‘Lost’ Episodes Of Friends Spin-Off Available To Stream Almost 20 Years Later

Nearly 20 years after they were originally supposed to air in the US, the last eight episodes of the ill-fated Friends spin-off Joey will soon be available to watch.

The short-lived sitcom – which featured Matt LeBlanc back in action as his Friends alter-ego – ran between 2004 and 2006, but was cancelled during its second season after negative reviews and dwindling viewing figures, with its final run of episodes never being shown in the States.

However, after Friends’ popularity began to soar again during lockdown, the American broadcaster NBC started making Joey free to stream on the show’s official YouTube channel earlier this year.

Before that, Joey had been unavailable to stream, rent or purchase anywhere.

According to Deadline, the final eight instalments of Joey will soon be uploaded onto the Friends YouTube channel alongside the existing 38, to complete the whole series.

While these episodes are new to Americans, some international fans had already able to watch the entire series at the time. BBC News pointed out that British fans could watch the whole second season in 2007 on Channel 5, including these eight “lost” episodes.

The spin-off followed Matt LeBlanc’s Joey Tribbiani after he left New York to pursue his acting career in Hollywood.

When in Los Angeles, the character reunited with his highly strung sister, Gina, and moved in with his genius nephew, Michael.

Over the course of the series, viewers were also introduced to Joey’s new agent, his fellow actors and his LA neighbours, with the cast including The Sopranos star Drea De Matteo, Ted Lasso’s Andrea Anders and future Emmy winner Jennifer Coolidge.

While the spin-off never featured any of the core Friends cast, David Schwimmer did direct a handful of episodes, while these newly-unearthed instalments also feature an appearance from Robert Constanzo, reprising the role of Joey Tribbiani Sr from the original sitcom.

Despite following Friends’ hugely successful run, Joey struggled to pull in audiences.

While Friends ended with nearly 66 million American viewers, Joey debuted to 18.6 million, which soon nosedived to 7.1 million by the second series.

That might sound impressive by 2025’s standards, but at the time, this was considered low viewership for a television sitcom.

Even in the UK, audiences struggled to connect with the spin-off, with the second episode losing over one million viewers compared with the first.

The executive producer for Friends, Kevin S. Bright, told The Age in 2006: “On Friends, Joey was a womaniser, but we enjoyed his exploits. He was a solid friend, a guy you knew you could count on.

“Joey was deconstructed to be a guy who couldn’t get a job, couldn’t ask a girl out. He became a pathetic, mopey character. I felt he was moving in the wrong direction, but I was not heard.”

Is It OK To Give A Sex Toy As A Gift?

A sex toy can be an exciting and confidence-boosting gift to buy for yourself.

But is such an intimate item ever an appropriate thing to give as a gift to someone else, particularly if you don’t have a sexual or romantic relationship with them?

According to sexologists and relationship experts, the answer is… it depends.

Who should you give a sex toy to?

“Gifting a sex toy to a friend can be a fun, empowering gesture – but context and consent matter,” said Rachel Needle, a licensed psychologist and co-director of Modern Sex Therapy Institute.

“It’s usually appropriate when you have the kind of relationship where sex and pleasure are openly discussed, and you’re confident they’d receive it in the spirit it’s intended: playful, supportive, or celebratory.”

She recommended considering their sense of humour, comfort level and any cultural or religious beliefs that might influence their response to such a gift.

“Are they someone who celebrates their sensuality? Do they feel safe exploring? Trust your intuition, and always come from a place of love and respect,” said relationship therapist and sexologist Joy Berkheimer. “The goal of the gift should be to uplift, not to pry or push boundaries.”

Think about the closeness of your relationship as well.

“If your friendship is open, playful, and you’ve talked about sex before, then you probably have a green light, and a pleasure toy can be a great gift,” said Sadie Allison, a sexologist, author and founder of sex toy retailer TickleKitty.

“‘Giving the gift of pleasure’ is thoughtful and unique, and you’re almost always guaranteed a big smile out of it.”

Avoiding the awkward – and keeping it classy

Allison suggested giving your friend a sex toy as a gift for their bachelorette party or birthday – or as a self-love boost, perhaps after a breakup. As for specific products, consider if they’re more reserved or new to sex toys.

“In those cases, keep it subtle and pick a beginner-friendly product,” she said, recommending “a rechargeable bullet vibe that’s small and not intimidating” or pleasure lubricant.

“Have they expressed curiosity about toys or pleasure products?” Needle said. “If you’re unsure, err on the side of caution or opt for a gift card to a reputable sexual wellness store, which gives them the autonomy to choose.”

She emphasised that presentation is everything when it comes to giving such an intimate gift.

“Keep it classy, light-hearted, and respectful,” Needle advised. “Avoid public gifting unless you’re 100% sure they’ll love the attention.”

In larger group situations like a party, ask yourself whether your friend would be OK opening this gift in front of the other guests present.

“If you feel it may be awkward, give it to them on the side and let them know there’s something ‘frisky’ inside as a heads-up,” Allison said.

Context and consent are important when it comes to this kind of gift and how you present it.

Context and consent are important when it comes to this kind of gift and how you present it.

You don’t need to go overboard with the gift wrapping, either. “Wrap it like you would any other thoughtful gift – no gag wrapping unless that’s clearly your shared vibe,” Needle said.

She also suggested including a little note with the gift, sharing why you thought of it for them – “because everyone deserves some self-love” or “you don’t need them” after a break-up.

“Try something like, ‘I saw this and thought of you, hope it adds a little spark and joy to your journey,’” Berkheimer said. “Keep it simple, genuine, and free of shame or judgment.”

If you think they’ll be surprised by the gift, a little card can provide some context and reassurance.

“If you’re nervous, pairing it with a more traditional item ― like bath products or a wellness-themed gift basket ― can soften the edges while still making a statement,” Needle said.

When it’s not a good idea to give sex toys

As noted, consent and context are incredibly important. Although times have changed and sex toys are less stigmatised, this kind of gift could cross boundaries, cause discomfort or even be considered harassment under the wrong circumstances.

If you don’t know this person very well and have never discussed intimacy or pleasure, you probably aren’t in the type of relationship where this would be an appropriate gift. If you’re on the fence, you could ask to gauge how they’d feel about that kind of present, but be respectful of the answer.

For someone with whom you have a professional relationship where specific power dynamics are at play, this kind of gift would also probably be a no-no.

Clinical psychologist and sex and intimacy coach Lori Beth Bisbey believes gifting a sex toy to a platonic friend can feel easy and uncomplicated if it’s someone you talk with about partners and sex. But advises to be mindful of situations where you have a different motive, though.

“If there is a flirtation between you, you need to be more careful about gifting a sex toy,” she said. “You need to be clear with yourself as to why you are giving this toy and what message you are trying to send. I would suggest thinking twice if the friend doesn’t know you have an interest in them.”

How David Schwimmer And Matt LeBlanc Marked 30 Years Of Friends

David Schwimmer has claimed he couldn’t let Friends’ recent milestone anniversary go past without commemorating it.

Towards the end of last year, the beloved sitcom celebrated 30 years since it first aired on US television and became a global phenomenon, winning a string of Emmys and running for 10 years in total.

Speaking to the Australian radio station Nova, David – who played Ross Geller in all 10 seasons – was asked by host Smallzy: “Do you reflect when you hit a milestone like 30 years? Do you think ‘wow what a great run’? Or do you go, ‘god, I feel really old, don’t say that’?”

“All of the above,” the Emmy nominee admitted with a big laugh, before revealing he “happened to be back in Los Angeles around the day that marked the 30th year of when we aired”.

“I took [Matt] LeBlanc out to dinner, actually,” he shared. “We reminisced and toasted to the 30 years.”

Reflecting on Friends’ continued success, David added: “It’s amazing to me that people are still watching and finding it funny and comforting, and I feel nothing but gratitude.”

In 2021, the entire cast came together for a star-studded reunion special looking back at what made the show such a success.

Science Says You Should Say ‘No’ To That Party You’re Dreading

’Tis the season for indulging in food, premium telly, getting new, soft PJs, and cold, dark evenings that start at 4 PM.

And for some unholy reason, people have decided that now is also the perfect time to socialise. Make that make sense (can I please just enjoy my food coma without having to face Storm Gerrit or trousers with buttons on them?).

There’s nothing worse than realising that the dreaded social event you half-heartedly committed to months ago is coming up ― but a recent paper published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology suggests that saying “no” to the meet-up might actually not be as big a deal as we think.

Say more…

Julian Givi, an assistant professor of marketing at West Virginia University, conducted the study after stressing about declining a wedding invitation.

In his research, he found a separate study revealing that 77% of us had accepted an invitation to an event we didn’t want to attend.

“We worry about the negative ramifications that might arise. Will the person who offered the invitation be angry? Will they think I do not care about them? Will they invite me to do something again down the road?” Givi said.

So, he got over 2,000 participants to take part in five rounds of experimentation. Half of these took on the role of invitees, and half were inviters.

They were asked to imagine themselves in real and hypothetical situations, like asking (and being asked to) events like going to a museum. they were then asked how they’d feel if someone said “no.”

And?

“Invitees have exaggerated concerns about how much the decline will anger the inviter, signal that the invitee does not care about the inviter, make the inviter unlikely to offer another invitation in the future,” the study found.

“This asymmetry emerges in part because invitees exaggerate the degree to which inviters focus on the decline itself, as opposed to the thoughts that ran through the invitee’s head before deciding.“

In other words, you’re probably overthinking how much your host cares about your absence ― so let’s tuck into those leftovers and get going on that box set, shall we?

This Iconic (And Ridiculous!) Friends Scene Was Actually Based On Real Life

Every Friends fanatic loves The One Where No One’s Ready.

Almost entirely taking place in Monica’s apartment, the episode follows the gang as they try to get ready for a fancy dinner at Ross’ work, with various obstacles stopping them from doing so. In fact, it’s so popular that Rolling Stone placed it at number 3 in their top 50 rankings of Friends episodes.

The episode is filled with iconic moments, from Monica obsessing over a voicemail left by her ex-boyfriend Richard to Joey and Chandler battling over a chair (and the cushions on it).

However, the scene everyone really remembers comes when Joey pays Chandler back for stealing all of his underwear by putting on every single item in his roommate’s wardrobe, and caps it all off by performing some lunges.

But what you might not realise is that the scene was inspired by a moment from the writers’ personal lives.

Speaking to Vulture in 2019, Friends producer Greg Malins recalled hearing a story about his friend coming home to find his roommate wearing all of his clothes.

Apparently, said friend had put all of his clothes into a plastic bag and his roommate had decided to, uh, pleasantly surprise him by emptying the entire contents and sporting them himself.

Even the roomate’s declaration of “look! I’m wearing all your clothes!” would eventually be adapted into the Friends script.

Meanwhile, The Guardian also published its own piece about the history of Friends this week, which revealed that the famous scene with Ross’ leather trousers was also based on a real-life event.

Writer Adam Chase said: “I was talked into buying an inordinately expensive pair, which I proceeded to never wear.”

The rest, as we know, went on to become Friends history.
