5 Embarrassing Moments For The Qatar World Cup In Its First 24 Hours

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar has been mired in controversy from the moment it was announced the tiny Persian Gulf country would be hosting the tournament 12 years ago. But while the football has now started, the negative headlines have yet to subside.

In the build-up, thousands of migrant workers died in the nation’s extreme heat and construction accidents building the stadiums for what The Times called the “biggest sportswashing coup” in history – referring to nations that host sporting events to distract from their human rights records.

At the last minute, all alcohol was banned in the stadiums – not surprising in a Muslim nation, but the wealthy can down whatever they want in their luxury stadium suites. What’s more, prior World Cup hosts Brazil and Russia also prohibited drinking in stadiums – but governing body FIFA successfully pressured both countries to lift those rules for the 2014 and 2018 tournaments respectively.

In a bizarre speech on Saturday, FIFA head Gianni Infantino defended Qatar’s human rights record, as he called Europeans hypocrites for complaining about it. He indicated he knew just how the oppressed in Qatar felt because he had been bullied as a boy – in Switzerland – for having red hair and freckles.

All this before a ball was kicked. And little more than 24 hours since the opening game, the action on the pitch has yet to provide much of a distraction.

1. Iran team send a message home

<img class="img-sized__img landscape" loading="lazy" alt="Iran players Ehsan Hajsafi, Alireza Beiranvand and Morteza Pouraliganji do not sing the national anthem before the World Cup match versus England.” width=”720″ height=”479″ src=”https://www.wellnessmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/5-embarrassing-moments-for-the-qatar-world-cup-in-its-first-24-hours-4.jpg”>

Against the backdrop of two months of protests in Iran, the country’s players didn’t sing their national anthem and didn’t celebrate their goals in the match against England – a brave act of solidarity given the repercussions they could receive from the hardline regime at home.

The protests in Iran were sparked by the death of a young woman in the custody of the morality police, and marks one of the boldest challenges to Iran’s clerical leaders since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. It has resulted in the deaths of at least 419 people, according Human Rights Activists in Iran, a group that has been monitoring the protests.

Meanwhile, in the stands, many Iranian fans showed solidarity with the protest movement – holding signs and flags at odds with the image the tournament hosts want to project.

Before international matches, Iran’s players usually sing the national anthem with the right hands on their heart. On Monday they stood silently, their arms draped around each other’s shoulders, prompting Iran’s state TV to cut from a close-up of the players’ faces to a wide shot of the pitch.

During the match, the players didn’t celebrate their two goals, something that has become common in Iranian league matches since the protests began.

2. Armband showdown

A stand-off over armbands is another flashpoint organisers of the tournament would rather have avoided.

The football associations of England and Wales, along with other European countries, announced they would not wear the rainbow-coloured One Love anti-discrimination armband in their World Cup matches after FIFA threatened them with sporting sanctions at the last minute. They feared a yellow card being issued for their captain.

Step forward BBC broadcaster Alex Scott.

The former Lioness defender was seen wearing a One Love armband on air as she presented the the BBC’s coverage in Doha.

The 38-year-old former wore the anti-discrimination symbol as England played Iran in their opening match.

.

Scott received praised for wearing the band from many.

Pride in Football, which represents LGBT+ fan groups in the UK, wrote on Twitter: “England may not be wearing the #OneLove armband, but @AlexScott is right now on BBC.

“This is more than just LGBTQ+ rights, this is Human Rights.”

Meanwhile, comedian Joe Lycett continues to call out David Beckham and his ambassadorship deal with Qatar.

3. Empty seats

Even the basic logistics were not running smoothly.

Several fans heading to the Enngland v Iran fixture endured ticketing problems as they attempted to enter the stadium, with some missing part of the game.

Concerns were also raised about the availability of food within the stadium and at the main fan park in central Doha.

With the 4pm local time kick-off approaching, some supporters were frantically refreshing the official ticketing mobile app on their phones in a bid to have their QR code load.

This left them enduring some stressful and frustrating moments, with a group of England fans also seen arguing with officials as they kept being told entry to the queue was closed and repeatedly moved down to another entrance.

4. Rainbow bucket hats confiscated

First it was armbands, then it was headwear.

Female Wales supporters wearing rainbow bucket hats had them confiscated in Qatar ahead of the clash with the USA, according to fans.

Wales’ Rainbow Wall, a group of LGBTQ+ supporters, said male supporters wearing the hats were allowed to keep them but the items were taken from women.

Former Wales international footballer Laura McAllister, now a professor at Cardiff University, wrote on Twitter: “So, despite fine words from @FIFAWorldCup before event, @Cymru rainbow bucket hats confiscated at stadium, mine included.

“I had a conversation about this with stewards – we have video evidence. This #WorldCup2022 just gets better but we will continue stand up for our values.”

The bucket hat has become the must-have accessory for Wales fans over the past decade.

The yellow, green and red hats are worn in their thousands by the so-called Red Wall, with a rainbow version also produced.

Wales’ Rainbow Wall wrote: “Our rainbow bucket hat. We are so proud of them, but news on the ground tonight is our welsh female supporters wearing them in #Qatar are having them taken off them, not the men, just women.”

5. Qatar embarrassed on the pitch

On the pitch, things weren’t much better for the hosts.

Despite more than a decade of hothousing players for this moment, Qatar’s national team lost 2-0 in the tournament curtain-raiser against Ecuador on Sunday before more than 67,000 soccer fans.

It was the first time in the 92 years of the World Cup’s existence that the host nation’s team failed to win its opening game.

Alex Scott Praised By Football Fans For Wearing One Love Armband During BBC’s World Cup Coverage

Alex Scott has been praised by football fans after she wore a “One Love” armband during the BBC’s coverage of the World Cup just hours after Fifa threatened sporting sanctions against players who did so.

On Monday morning, England, Wales and other European countries who had been set to wear the anti-discrimination armbands at the tournament in Qatar u-turned on their decision after Fifa said that they would introduce yellow cards to players who opted to wear them during matches.

The armbands were intended “to promote inclusion and send a message against discrimination of any kind”. In Qatar, same-sex relationships are illegal.

Former Lioness and England captain Alex was seen sporting the armband during a pitch-side discussion with Kelly Somers ahead of England’s opening World Cup match against Iran.

Alex made no mention of her armband but her powerful statement did not go unnoticed by fans watching.

A joint statement from seven national Football Associations, including the English and Welsh FAs, about the armbands said they could not put their players “in a position where they could face sporting sanctions”.

The statement read: “We are very frustrated by the Fifa decision which we believe is unprecedented.

“Fifa has been very clear that it will impose sporting sanctions if our captains wear the armbands on the field of play.

“We were prepared to pay fines that would normally apply to breaches of kit regulations and had a strong commitment to wearing the armband.

“However, we cannot put our players in the situation where they might be booked or even forced to leave the field of play.

“Our players and coaches are disappointed – they are strong supporters of inclusion and will show support in other ways.”

Captains of teams are allowed to wear “No Discrimination” armbands for the duration of the World Cup.

On Sunday, Alex spoke about LGBT rights in Qatar during the opening of the BBC’s coverage of the World Cup.

She said: “A whole heap of fans from around the world from the LGBTQ+ community not wanting to travel here…

“We reference (FIFA president) Gianni Infantino from what he said… you are not gay, you will never understand travelling to a country where you are fearing for your life just because of who you choose to love.

“To keep saying football is for everyone, we sit here and it’s not, because people have not been able to travel to watch their teams, to support their teams, out of fear.”

Infantino delivered an hour-long speech in a pre-tournament press conference in Doha in which he declared “today I feel gay” and “I feel (like) a migrant worker” before taking aim at European critics of Qatar.

Strictly Come Dancing Result: Tyler West Sent Home After Dance-Off Divides Judges

Tyler West has become the eighth contestant to leave Strictly Come Dancing after he lost out to Molly Rainford in Sunday night’s dance off.

Saturday’s show opened with a spectacular extravaganza celebrating Strictly’s long awaited return to Blackpool after two years away due to the pandemic.

During Sunday’s dance-off, Tyler and his dance partner Dianne Buswell performed their Salsa, while Molly and her dance partner Carlos Gu performed their Jive again in a bid to impress the judges and remain in the competition.

After both couples had danced a second time, the judges delivered their verdicts, but it was down to head judge Shirley Ballas to cast the deciding vote after Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse and Anton du Beke failed to unanimously decide who should go home.

Mollie and Tyler found themselves in the dance-off during Blackpool Week.

Craig and Motsi both chose to save Molly and Carlos, but Anton believed Tyler and Dianne deserved to stay in the competition.

With two votes for Molly and Carlos and one vote for Tyler and Dianne, it meant that Shirley would have to make the final decision.

Shirley said; “Well, I agree with my fellow judges, this is probably one of the most difficult dance off’s that we’ve ever had to choose.

“Both couples were outstanding, both improved their performances but I am going to go with what I believe in, and that is a quality of movement and precision in partnering, and I am going to go with Molly and Carlos.”

When asked by Tess about his time on the show, Tyler said: “I’m more than a two step now! When you watch the show at home, you wonder what it must be like to dance on it, it’s everything and more, it’s changed my life.

“This girl here, has changed my life for sure. To think I was some shy kid who never used to talk to anyone, to dancing in front of millions, I can’t put it into words.”

He continued: “It’s my mum’s favourite show, I bought her to Blackpool, my nan bless her was always watching over me on this journey. But more importantly this show has changed my life in the sense it’s given me confidence, a new found family, every dancer, everyone in hair and make-up, costume. The judges, it’s been amazing to dance in front of you every week, I genuinely mean that.

“But this girl here, I have been blessed with the best, she is what Strictly is about and she’s changed my life, I have no doubt she will be in in my life forever.”

Dianne was then asked if she had any words for her partner. She said: “Endless words! You have been an absolute joy to work with, when I say that, you have come in every single session with the biggest smile on your face and it lights up this whole ballroom.

“You are such a talent, you really are and you should feel so proud, I am so proud of you, your family are so proud and your nan is so proud of you. Thank you so much for everything.”

Gary Lineker Delivers Damning Introduction In BBC’s Coverage Of Qatar World Cup

Gary Lineker has been praised by football fans after he delivered a damning opener to this year’s coverage of the World Cup.

On Sunday, the former England player launched the BBC’s coverage of the tournament being held in Qatar, describing it as “the most controversial World Cup in history”

The fact Qatar is hosting the 2022 World Cup has been controversial since it was first announced in 2010. Thousands of migrant workers have died in the country in the lead-up to the tournament. The host nation has been also been condemned for its appalling track record with human rights, including those of LGBTQ+ people.

As he kicked off the BBC’s coverage on Sunday afternoon, Gary said: “Ever since FIFA chose Qatar back in 2010, the smallest country to have hosted football’s greatest competition, has faced some big questions.

“From accusations of corruption in the bidding process to the treatment of migrant workers who built the stadiums where many lost their lives. Homosexuality is illegal here. Women’s rights and freedom of expression are in the spotlight.

“Against that backdrop, there is a tournament to be played here that will be watched and enjoyed around the world. Stick to football say FIFA, well we will for a couple of minutes at least.”

Gary also opened a discussion on workers rights and Qatar’s discriminatory LGBTQ+ laws with his fellow pundits Alan Shearer, Alex Scott and Ashley Williams.

All three expressed their disappointment and concern at the hosting of the tournament in the country and criticised Fifa president Gianni Infantino following his bizarre speech on Saturday.

Viewers were quick to praise the stance the BBC had taken with Gary’s intro on social media…

Host nation Qatar plays Ecuador in the opening game of the tournament, which will feature 64 games including the final on December 18.

Doctor Who’s 15th Companion Revealed As Coronation Street Actor Millie Gibson

Millie Gibson has been announced as Doctor Who’s latest companion live on Children In Need.

The 18-year-old Coronation Street actor will star opposite Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa, who takes over as the Doctor in 2023.

The 15th Doctor’s companion, who will be called Ruby Sunday, will travel alongside him as they embark on a new set of adventures.

Millie said in a statement: “Whilst still being in total disbelief, I am beyond honoured to be cast as the Doctor’s companion.

“It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have travelled in before me.

“What better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side, I just can’t wait to get started.”

She received the best young performer award for her role as Kelly Neelan in Coronation Street at The British Soap Awards earlier this year.

Millie has also appeared in ITV’s Butterfly and BBC’s Love, Lies And Records.

Jodie Whittaker faced her final battles as the time lord in October in a special episode of Doctor Who to mark the BBC’s centenary.

The actor became the first woman to portray the Doctor when she took over the role from Peter Capaldi in 2017.

During the feature-length programme, viewers were left surprised as Whittaker’s 13th Time Lord regenerated into David Tennant, who previously played the 10th incarnation of the Doctor.

Following the special, it was confirmed David will become the 14th incarnation, with Catherine Tate reprising her role as his former companion Donna Noble for three special episodes set to air in November 2023.

Ncuti will then take control of the Tardis as the 15th Doctor, with his first episode due to air over the festive period in 2023.

The 30-year-old said: “Millie just is the companion. She is full of talent, strength, she has a cheeky sparkle in her eye and is sharp as a razor.

“From the moment she walked into the room she captured all of our attention with her effervescence and then solidified that attention with the sheer torque of her talent.

“This adventure is going to be so wild and so fun, I cannot wait to sail the universe with Millie!”

Russell T Davies, who has returned as showrunner as the BBC show teams up with Disney, said: “It’s the great honour of my job to find the next generation of talent and Millie shines like a star already.

“She’s brilliant, dynamic, clever and a wonderful actor.

“As a Coronation Street fan, I’ve seen Millie survive chases, guns and sieges, but that’s nothing compared to what lies ahead for Ruby Sunday.”

The BBC launched a new collaboration with Disney Branded Television which will see Disney+ stream upcoming seasons of Doctor Who outside of the UK and Ireland.

The new episodes of Doctor Who will be broadcast in November 2023 to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the show.

Adele Fans Can ‘Die Happy’ After Delayed Las Vegas Shows Finally Launch

Adele fans from around the world described having “butterflies” about finally seeing her perform in Las Vegas but said they would “die happy” because of it.

Others said it “did not feel real” to be back at Caesars Palace for her previously cancelled show, but they were sure it would be “worth the wait”.

Hundreds gathered outside The Colosseum venue hours before doors were due to open, forming a long line for an exclusive merchandise store.

The singer announced the last-minute postponement on Instagram earlier this year, telling fans in a tearful message that the show was “not ready”.

Among those queueing for the show was Rafael Faci, a 23-year-old medical student from Brazil, who had been in Las Vegas in January when he learned of Adele’s postponement.

Mr Faci told the PA news agency that despite missing multiple exams to travel to the US again, he could “die happy” after seeing Adele.

“I’m pretty crazy about Adele,” he said.

“I don’t know how I’m going to react, I might cry…but I have no idea.”

He added: “This is my first time, that’s why I’m here. The last thing I have to do before I can die happy is see an Adele concert.”

Cousins Marcela de la Garza, 35, and Jesy Almaguer, 33, travelled from Mexico, also for the second time, to see the award-winning singer.

“We are happy that we are going to see her but we don’t believe it yet,” Ms de la Garza told PA.

“We don’t want to build up our expectations too much but we are happy. Right now I have butterflies.”

JJ Pollard, 24, from Seattle, told PA she was “so bummed” after Adele cancelled her first run of shows.

“I am super excited to be here, I was so bummed when she cancelled but I honestly think it’s going to be worth the wait,” she said.

“I’m super excited to see the show and just be here, her fans are always so nice – there’s a good, positive atmosphere. I think it’s going to be insane.

“We’re here for the weekend and making a whole shebang out of it. I never thought I’d see her.”

Alison Hutchings, 51, and her partner Rhyddian Piles, 47, from Neath, in south Wales, said they had been in Las Vegas for a family member’s 50th birthday and had called every day of the week to secure tickets.

“We feel amazing, we’re chuffed to bits,” Ms Hutchings told PA.

On Thursday night Adele shared an Instagram post online, in which she said she had “never been more nervous before a show in my career” but could not sit still with excitement.

Fans waiting for the show described being “triggered” by another last minute post from the singer, before realising that her message had been a positive one.

Londoner Ross Taggart, 37, told PA: “It was awful.

“I woke up and I saw a long post and I thought ‘oh no she hasn’t done it again’ but then she went on to say how excited she was, so it was fine.”

Amy Jaron, from Los Angeles, California, added: “It was very triggering, I got PTSD.”

Ms Jaron said she had just crossed over the state line into Nevada from California when she received news of the cancellation earlier this year.

“It doesn’t feel real, it’s finally here and it feels like forever ago that we were here,” she told the PA news agency.

“We met so many people so it was a great thing to happen out of a sad thing that happened…we’re happy to be reunited.”

Ms Jaron, 23, said she had been one of the lucky fans to have Facetimed Adele in January, adding that the experience had been “life-changing”.

“You could tell she felt so bad but the true fans understood,” she told PA.

Adele later declared she had “the best fans in the world” and thanked them after receiving waves of support for her decision to postpone.

Taylor Swift Speaks Out Over ‘Excruciating’ Ticketmaster Fiasco

Taylor Swift is speaking out after tickets for her upcoming The Eras tour caused Ticketmaster to crash.

The recent debacle left millions of fans outraged — and lawmakers demanding answers about the company’s operations after many fans were unable to purchase tickets for the highly-anticipated tour on Ticketmaster.

“It goes without saying that I’m extremely protective of my fans,” Swift wrote on Instagram on Friday. ”It’s really difficult for me to trust an outside entity with these relationships and loyalties, and excruciating for me to just watch mistakes happen with no recourse,” she said in the message, which doesn’t name Ticketmaster but alludes to the ticketing failure.

“There are a multitude of reasons why people had such a hard time trying to get tickets, and I’m trying to figure out how this situation can be improved moving forward,” she continued. “I’m not going to make excuses for anyone because we asked them multiple times if they could handle this kind of demand, and we were assured they could.”

She added that it was “truly amazing” that 2.4 million people got tickets.

“But it really pisses me off that a lot of them feel like they went through several bear attacks to get them,” she wrote.

On Tuesday, sales for the Grammy-winner’s new tour began, but the high demand shut down the ticketing site, leaving fans who could not pocket a ticket utterly furious. Some even reported the site sending them back to the beginning of a virtual queue with thousands ahead of them after attempting to purchase seats.

Slews of customers also complained and reported that the platform was not loading and didn’t grant them access to tickets, even if they had a pre-sale code for verified fans.

On Thursday, Ticketmaster tweeted that “extraordinarily high demands on ticketing systems and insufficient remaining ticket inventory to meet that demand” were to blame and “tomorrow’s public on-sale for Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour has been canceled.”

The entertainment company said on Thursday more than 3.5 million people pre-registered for Swift’s Verified Fan sale, the largest in its history, per the New York Times.

Fourteen million people attempted to buy her pre-sale tickets on Tuesday, the CEO of Ticketmaster’s largest shareholder claimed.

“It’s a function of Taylor Swift. The site was supposed to open up for 1.5 million verified Taylor Swift fans,” Greg Maffei, CEO of Liberty Media, said during an interview with CNBC’s “Squawk on the Steet.” “We had 14 million people hit the site, including bots, which are not supposed to be there.”

After the cancellation, ticket prices soared on re-sale sites, with seats at various venues running as high as more than $20,000 as of Friday.

Addressing the incident, the singer wrote on Instagram: “And to those who didn’t get tickets, all I can say is that my hope is to provide more opportunities for us to all get together and sing these songs.”

She added, “Thank you for wanting to be there. You have no idea how much that means.”

Swift recently added 17 dates to the U.S. tour, which launches in March in Arizona and ends in August in Los Angeles. The tour will include 52 concerts.

Matt Hancock Survives First I’m A Celebrity Public Vote

Matt Hancock’s stay in the jungle is to be extended after surviving the first I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! public vote.

Journalist Charlene White was voted off after receiving the fewest votes.

The 42-year-old Loose Women star told hosts Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnely: “This is really, really weird.”

It means the former health secretary will continue his pursuit of “a bit of forgiveness”, which he said was his reason for appearing on the show.

Hancock broke coronavirus social distancing rules during the pandemic by having an affair in his ministerial office with aide Gina Coladangelo, and has told campmates it was caused by the fact he “fell in love”.

The serving MP has faced criticism from opposition politicians and from within his own party for heading to Australia, with the Tory whip suspended.

Prime minister Rishi Sunak said Hancock’s decision to enter the jungle was not “noble” because he was failing to prioritise his “constituents and our country”.

Broadcasting watchdog Ofcom says it has received almost 2,000 complaints about the ITV show – the majority objecting to the former health secretary’s participation.

It came after Boy George had told Hancock on that he has been “hating on” the former health secretary during their time in the jungle.

The 61-year-old Culture Club singer apologised to the MP for his behaviour to him and said he found it difficult to “separate” the politician from the person.

On Friday, Boy George told comedian Seann Walsh: “(I) can’t stand Matt. I have tried to like him and I’ve failed. I find him slimy, I find him slippery.

“I find him just … I made a joke about chocolate. He just looked at me like … I wanted to say, ‘What are you looking at? Don’t you look at me like that’.”

Hancock then joined the conversation and Boy George told him: “I was making a joke about the chocolate. For god’s sake I was like … let’s have a bit of fun.

“I didn’t like the way you looked at me. I made a joke and you were like…”

Hancock said it was not his “intention” and he was sorry for making him feel “uncomfortable”.

Boy George then told the Bush Telegraph: “He’s probably going to be quite upset and I was kicking off a bit and I just thought, ‘you know what, just tell him to his face what you feel’.”

The singer then told Hancock: “I just feel everyone’s trying to be too nice. It’s getting on my tits. I don’t want arguments … I’m just like come on guys, have a laugh.

“I’ll be honest with you, I think your presence has made everyone very compliant.”

Hancock replied: “Compliant, it’s a funny word.”

Boy George said: “I have been hating on you, I have to be honest. I sometimes feel like you don’t say what you mean and you’re not particularly direct.”

He added: “I’m trying to separate you as a human being and you as a politician, and I’m struggling with it. We don’t share the same politics.

“I am struggling a little bit with you. That’s not your problem, that’s my problem. I apologise because I was really slagging you off a minute ago.”

Hancock said he would prefer the truth and has “enjoyed spending time with” Boy George.

Matt Hancock Admits He’s ‘Starting To Enjoy’ The I’m A Celebrity Bushtucker Trials

Matt Hancock has admitted he is “starting to enjoy” the I’m A Celebrity Bushtucker trials as the politician completed his sixth consecutive challenge.

The public voted on Sunday night for the former health secretary, 44, to take part in another trial, which saw the MP for West Suffolk lying on his back in an underground pit as he attempted the Deserted Down Under.

Before the trial, he said: “I’m growing in confidence. I quite like a challenge anyway. So, you know, I don’t think I should say this … I’m starting to enjoy them and look forward to it.”

Hancock struggled through the challenge, which saw him given 11 minutes to unlock 11 stars while faced with spiders and cockroaches, as well as his biggest fear, snakes.

At one point Hancock told the show’s presenters, Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly: “I’m just trying to talk about them (the snakes) as if they’re completely normal.”

Later Hancock got a fright, shouting: “Something’s going up my leg. It’s inside my shorts.”

It comes after he faced his fear of snakes in his previous trial House of Horrors, where a snake attempted to strike him at eye level.

Approximately four minutes into Deserted Down Under, Hancock said: “I can’t get this done.”

The politician became frustrated with himself during certain points of the challenge, and at one point the lights went out and he was left to complete the challenge in the dark.

At the end of the trial, it was confirmed that Hancock had won seven out of a possible 11 stars.

Reflecting on the experience and being in close proximity to snakes during the challenge, Hancock said: “I just managed to keep really calm. I had to be gentle with them, but they were fine.”

Adding: “My biggest fear [was snakes]. I kind of feel like I’ve faced that. I’ve conquered a fear.”

Hancock seemed disappointed with himself, commenting on the number of stars he managed to secure: “It’s not 11 is it? Fine for dinner, haven’t hit it out of the park.”

Tony Adams Withdraws From Strictly Come Dancing Ahead Of Tyler West Dance-Off

Tony Adams has decided to withdraw from Strictly Come Dancing after sustaining an injury.

The BBC ballroom show had to cancel its latest elimination after the former footballer sustained an injury ahead of having to perform in the dance-off.

Tony and his partner Katya Jones had landed in the bottom two alongside Tyler West and Dianne Buswell during Sunday night’s results show.

Host Tess Daly explained to viewers: “Due to an injury sustained on Saturday night, Tony is unable to take part in the dance-off and has decided to withdraw from the competition. This means there will be no dance-off tonight and Tyler and Dianne are through to Blackpool.”

Tony later said of his time on the show: “It’s been emotional guys, I cried for the first month. I came in here with one message, if you’ve got an issue with mental health then please don’t suffer in silence and reach out for help.

“Little did I know that I was going to learn a lot about myself in the process. I thought this ‘journey’ rubbish was nonsense, but my god the rollercoaster of emotion. I’ve got to be honest, it’s tough, physically it’s really tough out there, but dancing is really fantastic for you. Go out there and enjoy it and pick up new skills and explore. I suppose I had better mention this one [Katya] hadn’t I, she is an exceptional human being, she really is.”

Katya was then asked if she had any words for her partner.

“Tony Adams, I will be forever grateful that I was partnered up with you, do you know what I loved? I loved us, I loved that we didn’t care what people thought, we did every single dance our way!” she said.

“You have come here with a message, you led by example, and put yourself out there, and showed everyone you can do anything. And everyone deserves love and to be loved! I love you.”

Head judge Shirley Ballas added: “On behalf of the judges, we’ve enjoyed watching every second, you are truly what this show is all about, and we can only wish you the very best as you move forward. Please carry on dancing, carry on entertaining people, because you are a star.”

The remaining eight couples will take to the dancefloor next when Strictly Come Dancing returns to the Blackpool on Saturday 19 November at 7.45pm, with the results show following on Sunday at 7:20pm on BBC One.
