Trump’s Press Secretary Has A Bizarre Theory Why Allies Should Help The US Over Iran

Donald Trump’s press secretary has claimed other countries should help the US in the Iran crisis because they are “benefitting greatly” from the war.

The US president urged international partners including the UK to help keep the Strait of Hormuz open by sending warships to the region at the weekend amid Iranian attempts to effectively close the major oil shipping lane.

But, when allies resisted Trump’s pleas, the president sent a chilling warning about the future of Nato – and vowed to “remember” which countries did not assist him.

A reporter asked Trump’s press secretary Karoline Leavitt why nations who were not informed of the US-Israel strikes on Iran in advance should risk their own militaries to help the war.

She replied: “These other countries are benefitting greatly from the United States military taking out the threat of Iran.”

The Iran war has actually sent crude Brent oil prices sky high, exceeding $100 a barrel as Tehran disrupts oil exports from the Gulf region.

This has sparked wider fears about the cost of living as the global markets express great unease about the current conflict.

But Leavitt said: “The rogue Iranian regime has long not just posed a threat to the United States of America but of course to our Gulf and Arab partners in the region.

“As you see, Iran has struck more than 300 civilian targets in the Gulf region.”

Tehran has escalated its aggression against the US military bases in the Middle East with widespread drone and missile attacks.

Leavitt added: “Their ballistic missile capability that the United States military is currently wiping out was a direct and imminent threat to our European allies as well as our bases in the region, which is why President Trump took this action in the first place.”

The White House’s reasoning behind its strikes against Iran have varied significantly, from claims about limiting Tehran’s abilities to make nuclear weapons to pushing for regime change.

Senior figures in the British government have also been unable to explain exactly why the US decided to bomb Iran.

Leavitt also said: “This is something that not the United States but the entire western world has agreed with for many many years, so I think the president is absolutely right to call on these countries to do more, to work with the United States to strengthen the Strait of Hormuz so we can stop this terrorist regime from restricting the free flow of energy.

“The fact they are doing so just underscores why President Trump needed to take this action in the first place.”

Trump Launches Strongest Attack On Starmer Yet Over ‘Terrible’ Iran Move

Donald Trump has claimed it was “terrible” of Keir Starmer not to get involved with the US attacks on Iran in his strongest criticism of the prime minister yet.

The US president said he was “very surprised” when Britain refused America’s requests to “send ships over” to the Middle East.

“You’re our oldest ally,” the president said at a press conference while speaking about the UK. “We spent a lot of money on Nato, and all of these things to protect you, we were protecting them, we are working with them to protect Ukraine – that’s thousands of miles away, separated by a vast ocean.

“We don’t have to do that, but we did it – well, Biden did it,” he said.

But he insisted the US did not need to help with that war.

“I think it’s terrible,” Trump continued. “No, I was very surprised. I told him. We requested two aircraft carriers which they had. And he didn’t want to do it.

“Then right after the war essentially ended, meaning they were obliterated, he said, ‘I would like to send the aircraft carriers’.

“I said, ‘I don’t need them after the war was ended and won. I need them before the war’.

“I was very upset with – not upset, I was not happy – with the UK. I think they will be involved, yeah, maybe.

“But they should be involved enthusiastically! We’ve been protecting these countries for years.”

He added: “Putin fears us. He doesn’t fear Nato. There’s no fear of Europe whatsoever.”

Downing Street has been approached for comment.

Trump has been fuming over Starmer’s reluctance to join the US in its offensive against Iran for weeks.

The UK rejected US requests to use British military bases to launch preemptive strikes against Iran shortly before America and Israel struck Tehran.

A day later, Starmer gave Trump permission to use the sites for “limited and defensive” attacks.

The president has repeatedly insisted the PM is trying to join a war after it has already been “won” – even though hostilities continue.

On Saturday, Trump also requested international partners sent warships to the Strait of Hormuz to stop Iranian efforts to close the major waterway.

Starmer has resisted such calls, telling reporters today that the UK “will not be drawn into the wider war”.

Trump also used his press conference to criticise Starmer for delaying a decision over sending military aide to the Middle East.

Trump said: “Keir Starmer yesterday told me, ‘I’m meeting with my team to make a determination’.

“I said, ‘you don’t need to meet your team, you’re the prime minister, you can make your own decision.’”

Oscars 2026: Anna Wintour Nods Miranda Priestly While Presenting With Anne Hathaway

While her sense of humour is perhaps not the first thing that comes to mind when most of us think of Anna Wintour, she certainly managed to raise a smile while presenting at the 2026 Oscars.

Early on in Sunday night’s ceremony, the long-time Vogue editor came on stage to present two awards with Anne Hathaway.

Anne, of course, is the star of The Devil Wears Prada and its upcoming sequel, both of which feature the character Miranda Priestly, heavily rumoured to have been inspired by Anna.

Introducing the Best Costume Design prize, the Oscar winner told the audience: “A character’s costume is key to telling a story.

“One could argue that one’s wardrobe in real life is also key. Does it make one appear elegant and attractive on, say, the most important night in Hollywood, and say when the most important people in fashion will be judging how one looks?”

Turning to her co-host, she continued: “Anna, just curious, what do you think of my dress tonight?”

By way of response, Anna simply donned her sunglasses and declared: “And the nominees are…”

Following this, the duo then announced the winners for Best Makeup And Hairstyling, with Anna intentionally misnaming her co-presenter “Emily” in an even more explicit nod to The Devil Wears Prada.

In the original Devil Wears Prada film and the new follow-up, Meryl Streep plays Miranda Priestly, the editor of the fictitious Runway magazine, whose look and mannerisms have sparked comparisons with Anna Wintour for two decades now.

Last year, the award-winning journalist and Met Gala organised claimed: “I went to the [Devil Wears Prada] premiere wearing Prada, completely having no idea what the film was going to be about.

“I think that the fashion industry was very sweetly concerned for me about the film that it was gonna paint me in some kind of difficult light.”

Praising Meryl’s “fantastic” work in the movie, she then insisted: “I found [the film] highly enjoyable and very funny. It had a lot of humour to it, it had a lot of wit.

“I mean, [the actors are] all amazing. And in the end, I thought it was a fair shot.”

Oscars 2026: Barbra Streisand Moves Viewers To Tears As She Sings During Tributes

The Oscars may well have set a new bar when it came to “in memoriam” tributes during this year’s ceremony.

Regrettably, because the film world has lost so many iconic performers and filmmakers in the last 12 months, this year’s Academy Awards tributes section was extended, with Billy Crystal leading a star-studded homage to Rob Reiner and Rachel McAdams honouring Diane Keaton.

At the end of the segment, Oscar winner Barbra Streisand came out to remember her The Way We Were co-star Robert Redford.

While it had previously been rumoured that this would include a musical tribute, Barbra is notoriously reluctant to sing live in public these days, so we took the rumours with a pinch of salt.

However, the icon made a rare exception for her beloved co-star, concluding the tributes with a short blast of The Way We Were’s signature song, which won the Oscar for Best Original Song back in 1974.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house after Barbra’s performance, and that apparently includes those watching along at home…

Before her performance, Barbra recalled: “After I read the first script of The Way We Were, I could only imagine one man in the role and that was Robert Redford. But he turned it down because he said the character had no backbone and didn’t stand for anything. And he was right.

“So, many drafts later, Bob finally agreed to do it. He was a brilliant, subtle actor, and we had a wonderful time playing off each other because we never quite knew what the other one was going to do in a scene. And I’m thrilled that The Way We Were is now considered a classic love story – but it’s also about a dark time in our history, the late 40s and early 50s, when people were informing on each other and subject to loyalty oaths.”

She continued: “Bob had real backbone – on and off the screen. He spoke up to defend freedom of the press, protect the environment and encouraged new voices at his Sundance Institute, some of whom are up for Oscars tonight, which is so great.

“He was thoughtful and bold. I called him an intellectual cowboy who blazed his own trail, and won the Academy Award for Best Director. And I miss him now more than ever, even though he loved teasing me. He’d call me ‘Babs’, and I’d say, ‘Bob, do I look like a Babs? I’m not a Babs’. But the way he said it made me laugh.

“Many years later, we were chatting on the phone about the usual – politics, art, our favourites – and as we were hanging up, he said, ‘Babs, I love you dearly and I always will’. And in the last note I ever wrote to Bob, I ended it with, ‘I love you, too’. And I signed it ‘Babs’.”

The Oscars 2026 Winners Included A Tie In The Best Live-Action Short Category

Before the weekend, there had only ever been six ties at the Oscars.

However, on Sunday night, movie history was made when a seventh occurred.

During this year’s ceremony, Marvel star Kumail Nanjiani was welcomed to the stage to announce the winner in the Best Live Action Short category.

After opening the envelope, he revealed that two of the nominees had received the same number of votes from Academy members, meaning they’d each be awarded an Oscar.

“It’s a tie!” he exclaimed, before assuring the audience: “I’m not joking! It’s actually a tie, so everyone calm down!”

He then explained that he’d be announcing the winners one at a time, first welcoming the producers of The Singers to the stage before the crew behind Two People Exchanging Saliva collected theirs.

Uncomfortably, during the latter, the Oscars team attempted to cut the team’s acceptance speech short, before the night’s host Conan O’Brien then encouraged them to continue.

The Oscars’ most famous tie came in 1969, when screen icon Katharine Hepburn and then-newcomer Barbra Streisand split the win for Best Actress for their performances in The Lion In Winter and Funny Girl.

Back in 1932, the first tie at the Oscars came during the awards show’s fifth year, when Fredric March and Wallace Beery were both named Best Actor.

Technically, the former had received one more vote than the latter, but at this time, a rule was in place meaning that anyone within three votes of the winner would also receive an award.

So Much For So Little and A Chance To Live then split Best Documentary Short in 1950, while a similar draw occurred 37 years later when the features Artie Shaw: Time Is All You’ve Got and Down And Out In America got the same number of votes in the Best Documentary Feature category.

Trevor and Franz Kafka’s It’s A Wonderful Life were the two winners in the Best Live-Action Short category in the mid-1990s, while the latest tie was just over a decade ago, in 2013, with Zero Dark Thirty and Skyfall winning Best Sound Editing.

5 Science-Backed Ways To Speed Up Your Running Pace

I was a relatively normal person before I started running, but now, I accost my friends with topics like my VO2 max and “Jeffing”.

I can’t help it. Every runner I know wants to run a little faster and a little longer than their current PB.

So, we thought we’d share some science-backed ways to boost your pace:

1) Try tempo runs, like Fartlek sessions

The Swedish “speed play” method is a kind of interval training. It involves running at a slower pace for a set period, then sprinting for another preset interval.

There are no set rules as to what those intervals are.

“Fartlek and other types of tempo runs are a great way of getting your body used to small and frequent changes in pace, whether that be during hilly terrain or because you’re struggling during a particular section of the race,” Nuffield Health’s personal training lead, Nuffield Health, previously said.

One paper found that six sessions of sprint interval training improved the pace of seasoned athletes.

This doesn’t strictly have to be Fartlek training; it can be something like “Jeffing”, or the “run-walk-run” method, too.

2) Follow the 80/20 rule

According to Angela Ruskin University, “elite runners spend around 80% of their time training at what’s termed zone 2 running – a running pace which raises your heart rate, but is still slow enough that you can hold a conversation”.

Only about 20% of the time is spent at race pace, they added.

Zone 2 training happens below the lactate threshold, which means your muscles don’t get as tired after long distances.

That means you can build up a better aerobic base, which can really help you run faster for longer.

3) Try a “pyramid” running plan and get your miles in

One paper, which looked at 119,452 marathon runners in the 16 weeks preceding their races, found that “The fastest runners in this dataset featured large training volumes”.

In other words, the more kilometres under your belt, the faster you’ll probably run.

And among the fastest runners, a “pyramidal” running programme was more common.

That is another form of interval training which sees you ramp up from shorter, faster intervals to longer, slower parts, and then returning to smaller, speedier runs again at the end.

4) Don’t neglect strength training

A meta-analysis of 31 studies found that “strength training with high loads, plyometric training, and a combination of strength training methods may improve running economy in middle- and long-distance runners”.

And the better your running economy, the faster and longer you’ll be able to go.

But in this research, high-load strength training – working with heavy weights – might be especially helpful for those with a high VO2 max and faster running speeds.

5) Try plyometrics

Plyometrics, or exercises which lengthen, then rapidly shorten, your muscles, have been linked to improved explosive power.

One paper found that three plyometric sessions a week can reduce the “cost of running” (or energy used running) in athletes by about 6%. And another found that it increases stride length, too; both of which can improve your pace.

You’re Probably Not Asking Your Younger Relatives These Questions – But You Should

Baby boomers and Gen-Xers, we know younger generations are giving you a hard time these days. Your millennial and Gen Z relatives don’t always understand where you’re coming from or what you’ve experienced, and their stereotypes about your generation may seem undeserved.

If you’re craving deeper relationships with your younger relatives, one powerful way to bridge the gap is to ask thoughtful questions to get to know what matters to them and how you can best show up for them. Questions like these can open up a more fulfilling way of relating to each other.

We asked three experts on family dynamics to suggest meaningful questions to ask younger relatives, which they’ll deeply appreciate. And they may lead to you learning some important things about your loved ones. Win-win.

1. “How are things going?”

It may seem obvious, but asking this question in a way that shows you truly care about the answer can help your loved one open up.

“Family members tend to assume they know everything about one another,” Everett Uhl, a licensed marriage and family therapist, told HuffPost. “Asking open-ended questions encourages detailed responses rather than a yes/no or simple (good, fine) answer.”

Engaged listening will make all the difference in how the conversation goes. “If one continues to listen, stays curious and makes neutral statements (‘I support your position here; I totally agree with you; you are making total sense’), there is opportunity for continued dialogue with depth,” Uhl said.

“This benefits both parent and child as there will be deeper understanding between generations and each will understand the other’s inner world more.”

Family members might assume more about one another than they should — but asking questions and directly sharing can benefit everyone.

2. “Where do you see yourself in three years?”

Your younger relatives are in a different phase of their lives, which means that their days are very different, as are their goals for the short and long term. So asking about their hopes for the future can really help you understand where they’re coming from and figure out how you can support them no matter what stage they’re at.

“This question allows you as the parent to really see and be with your child in their life stage and understand what is important to them,” Uhl said. “This can lead to a back and forth about the life stage the adult child is in and if they are interested in moving to the next one, or if they are happy staying where they are a little longer.”

This question can replace more intrusive ones, such as “When are you getting married?” or “When are you having kids?” with empathy and curiosity. “This open-ended question lets the adult child share their wants, hopes and dreams about the future without the burden of pressure to be in a life stage by a certain age,” Uhl said.

3. “What does support look like to you right now?”

All three experts suggested you ask your younger relatives some version of this question – it’s that important for a thriving intergenerational relationship.

“This question does something quietly radical: It assumes that support is wanted and that the older relative is willing to provide it in whatever form is actually useful, not just the one they’re most comfortable with,” Saba Harouni Lurie, marriage and family therapist and founder of Take Root Therapy, told HuffPost.

“By asking rather than assuming, the older relative opens the door for the younger relative to be explicit, which is itself a form of respect. And for younger generations who have often felt like their needs were either invisible or inconvenient, simply being asked can be meaningful before a word of the answer is even spoken,” she continued.

Whatever the answer is – whether it be financial or emotional support or something else entirely – try your best to be open to it and to find ways to provide that support in a way that works for both of you.

4. “What am I missing?”

This is a winning question because it invites your child or younger relative to share what has perhaps felt difficult in your relationship or simply what’s important to them in life right now, and it demonstrates that you’re willing to look at your “blind spots” (because we all have them), said Harouni Lurie.

“The conversation that follows might surface moments the younger relative felt misunderstood or hurt and never knew how to bring up,” she added. “Or, it might open into bigger territory: the political climate, evolving values, the ways the world has changed in ways that aren’t always visible from the outside.”

Your family member will be grateful for your curiosity and open-mindedness.

Intentional open-minded conversations can deepen your relationships over time.

5. “Is there an expectation you feel I have of you that is weighing you down that I can release you from?”

We all grow up in families that have specific expectations of us in one way or another, whether these are explicit or implicit. Depending on our individual personalities and trajectories, though, some of these expectations can start to feel heavy – even if it’s totally unintentional.

“Expectations are the dirty word in parenting adult children,” said Catherine Hickem, a licensed clinical social worker. “They ruin relationships, damage trust, hurt a child’s self-worth, and place a burden on them that is not theirs to carry. They can put a child in the position of choosing between keeping peace with their parents or fulfilling their own needs, dreams, and desires.”

Knowing this, you likely want to help free your relative from any inadvertent expectations they may be living with, which is where this question comes in. When you ask, try your best to avoid getting defensive and listen with an open heart.

6. “Is there anything from our family’s history you want to understand better?”

We are all shaped by our family histories in big ways, and chances are your younger relatives have many questions about the values, events and traumas that have made up the generations before them.

“Younger relatives are often deeply curious about, and are being shaped by, family history that they were shielded from or handed down in incomplete or distorted form,” Harouni Lurie said. “Asking this question signals something important: that the older relative is willing to be honest, even about the hard things.”

Where previous generations might have preferred to leave the past in the past, younger generations are often highly introspective and want to better understand their family history.

“And with this question, the older relative becomes someone who wants to reckon with the past rather than guard a particular version of it,” Harouni Lurie added.

7. “What evidence do you need from me to know that I love you unconditionally?”

You love your children (or nephews or nieces, etc.). For you, that’s a given. But for them, they may need more hard proof than you think.

“Listen carefully to how your child responds to this question. Do you notice hesitancy? Defensiveness? Nervous laughter?” Hickem said. “Whatever their response, reinforce that nothing could change your love for them. But let me caution you on this: Do not say this if you are not certain you mean it. It is better to leave this question alone than to offer words you cannot stand behind.”

8. “Do you know what I really like about you?”

Loving your child or younger relative is one thing, but liking them for who they are is another.

“This may sound elementary, but when people are asked what their parents like about them, there is often a puzzled look or a joking response like, ‘I was the kid who didn’t keep them awake at night,’” Hickem said.

Being able to share the things you love and like about one another in an earnest, open way can be a powerful way to make your loved one feel seen and valued.

When asking this question, “parents should have a list ready in both their head and their heart of what they genuinely like about their child,” Hickem said. “Even if you have to reach back into childhood or adolescence to remember qualities you may not see clearly right now, look for the unique features that make them who they are.”

Asking this question and engaging in the conversation that ensues can help your loved one feel seen and valued, which in turn will naturally deepen your relationship.

9. “Is there any fear connected to our differences that we need to talk about?”

The socio-political climate today creates a huge rift between older and younger generations, something that has a significant effect on families. “We no longer know how to disagree without taking it personally or making the other person wrong or bad,” Hickem said.

Asking whether these differences between you and your younger relative cause them any fear gives “a parent the opportunity to clarify the difference between disagreeing about social issues, political concerns, or personal values and loving their child for who they are,” according to Hickem. “The relationship always matters more than the issue.”

Disagreeing on particular issues can feel really difficult, but it doesn’t mean you can’t have a healthy relationship that also includes disagreement. “Respect, compassion, sincere curiosity, and love can bridge differences,” Hickem said. “Parents may need to say, ‘I may not understand how you landed where you did, but I know you, I respect you, and I trust that you take these things seriously.’”

10. “How do you think we could have more fun at family gatherings?”

Many people end up dreading family gatherings because of their complex relational dynamics, but it doesn’t have to be that way. In fact, why have family gatherings at all if the guests don’t enjoy them? This question can encourage some beautiful dialogue about how to make family get-togethers occasions everyone looks forward to.

“We might not be able to take a family trip to Disney World anymore, but creating quality time and fun memories matters,” Uhl said. “This could allow for flexibility around who hosts during the holidays, roles that members play and/or contributions that family members provide. Sharing what would improve the overall experience or motivate family members to have more quality time together can strengthen the connection between generations.”

Trump Calls On UK And Allies To Send Ships To Hormuz After Days Of Sulking

Donald Trump has called on allies including the UK to send ships to the strait of Hormuz amid Iran’s attempts to effectively close the major shipping lane.

The waterway, which sits at the south of Iran, transports a fifth of the world’s oil supply.

Tehran has been targeting any ships which use Hormuz as its war against the US and Israel escalates, meaning the price of oil has started to skyrocket and the global economy is showing signs of strain.

Initially Trump said the hike in the price of oil was a “small price to pay”.

But in a new post on TruthSocial, he wrote: “Hopefully China, France, Japan, South Korea, the UK and others that are affected by this artificial constraint, will send Ships to the area so that the Hormuz Strait will no longer be a threat by a Nation that has been totally decapitated.”

According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations, 16 British ships have been operating around Hormuz, the Arabia Gulf and the Gulf of Oman since the war began a fortnight ago.

Despite claiming the US has destroyed “100% of Iran’s military capability” in his post, Trump also suggested Tehran could easily still “send a drone or two, drop a mine, or deliver a close range missile”.

But Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei promised to continue obstructing the strait on Thursday and Israel claims to it have detected new attacks from Iran over the weekend.

The president’s request for help follows a turbulent period in relations with the UK.

Just six days ago, Trump accused Keir Starmer of seeking to “join wars after we’ve already won”.

He also claimed the US did not need Britain to send two aircraft carriers to the Middle East, after alleging that Downing Street was considering it.

The White House has been fuming over Starmer’s refusal to allow the US to use British military bases to initiate pre-emptive attacks against Iran.

Starmer has since allowed Trump to use UK military sites for “limited and defensive” strikes, but the president publicly criticised Downing Street for not granting his first request.

If you’re a gardener, chances are you have a tense relationship with slugs.

Even though only nine of the 44 species in the UK actually eat your veggies. , and while they’re key to feeding our dwindling bird population, it can be hard to give unwanted visitors grace if they’re making your garden suffer.

Still, there are lots of reasons – like the fact that biodiverse gardens fare better – not to kill them. Some turn to repellants over pesticides, some of which are illegal in the UK anyway.

That can include placing “barriers,” like crushed eggshells, around your plants. But that might not work.

There’s not much evidence to suggest eggshells repel slugs

The idea is simple: when you place crushed eggshells on the ground, the theory goes, it makes an uncomfortable carpet for slugs.

So, they turn away from your budding blooms rather than face the sharp, stabbing sensations of crawling over broken shells.

But McGill University’s (MU) Office for Science and Society, as well as the staff at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) put that theory to the test, and both of them found the same thing.

The MU team placed crushed eggshells around some lettuce (which slugs love), and found it didn’t stop them at all.

And the RHS research, which took place over six weeks, found that plants “protected” by crushed eggshells didn’t fare any better than those with the smashed-up shells.

Side note – in the RHS investigation, no “barrier” methods, including copper tape, pine bark mulch, sharp horticultural grit, and wool pellets, worked.

So, how should I keep slugs away from my garden?

Speaking to HuffPost UK previously, the RHS’ senior wildlife specialist, Helen Bostock, said: “A vibrant garden ecosystem is one that requires [fewer] inputs from gardeners,” including sprays, because “natural predators” will help yo manage slugs, aphids, snails, and more.

So, trying to attract more birds to your garden can be a great first step.

And when you water your garden matters, too.

In one study, researchers found that watering your garden in the morning, rather than later on, is “as good as metaldehyde pellets” for keeping slugs away (metaldehyde pellets were banned in the UK in 2022).

Ferric phosphate pellets are still allowed, but, the RHS said, “slug pellets (even organic ones) have been shown to have negative effects on wildlife in the garden”.

Nigel Farage has not had an easy few days.

Fresh from Reform’s loss to the Greens in the Gorton and Denton by-election, the party waded head-first into debates around the UK’s involvement – or lack thereof – in Donald Trump’s war against Iran.

The party leader initially insisted Britain should “do all we can” to support the operation, saying: “The gloves need to come off, we need to accept that we are part of this with the Americans and the Israelis.”

Some senior party members, like his deputy Richard Tice and Reform mayor of Greater Lincolnshire Andrea Jenkyns, quickly backed him.

But top Tory defector Robert Jenrick, now Reform’s Treasury spokesperson, said it was not necessary for Britain to join the bombing – exposing clear splits in the party’s position.

Then, in a major U-turn on Tuesday, Farage told reporters: “If we can’t even defend Cyprus, let’s not get ourselves involved in another foreign war.”

Farage’s sudden change of heart followed a spike in global oil prices, sparking fears of higher mortgage rates, petrol prices and inflation.

Polls indicated a majority (59%) of Brits did not support joining the war, either.

During the same press conference, Farage also hit out at Sky News’ Beth Rigby, after she pointed out that Reform councils have not delivered on their promise to cut council tax.

He angrily shouted: “Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong! Never once in the county campaign, including here in Derbyshire, did I ever say we would cut council tax.”

Farage insisted that Reform’s “national literature” called for an overall cut to taxes, not to council taxes.

And on Friday, he adopted a more defeatist tone, saying he wished his party “hadn’t bothered” to take minority control of the bankrupt Worcestershire Council Council.

Reform had to hike council tax by almost 9% in the area, one of the largest increases in the area’s history, to balance the books.

To rub salt in the wound, just seven days ago, Labour beat Reform with its first council by-election gain in almost a year in Durham County Council.

Farage somehow found time to fight with pollsters, too.

He attacked YouGov after the company’s surveys suggested his party had lower public support compared to other polls.

He claimed it is “plainly deceptive” that more is not known about their methods and called for transparency around modelling assumptions.

It’s worth noting that YouGov’s latest poll put the party on 23%, still four percentage points above the Conservatives.

More In Common’s director Luke Tryl called the attacks on YouGov “unwarranted and unfair”.

Writing on X, he said: “They’re a gold standard in our business, have a great track record and the rest of the industry learns so much from them. Sometimes pollsters get different results from each other, that’s a good thing [and] shows we aren’t herding!”

When approached by HuffPost UK, Reform rebuffed claims this week has been stressful, pointing out they are polling at 30% nationally according to More In Common.

A source pointed out they had three sold out rallies this week with thousands of attendees and deployed the “lowest council tax rises in the country” with an average of 4.32%.

The party claimed it had managed to get greater transparency from YouGov, too.

But questions remain around the way Farage has reacted to scrutiny this week,

Savanta’s political director, Chris Hopkins, told HuffPost UK that Farage was reading off “the Trumpian playbook” by “reacting with hostility to scrutiny and blaming everyone but himself for his party’s fall in momentum in the opinion polls”.

The pollster added: “This week he’s even turned his ire directly towards us pollsters where, not for the first time, he publicly challenges polling figures that he doesn’t seem to like.”

Current predictions suggest Reform is on course to win the most seats when voters next head to the polls, though it is still expected to be shy of an overall majority.

Farage will therefore be under a microscope in the run-up to the next general election.

Hopkins said: “The longer Reform stay at the forefront of British politics, the greater the scrutiny on Farage will be, and if his temperament is being questioned now, years away from a general election, it’ll be interesting to see how he’ll react to supporter expectation and the bright lights of an election campaign.”

The pollster warned that there is also a “general sentiment” that Reform may have peaked after more than a year leading the polls.

“The major challenge for Farage and his party will be to still be sitting atop of the pile when the music stops, especially when so much can change so quickly in British politics,” he said.

A Labour insider said it was clear that “Farage can’t deal with the pressure”.

They added: “The wheels have well and truly fallen off the bandwagon this week, the cracks are beginning to show.”

A Green Party source also said: “Reform were able to play on easy mode, presenting themselves as outsiders to a failing Labour government but the mask has slipped.”

It took years for Farage to assert himself within mainstream politics.

He has managed to hold a confident lead in the polls for more than a year, winning over voters on his promise to offer something different from the “establishment” parties.

But, with a general election expected to still be three years away, can the Reform leader keep his cool – and hold his growing party together – in that time?
