6 Dangerous Multicooker Mistakes, According To Food Safety Experts

If there is a time of year that begs for multicookers — Crockpots, air fryers and Instant Pots — it’s fall. The season is synonymous with slow cooker chilis and dips for football games, soups for cold days and batch-cooking meals for school lunches. And multicookers make it easy to do.

“They really are wonderful pieces of cooking equipment that we need to keep properly maintained as well as properly cleaned,” said Angela Anandappa, the CEO and founding executive director of Alliance for Advanced Sanitation.

When multicookers aren’t used properly, they can create cleanliness and health issues, food experts say. In fact, on the popular television show “This Is Us,” a slow cooker malfunctioned and set the family’s home on fire, scaring many avid users of the appliance.

While fires aren’t the No. 1 concern of the food safety experts we spoke to, there are other problems that could cause you trouble, and specific behaviors and habits that contribute to those problems. Here’s what they are:

Not Checking The Temperature Of Meat

“I am primarily concerned about home cooks that will just trust that a given recipe is sufficient for food safety without checking food internal temperatures (of meats specifically) at the end of cooking,” Donald Schaffner, the department chair and extension specialist in food science at Rutgers University, told HuffPost.

Even after cooking for hours, meat still may not be at the temperature necessary for a safe meal.

Schaffner suggests that you use a tip-sensitive digital meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of your meat before you start eating.

You can find the proper cooking temperatures for food on the USDA website, he said.

Eating undercooked meat is the most dangerous mistake that can occur when you prepare food with a slow cooker, said Kali Kniel, the associate chair of the Department of Animal and Food Sciences at the University of Delaware.

“If chicken is undercooked, then there is a potential risk of a person getting sick from salmonella,” Kniel told HuffPost.

Kniel added that the food temperature danger zone — from 40 degrees to 140 degrees Fahrenheit — should always be avoided. In this range, “bacteria are likely to multiply,” she said.

“If foods are not kept hot, then bacteria like [staphylococcus] aureus, which can be on human hands, can grow in the food product and then produce a toxin that can be ingested with the food and make people sick,” Kniel said.

Washing your hands before cooking or eating can be one way to reduce this risk, she said.

Not Following The Machine’s Rules

How many times have you gotten a new gadget and immediately cast aside the direction booklet? Probably too many to count.

In the case of multicookers, it’s crucial that you read and follow the directions every time you use them, according to Kniel.

It is important to [use] your machine according to instructions of the machine. If you don’t have the instructions that came with the appliance, look for the guide online,” Kniel said.

This is especially true for the Instant Pot (or other brands of electric pressure cookers), she said.

“With an Instant Pot … foods are cooked at high temperatures under pressure. It is important that the [Instant Pot] be allowed to reach temperature under pressure and then when finished cooking, the [Instant Pot] must be vented properly,” Kniel said.

If the Instant Pot isn’t properly vented, it can be dangerous, she noted. In some instances, electric pressure cookers have exploded, and the hot steam can burn your skin if you hover over it.

It’s also important to follow any food or liquid limits in your appliance’s manual, said Trevor Craig, the corporate director of technical training and consulting at Microbac Laboratories.

“Sometimes I see people overfill air fryers because of a party [and] they’re trying to make a lot of food at once … you can actually affect the way it cooks, so [your] food might not be cooked all the way through,” Craig said.

This again highlights the importance of using a meat thermometer before chowing down.

Not Following Legit Recipes

Beyond following the machine’s manual, it’s important to follow recommended recipes, too.

“One of the things that happens is that if you don’t follow those recommended instructions and you try to be creative, you may make a change that you didn’t know is going to be hazardous to you,” Anandappa said.

Specifically, a lot of people turn to social media for recipes, which isn’t always a great idea for machines that require specific steps.

“Sometimes they are recommending things that aren’t safe for people — one of those things is cooking time and temperature,” Anandappa said.

In other words, if you cut the cook time down, you could end up with a meal that’s raw in the middle. Or, if you put too many items in your multicooker, you could change what is needed for the machine to reach the necessary temperature when it’s turned on.

So be sure to use recipes vetted by professionals to ensure you’re not eating something that is undercooked or using your machine in an unsafe way. You can look at your multicooker’s brand website for recipes; Instant Pot has a range of recipes online, and Ninja has a variety of air fryer recipes on its site. Or visit trusted resources like Bon Appétit or Real Simple.

Using Plastic Bags In The Pot

Anandappa said she would also warn about “plastic bags that can be put into various types of cookers.”

This is specifically true for slow cookers, she said.

“Some of these plastic bags are not supposed to be used for very long, but people are using them, particularly in things like Crockpot cooking, for 8, 10, 12 hours sometimes,” Anandappa said.

Why is it dangerous? According to Anandappa, the plastic can migrate into the food, “which is not a safe thing.”

There is some debate surrounding the safety of plastic slow cooker liners, according to EatingWell, which points to the potential additives in these products, while TastingTable points to the environmental impact of single-use plastics. If you do use a plastic liner, it’s important that you use liners that are FDA-approved, according to EatingWell.

Additionally, Craig said, if you do use a plastic liner, you should still wash your slow cooker.

“Those liners aren’t going to prevent any bacteria from getting underneath it, or tiny food particles,” Craig said.

This is true even if your multicooker looks totally clean.

“You can’t see bacteria, [and] you might not be able to see all the food particles — clean it anyway,” Craig added.

Not Using Appropriate Utensils

According to Craig, if you’re serving food for a multicooker at a gathering, it’s important to have a designated utensil for folks to use. It’s not safe to have people dipping in various spoons and forks.

“You’re just leading to an area where you’re going to introduce cross-contamination, and that’s a big concern,” Craig said.

It’s particularly concerning if someone has an allergy to another food that’s being served, or if someone with a cold puts their dirty spoon in a big serving of crock pot chilli.

If you’re using a cooker with a nonstick lining, you should also be careful not to scratch the inner pot with a metal appliance. Take care to use food-safe utensils that won’t scratch the nonstick liner, remnants of which could end up in your food.

Not Cleaning Your Appliance

You wouldn’t put a pot away without properly cleaning it first, and the same goes for multicookers.

“[Make] sure that you treat these as items that you have to clean regularly. You wouldn’t reuse the same utensil over and over and over again without cleaning it,” Craig said, “but, for some reason, when people use air fryers, they don’t want to clean up that basket.”

And, as mentioned above, having a liner in your slow cooker does not negate the need to wash it with soap and water.

“I’m a big proponent of making sure you have a clean kitchen. Treat it like you would want to see the inside of a restaurant,” Craig said.

Rhod Gilbert Announces Mammoth Comedy Tour After Undergoing Cancer Treatment

Comedian Rhod Gilbert has confirmed he’s embarking on an epic 100-date tour next year.

The Welsh comic disclosed last year that he had been diagnosed with stage-four cancer, and previously told The Guardian about how he was using “humour” to help him through his treatment.

It’s now been announced that Rhod will be hitting the road in January, for a tour that is due to span until November 2025, with more than 100 shows planned across the UK and Ireland.

After the year I’ve had, it’s wonderful to be alive and going back on the road,” he enthused. “I can’t wait to get back on stage and I’m ready to get way too personal about life’s recent ups and downs.

“When life gives you lemons, you have to squeeze them ’til the comedy juice flows, so prepare for some dark but funny s***.”

Rhod’s new show will be titled Rhod Gilbert & The Giant Grapefruit, with a post on his website explaining: “In his last show, The Book of John, Rhod was dealing with some pretty pungent life citrus, and an idiot called John. Little did he know that things were about to turn even more sour…

“But Rhod’s not bitter; he’s bouncing back and feeling remarkably zesty. Hilariously dark, passionate and way too personal, this is classic Gilbert, squeezing every last drop out of life’s latest curveballs… with a little help from an old adversary.

“This new live show sees Rhod back on stage doing what he does best. Candid, hilarious and uplifting; it’s a show about navigating the dark bits and turning life’s giant grapefruits into something approaching lemonade.”

The stand-up told The Guardian in January of this year: “When I get through this, the next show will be in a similar vein. The cancer is on my mind 24/7, but, when I’m well enough to write, I’m jotting down a few things. And there is humour in there, definitely.”

Revealing he’s “mad keen” to create his next stand-up show, Rhod added: “I’ve got a 250-page document of stuff that’s on the go.

“All my work has gone. My social life has gone. Everything has gone. Everything. It’s just me and this bloody cancer, really.”

Rhod is known for his appearances on shows like Mock The Week, Live At The Apollo and Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow.

After impressing during a guest spot on the panel show Never Mind The Buzzcocks, he took over as permanent host for its final series on the BBC in 2014, and later fronted Rhod Gilbert’s Growing Pains on Comedy Central.

Why Are Armed Metropolitan Police Officers Handing In Their Guns?

A row has erupted over the Metropolitan police after some officers turned in their firearm permits, meaning soldiers will now be drafted in to fill in the gaps.

The move – carried out by more than 100 of the 2,500 armed officers in the force – came after an officer was recently charged with the murder of Chris Kaba, an unarmed 24-year-old who died last September.

The debate has now escalated to include home secretary Suella Braverman, too.

Here’s what you need to know.

Why have officers handed in their firearm permits?

On September 5, 2022, Kaba was shot by a bullet – which went through the car windscreen – issued by a Met Police officer. Kaba died in hospital the next day.

Later reports revealed Kaba was driving an Audi which did not belong to him, and which had been connected to a gun incident the day before.

The police officer involved was suspended from duty, charged with murder and granted bail last week. Their details have been kept anonymous.

A plea and trial preparation hearing is listed for December 1, with a possible trial date to take place next September.

Some officers in the Met are now worried about how the charging of their colleague might impact them which is why they’ve decided to hand in their gun permits, according to the country’s largest police force.

The Met said: “A number of officers have taken the decision to step back from armed duties while they consider their position.”

In an update on Monday, it added that some officers returned to duties in the last 24 hours.

For context, the London Assembly said that in April, there were 2,595 authorised firearm officers in the Met, down from 2,841 in 2018.

Home Office stats say between March 2022 and March 2023, the Met Police took part in 18,257 firearm operations – that’s a third of all firearm operations recorded in the UK.

However, only 10 of these incidents included an officer opening fire at a person.

What has this got to do with the Army?

The Ministry of Defence received a Military Aid to the Civil Authorities request from the Home Office to send in Army personnel to fill in the gaps.

This is not unprecedented – soldiers stepped in to help with civil missions at the height of the Covid pandemic, and during paramedics’ strikes last year.

The Home Office asked the MoD to provide “routine counter-terrorism contingency support to the Metropolitan Police, should it be needed”.

The Met explained: “To ensure that we can continue to keep the public safe and respond to any eventualities, from Saturday evening Met firearms officers will be supported by a limited number of armed officers from other UK forces.”

What has Suella Braverman said?

Home Secretary Suella Braverman has spoken up in support of the police officers.

Home secretary Suella Braverman spoke out about the case on Sunday, saying there would be a review into armed policing, and that the officers have her “full backing”.

“They mustn’t fear ending up in the dock for carrying out their duties,” she claimed. “Officers risking their lives to keep us safe have my full backing and I will do everything in my power to support them. I will do everything in my power to support them.”

However, this statement, issued on X (formerly Twitter) has been controversial, because this is a comment on an active murder trial.

Doughty Street Chambers’ barrister, Adam Wagner, reposted her comment and said: “I think this series of tweets is inappropriate in the context of a live criminal case where an officer has been charged.

“It gives the clear impression, given the image in the linked article, that the Home Secretary is expressing an opinion on the Chris Kaba case.”

The i’s Ian Dunt told Sky News that he was “startled” by Braverman’s intervention, too.

He said journalists are told to be really careful when there’s live court proceedings, never mind cabinet ministers.

He claimed: “That’s a completely unjustifiable intervention by the home secretary and something we should be a little more alarmed about.”

How has the Met responded?

Braverman’s review has been welcomed by Met chief commissioner Sir Mark Rowley.

He said while it was correct they were held to the “highest standards”, the current system undermines his officers, as they end up being investigated for “safely pursuing suspects” and they therefore needed more legal protection.

He said he would make “no comment” on any ongoing legal matter but said these issues “go back further” than the Kaba case.

He said: “Officers need sufficient legal protection to enable them to do their job and keep the public safe, and the confidence that it will be applied consistently and without fear or favour.”

However, he acknowledged that when officers act improperly, the system “needs to move swiftly” rather than “tying itself in knots pursuing good officers through multiple legal processes”.

Rowley has promised repeatedly to reform the force since getting into the role, and has vowed to robustly remove rogue officers in the Met.

It comes after years of scrutiny towards the force. A review released only in March this year called for immediate change or for the force to be broken up, claiming it was institutionally racist, misogynistic and homophobic.

Can Somatic Shaking Help You Get Rid Of Your Anxiety?

“I swear to you, if you just did this one thing every day that takes less than five minutes, in three months from now, you’d be a completely different person.” “Okay,” I thought. “I’m listening.”

I was scrolling on TikTok one night when I came across a video by Emma Marschall, a holistic healing expert.

She was talking about the concept of somatic shaking: something that’s said to help release trauma, stress and anxiety.

“Each morning when you wake up, or whenever you feel like you need it you are going to do a somatic shaking practice,” she explains.

But what does somatic mean? Somatic therapy is a treatment that aims to treat mental and emotional conditions, like PTSD and anxiety, through the connections to mind and body, like grounding techniques.

“Put on one or two of your favourite songs that get you going, get you hype,” explains Marschall. “Plant your two feet on the ground (bonus points if you’re outside and get some negative electrons from the earth!) and keep them grounded the entire time.

Then all you have to do is… shake it out.

“Shake. Get that energy out,” she says.

But how can simply shaking your body help you feel less anxious?

When our bodies are stressed, we go into ‘fight or flight’ mode — when, back in the day, our cave people selves would have had to fight animals or tribes to survive, this mechanism would have come in very handy.

But now, our fight or flight mode can be triggered from a passive aggressive work meeting, or someone aggressively staring at us on the tube. When we’re stuck in one place and feel trapped, our bodies can store up this adrenaline and cortisol and cause us to experience anxiety, stress and mental overwhelm.

According to Dr Peter Levine, shaking can help release muscular tension, as well as burn this excess adrenaline which is triggered when we’re living in fight or flight mode when we’re constantly stressed, and calm the nervous system to its neutral state.

Animals have been known to shake to help regulate their systems. Think of a dog stretching and shaking after they get up, or when they’re scared. Some commented on Marschall’s video, saying they’ve noticed this themselves: “Dogs shake to rid themselves of anxiety so this actually makes sense,” commented one user.

And at the very least, a bedroom dance party can be a lot of fun. Try it tonight!

Andy Burnham Says Ministers Are Treating People In The North ‘Like Second Class Citizens’

Andy Burnham has accused ministers of treating people in the north of England “like second class citizens” amid mounting speculation that the next phase of HS2 will be scrapped.

The Manchester mayor launched a furious attack on the government as Rishi Sunak ponders whether to axe the Birmingham to Manchester leg of the rail project.

His comments came after former transport secretary Grant Shapps repeatedly refused to confirm that the high-speed line will be completed in full.

Speaking on Sky News, Burnham furiously said: “Why is it that people in the north are always forced to choose – you can have this or you can have that, but you can’t have everything?

“London never has to choose between a north-south line or an east-west line and good public transport within the city.

“Why are we always treated as second-class citizens when it comes to transport?

“This is the parliament who said they would level us up. If they leave a situation where the southern half of the country is connected by modern high speed lines and the north of England is left with Victorian infrastructure, that is a recipe for the north-south divide to become a north-south chasm.”

Burnham said the abandonment of the HS2 leg would be the “desperate act of a dying government”.

Around £20 billion of taxpayers money has already been spent on the project, which was meant to cost £33 billion in total.

However, repeated delays and soaring inflation mean there are fears the final bill could be more than £100 billion.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has warned that the cost of the project is at risk of getting “totally out of control”, fuelling speculation that plans to extend it to Manchester will be scrapped.

However, Boris Johnson has said that would leave a “mutilated” rail line and has urged the government to commit to the project.

Andy Street, the Tory mayor of the West Midlands, has also called on Sunak to complete the project, while business leaders have insisted scrapping it would be disastrous for the economy.

‘You’re Answering A Different Question’: Grant Shapps Clashes With Trevor Phillips Over HS2

The defence secretary repeatedly failed to say whether the next phase of the multi-billion pound project will go ahead.

Speculation is mounting that the government will axe plans to extend the rail line from Manchester to Birmingham.

Appearing on Sky News this morning, Shapps was asked whether or not he had promised businesses HS2 would go ahead as planned while he was transport secretary.

Phillips said: “Did you personally encourage people to invest on the basis that it was to run from central London to Manchester?”

Shapps began to say: “We’ve invested…”

But Phillips told him: “You’re answering a different question.

“I’m asking you when you talked to businesses as transport secretary, did you say to them, ’look, it’s worth investing in the north in this way because there will be HS2. Did you?”

But Shapps failed to answer and instead repeated that “the government is committed to improving rail infrastructure, particularly in the north”.

He added: “Forgive me, Trevor. I think your viewers understand that I’m not here today to deliver the budget on your excellent programme.

“I’m here to talk about actually things that I can inform you about which is for example, in my role as defence secretary and our work in Ukraine.”

Twitter Users Raise A Stink After Marjorie Taylor Greene Calls Biden An ‘Old Fart’

Republcian Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene called Joe Biden an “old fart”, but the insult whiffed with many social media users.

On Friday, the president announced the creation of the Office of Gun Violence Prevention within the White House and later tweeted that “it’s time to again ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.”

He added: “If members of Congress refuse to act, then we need to elect new members of Congress who will act.”

That post apparently had Greene seeing red and she responded by tweeting back, “Whatever you old fart. We are electing a new President. Turning 45 into 47.”

Greene may have thought the “old fart” comment was a truth bomb, but many users of X, formerly known as Twitter, raised a stink, especially since she’s been griping recently about the lack of “society’s standards that set etiquette and respect for our institutions.”

As a result, she was thoroughly mocked.

Greene has been harping on civility for everyone else but her for a while now.

On Monday, after she criticised Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman for wearing a hoodie on the Senate floor, he pointed out that there are other forms of decorum. He reminded her of when she displayed nude images of Hunter Biden during a House hearing.

Back in May, Greene found out how much her Democratic colleagues respect her desire for decorum when they raucously laughed at her after she told them, “Members are reminded to abide by decorum of the House,” she said, only to spark raucous laughter.

The 1 Thing More People Wish They Knew About Before Giving Birth

When it comes to birth, we tend to focus on the prize. Having a child emerge from your body is, obviously, the main event. It’s followed by delivering the placenta, sometimes referred to as the “afterbirth.” Luckily, this part is usually pretty quick and painless — you may barely register that it’s even happening.

But in the hours and days that follow, your body will experience another minor milestone: the first postpartum poop. If you’re lucky, this will also be fast and forgotten as soon as you flush. However, given what your body has been through, the buildup to this event can be anxiety-inducing.

Here’s what you need to know, as well as some tips to ease discomfort.

How this poop is different

There are a number of factors that may make this particular trip to the bathroom feel more significant.

First, you may not have had a bowel movement in a while. “If you had a long induction or a long labor, and you haven’t eaten in a long time, you probably don’t have a lot that needs to come out. It may take several days,” Dr. Andrea Braden, an OB-GYN who practices in Georgia, told HuffPost.

Constipation may also be a side effect of pain medications, fluctuating hormones, or simply your own hesitation.

If you’ve had a cesarean section or an assisted delivery (via vacuum or forceps), or you’ve had a tear or episiotomy repaired with stitches, you may be in pain from that, and understandably reluctant to do anything that might aggravate your discomfort. But holding in your stool can make things worse.

“Some people will actually try to hold it in and not have a bowel movement, which causes constipation,” Braden said.

Haemorrhoids, which are common during this time, can also cause pain when you go to the bathroom.

While this is all uncomfortable, it isn’t unexpected.

“In my 26 years of experience, at least 90% of my clients have had trouble using the restroom after birth,” Kali King, a doula in Virginia, told HuffPost.

Tips for a smooth move

Stool softeners or laxatives can help you get that first bowel movement out without straining, which you’ll want to avoid if you ended up with stitches after your delivery.

“The goal would be to not push when you have a bowel movement,” Braden said. “You want it to come out very easily, because the pushing can cause a lot more pain and pressure on the incision sites, no matter where the incision is.”

King recommended light exercise or abdominal massage, as well as a squat position to help get things moving more easily.

Lori Bregman, a doula in Los Angeles, noted that staying hydrated is another way to prevent constipation. If you’re looking for something other than water, she recommends coconut water, bone broth and electrolyte drinks (like sports drinks). Fibre-rich foods like fruits and vegetables help, too.

A tablespoon of coconut oil can act as a natural stool softener, Bregman said, and a foot stool such as a Squatty Potty can help you get into a comfortable position while you’re on the toilet.

You’ll also be given a peri-bottle, a little plastic bottle that you can use to squirt water on your nether regions to clean yourself after going to the bathroom. This is much more comfortable than dry toilet paper, particularly if you had stitches in that area.

Haemorrhoid help

Haemorrhoids are “swollen blood vessels in the rectal area that develop from the pressure [of] your growing uterus and increased blood flow. They can be itchy and painful,” Bregman said.

Unfortunately, if you have them at the end of a pregnancy, delivery can exacerbate the problem. “They are extremely common during pregnancy and can get a lot worse especially if you pushed for a long time,” Braden explained.

Studies show that about 40% of people who give birth suffer from hemorrhoids before, during or following delivery. Pushing for longer than 20 minutes is associated with haemorrhoids, as are assisted deliveries (forceps or vacuum). Your provider may mention that you have them when they examine you after delivery, and you can also ask them directly.

The good news is that haemorrhoids “usually resolve on their own,” King said.

There are many things you can do to reduce the discomfort of hemorrhoids. Bregman recommends:

  • chilled or frozen witch hazel pads with drops of vitamin E oil
  • frozen leaf of an aloe vera plant
  • sitting on a donut pillow
  • using a footstool while on the toilet
  • sitz baths
  • ice
  • comfrey root ointment
  • acupuncture

When to call the doctor

Hemorrhoids can cause bleeding in the rectal area, but if you don’t have them, or you’re uncertain, bloody stool is definitely something to report to your health care provider.

As far as constipation, it’s probably time to call the doctor “if you haven’t had a bowel movement in a week and you’re feeling quite constipated,” Braden said.

Other symptoms that you’d want to report to your provider include “pain, swelling not going away, infection, weird smell, lots of bleeding and an intuitive feeling that something doesn’t feel right — always trust and follow that,” Bregman said.

King recommends that you not allow your provider “to downplay your symptoms.” If you feel that this is happening, you can look for a second opinion.

11 Behind-The-Scenes Secrets You Didn’t Know About Love Is Blind

Little did we know when Love Is Blind first landed on our screens back in February 2020, that its concept of finding romance while in isolation would foreshadow the virtual dating trend that came about during lockdown.

Fast-forward three years, and the Netflix reality show is now one of the most popular dating formats on TV, with its fifth season having just launched on the streaming platform.

As we celebrate its return – and look forward the forthcoming UK version that is currently in the works – here are 11 well-kept secrets that might come as a surprise to even the biggest Love Is Blind fans…

Who pays for those engagement rings?

Chris Coelen – who created and produced Love Is Blind – told Variety that when it comes to rings, male contestants are given a choice of “10 or 12 different styles and colours”.

When Jackie from season four decided to keep her ring, despite breaking off her engagement with Marshall, she wrote on her Instagram: “As for the ring, Marshall did not pay for the ring, Love Is Blind paid for all the rings.”

However, other contestants brought rings to the pods with them that were passed down from their families, such as season two’s Kyle, who gave Shaina his mother’s engagement ring.

How far in advance is the show filmed?

There is a lengthy period between when the show is filmed and when it airs.

For example, speaking on his YouTube channel about the show, Cameron from season one said viewers regularly came up to his parents asking “Are you worried that Lauren is going to say no [to his proposal]?”

He added: “But they were already at the wedding a year and a half ago when it was filmed.”

Do all the couples make it on TV?

No, they do not.

During season one, the production team was shocked by the amount of engagements that occurred, and had to scale back due to budget and time restraints. Unfortunately, this meant two couples who got engaged in the pods didn’t make it on TV (although it’s worth pointing out that neither of them are together now).

The same thing happened when the second season saw two couples getting together, only for their stories not to make it onto the screen. In this case, both couples split before making it to the altar.

How are people cast for Love Is Blind?

Lexie from season one told Cosmopolitan: “I was contacted on Instagram about this new Netflix show, and it came at a time when I was just really fed up of dating.”

Is the show scripted?

Producer Chris Coelen has insisted the show is not scripted. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said: “As a producer, I was kind of nervous, like, is anybody actually gonna get engaged? Is anyone going to make it to the altar?”

Adding to this, season one’s Cameron said most of the conversations held on the show were spontaneous and organic, and that there were no scripts involved.

The only artificial thing he saw was when a producer held an iPad in the background urging him to ask a fellow contestant how his date went.

“I don’t see that as a big deal, that’s a question I would have asked anyways,” Cameron added.

Are contestants banned from posting their relationship status online until the show is completely aired?

While the contestants are on the show, they are not allowed phone or computer access. After filming is wrapped, they all seem to keep their relationship status private online until the show is completely aired.

Chris told the LA Times that there isn’t a mandate in place prohibiting them from posting their relationship update or singleton status. However, they are suggested to hold off from sharing clues.

“People are going to do what they’re going to do. But I think generally people buy into the idea that this is something that they do not want to spoil for the audience,” he said.

Are the pods soundproof?

In order to have private and romantic conversations, the pods are soundproof, and only the contestants on the dates can hear what is being said.

“Even if you’re yelling in one pod, you can’t hear it in another,” Chris told Netflix Tudum. He added, “They’re also each fitted with a glass roof and are tall enough — about 40 feet high — that contestants can look up and daydream.”

How long are the contestants actually in the pods for?

The contestants only have 10 days to find their future partner in the pods. Usually, these dates last around 15 minutes at a time.

However, when sparks do start flying, they can range from around three to four hours, like they did for Cameron and Lauren. Typically the contestants go around 20 dates during their time in the pods.

Speaking with Netflix Tudum, Chris describes the period as “10 days of 24/7 intensive therapy”.

“They’re trying to identify every single thing that might be important to talk about before they choose to marry someone,” he added.

How long does it typically take them to get engaged?

Season one’s Cameron said he proposed to future wife Lauren in just nine days. However, he noted that Netflix made it seem like only four days.

After couples are engaged, they then have 28 days to decide whether they want to tie the knot. Within this period, the lovebirds will go on a couples retreat, after which they are returned to the real world to see how they fit into each other’s lives.
