Storm Ciarán has swept across northwestern Europe today, causing travel disruption and leaving millions without power.

It has triggered a record low for sea pressure levels around England and Wales, and a red weather warning for the Channel Islands.

The BBC has also reported windows being blown in by the storm and said a roof had been ripped off a house on Jersey.

School closures have already been announced on the island as winds have reached 104mph. Forty people have been evacuated from their homes due to damage.

Outside of the UK, 1.2 million households have been left without power in France and a red weather warning is in place in Spain.

Authorities in the French peninsula of Brittany have also encouraged people to remain indoors, at home, and avoid the winds as they crept up to 129mph, with 66ft waves off the coast.

Ciarán comes two weeks after Storm Babet, which came in from the Atlantic and was accompanied with heavy rain and winds. It caused intense flooding in Northern Ireland and the UK.

While there are fears this new storm could last for three days, Meteo France weather service has just downgraded its alerts for strong winds in Mache, Finistere and Cotes d’Armor from red to orange.

Dutch Airline KLM also cancelled flights going to and from Amsterdam. International trains from Amsterdam to Paris were also halted.

The Met Office noted that the storm came off the back of “what was provisionally the joint-sixth wettest October on record for the UK”.

The weather experts noted there’s evidence to suggest the intensity and frequency of windstorms in British winter could be increasing due to climate change – although the data is inconsistent.

It added: “Storm Ciarán is a fairly normal Autumn storm for the UK, and due to the natural year-to-year variability in strong winds and windstorm numbers, significant trends have not been detected in observations over the recent climate.”

Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s (RNLI) water safety manager Ross Macleod warned: “This rough weather could make visiting our coasts around southern England and Wales treacherous and bring very dangerous sea conditions.”

Here’s Who’ll Be Taking Over James Corden’s Former Talk Show Slot

When James Corden stepped down as the host of his aptly-named US chat show The Late, Late Show earlier this year, the first question on the lips of many viewers was who would be taking over his slot.

Enter: comedian Taylor Tomlinson, who has confirmed she’ll be occupying the spot on the schedule once occupied by the former Gavin & Stacey star.

Taylor – who has previously fronted two Netflix specials in 2020 and 2022 – will present a new show, After Midnight, in the same slot that James used to (that’s 12:37am ET/PT, for those wondering).

Produced by talk show great Stephen Colbert, the announcement was made during an episode of the comedian’s own show, The Late Show.

In the clip, Stephen plucks Taylor out of the audience, seemingly at random – oh, the magic of television – and brings her onto the couch.

Taylor begins by introducing herself to the audience and saying: “I’ve never had a real job… I’ve been doing stand-up since I was 16, which is not a job.”

She then went on to field any objections to her appointment as host, saying: “I’m 29 so if you don’t know who I am, don’t worry. I barely know myself.”

With her 30th birthday just days away, Stephen replied: “Happy birthday, I got you a network show.”

After Midnight will follow Stephen’s show in the schedule, and Taylor’s introduction as host will make her the only female late-night host across the United States, and the youngest by 20 years.

After Midnight With Taylor Tomlinson will be based on the previous Comedy Central show, Midnight With Chris Hardwick, which originally ran from 2013 to 2017.

Her show is set to premiere in early 2024.

Glastonbury Ticket Sale Delayed By Two Weeks, Organisers Confirm

The sale of this year’s Glastonbury tickets has been pushed back just hours before they were due to be released.

On Thursday evening, tickets including coach travel for the annual music event were supposed to go on sale at 6pm, with general sale tickets scheduled to be available from Sunday 5 November.

However, organisers confirmed in the afternoon that the sale had been delayed by two weeks to “ensure that everyone who would like to buy a ticket is registered and therefore eligible to purchase one”.

It’s also been confirmed that coach tickets will go on sale from Thursday 16 November at 6pm, followed by general release on Sunday 19 November at 9am.

In a lengthy statement, the festival explained: “Following this year’s Festival, we alerted everyone with a registration which pre-dated 2020 of a scheduled review of the details held by See Tickets in the Glastonbury Festival registration database.

“This was in order to ensure that the details we hold are current and that we do not store individuals’ information for any longer than is necessary.”

“These registrants were asked to take action to confirm their registration if they wished to keep it,” the statement continued.

“As always, registration was then closed on Monday (30 October) ahead of the ticket sale. Unfortunately, it has come to light that some individuals hoping to buy tickets for 2024 have discovered after Monday’s registration deadline that they are no longer registered, despite believing they were.

“Out of fairness to those individuals, we will be re-opening the window for registration at 12 noon on Monday, 6 November. It will remain open until 5pm on Monday, 13 November.

“We urge everyone hoping to buy a ticket to Glastonbury 2024 to either check their existing registration now or submit new registration, which remains free of charge […] from 12 noon on Monday.”

They added: “We apologise for the late change to the ticket sale dates, but we want to ensure that everyone who would like to buy a ticket for next year’s Festival is able to confirm their registration ahead of the sale.”

Next year’s Glastonbury event will take place from 26-30 June 2024, at the event’s usual site, Worthy Farm.

Information about which acts will be taking to the stage is yet to be confirmed, but that hasn’t stopped rumours from swirling, with Bruce Springsteen and Madonna among the latest stars tipped to be performing.

Emily Eavis previously teased that two of next year’s Pyramid Stage headliners are women, neither of whom have performed at the event before, after the festival was criticised over its line-up in 2023.

Boris Johnson asked whether Covid could be be cured by blowing a hair dryer up your nose, after watching a YouTube video.

Dominic Cummings made the allegation in his evidence to the Covid inquiry, describing it as a “low point”.

Cummings said as the pandemic raged he often “couldn’t be sure” whether it was actually Johnson himself who was “the source of false stories” in the media about Covid.

“A low point was when he circulated a video of a guy blowing a special hair dryer up his nose ‘to kill covid’ and asked the CSA (chief science adviser) and CM (chief medical officer) what they thought,” Cummings said.

Writing his his diary on December 12, 2021, Vallance said: ”[Johnson] says his party ’thinks the whole thing is pathetic and Covid is just nature’s way of dealing with old people – and I am not entirely sure I disagree with them.”

Simon Case, the cabinet secretary, also once worried that Johnson was “Trump-Bolsonaro level mad” on Covid.

Boris Johnson oversaw a “toxic culture” in No.10 which saw the “obvious sexist treatment” of women, according to a former senior civil servant.

In shocking testimony heard by the Covid Inquiry, Helen MacNamara slammed the misogynistic environment in No.10 during the pandemic.

The former deputy cabinet secretary said the “dominant culture was macho and heroic” and “contaminated by ego”.

Speaking at the Inquiry, she added that she was not alone in her feelings about how No.10 operated.

“Women whose job it was to do something were not able to do their jobs properly because they weren’t having the space or being treated with respect,” she said.

“It was both striking and awful.”

She added that the shift in attitude towards women had been recent and that despite the team always being dominated by men, she would “not have characterised No.10 as an abnormally sexist environment in the context of Westminster”.

Her statement added: “Women who had worked in the Cabinet Office for some time, reported feeling as if they’d become invisible overnight.”

Asked whether the issue resonated purely on a personal level or whether it had wider repercussions, MacNamara explained that culture was “problematic because it meant debate and discussion was limited, junior people were talked over and it felt that everything was contaminated by ego”.

Messages revealed earlier in the Inquiry show Dominic Cummings referring to her as a c**t and saying he wanted to “personally handcuff her and escort her from the building”.

MacNamara said she found Cumming’s comment both “surprising and not surprising” as “it wasn’t a pleasant place to work” because Cummings was often angry and frustrated.

She added that Cummings was not alone in this type of attitude and suggested Johnson enabled the casual use of violent and crude language.

The then prime minister’s failure to end this behaviour, she added, was “miles away from what is right, or proper, or decent, or what the country deserves”.

Is This Why King Charles Stopped Short Of Apologising For Colonialism In Kenya?

King Charles notably stopped short of apologising for colonialism during an emotive speech on Tuesday in Kenya, prompting a wave of criticism.

But there may be a reason for that – here’s what you need to know.

Why are people calling for an apology?

Kenya was colonised by Britain for decades, one of many countries which were considered part of the British Empire.

When its citizens started to call for independence in 1952, insurgents called the Mau Mau started a rebellion, triggering a wave of violent suppression from British forces and the introduction of a state of emergency the same year.

This “emergency” saw Britain force 1.5 million Kenyans suspected of being part of the Mau Mau rebellion into concentration camps. This lasted from 1952 and 1960, when the state of emergency was lifted.

The country declared its independence from Britain in 1963, 11 years after Charles’ mother Queen Elizabeth II had taken to the throne.

So a royal apology during Charles’ first state visit to a Commonwealth country, ahead of Kenya’s 60th anniversary of independence, has been seen as apt for some.

Ahead of the royal visit, the Kenyan Human Rights Commission said that only “an unconditional and unequivocal public apology” for Britain’s colonial abuses – along with compensation – would be enough.

Why did King Charles not apologise for colonialism?

He, like his mother, is a constitutional monarch. As the Royal Family’s official website explains, this means “the ability to make and pass legislation resides with an elected parliament”, even though the sovereign is head of state.

And the sovereign “no longer has a political or executive role”, but continues to act as “a focus for national identity, unity and pride”.

Apologising for colonialism would err away from the official line the British government toes, therefore breaching his apolitical position.

Even when the UK offered £20 million of compensation to more than 5,000 Kenyans in 2013 after they suffered under colonial authorities during the state of emergency, then foreign secretary William Hague stopped short of an apology.

He just said the UK “sincerely regrets” its actions.

Neil Wigan, the UK high commissioner to Nairobi, told a local radio station last week a royal apology would take the King into “difficult legal territory”.

So what did Charles say during his visit?

On his first state visit to a Commonwealth state since he inherited the throne, the monarch expressed his “deepest regret” at the “unjustifiable acts of violence” the British forces carried out against Mau Mau rebels in the 1950s.

He said: “There were abhorrent and unjustifiable acts of violence committed against Kenyans,” by the colonial forces, therefore triggering a “painful struggle for independence and sovereignty”.

He added: “For that there can be no excuse.”

The King continued: “In coming back to Kenya, it matters greatly to me that I should deepen my own understanding of these wrongs, and that I meet some of those whose lives and communities were so grievously affected.

“None of this can change the past. But by addressing our history with honesty and openness we can, perhaps, demonstrate the strength of our friendship today. And, in so doing, we can, I hope, continue to build an ever-closer bond for the years ahead.”

How did Kenya respond?

His words were welcomed by Kenya’s president William Ruto who said the monarch was a “veteran visionary”.

He told Charles he appreciated the monarch’s “expression of willingness to acknowledge the painful aspects of our shared history” and praised “his exemplary courage and readiness to shed light on uncomfortable truths”.

Ruto said: “This is a highly encouraging first step, under your leadership, to deliver progress beyond tentative and equivocal half measures of past years.”

However, the president also called for “full reparations”, and said “much remains to be done” to achieve this.

Others such as David Ngasura, a historian from the Talai clan in western Kenya, told Reuters news agency that “acknowledgement alone is not enough”.

He said: “I am yet to hear him about compensation and reparations by the British government to the victims of historical injustices meted by the British colonial government.”

Salma Hayek Reflects On ‘Special Bond’ With Late Former Co-Star Matthew Perry

Salma Hayek is reflecting on her “special bond” with her former co-star Matthew Perry.

Perry was found dead Saturday at 54 from an apparent drowning in his jacuzzi. He was best known for his role as Chandler Bing on Friends, but he also starred opposite Hayek in Fools Rush In (1997) as strangers who unexpectedly conceive a child in Las Vegas.

Hayek shared a nostalgic Instagram photo Monday that appears to have been taken during production of the film. The reflective carousel also included a screenshot of an old Instagram story from Perry — in which stated that “Fools Rush In” was “probably my best movie.”

“I woke up to the shocking news that Matthew Perry is no longer with us,” wrote Hayek. “It’s taken me a couple of days to process this profound sadness. There is a special bond that happens when you share dreams with someone, and together you work towards them.”

She continued, “I was very moved last year when Matthew shared on his Instagram stories how much he loved ‘Fools Rush In’ and how he thought that the film we did together was probably his best movie.”

Perry had already wrapped three seasons of Friends as one of its most popular cast members when Fools Rush In hit cinemas. The late actor reflected on its production in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing — with fond memories of Hayek.

He recounted in the book that Hayek had “some fun strategies to tap into real feelings and to be more of a leading man than a funny sitcom actor” for the film and “came into my trailer at the start of the shoot and said, ‘Let’s just spoon a little bit.’”

Perry continued: “I did my best Chandler impression — the double-take-and-sardonic-stare thing — and said, ‘Oh, OK! Let’s just spoon a little bit!’”

Perry recalled another hilarious suggestion from Hayek during a pivotal scene in which his character, a real estate developer forced to choose between his old life in New York City and his unexpected new family in Las Vegas, professes his love for her.

“She suggested that we don’t look at each other — rather, we should look out at our future together,” wrote Perry in his memoir. “After listening to this nonsense for about 20 minutes, I finally said, ‘Listen, Salma.’ I said, ‘I’m telling you I love you in this scene.’”

Perry continued: “‘You look wherever you want, but I’m going to be looking at you.’”

Hayek, who married French businessman François-Henri Pinault in 2009, wrote Monday in her post that she and Perry “found ourselves reminiscing about that meaningful time in our lives with a deep sense of nostalgia and gratitude” over the past two decades.

“My friend, you are gone much too soon, but I will continue to cherish your silliness, your perseverance, and your lovely heart,” wrote Hayek. “Farewell, sweet Matthew, we will never forget you.”

Perry’s autopsy results are currently inconclusive, as a toxicology report remains pending.

What a treat for actors Channing Tatum and Zoë Kravitz: They reportedly got engaged before Halloween.

People reported the new development in the pair’s two-year relationship on Monday, citing multiple unnamed sources. ET later also reported the news.

The couple met while making Zoe’s directorial debut, Pussy Island, a thriller that stars Channing as a tech billionaire who hosts an intimate gathering on his private island.

Behind the scenes, the two quickly bonded.

“Whether it was making me tea or pouring me a drink or going to whip someone into shape or whatever — he really was my protector and it was really wonderful and sweet,” she told GQ in 2022.

“I think if you can do something like that together, it’s a good test. And we came out even stronger.”

Channing has built some of his career on the Magic Mike male stripper franchise while Zoe recently raised her profile by starring as Catwoman in The Batman with Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader.

They’re playing dress-up off-screen too these days ― they were recently photographed in a Rosemary’s Baby send-up theme on the way to Kendall Jenner’s Halloween party over the weekend.

You can see the possible engagement bling on her finger as Zoe, in costume as as Rosemary Woodhouse from the 1968 horror flick, walks with Channing, who’s, well, a baby.

Channing was previously married to Jenna Dewan, with whom he shares a 10-year-old daughter. Zoe, the daughter of celebrity exes Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet, filed for divorce from Karl Glusman in late 2020 and it was finalised in 2021.

Boris Johnson Believed Old People Should ‘Accept Their Fate’ And Catch Covid

Boris Johnson wanted old people to “accept their fate” and catch Covid so that the young could get on with their lives, it has been revealed.

The former prime minister also suggested that he agreed with Tory MPs who believed the virus was “nature’s way of dealing with old people”.

The shocking revelations were contained in former chief scientific adviser Patrick Vallance’s diaries, which have been made public by the Covid Inquiry.

It also emerged yesterday that a former aide to Johnson believed the former PM had asked “why are we destroying the economy for people who will die anyway soon” in the early days of the pandemic.

Writing in his diary on August 28 2020, Vallance said: ”[Johnson] is obsessed with old people accepting their fate and letting the young get on with life and the economy going. Quite a bonkers set of exchanges.”

In a further entry on December 12 that year, said: ”[Johnson] says his party ’thinks the whole thing is pathetic and Covid is just nature’s way of dealing with old people – and I am not entirely sure I disagree with them.”

Lib Dem leader Ed Davey said: “This inquiry is painting a clear picture of a Conservative Party totally unfit to govern our country.

“Every shocking revelation is another devastating blow to the families who lost loved ones to Covid. It is hard to hear how badly Conservative ministers failed them, our NHS and our country.”

Natalie Grayson, national officer for care at the GMB union, said Johnson’s remarks “reveal the utter contempt his government showed to people living and working in care homes”.

“Care workers long suspected ministers were treating the lives of the elderly and vulnerable as less valuable than others,” she said.

“Emergency workers, care workers, residents and their families are the ones who have had to live with the trauma of the government’s failure. Boris Johnson is a disgrace.”

Rebecca Loos has opened up about the trolling she has received following the release of David Beckham’s Netflix documentary.

Back in 2004, David’s ex-PA Rebecca claimed she had engaged in a four-month-long affair with the then-Real Madrid player, in an interview with the now-defunct News Of The World – which Becks blasted at the time as “ludicrous”.

But after the Beckhams discussed the media frenzy surrounding the allegations in the four-part documentary, Rebecca says has been targeted online.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain on Monday, Rebecca revealed: “I woke up to all these horrific messages on Instagram being called horrible names, awful trolling.

“I had heard about trolling before but never experienced it because 20 years ago we didn’t have social media.”

In the Netflix documentary – which is titled Beckham and aired on the streaming service on 4 October – David discussed the “pressure” the tabloid attention put on his and wife Victoria’s marriage.

“There were some horrible stories that were difficult to… deal with,” he revealed. “It was the first time that me and Victoria had been put under that kind of pressure in our marriage.”

“There were some days I would wake up and think, ‘How am I gonna go to work, how am I gonna walk onto that training pitch, how am I gonna look as though nothing’s wrong?’

“I felt physically sick every day when I opened my eyes, ‘How am I gonna do this?’”

Victoria added that the story was “a hundred per cent” the “hardest time” in her marriage, which came five years after they tied the knot in 1999.

Now the mother of two sons who are aged 14 and 11, Rebecca said during her GMB interview that she had told them about the documentary and “what had been said and how it made mummy feel”.

She added: “I said, ‘I feel that it’s very unfair, because of the way I’m being treated now, and the bullying I’m getting and the trolling, and I want to say something, and I’m going to do an interview so there might be some media and how do you feel about that?’

“And so my youngest son said, ‘Good for you, mummy. Yes, I would say something too.’”

Rebecca previously aired her thoughts on the Beckham documentary in an interview with the Mail On Sunday last week, accusing the former England captain of “making me look like a liar.”

HuffPost UK previously contacted representatives for David and Victoria Beckham after the interview’s publication, but did not receive responses.
