itself after a day or two. Since this was a brand new account, I figured I was in some kind of probationary limbo, like maybe they needed to do some extra security checks to verify that I wasn’t a bot or something. No one else in the workshop seemed to be having these issues though.

Yesterday I decided to post one more 15-second video about goal setting, even though the account was still nerfed, so I knew hardly anyone would see it. My intention was just to practice a bit more while waiting for my account to be fixed. I had sent a second support email to them with more details about the issue, so I was waiting to hear back on that, hoping to receive a more professional and intelligent follow-up than what I received the first time.

The next day (this morning) before heading to the gym, I opened the TikTok app and saw this message, telling me that that I was “permanently banned due to multiple violations of our Community Guidelines.”

I don’t know why, but that made me laugh at the absurdity of the overall experience.

I have no idea why they banned me. I think it’s more accurate to say they never let me in to begin with since my account was crippled from the start. I’m sure I didn’t do anything untoward. For whatever reason, my TikTok exploration was dead on arrival.

Maybe they thought it was a fake account. While I was on the service, I did see a short video of another TikToker mentioning that people were creating fake accounts to steal and repost his content under a handle almost identical to his. So I wonder if that’s a big issue for them.

Maybe they just have some poorly configured automated filtering in place that generated a false positive in my case. I logged in to my account from three different devices on the first day I used it (iPhone, iPad, and Mac), so maybe that was too many devices for them, even though they’d have all shared the same IP address. Or maybe posting 5 new videos in the first day was too quick for them. I think they ought to be able to handle 2 minutes of content though.

Perhaps it was something I said in my first video about exploring self-development with AI tools, like maybe their algorithm mistakenly flagged me as posting AI-generated content. Do they ban that sort of thing? My videos weren’t written by AI though – I was just speaking off the top of my head. In those first few videos, I was more focused on figuring out how to use the TikTok interface versus putting much thought into the content.

Despite the unprofessional treatment from TikTok, I think I got what I wanted from the experience, which was to satisfy my curiosity about their service. I didn’t get the chance to delve into it very far, but at least I got to take a sip. Since my account is now permanently banned, there’s no need for me to wonder about possibilities there anymore. That’s oddly satisfying since it lets me release any energy that would have been tied up in curiosity about TikTok. Now I know that TikTok isn’t a match for me to invest in, so there’s nothing more to wonder about in that direction. That frees up that energy to flow elsewhere.

So that was one of the quickest self-development explorations I’ve ever done – from start to finish in under 48 hours. And I’m pretty sure this is the first time I’ve been banned from any social media platform, so now I can say that I’ve lost my social media banishment virginity too. How marvelous.

As a spontaneous afterthought… I shared what I wrote above with ChatGPT and then asked for its opinion. Here’s what it said.

Then I asked…
