I’m A Sweaty Sleeper. This Mattress And Duvet Combo Have Changed Everything

As you will have noticed stepping out your door this morning – it is now bloody cold! The Autumnal equinox has come and gone and summer is well and truly over.

I look forward to spending the next month simultaneously boiling and freezing at various points during the day. (Layering clothing is more complicated than you’d think.) For many of us, the colder weather also prompts a new bedding dilemma.

For some of us this means wondering if now is the time to swap our duvet for a heavier tog, or turning our mattresses over to let them breathe a bit as we enter central heating season.

But for me, the effort and decision is minimal as I’ve finally found the most comfortable mattress ever, and the most convenient and comfortable duvet, as well.

The best duvet for all seasons (and sweat levels)

For those of us who are sweaty sleepers – whether naturally, or perimenopause-induced – the Simba Hybrid 3-in-1 Duvet really is a lifesaver.

As an American who has lived in the UK for nearly 20 years, it has taken me a very long time to get used to sleeping without a top sheet. (I tried again recently, and decided I think I actually hate it.)

I could never really get on with the idea of sleeping with a duvet in the warm, late summer months until I started using this duvet. Basically, it does what it says on the tin.

There are two parts to the duvet – one layer for the warmer months that’s only 3.5 tog, and another for the cooler months that’s 7 tog. If you’re terrible at fast maths, that’s a total of 10.5 tog if you’re wanting the warmest option available. Together, the layers become one fluffy, warm, cloud of a duvet. And on their own, still delightful.

The layers simply snap together with the little poppers on the edges of the duvet. This week I swapped the 3.5 tog for the 7 tog, and it’s the perfect weight and warmth for these funny months where it’s still warm in the day, and then brisk in the evenings and early mornings.

I’m also a big fan of sleeping with the window open – what’s more pleasant than a cool room and snuggling under a warm duvet? – so this is ideal for me.

The best mattress for hot sleepers

I usually find mattress shopping to be a stressful event. How do you choose without laying on a hundred different mattresses? How do you really know which ones are comfortable? How can you ever be sure?

This is where honest reviews come in handy, so when I say that I absolutely LOVE the Simba Hybrid Pro Mattress, I genuinely mean it.

This is the first mattress I’ve been able to decide on as a newly single person, and it felt like a very big deal. I got to choose the firmness and size that I wanted – and I have to say I feel like a genius for deciding on this one. I went for a King, and what I love about this mattress is that it has a breathable layer and I don’t feel like I’m being boiled alive by a hot hob when I’m sleeping (which some mattresses genuinely feel like).

It’s hard to believe when you first pull a rolled-up mattress out of a box that it’s going to actually unfurl into something that’s both comfortable and also thick enough to support you in your slumber – but it truly is. Because of how my move into my flat happened, I only had a few hours of the mattress being out of the box before I slept on it, and it was absolutely fine. By the next night, it was heavenly.

I continually find the height of this mattress to be really impressive. It has several fancy layers that I can’t exactly pretend to explain or understand all that they do, but crucially I know I can take off the top layer to have it washed, and that there’s a breathable wool layer, as well.

Firmness wise, this is excellent. As an elder millennial who just turned 40 – and spends a lot of money on physiotherapy – I can confirm that this is neither too hard, nor too soft. It’s comfortable and sturdy for all manner of nocturnal activities, and it doesn’t leave you with new cricks in your neck or kinks in your back when you wake. Ideal.

The combination of the Simba Hybrid 3-in-1 Duvet and Simba Hybrid Pro Mattress really have helped give me the most comfortable and supported sleep I’ve had in months. I can’t recommend either enough – particularly if you run hot overnight or like to have options when it comes to your duvet tog.

This Skincare I’d Never Heard Of Gave Me The Smoothest Skin Of My Life

There’s something about the thought of prescription skincare that makes me feel a bit anxious.

I love new lotions and potions (who doesn’t?), but my skin can be a right sensitive Sally – I’ve had some pretty uncomfortable reactions to overly-strong concoctions in the past.

Think redness, burning, tingling; all things you don’t really want your face to experience after trying something new.

Yet since having kids, my skin has changed A LOT. Its lost some of its elasticity and vibrance, becoming a bit dull. I’ve also aged because, well, I’ve gotten older (and had many a sleepless night, which I’m sure doesn’t help). There are more lines cropping up here and there. My skin doesn’t feel as tight as it once did.

I’ve been lucky in a lot of respects as I haven’t had bad breakouts or issues with pigmentation, both of which can crop up after having babies (cheers, hormones).

But it’s fair to say my usual skincare combo of CeraVe cleanser and a Beauty Pie moisturiser had been working very hard – and my skin still felt like it was left wanting.

I figured a change was in order. But where to even begin? I don’t have time to visit a dermatologist (nor the money, let’s face it).

In my case, I wanted something that was anti-ageing and would help give me a bit of a glow. I received their:

  • Caring squalane cream cleanser – a super luxurious cleanser that melts off makeup, doesn’t dry you out, and leaves skin really soft.
  • Azelaic acid/niacinamide lotion, which I’ve been applying after cleansing each night. I was really worried this was going to bring me out in a rash but it didn’t.
  • Nourishing ceramide + peptide moisturiser, which I use morning and night. It’s just the right amount of nourishing without being greasy.
  • Vitamin C 15% fresh batch ascorbic acid – I’ve been using this after cleansing in the morning and before applying moisturiser. It does tend to leave my skin a bit tight but I heap the moisturiser on after and it seems to balance it all out.

And that’s my routine.

Crimpit Review: This £15 Toastie Maker Made WFH Lunches Fun Again

I rejoice in recipes, crave cooking, and find pleasure in planning meals ― with the exception of lunch.

It’s just such a nothing-y, unpredictable meal, isn’t it? I never know how much time I’ll really have to scoff the meal down; I’m always too mentally overwhelmed to work out what I’m actually craving, never mind a meal I can make quickly, easily, and with minimal mess.

Enter: the Crimpit wrap sealer.

I’m a long-time “fancy sandwich” advocate for work-from-home lunches, but the wrap and sando rotation runs a little flat and I can’t be bothered to whip out and clean a panini press of a Tuesday afternoon.

This gadget promised to expand my selection of mundane ingredients into the bases for “calzones, burritos, enchiladas, kebabs, and pasties” (don’t mind if I do).

And the instructions were simple; make the wrap, place it in your microwave, press the edges until the wrap becomes “sealed”, and then cook the resulting parcel of deliciousness anywhere you like (I opted for an air fryer).

You might have noticed that the wrap was a little big for the device at the start, but ripping off the excess bread (I chose a huge version; most wraps would fit) proved surprisingly satisfying and delicious.

Once I pushed the lid of the gadget down on the just-warmed wrap, I held it there for about ten seconds.

I was suitably impressed by how well the seal held. It was more than a match for my air fryer basket, which led to a crispy, deep-filled calzone-like cheese pocket in minutes (mmm…).

Once I tried the first one, I knew I couldn’t stop – thoughts of pepperoni pockets, chicken tikka mock-“pasties,” and midweek mini-calzones like this one are just too tempting.

And the tiny gadget, which takes up next to no space in my kitchen drawer, can be used as easily on a sweet treat as it can a regular lunch too (I’ll admit I’ve since used it for a decidedly unhealthy chocolate spread and banana concoction, rolled in cinnamon sugar while still hot).

So, I’m not saying you *have* to try the easy-clean, low-effort, low-space-consuming tool – I just reckon that if, like me, you can never plan what to eat for lunch and have too little space or time to use a huge toastie maker, it’s well worth a go.

After all, it hasn’t earned that many five-star reviews for no reason. Plus, it’s down from £19.99 to £14.99 now too (race you to checkout).

This £15 Sunscreen-Primer Is The 1 Beauty Product I Can’t Live Without

In my twenties, I applied SPF on holidays and if it was a particularly hot day back home. But when my partner, then in his early 30s, was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma and needed surgery to remove it, I knew I needed to wake up and wear the damn sun cream every single day.

After trying many different products – lots of which triggered breakouts, some of which dried my skin – I finally took a punt on Beauty Pie’s Featherlight SPF 50/Primer hybrid (£25, or £15 for members). And I haven’t looked back since.

The product, made in Switzerland, contains ingredients to “help fight inflammation and sun damage”. It’s known as a non-comedogenic SPF, meaning the lightweight formula shouldn’t clog pores. I can confirm it doesn’t.

I’ve also never had sunburn on my face while wearing it, so I’m guessing (/hoping) it’s doing the trick in the sun damage department.

I tend to apply the SPF after Beauty Pie’s triple hyaluronic acid deep moisture miracle cream (£45, or £22 for members) and the result is lusciously luminous skin that feels silky smooth.

The primer adds a bit of a glow that no other skincare product seems to offer me and my typically dull skin. It’s not greasy, or streaky. Makeup goes on a treat, too.

There is not a day that goes by when I don’t use it – even those days when I’m sat at home, makeup free, I make sure that I slather this on my face after showering.

It’s pretty watery – so be careful when you squeeze the bottle – but it glides onto the skin wonderfully, leaving your face feeling hydrated and glowy.

I Tried My Best To Wreck These Hiking Shoes In Iceland. They Still Look Brand New.

When I was asked to review hiking shoes from Merrell – a Gorpcore outdoor brand loved by the likes of Meghan Markle, Central Cee, Bradley Cooper, and Julia Fox – I knew I had to really put them through their paces.

Living in Scotland, I fortunately have plenty of trails to put hiking shoes to the test on, but with Merrell claiming the Moab Speed 2 GORE-TEX® is the ‘latest innovation in hiking’, a hike up a Munro wasn’t going to cut the mustard.

Enter the rugged, snowy and wet landscape of Iceland.

During my CityHubs excursion to Reykjavik (more on that to come), I’d be hiking up mountains, trekking through valleys to hunt the Northern Lights and stomping through ice fields. Game on, Merrell.

I boldly didn’t even break my pair of Moab Speed 2 GORE-TEX® in before starting a weekend of outdoor activities and was incredibly surprised that the shoes (which come in a both men’s and women’s version) didn’t rub or pinch at all. This makes sense, considering their FloatPro™ Foam midsole are designed for lightweight comfort that lasts – a feature that Merrell are famous for.

After doing over 40k steps everyday for three days, I was VERY grateful for their 30% increase in foam underfoot.

The hiking shoes also boast a padded collar and a special ‘bellows’ tongue that helps to keep debris out on your adventures (no annoying wee stones in your shoes here).

According to Merrell, in some very techy terms: “Lightweight FlexPlate™ technology provides torsional rigidity, lateral stability, and forefoot flexibility.”

In layman’s terms – my feet felt super secured, my ankles stable and no matter the terrain I marched through or over, at no point did I feel like a stumble was on the cards. I’ve had major reconstructive knee surgery in the past year, so I needed to feel safe. Even walking over ice I had zero worries – these shoes had serious grip.

And thank god for GORE-TEX®. We got stuck in a pretty impressive snow storm and while I was completely soaked through (yes, I maybe didn’t prepare quite well enough), my feet were bone dry. A few of our hikes saw some muddy trails and my Merrells withstood it no problem, nothing a rinse didn’t solve.

Outside of their tech specs, the Moab Speed 2 GORE-TEX® also come in a whopping 12 different colour ways and while I opted for black with white detailing, you can go for electric blue, orange hues or mustard.

There’s no arguing that Merrell’s Moab Speed 2 GORE-TEX® look pretty damn good too – you only have to look at some of the styling pictures on the site.

And on a personal note, one of my favourite things about the Moab Speed 2 GORE-TEX® – outside of just how damn indestructible they were – is their eco-credentials:

  • 50% recycled removable EVA foam footbed

I’ve Finally Found A Toddler Cup That Doesn’t Leave Puddles Of Water Everywhere

Over the years I have purchased an embarrassingly large number of baby and toddler cups in the hopes that one day, one of them would not leak. (I’m sadly not kidding, we have a cupboard full of them.)

There have been sippy beakers with fold down nozzles, 360 sippy cups, tip and sip cups, stainless steel jobbies, silicone ones – a collection of vessels picked up in supermarkets and via 3am Amazon purchases.

And all of them have dribbled water out in varying degrees.

So you can imagine my extreme surprise when I discovered a toddler cup that doesn’t leak at all. It might not surprise die-hard fans of the brand, but the cup in question is from Tommee Tippee.

Recently, the baby brand launched a new leakproof range and I was pleased to get my hands on its new weighted straw cup for my one-year-old.

She’d been using a weighted straw cup from another brand but I found every time she put the cup down and left it lying on its side, water would seep out.

The result? Little puddles of wet dotted around our house. Fine on carpet, not-so-great on your nice wooden floors, even worse on your slippery kitchen tiles.

I was pretty sceptical that the cup would be leakproof, given my history (and cupboard full of useless drinking vessels). But incredibly we’ve been trying the Tommee Tippee cup for over a month now and there have been zero spills. Zilch!

Even when she launches the cup to the floor from her high chair: nada! It’s a modern-day miracle.

What wizardry is this? Well, the straw has a two-piece valve which stops water from escaping and somehow actually works.

It also has a flip-down cover to keep the straw nice and clean when not in use (a great feature when you’re out and about and you need to shove it under the buggy quickly).

According to Tommee Tippee, the cup is BPA free, as well as dishwasher and steriliser safe. Big fan of the fact it also comes with a handy brush to clean the straw.

The cups retail at £9.99 which I would argue is well worth the money if you don’t want to water-damaged floors or a soaking wet changing bag.

I Haven’t Paid Full Price For Electronics Since 2016 – Here’s How

Just after the rising price of bills has been announced, another blow; Forbes speculates that tariffs might increase the cost of consoles too.

That might have got me down if I’d bought full-price electronics in the past nine years (I’ve wanted to gift my partner a PS5 for ages), but I haven’t, so it didn’t.

I have relied on second-hand sites like refurbished electronics company Back Market for ages now.

Not only are they cheaper, but they’re kinder to the planet; and Back Market, my favourite since about 2022, allows you to trade in your old tech for their verified refurbished tech too.

And while I didn’t do that for the PS5, I was still paying significantly less than full price – like, almost £112 less than full price.

Despite that significant discount, the product’s running as good as new on our also-Back Market-sourced TV.

After all, the company has rigorous rules for their Verified Refurbished products. In the case of gaming consoles, that means they’re given a full reset and data scrub, checked to make sure they’re not stolen or locked, and tested by industry pros.

So it’s no wonder my partner (who’s a sterner judge than me on this front) wouldn’t have known the console was second-hand unless I’d told him; and if he had noticed something off, he’d have been covered by the company’s Verified Refurbished one-year warranty and free 30-day returns policy.

That’s only one impressive tech deal, though. I’ve bought phones, the aforementioned laptop, my smartwatch, and even a hot air styler and coffee machine from the site before; discounts can run as high as 50% compared to new.

I like the fact that I can choose the condition my tech’s in (I wanted an “excellent” laptop, but was more than happy with a “good” smartwatch, for which I don’t have many demands).

As someone who’s been all over refurbished tech pretty much as soon as I started buying my own electronics, though, the thing that keeps bringing me back to Back Market is the quality. I simply haven’t found anywhere else whose refurbished products are as reliably good.

So, whether you’re after beauty or gaming tech or just fancy an upgraded phone, I reckon you can’t save much more for a professionally refurbished deal.
