Jeremy Corbyn Responds To Zarah Sultana’s Claims Of Setting Up New Party

Jeremy Corbyn has confirmed he is building a “real alternative” to the Labour Party which will “soon take shape”.

In a statement on X, the former Labour leader – who has sat as an independent since his expulsion in 2024 – said he would build “something that is desperately missing from our broken political system: hope”.

It comes after Zarah Sultana, who lost the Labour whip last year, announced last night that she was quitting the party and that she would be co-leading the formation of this new party with Corbyn.

However, in his statement, he has suggested “discussions are ongoing” about what the new group might look like.

His post comes after reports suggested he was “furious and bewildered” at her Sultana’s announcement.

His full statement reads:

Real change is coming.

One year on from the election, this Labour government has refused to deliver the change people expected and deserved. Poverty, inequality and war are not inevitable. Our country needs to change direction, now.

Congratulations to Zarah Sultana on her principled decision to leave the Labour Party. I am delighted that she will help us build a real alternative.

The democratic foundations of a new kind of political party will soon take shape. Discussions are ongoing – and I am excited to work alongside all communities to fight for the future people deserve.

Together, we can create something that is desperately missing from our broken political system: hope.

Corbyn published his remarks on the anniversary of Labour’s landslide victory in the general election.

The last 12 months have been incredibly tumultuous for Keir Starmer’s government, with 49 Labour rebels voting against planned welfare cuts just this week.

However, home secretary Yvette Cooper has rejected criticism from Sultana that the government had “completely failed to improve people’s lives”.

She told Sky News that “change doesn’t just happen at the flick of a switch”.

Taskmaster Season 20 Cast: 5 Celebrities On The New Line-Up Announced

The five celebrities taking part in the next season of the hit comedy competition series Taskmaster have been unveiled.

On Thursday evening, Channel 4 revealed the line-up for the Bafta-winning show’s 20th run, which will air later this year.

Joining the cast this time around will be The League Of Gentlemen and Inside No. 9 creator Reece Shearsmith and the comedian and actor Sanjeev Bhaskar, best known for his roles in shows like Goodness Gracious Me, The Kumars At No. 42 and Unforgotten.

They’ll be joined by stand-up comedians Maisie Adam, Ania Magliano and Phil Ellis.

A Channel 4 press release teased: “The almighty Taskmaster Greg Davies and his faithful admin keeper Alex Horne have gathered some of the most brilliant and eclectic comedy minds and assigned them one mission: to become a Taskmaster Champion.”

No release date for the 20th series of Taskmaster has been given, but Channel 4 has insisted that more information will be “revealed in due course”.

The last season of Taskmaster aired over several weeks earlier in the year, featuring appearances from the likes of Rosie Ramsey, Jason Mantzoukas, Fatiha El-Ghorri, Stevie Martin and Matthew Baynton.

It’s now been almost 10 years since Taskmaster first aired on Channel 4 in 2015, quickly going on to become one of the broadcaster’s most popular original shows.

Back in 2020, it won a Bafta in the Best Comedy Entertainment Programme, beating competition from The Graham Norton Show, The Last Leg and The Ranganation, and was nominated in the same category once again earlier this year.

Taskmaster has also spawned several international remakes in territories like Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Canada, with varying levels of success, while a live experience inspired by the show launched in London last year, before closing in February.

Jeremy Corbyn To Set Up New Left-Wing Party With Former Labour MP

Jeremy Corbyn is to set up a new left-wing party alongside a former Labour MP.

Zarah Sultana, who lost the Labour whip a year ago and currently sits in the Commons as an independent, announced the move in a statement posted on X.

The Coventry South MP said other independent MPs would also be joining the new party.

She said: “Today, after 14 years, I am resigning from the Labour Party.

“Jeremy Corbyn and I will co-lead the founding of a new party, with other independent MPs, campaigners and activists across the country.

“Westminster is broken but the real crisis is deeper. Just 50 families now own more wealth than half the UK population. Poverty is growing, inequality is obscene and the two-party system offers nothing but managed decline and broken promises.”

Sultana, who was first elected as a Labour MP in 2019, had the Labour whip removed last July after she voted against the government to back the lifting of the two-child benefit cap.

She said Labour had “completely failed to improve people’s lives”, which had led to Nigel Farage’s Reform UK leading in the polls.

She added: “We are not going to take this any more. We’re not an island of strangers, we’re an island that’s suffering. We need homes and lives we can actually afford, not rip-off bills we pay every month to a tiny elite bathing in cash. We need our money spent on public services, not forever wars.

“In 2029 the choice will be stark: socialism or barbarism. Billionaires already have three parties fighting for them. It’s time the rest of us had one. Join us. The time is now.”

Corbyn, who led Labout to election defeat in 2017 and 2019, hinted that a new party was in the offing on ITV’s Peston programme on Wednesday evening.

He said: ”That grouping [of independents] will come together, there will be an alternative.”
