Zac and Matthew starred in 2009’s romantic comedy, 17 Again, where Matthew’s 37 year old character becomes a teenaged version of himself, played by the former High School Musical star.
Athena Crosby, a close friend of the late actor, previously told People magazine that Perry “wanted to make a movie about his life and have a biopic made,” and that he “wanted Zac Efron, who’s played him already to play him again because he said he did such a good job”.
Promoting his new film The Iron Claw – which follows the legendary Von Erich brothers in the bitter professional wrestling world of the early 1980s – Zac has responded warmly to the suggestion.
Speaking to People, Zac told them: “I’m honoured to hear he was thinking of me to play him … I’d be honoured to do it.”
He continued by adding: “[Perry] was a mentor to me, and we made a really cool film together. I looked up to him, I learned comedic timing from that guy.
“I mean, when we were filming 17 Again, it was so surreal for me to look across and have him be there, because I’ve learned so much from him, from his whole life.”
It was recently revealed that the actor forced Friends writers to scrap a storyline in the long-running sitcom which involved Chandler (his character) cheating on his partner, Couretney Cox’s Monica.
Perry was found dead Saturday at 54 from an apparent drowning in his jacuzzi. He was best known for his role as Chandler Bing on Friends, but he also starred opposite Hayek in Fools Rush In (1997) as strangers who unexpectedly conceive a child in Las Vegas.
Hayek shared a nostalgic Instagram photo Monday that appears to have been taken during production of the film. The reflective carousel also included a screenshot of an old Instagram story from Perry — in which stated that “Fools Rush In” was “probably my best movie.”

“I woke up to the shocking news that Matthew Perry is no longer with us,” wrote Hayek. “It’s taken me a couple of days to process this profound sadness. There is a special bond that happens when you share dreams with someone, and together you work towards them.”
She continued, “I was very moved last year when Matthew shared on his Instagram stories how much he loved ‘Fools Rush In’ and how he thought that the film we did together was probably his best movie.”
Perry had already wrapped three seasons of Friends as one of its most popular cast members when Fools Rush In hit cinemas. The late actor reflected on its production in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing — with fond memories of Hayek.
He recounted in the book that Hayek had “some fun strategies to tap into real feelings and to be more of a leading man than a funny sitcom actor” for the film and “came into my trailer at the start of the shoot and said, ‘Let’s just spoon a little bit.’”

Perry continued: “I did my best Chandler impression — the double-take-and-sardonic-stare thing — and said, ‘Oh, OK! Let’s just spoon a little bit!’”

Perry recalled another hilarious suggestion from Hayek during a pivotal scene in which his character, a real estate developer forced to choose between his old life in New York City and his unexpected new family in Las Vegas, professes his love for her.
“She suggested that we don’t look at each other — rather, we should look out at our future together,” wrote Perry in his memoir. “After listening to this nonsense for about 20 minutes, I finally said, ‘Listen, Salma.’ I said, ‘I’m telling you I love you in this scene.’”
Perry continued: “‘You look wherever you want, but I’m going to be looking at you.’”
Hayek, who married French businessman François-Henri Pinault in 2009, wrote Monday in her post that she and Perry “found ourselves reminiscing about that meaningful time in our lives with a deep sense of nostalgia and gratitude” over the past two decades.

“My friend, you are gone much too soon, but I will continue to cherish your silliness, your perseverance, and your lovely heart,” wrote Hayek. “Farewell, sweet Matthew, we will never forget you.”
Perry’s autopsy results are currently inconclusive, as a toxicology report remains pending.
The sad news of Matthew Perry’s death has sent a shockwave around the world. The actor, who fought addiction his entire life, made it his life’s work to help others struggling with substance abuse.
Perry was predominantly known for his role as Chandler Bing in the hit sit-com series Friends, a role that saw him nominated for countless awards and winner of the Golden Derby Award for Drama Guest Actor in 2012, the Huading Award for Best Global Actor in a Television Series in 2013, the TV Guide Award’s Editor’s Choice in 2000.

However, his activism and determination to bring a deeper, more nuanced understanding of what addiction is, how it impacts people and why it affects some people more than others is his lasting legacy.
Talking with The New York Times in 2022, Perry discussed his addiction in detail, which began at just 14 years old with Budweiser and Andrès Baby Duck wine. Later, this addiction grew to include vodka, Vicodin, Xanax and OxyContin (to name a few):
“I would fake back injuries. I would fake migraine headaches. I had eight doctors going at the same time,” Perry told The New York Times.
“I would wake up and have to get 55 Vicodin that day, and figure out how to do it. When you’re a drug addict, it’s all math. I go to this place, and I need to take three. And then I go to this place, and I’m going to take five because I’m going to be there longer. It’s exhausting but you have to do it or you get very, very sick. I wasn’t doing it to feel high or to feel good. I certainly wasn’t a partyer; I just wanted to sit on my couch, take five Vicodin and watch a movie. That was heaven for me. It no longer is.”

In several interviews following the release of his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,Perry approximated that he had spent around $9 million trying to get and stay clean. He attended six thousand AA meetings, 30 years of therapy, 15 years at rehab clinics, and an estimated 65 detoxes throughout his life. His determination and empathy for those suffering from addiction led him to speak out against addiction misinformation and disinformation.
On an episode of BBC News Night in December 2013, Perry called out journalist Peter Hitchins who was in opposition to the use of drug courts, known as substance misuse courts in the UK, a public health-focused approach to drug addiction-related crimes. Drug courts allow judges to send offenders to rehabilitation for treatment before sentencing and are said to help prevent future offending.
When asked by presenter Jeremy Paxman: “How do you know that these people wouldn’t have quit their drug habit anyway?” Perry was compassionate in his explanation of how the process can “interrupt” the downward spiral that leads to further criminal convictions, “rather than throwing people away”.
When Hitchins said referring to addiction as a disease was “fantasy” and a “choice”, Perry dismissed the disinformation by explaining the classification of addiction as a disease of the brain and an allergy of the body, adding: “You don’t know what you’re talking about,” and suggested Hitchins read the research and evidence available.
But his compassion and empathy for the struggle of addicts didn’t just stop with correcting myths and misinformation. Over the years, Perry sponsored other addicts in their recovery and advocated for their rights.

Last year, speaking about himself, Perry said “The best thing about me, bar none, is that if somebody comes up to me and says: ‘I can’t stop drinking, can you help me?’ I can say yes and follow up and do it. That’s the best thing.
He wanted people to understand the fight people with addiction face, saying:“Your disease is outside doing one-armed push-ups just waiting for you, waiting to get you alone, because alone, you lose to the disease.”
Perry chose to be outspoken about institutions like Alcohol Anonymous, explaining; “It suggests that there’s a stigma and that we have to hide. This is not a popular opinion, by the way.”
He often put his money where his mouth was. One such example was Perry turning his $10 million Malibu mansion into a sober living facility called Perry’s House in 2012. The following year, his project received an award from the White House.

His memoir opens with the sobering line, “Hi my name is Matthew, although you may know me by another name, my friends call me Maddie and I should be dead.”
Throughout the book, Perry details extremely frightening dances with death and addiction. Living through many near-death experiences, from an exploding colon to pancreatitis in his 30s, it wasn’t until he was faced with the possible future of living with a permanent colostomy bag that made him examined his addiction differently.
“My mind is trying to kill me and I know it,” he wrote.
Perry wanted people to understand that addiction wasn’t as simplistic as wanting to use drugs and alcohol. He wanted people to see the bigger picture when it came to addiction and for them to be receptive to suffering people’s openness.
In an interview with Diane Sawyer in 2022 for ABC News, he said, “Secrets kill you. Secrets kill people like me.
He knew that people couldn’t overcome addiction alone, and so, using his stratospheric fame from Friends he chose to speak out on what substance abuse looks like, how it tears people apart and the deep shame and stigma surrounding addiction.

Perry’s death is a saddening blow. His parting gift to us, aside from his comedic genius and acting prowess, is his vulnerable and honest account of a life lived with addiction.
Perry has shown the world over that it’s OK to fall down, so long as you get back up — and keep on getting back up. And that to do so, you mustn’t do it alone.
It’s been almost 20 years since since Friends aired its fina episode, which saw longtime fans saying goodbye to Joey, Ross, Rachel, Chandler, Phoebe, and Monica once and for all.

Back in 2016, much was made of whether all six members of the Friends cast would be able to come together for a special TV tribute to celebrate the work of one of the show’s directors James Burrows.
Ultimately, it wasn’t to be, as Matthew Perry was unable to make it as he was in rehearsals for a play in London’s West End at the time of filming, although his other castmates all appeared.

Of course, who could forget the moment the whole cast did eventually come together on screen for the first time since Friends’ end for the 2021 reunion?

The show had been announced in early 2020, but faced various Covid-related delays.
And while the actors didn’t reprise their most famous roles for the TV retrospective, the chemistry between them was still evidently there as they reminisced about their life-changing time on the show.
The Chandler Bing actor said things became “awkward” between him and his co-star while filming the hit sitcom because he “badly” fancied her.

Matthew admitted his crush started three years prior to being cast on Friends when they met through mutual acquaintances.
He said he even asked Jennifer out at the time, but she turned him down.
Writing in his new memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, which is being serialised in The Times and The Sun, Matthew said he was “immediately taken” by Jennifer when they first met.
He said (via The Times): “I got the sense she was intrigued too – maybe it was going to be something. Back then I got two jobs in one day – one was Haywire, an America’s Funniest Home Videos-type show, and the other was a sitcom. So I called Jennifer and I said, ‘You’re the first person I wanted to tell this to.’
“Bad idea. I could feel ice forming through the phone.”
He continued: “Looking back, it was clear that this made her think I liked her too much or in the wrong kind of way… and I only compounded the error by then asking her out. She declined (which made it very difficult to actually go out with her), but said that she’d love to be friends with me, and I compounded the compound by blurting, “We can’t be friends!’”

After they were later cast as Chandler and Rachel in Friends together, Matthew said that even though he was “still attracted” to Jennifer, they “were able to sail right past the past” and focus on their jobs.

However, things then changed as filming went on, with Matthew continuing: “Fairly early in the making of Friends I realised that I was still crushing badly on Jennifer Aniston. Our hellos and goodbyes became awkward. And then I’d ask myself, how long can I look at her? Is three seconds too long?
“But that shadow disappeared in the hot glow of the show. (That, and her deafening lack of interest.)”
Matthew Perry has reportedly signed a seven-figure deal to pen his autobiography.
The Friends star will write an “unflinchingly honest”account of his addiction issues in the as-yet-untitled book, which is set to be published in the autumn of 2022.
The actor, who played Chandler Bing on the US comedy, will take readers “behind-the-scenes” of Friends and will also explore the substance abuse and alcohol issues that have dogged his career, publisher Flatiron Books said.
According to reports in the US, the deal was in the “mid-seven figure range”.

The memoir is “the book that Friends fans have been waiting for but will also shed a powerful light for anyone who is in their own battle for themselves or a loved one”, Flatiron, a division of Macmillan, said.
Megan Lynch, publisher of Flatiron Books, said: “We need humour, we need catharsis, and we need to agree on something – and Matthew’s extraordinary story, told in his inimitable voice, is that thing.
“Matthew’s book has unrivalled potential to bring people together, which feels especially galvanising right now, a time of isolation and division.”
The 52-year-old was one of the best-known and best-paid television stars during the 10-year run of Friends from 1994 but he struggled to overcome addiction.
In 2016, Matthew told the BBC his drug use was so bad he cannot remember roughly three years of his time on Friends, from seasons three to six.
Perry joined his former co-stars for the highly awaited Friends reunion special in May.

Excitedly accepting the invitation, Sarah later ended up attending what Carrie described as “Gore Vidal’s make out party”, who Jimmy explained was a writer who threw “interesting parties”.
“I didn’t see anyone make out,” Sarah said. “But there was a hat with names in it and you were supposed to make out with whomever you pulled out of the hat.”
Revealing an encounter with a certain Friends star, Sarah continued: “Matthew Perry pulled my name out of the hat… and then promptly left the room.
“I was like, ‘Uh, well let’s kiss!’ and he was like, ‘No,’” she said.
“We knew each other a little bit through one of my very best friends and it was awkward.”

And while they didn’t end up making out at the time, they did lock lips years later when they worked together on Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip.
“We ended up playing romantic partners,” she said. “And then I got my kiss. I got several kisses. And boy, did he regret not taking me up on that at Gore Vidal’s make out party.”

Sarah played Harriet Hayes in the US comedy drama, who was the ex-girlfriend of Matthew’s character Matt Albie.
Studio 60 ran for one series from 2006 to 2007, before it was cancelled by NBC.
It’s been 17 years since we last saw our favourite Friends characters on screen together, and with the cast set to reunite on an upcoming TV retrospective, we’ve been dying to find out what the actors think their fictional counterparts would be up to now.
The actors spilled the beans in a new interview with People magazine, previewing the upcoming reunion, which is set to debut in the US on 27 May.

Jennifer Aniston says she would to see Rachel still working in fashion, having now started her own clothing line.
“It’s sort of a small franchise, like a Nili Lotan. And I live in New York City on the Upper East Side,” Jen imagines.

Monica Geller
Courteney Cox believes Monica’s competitiveness wouldn’t have mellowed in middle age and that she would be “doing something competitively with other mothers and trying to outdo them”.

Lisa Kudrow reckons Phoebe would still be married to Mike Hannigan (Paul Rudd) and they would have moved away from New York, to settle in Connecticut with their children.

Joey Tribbiani
While we got a glimpse of post-Friends life for Joey in the ill-fated spin-off series Joey, which saw him try and make it as an actor in LA, Matt reckons his character has had a humbler life since.
He says Joey “would have opened a chain of sandwich shops”, to which Matthew Perry adds: “And eaten all the sandwiches.”

Ross Geller
David Schwimmer is convinced Ross is still “playing with the bones” and working as a palaeontologist, but that he also would have invested in Joey’s sandwich shop and “lost a lot of his savings for his kids”.

People magazine have also obtained the first official images from the unscripted special, one of which shows the gang playing the epic trivia game from season four, which saw Joey and Chandler win Monica and Rachel’s apartment.
Another image shows them sat down to do a table read of part of The One with The Jellyfish episode.
Last week, it was announced that the cast will be joined by a host of special guests, including James Michael Tyler and Maggie Wheeler – better known as Gunther and Janice.
Joining them will be Elliott Gould and Christina Pickles (who played Monica and Ross’ parents, Jack and Judy Geller), Reese Witherspoon (who co-starred as Rachel’s sister in two episodes of the sitcom) and Tom Selleck (who played Monica’s love interest, Richard).
The Friends reunion will be available to stream on HBO Max in the US from 27 May, exactly a year after it was supposed to launch, before the pandemic scuppered plans to begin production.
It’s still not clear exactly when or how British fans will be able to watch, but HBO productions typically come to Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.
