Here’s What Brits Think A First Date Should Cost

Drinking is a big part of dating culture. Most dates take place at bars or pubs because they’re the perfect place to meet and speak to someone. Additionally, you might be able to calm your first-date nerves with a drink or two – but the price of those drinks can rack up!

Brits spend almost £500 (£454) on first dates per year, according to credit card brand Aqua. This figure could be cut massively if you let go of the booze on your next dates. So much so, that 17% of those surveyed said they’re going to opt for cheaper coffee or lunch dates and 23% of British singles plan to stop dating completely!

When asked how much Brits believe should be spent on a first date, Aqua found that the average expected cost of a first date sits at £37.85.

However, it turns out that men have much higher expectations than women when it comes to first-date spending. The average response from men came in at £43.24, whereas the average response for women came in at £32.26, which is almost an £11 difference per date.

It appears that men are still quite traditional as only 15% of men believe the cost of a first date should be split equally. However, nearly 40% of women believe that the bill for a first date should be split equally.

But bills being at an all-time high, everyone is looking for ways to spend less money including dates.

Aqua has shared tips that will help singletons navigate their love life without worrying too much about their finances.

Have a movie night at home

This is probably one to do when you feel comfortable with the person you’re dating. So when you feel ready to welcome that special someone into your home, why not host your own movie night? With a few DVDs or a streaming subscription, you can recreate the magic of the cinema from the comfort of your own home without spending a load of money at the cinema.

Visit a free museum or gallery

Attending a free exhibition together is another great option as the only cost you need to cover is transport to and from the museum or gallery. The British Museum, The Tate Modern, and the National Gallery are a few London-based attractions offering free admission, but you’ll be able to find something to do wherever you’re based.

Find a local event to attend

There are plenty of free events like food markets, street fairs, or open mic nights advertised in local papers and on social media. More often than not, they’re free to attend and they provide a casual environment for you to get to know each other.

Go for a walk

With lighter evenings and longer days, it is now more pleasant to walk around outside – why not grab a coffee with your companion, go for a lovely woodland walk and enjoy the sunset? Better yet, make your coffee at home ‘to-go’ for a real budget-friendly date.

Kwasi Kwarteng Reveals What He Got ‘Wrong’ In His Mini-Budget

Kwasi Kwarteng has said what he got “wrong” in his mini-Budget that triggered market chaos and led to the downfall of Liz Truss’ government was not being “methodical” enough.

The former chancellor said his successor Jeremy Hunt had delivered a “good Budget” last week.

Hunt was appointed chancellor by Truss after she fired Kwarteng, her closest political ally, in a last ditch attempt to save her failing premiership.

Speaking to GB News on Sunday morning, Kwarteng said Hunt had “rightly perhaps” adopted a more “cautious” approach than he had.

“What we can’t do is pretend that last October didn’t happen, last September didn’t happen,” he said.

“I don’t understand what it means to be a Conservative if you don’t believe, ultimately, in lower taxes, broadly. That’s a strategic goal.

“There is a question about how you get there and there are different approaches.

“Now, I’d like to see things maybe done more quickly. But you do have to be methodical, you have to carry institutions with you, and I think that’s what they’re trying to do.”

He added: “That’s where I think I and Liz got it wrong. I think we should have had a more methodical and more process-driven way of getting to that strategic goal, which is lower taxes and incentivising economic activity.”

Kwarteng also acknowledged there was “too much” in his mini-Budget and it was “very bold” not to have Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) forecasts or measures on spending restraint at the same time.

He also said that suggesting more tax cuts could come in the aftermath of his statement “probably was a mistake”.

Kwarteng’s decision to tell BBC One’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme that even more taxes could be cut, shortly after he axed the 45p top rate, was widely seen to have been a big factor in spooking the markets.

Kate Forbes Has ‘Full Confidence’ In SNP Leadership Contest

SNP leadership candidate Kate Forbes has said she has “full confidence” in the integrity of the bitter campaign to succeed Nicola Sturgeon as first minister.

It came after Peter Murrell, who is Sturgeon’s husband, quit as the party’s chief executive, having served in the role for 20 years.

Murrell said he took responsibility after misleading information was briefed to the media over SNP’s membership numbers.

Earlier this week it emerged that the party had lost 30,000 members in just over a year.

On Thursday the party said membership as of February 15 this year was 72,186, having fallen from 103,884 in 2021.

This corroborated a story in the Sunday Mail in February about the party losing 30,000 members, something it had strongly denied at the time.

Earlier this week two of the candidates seeking to replace Sturgeon, Forbes and Ash Regan, raised concerns about the integrity of the election.

Forbes had called for an independent auditor to asses the leadership contest.

Health Secretary Humza Yousaf, widely viewed as the favourite for the top job among the party hierarchy, dismissed these as “baseless smears”.

Speaking to the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Forbes said she now did “have full confidence and trust in the process”.

The point I made around an independent auditor was to try and give as much
trust and confidence to those that were voting.

“It’s fairly standard common practice when it comes to election contests for there to be that third party independent auditing.

“And I would hope that we can get to the end of this contest knowing that the decisions that SNP members are taking when they vote is the decision that they truly want when it comes to leadership of the party.”

The leadership contest is due to conclude on March 27.

Taron Egerton Has His Say On Those James Bond Casting Rumours

Taron Egerton has ruled himself out of becoming the next James Bond, believing he’s not the “right choice” to play 007.

The Rocketman star is just one of the many names who has been linked to replacing Daniel Craig as the British spy in the iconic film franchise, but insists there have been “zero phone calls” about taking on the role.

Taron told the Daily Telegraph he thinks there are people better suited to Bond, explaining: “I don’t think I’m the right choice for it.

“You have to be consistently statuesque to be that guy. And that’s something that I am still striving for. I’ve always struggled with my weight.“
He added that Bond “is a bit like being a brand ambassador as well as being an actor”.

“That could be really fun in microcosm, but I’m sure I read that [producer] Barbara Broccoli said that it’s a 15-year commitment,” he said.

“It’s sort of irrelevant how I feel about it, anyway, because I can tell you there have been zero phone calls.”

No Time To Die, which was finally released in September 2021 after multiple Covid delays, served as Daniel’s final outing as James Bond.

He had been with the franchise since 2006, when he took the lead in Casino Royale.

The Stars Of Bake Off As Are Just As Excited About Alison Hammond’s New Role As The Rest Of Us

Alison’s new co-stars reacted to the announcement on a video she shared on social media.

Noel, who has hosted the show since it moved to Channel 4 from BBC One in 2018, said: “Congratulations and Welcome to the tent lovely !! We are gonna have an absolute blast together. I can’t wait. I’m buzzing. Two naughty kids together 🙂 x x x.x

“The bakers will love you,” he added.

Judge Prue Leith wrote: “Huge congratulations Alison, you will be magnificent and I can’t wait for your infectious laugh to be ringing through the tent.”

Fellow judge Paul Hollywood said: “See you on the tent. Welcome xx [sic].”

Alison was also flooded with congratulatory messages from other celebrity friends and fans.

Her This Morning co-star Holly Willoughby said: “This is the greatest news babe!!!! Congratulations and save me a slice!!!!”

Alexandra Burke added: “Forever proud of you!!!!!! Congrats darling xx.”

Alison said she was “absolutely thrilled” to be joining the team.

Bake Off was originally hosted by Mel and Sue during its original BBC incarnation, with Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig taking over when the show made the jump to Channel 4.

Sandi stepped down as host in 2019, with Matt taking over as Noel’s co-host in 2020.

The Great British Bake Off will return to Channel 4 in the autumn.

Gwyneth Paltrow Responds To Backlash Over Comments About Her Eating Habits And Wellness Routine

Gwyneth Paltrow has responded to the backlash she has faced after revealing her eating habits and wellness routine during a recent podcast interview.

The Hollywood star faced criticism from dieticians and nutritionists after speaking of how her daily habits include a coffee, exercise for an hour and then bone broth for lunch, followed by an early paleo dinner.

After her comments on Dr. Will Cole’s podcast The Art of Being Well did the rounds on social media, Gwyneth has now used her Instagram Story to clarify she eats “far more than bone broth and vegetables” and she was not sharing “advice for anyone else”.

Revealing she has been experiencing post-Covid symptoms, Gwyneth said: “This is a person I’ve been working with for over two years, now, to deal with some chronic stuff.

“The way it manifests for me is very high levels of inflammation over time, so I’ve been working with Dr Cole to really focus on foods that aren’t inflammatory.”

The Sliding Doors star said she’s been eating a lot of “cooked vegetables, all kinds of proteins,” and “healthy carbs” to lower inflammation.

Gwyneth insisted that her routine had been tailored to her based on her own “medical results” and “extensive testing”, and was not something she was recommending to others.

She said: “This was a transparent conversation with me and my doctor. It’s not meant to be advice for anyone else. It’s really just works for me, and it’s been very powerful and very positive.”

The actor also said the food habits she spoke of on the podcast don’t represent the foods she eats every day.

“And by the way, I eat far more than bone broth and vegetables,” she said. “I eat full meals, and I also have a lot of days of eating whatever I want. And eating you know french fries and whatever.”

She added: “My baseline really has been to try to eat healthy and eat foods that will really calm that inflammation down.”

Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders were joined by a host of famous faces as they sent up The Traitors in a special sketch for Comic Relief.

It had previously been announced the comedy duo would be appearing alongside Mary Berry and The Traitors host Claudia Winkleman in the skit as part of Friday’s Red Nose Day telethon.

However, there were more surprises in store for viewers when a heap of other names were seen sitting round the table in the castle as they tried to find the traitors in their midst.

Maddy and Wilf from series one of The Traitors also appeared, with Maddy making a joke of her many mentions about her EastEnders cameo appearance during her original time in the castle as she sat opposite the soap’s former pub landlord Danny.

Dawn rather convincingly took on the role of Claudia, complete with fake tan, eyeliner and a wig with a pull-back fringe.

Throughout the sketch, her roll-neck jumper got increasingly bigger and she wore a variety of different gloves in a nod to some of Claudia’s viral fashion moments from the show, which it was recently confirmed will return for a second series later this year.

However, the celebrities had a shock in store when the identity of the traitor was revealed… Watch the full sketch in the video above.

Elsewhere on the Comic Relief telethon, Kylie Minogue appeared in a special edition of BBC sitcom Ghosts.
