Critics Are All Saying The Same Thing About Meghan Markle’s Festive Netflix Special

Meghan Markle’s much-derided Netflix lifestyle series may have come to an end – but it’s going out in a big way with one last instalment.

Yes, Wednesday morning saw the arrival of With Love, Meghan: Holiday Special, the first (and, presumably, only) festive special in the Duchess of Sussex’s two-season project which has seen her offering tips on everything from cooking and crafting to gardening and generally being a great first.

Seasons one and two of With Love, Meghan were slammed by critics upon their release earlier this year, with many reviews claiming that the show felt out of step with what’s going on in the world, particularly in light of the current social and economic climate.

And – surprise, surprise! – the Holiday Special has also been met with a similarly lukewarm response.

Here’s a selection of what critics are saying about With Love, Meghan’s seasonal swansong…

“That, mercifully, is the end. I feel both offended and harmed, but in the spirit of goodwill I will add a star to my rating in gratitude for the fact that at least we are safe now until next year. God bless us, every one.”

“I said a little prayer before watching With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration. Give me the strength, I muttered, to endure what is to come, and the grace not to give in to despair. I’ve been struggling since the trailer landed a couple of weeks ago, because it opened with Meghan, in wellies, dancing around Christmas trees shouting, ‘Hey-oh!’. Now the whole festive episode has arrived and it is more than we could have hoped for, or done to deserve.”

“You’ll be reaching for the Christmas spirits – make mine a double – within the first five minutes, as Meghan talks us through the basics. ‘Once a year, you get to do the tree thing’. Advent calendars ‘are about having a surprise every day for 24 days until you get to Christmas’. ’Tis the season to wrap gifts. You don’t say!

“This is reminiscent of the advice given by Pippa Middleton in Celebrate, that seminal work of non-fiction produced by the Princess of Wales’s sister, which recommended serving turkey on Christmas Day and going stargazing at night-time because that’s when it’s dark.”

“It’s not a real special by any stretch, but some YouTube content or the radio that you might put on in the background as you do your tree or wrap your presents. White noise to dull the senses. It’s all a little Stepford Wives; not informative, fun, enjoyable or even aspirational.”

Sometimes, people are given a platform because of who they are, rather than what they can bring, and With Love, Meghan gives me the same feeling as when I am around very wealthy people who think that making a salad with friends makes them ‘grounded’ and ‘relatable’. On the other hand, there’s something soothing, even enjoyable, about the show’s glossy inanity.”

“It’s hardly scintillating stuff, but Netflix has really hit its stride with this special episode of With Love, Meghan. They’re really leaning [into] the frantic energy of its star trying to crack puns without splashing hot oil or butter down her pristine cashmere sweaters. Honestly, the production team must be trolling Meghan here with increasingly bizarre and elaborate set-ups for her to impart hosting ‘hacks’. In fact, are they really hacks? They would make anyone actually hosting Christmas for a big group have a nervous breakdown before the canapes were served.”

With Love, Meghan and With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration are streaming now on Netflix.

Meghan Markle Opens Up About A Painful Parenting Moment She’s Never Shared Before

The Duchess of Sussex has opened up about a challenging time during her journey through motherhood.

Meghan, who shares two children – Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet – with Prince Harry, got candid during Season 2 of her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, which premiered on Tuesday.

During the season’s third episode, Meghan shared an emotional memory with Queer Eye star Tan France – a father himself who has two boys with his partner.

While in conversation, Meghan said parenting has been “better” than she ever presumed, according to a story published by People on Tuesday.

The two discussed various aspects of parenting, including how they will “miss” their little ones when they eventually grow up and move out. People noted that France took it a bit further, saying, “I might die without my kids. I need my boys. If I don’t see them for a couple of days, I feel like my heart is broken.”

It was then that Meghan revealed she was away from her children for an extended period following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

“The longest I went without being around our kids was almost three weeks,” she recalled. “I was… not well.”

In his 2023 memoir Spare, Harry detailed the time the couple had to be apart from their children.

“Our quick trip would now be an odyssey. Another ten days, at least. Difficult days at that,” he said, in an excerpt cited by the outlet. “More, we’d have to be away from the children for longer than we’d planned, longer than we’d ever been.”

In April, the Duchess of Sussex opened up about experiencing postpartum preeclampsia after the birth of one of her children. During an episode of her podcast Confessions of a Female Founder With Meghan, she discussed the experience with Bumble CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd – who also experienced the condition.

“It’s so rare,” Meghan said. “And so scary! And you’re still trying to juggle all of these things, and the world doesn’t know what’s happening quietly. And in the quiet, you’re still trying to show up for people.”

Gwyneth Paltrow Sets The Record Straight On Where Her Friendship Stands With Meghan Markle

Gwyneth Paltrow is setting the record straight on her relationship with Meghan Markle.

Over the weekend, People magazine published an interview with Gwyneth about the constant comparisons she and the Duchess of Sussex continue to face since the latter launched both her new lifestyle site and Netflix show.

“I don’t like that, when people try to pit women against each other,” the Oscar-winning actor told the outlet.

She said that the two, who both live in Montecito, California, have what she described as “a text friendship so far”.

Gwyneth seems open to collaborating with Meghan, though, and said she’d be down to make an appearance on the second season of the royal’s show, With Love, Meghan.

“Sure! Why not? You never know,” she said. “I don’t bake that well, but I can always try.”

The Goop founder previously spoke to Vanity Fair about feeling defensive of Meghan, without actually knowing her well.

“I was raised to see other women as friends, not foes,” she said at the time. “I think there’s always more than enough to go around. Everybody deserves an attempt at everything that they want to try.”

She said that when “there’s noise about certain women in the culture, I do have, always, a strong instinct to stand up for them”.

To make sure the masses knew that the Sliding Doors star and duchess were indeed on each other’s side, the two put out a memorable moment on Instagram in March.

In the Q&A video, Gwyneth read out an an enquiry saying: “Are you comprehending the Meghan Markle beef that social media says you two have?”

“I genuinely do not understand this at all, whatsoever,” she responded, at which point camera panned to a surprise cameo from Meghan, who was seen grinning and shrugging her shoulders as she ate a piece of pie.

Prince Archie Turns 6 – And Meghan Markle Has 1 Question All Parents Can Relate To

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex celebrated Prince Archie’s birthday on Tuesday, which the As Ever founder marked with an Instagram post.

“Our son. Our sun. Happy 6th birthday to Archie!” Meghan wrote, alongside a photo of Archie turning to look at the sun.

“Thank you for all of the love, prayers, and warm wishes for our sweet boy. He’s six!” the duchess added, before asking a question all parents can relate to: “Where did the time go?”

Before signing off, Meghan thanked everyone who attended Archie’s birthday celebration.

“For all of you who came to celebrate with us at his party last weekend, thank you for making his birthday so incredibly special,” she added alongside a red heart emoji.

Archie Harrison was born on May 6, 2019, and weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces.

Meghan said he had “the sweetest temperament” in a photo call with the press after the couple’s son was born. “He’s just been the dream, so it’s been a special couple of days.”

Harry said at the time that “parenting is amazing”.

“It’s only been what, two and a half days, three days, but we’re just so thrilled to have our own little bundle of joy,” he said. “We have to spend some precious time with him as he slowly starts to grow up.”

Meghan and Harry are also parents to Princess Lilibet, who is now three.

Harry And Meghan Call For ‘Urgent’ Protections For Kids On Social Media

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle joined families in mourning in New York City on Wednesday evening as they unveiled a powerful memorial that calls for urgent reform of social media.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended a private vigil for a temporary installation called “The Lost Screen Memorial,” which features 50 smartphone lock screens. Each lock screen is in a lightbox displaying the image of a child whose life ended too soon as a result of social media.

The parents of the children featured in the installation are all part of Harry and Meghan’s Archewell Foundation Parents’ Network and its No Child Lost to Social Media campaign. Parents submitted these “deeply personal images” of their children “to call attention to the urgent need for safer online spaces,” according to a statement from Archewell.

At the memorial, the affected parents gathered to view the installation and meet with other parents, as well as the duke and duchess, who spent nearly two hours connecting with each person at the event.

“It is a universal truth that our children are in harm’s way by what’s happening online,” Meghan said at the event. “No matter how polarised the world is or what people may or may not agree on, one thing that we can all agree on is that our children should be safe.”

Prince Harry got visibly emotional while talking about the harrowing stories he’s heard from parents over the last several years about their children who lost their lives due to cyberbullying or other dangers on social media.

“The easiest thing to say is to keep your kids away from social media,” Harry told HuffPost at the event. “The sad reality is that the kids that aren’t on social media normally get bullied at school because they can’t be part of the same conversations as everybody else.”

“Life is better off of social media,” Harry continued. “I say that as a parent, and I say that as someone who’s spoken to many of the kids here tonight who are not on social media because they’ve lost a brother or a sister to social media. But clearly, enough is not enough. Enough is not being done.”

During the emotional unveiling of the installation, many people wept when they first saw their child’s photo. Families were able to place flowers in front of their child’s lightbox, and some parents described the overwhelming feeling of seeing their child on the screen. As the evening progressed and the sun set, the photos became even brighter, illuminating the entire space, which overlooked the city.

“That moment of coming around the corner and seeing it was a touch overwhelming, and that’s probably where I cried the most,” Amy Neville, who lost a son named Alexander, told HuffPost on Wednesday.

“But then going to my son’s lightbox, he’s cremated in his bedroom and so we don’t have a place to go,” she continued. “And so, that feeling came over me when I got over there – I’m like, ‘Oh wow, this is kind of like visiting the gravesite’ … and so that was a feeling I didn’t anticipate.”

Joanna Bogard, who lost her son Mason, said that “Any time you lose someone, a child, someone you love dearly — just having something tactile, something to look at, something to touch, something to say they were here and they were so important, it’s just such a gift. And this is such a gift.”

In addition to the lightboxes, parents were able to record their memories of their child in a digital version of the memorial.

“They were remembered for who they were, and not so much how they passed,” Bogard said. “And this gave us a chance to connect as a community of grieving parents – to talk about our kids in a way we don’t typically talk about them.”

“So many of us [parents] advocate through education, state legislation, federal legislation. We’re on Capitol Hill; we’re in the state lobby offices. We’re just doing so much. And we’re telling how they passed, but it’s not very often that we get to say, this is my child,” Bogard continued.

Bogard said Mason loved to fish and hike, and that he was adventurous.

“He loved so much about the world, and he was loved and he loved,” she said. “And this gives us that chance to exhale and focus on who Mason was and who our kids were, and then it gives us a chance to say thank you for giving us this opportunity to connect.”

One parent, Tammy Rodriguez, said that her daughter Selena “always loved the city.”

And now, with the exhibit, “she’s right in the middle, and she’s overlooking it.”

“Just seeing that really meant a lot to us,” said Rodriguez, who attended the memorial with her daughter Destiny.

“It’s been an absolute honour and pleasure just to be able to be here and exist with everyone and just kind of feel that mutual love and kind of grieve as well,” she added.

Both Tammy and Destiny Rodriguez spent time with Harry and Meghan, whom they described as “so down to earth” and “so sweet.”

Harry and Meghan have made the dangers of social media, especially as it concerns children, one of their core initiatives.

HuffPost previously reported on a panel on behalf of the Archewell Foundation Parents’ Summit in New York City in October 2023, where parents of children who died by suicide spoke about their experiences.

The parents told audience members about how certain social media algorithms led their children down dangerous digital rabbit holes, and how tech companies and platforms outpaced parents who would consider themselves well-versed in social media.

Meghan said she found it “just devastating” to hear from the parents Archewell worked with, and said it was “impossible to not be in tears” when they shared their stories.

The Duchess of Sussex has spoken out about being the victim of cyberbullying on a global scale. In March 2021, she told Oprah Winfrey she was suicidal while living in the United Kingdom because she felt so isolated by royal life.

“I’m told that in 2019, I was the most trolled person in the entire world – male or female,” Meghan said during a joint interview with Harry on the “Teenager Therapy” podcast in 2020.

“Eight months of that, I wasn’t even visible. I was on maternity leave with a baby,” the royal shared. “But what was able to be manufactured and churned out – it’s almost unsurvivable.”

“That’s so big you can’t even think of what that feels like,” the royal added.

Meghan Made A Kids’ Fruit Platter In Her New Netflix Show – And Parents Can’t Relate

After much anticipation, the Duchess of Sussex’s new lifestyle show With Love, Meghan has officially dropped on Netflix.

In a teaser shared on the streaming service’s Instagram page a day before the release, the actor-turned-royal-turned-lifestyle-guru could be seen carefully cutting and arranging fruit in the shape of a rainbow for her children Archie, five, and Lilibet, three.

“You don’t have to do a big platter of this,” Meghan said in the clip while arranging the fruit – an array of chopped blueberries, raspberries, pineapple, grapes and strawberries – by colour. “You could do this with one small row for your kids for breakfast, genuinely, and it makes the morning a lot more fun.”

The clip, which was shared yesterday, has prompted a mixed response on social media, with some questioning its relatability and who would have time to pull together £40-worth of fruit for their kids.

“Seriously, what busy mum has got time to fiddle about with a plate of fruit?” one Instagram user said on social media.

“I must be an awful Mother as I didn’t make rainbow fruit plates for my children!” added another.

Even Lorraine Kelly had something to say about the platter.

“Doesn’t that all look so clean and gorgeous and lovely and unrealistic though, for the rest of us!” said the show host on ITV’s Lorraine.

She later added: “Are you seriously, though, trying to say to me that you don’t, in the morning, when you’re getting the kids out to school and stuff, that you don’t cut up fruit in a beautiful way and put it in the shape of a rainbow? Are you telling me that?!”

It’s worth noting that the duchess did reflect in the clip that the platter isn’t an everyday occurrence in her trailer for the show.

While prepping the fruit, she said: “It’s a real delight in being able to be a present parent. And it’s a luxury sometimes because we all have to work. We all have a lot of stuff to do, but when you can take a minute to just…”

A member of the film crew quickly interjected with “Saturday morning” and the mum-of-two nodded. “Yeah,” she whispered.

In the eight-part series – which sees Meghan joined by guests including Roy Choi, Mindy Kaling and Alice Waters – the host also revealed her surname is now Sussex, to match her children.

Responding to Mindy Kaling, who said: “People wouldn’t believe that Meghan Markle ate at Jack In The Box [a fast food restaurant]”, Meghan replied: “You know I’m Sussex now.”

She added: “You have kids and you go, ‘No, I share my name with my children.’ I didn’t know how meaningful that would be to me, but it just means so much to go, this is our family name, our little family name.”

It seems the show itself is very much like Marmite – with some loving it, and others, well, not so much. The Independent described it as “queasy and exhausting”.

“Cant wait to watch,” said one commenter in response to Netflix’s fruit platter-filled trailer.

Meanwhile in Google’s reviews for the series, a viewer said: “Really enjoying the show so far. Some great tips and ideas for different foods. I would also like to mention how sweet and lovely lady Meghan is.

“You can clearly see she is passionate, kind and an amazing mum to her lovely kids. Loved the kids tea party idea and very affordable for any household.”

Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Tease Latest Netflix Series

Netflix has offered a fresh look at Prince Harry’s latest collaborative project with the streaming giant.

The Duke of Sussex and his wife Meghan Markle signed a deal reported to be worth tens of millions of pounds with the platform in 2020, after stepping down from their positions as senior members of the Royal Family.

Since then, they’ve debuted the six-part documentary Harry & Meghan, exploring their relationship and the headlines surrounding it, as well as Live To Lead, a series examining different public figures who have made a difference, and Heart Of Invictus, which centred around the Invictus Games.

Later this year, another series produced by Harry is due to premiere on the platform, focusing on one of his passions – polo.

On Monday evening, Netflix shared new photos from the documentary, which is described as “a new documentary series that follows elite global players and offers an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the fast-paced world of the sport”.

Harry and Meghan first announced the project through their Archewell production company back in April.

They said at the time: “Known primarily for its aesthetic and social scene, the series will pull the curtain back on the grit and passion of the sport, capturing players and all it takes to compete at the highest level.”

As well as Polo, which premieres in December, Meghan is curating a series which “will celebrate the joys of cooking & gardening, entertaining, and friendship”.

The royal couple also signed a big-money deal with Spotify in 2020, for whom Meghan debuted the podcast series Archetypes in 2022.

For around the first year of their deal with the audio streaming service, Harry and Meghan released just one podcast, which was a one-off festive special featuring their son Archie and a host of celebrity friends.

Meghan later unveiled her podcast series in August 2022, exploring female stereotypes and labels that have been levelled against women throughout history.
