Boris Johnson Firmly Put In His Place By The Commons’ Speaker: ‘Sit Down Prime Minister!’

Boris Johnson was told off by the speaker of the House of Commons during prime minister’s questions on Wednesday during a rather embarrassing exchange.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle spoke over the prime minister when he was tried to dodge a question from Sir Keir Starmer and reminded Johnson: “I’m not going to be challenged.

“You may be the prime minister of this country – but in this house, I’m in charge!”

The leader of the opposition – Labour’s leader, Starmer – was pressing the prime minister over former Tory MP Owen Paterson, who was a paid lobbyist for health company Randox and briefly defended by the government before a dramatic U-turn.

This firm won government contracts worth almost £600 million without competition, triggering concerns about how Downing Street spent taxpayer’s money.

Starmer asked: “There’s only one way to get to the bottom of this – if he [the prime minister] votes for Labour’s motion this afternoon, that [Randox] investigation can start. Will he vote for it or will he vote for another coverup?”

Johnson replied: “I’m very happy to publish all the details of the Randox contract, which is being investigated by the National Audit Office already.

“Talking of coverups – I’m sorry Mr Speaker, but we still have not heard why the honourable gentleman will not –”

Hoyle interrupted the attempts to talk about Starmer’s own work outside of Parliament when he was a backbencher, urged the prime minister to “sit down” and told him “that’s the end of that” to the cheers of the opposition benches.

Hoyle had already called for order repeatedly in the Commons just 10 minutes into the weekly prime minister’s questions.

He also reminded Johnson “although I don’t want to fall out”, this time of the week is for prime minister’s questions, not questions to the opposition about their conduct.

“Whether you like it or not, those are the rules of the game that we are into, and and we play by the rules don’t we? And we respect the house so let’s respect the house,” Hoyle said pointedly.

When MPs continued to shout across the house at each other, Hoyle told them: “Look, we’ve already lost a dear friend – I want to show that this house has learnt from it.”

He was referring Paterson, who resigned in November after his breach of parliamentary lobbying rules triggered a sleaze scandal.

The government briefly tried to get Paterson off the hook for breaching lobbying rules but it has since turned into a national row about MPs’ standards and has centred on behaviour in the Tory Party.

Hoyle continued: “I don’t want each other to be shouted down. I want questions to be respected, I want the public to actually be able to hear the answers – because I’m struggling in this chair. I need no more.”

‘Pity I’m Not The One Who Gives Out Handshakes’: Prue Leith Is All Of Us

Warning: this article contains spoilers for the GBBO 2021 semi-final.

It was a heart-wrenching moment when Jürgen Krauss, possibly the best-loved contestant in Great British Bake Off history, presented his semi-final signature bake to the judges.

Paul Hollywood declared “I like it, but I don’t love it” and declined to give Jürgen one of his famed “Hollywood handshakes”, when the other three contestants each received one.

Jürgen looked towards Prue for redemption and thankfully, she loved the bake. But alas, it seems her opinion wasn’t enough.

“It’s a pity I’m not the one who gives out handshakes,” lamented Prue – while women watching the TV screamed in unison: “Why not!?”

Paul’s handshakes started as a bit of fun, where, back in the Mary Berry days of season three, he whipped out his palm to congratulate contestant Ryan Chong for some stellar sweet dough.

But the shakes have since morphed into something so much more – a symbol of success that’s almost as coveted as the “star baker” title.

In what was a close-knit episode – with the contestants almost impossible to separate – many on social media have speculated that Paul’s lack of handshake was the final nail in the coffin for Jürgen, who was voted off ahead of the final.

Women have also questiond why Paul’s handshake holds so much power – and suggested it’s just another example of a man’s opinion being held in higher esteem than a woman’s.

Of course, we mustn’t forget that this is a light-hearted baking show, and the contestants clearly do adore being recognised for their hard work with Hollywood’s extended hand.

Still, the unequal power dynamic between Paul and Prue is increasingly hard to ignore – and reminds us of every time an experienced woman has been overlooked in the workplace in favour of a confident man.

We’d like to petition for Prue to have her own handshake – the ‘Prue Pat’, as some on social media have called it. Or, as others have suggested, she could bestow her signature necklace on successful bakers like a medal, instead.

Now, that’s a prize we’d truly appreciate.

5 Myths Debunked About How The Covid Vaccine Affects Pregnancy And Fertility

There is no pattern from any reports so far which suggest any of the vaccines used in the UK, or reactions to them, increase the risk of miscarriage or stillbirth, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said.

It said the numbers of reports of miscarriages and stillbirth are “low in relation to the number of pregnant women who have received Covid-19 vaccines to date and how commonly these events occur in the UK outside of the pandemic”.

Myth 2: The jab will affect your fertility

There is no evidence to indicate the Covid-19 vaccine will affect fertility or the ability to have children, according to the UK’s medical regulator.

The rigorous evaluation completed to date did not show a link between changes to menstrual periods and related symptoms and Covid-19 vaccines.

The number of reports of menstrual disorders and vaginal bleeding is low in relation to both the number of people who have received vaccines to date and how common menstrual disorders are generally.

The menstrual changes reported are mostly transient in nature. There is no evidence to suggest that Covid-19 vaccines will affect fertility and the ability to have children.

Myth 3: The vaccine will affect birth outcomes

There is no evidence that having the coronavirus vaccine when pregnant is altering birth outcomes, a UK study concluded.

The research – which was the first from the UK focusing on safety outcomes for pregnant women – found similar birth outcomes for those who have had a Covid-19 vaccine and those who have not. Similar studies have been conducted abroad.

There were no statistically significant differences in the data, with no increase in stillbirths or premature births, no abnormalities with development and no evidence of babies being smaller or bigger, the research team at St George’s, University of London said.

Thousands of pregnant women in England have been vaccinated against coronavirus, with no safety concerns reported.

Myth 4: The vaccine is riskier than Covid

Some parents-to-be are worried about what the vaccine will mean for their unborn child. However, several studies have shown that the vaccine is safe for pregnant mums and their babies, especially as the vaccine does not include a live strain of the virus.

In fact, if mums choose not to get vaccinated but catch Covid, this is more likely to affect the baby.

Pregnant women who do get symptomatic Covid-19, particularly in the third trimester, are two to three times more likely to give birth to their baby prematurely, according to data from the UK Obstetric Surveillance System. Premature birth remains the leading cause of death, illness and disability in babies.

Myth 5: There are too many ‘mixed messages’ about the vaccine

Over half of pregnant women (58%) have declined the Covid-19 vaccination, according to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) and the Royal College of Midwives (RCM). The groups blame “mixed messages” about the vaccine and pregnancy earlier in the pandemic.

However, both the NHS and CDC (US Centres for Disease Control), plus the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), all recommend vaccinations for pregnant people.

Earlier in the pandemic, when the vaccine was newer and research only emerging, healthcare officials did warn against vaccinations for expectant mums. However, we now know far more about the virus and the vaccines, and earlier on in the year, healthcare officials said it was safe for this cohort to get the jab and actively encouraged them to do so.

So, there are plenty of reasons to go for the jab. If you have any other concerns about the jab while pregnant or trying for a baby, chat to your doctor or midwife.

Covid Update: Where In The UK Are Infection Rates Still Rising?

Covid positive cases have increased in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland in recent days.

The government continues to push the public to get booster vaccines and has just announced that it will roll out the second vaccine doses to those aged 16 and 17.

Despite concerns about putting the NHS under strain this winter, prime minister Boris Johnson has insisted that Downing Street will not be implementing plan B and bringing stricter social distancing measures – or mandatory face masks – back any time soon.

Yet Covid cases continue to climb.

There were a total of 244,134 new Covid cases reported between November 3 and November 10 in the UK – data from November 11 to November 14 is incomplete and so has not been included.

This equates to 363.9 cases per 100,000 overall, which is higher than the last few days, but slightly below the previous week of 392.2 cases.

Covid-19 case rates in UK nations

As a third of UK local authorities are recording an increase in rates, here’s a breakdown of just which areas are experiencing the largest jump in the Covid infection.

England

The current rate in England is 351.9 infections per 100,000 people.

Out of 312 local authorities in England, 85 have experienced a week on week increase. The data shows most of these infections are among schoolchildren aged between five and nine and 10 to 14, likely prompted by their return to the classroom after the October half-term.

The three local authorities in England which have seen the largest jump in new Covid cases are:

  • Torridge in Devon, case rate increased from 376.9 to 638.8.

  • Charnwood in Leicestershire’s rate has jumped from 350.8 to 530.7.

  • North Devon now has the highest rate in England, as its rates increased from 495.1 to 645.8.

Scotland

Scotland has seen its case numbers rise up to 375.7 per 100,000 – this is an increase up week-on-week from 334.7.

This means the nation has the most Covid cases it has experienced since September 26.

Only six out of 32 areas in Scotland have experienced a decrease in case numbers.

The areas with the worst Covid rates are:

  • Moray, where cases shot up from 318.7 to 501.5.

  • Perth & Kinross – cases rose from 306-8 to 479.2.

  • Dumfries & Galloway, where the rate increased from 394.5 to 529.4.

  • Scotland has the highest local rate in the whole of the UK, in the Orkney Islands – the current infection rate is at 696.4 per 100,000.

Northern Ireland

The current rate of new cases in Northern Ireland is 482.7 per 100,000 – this has increased from 421.2 the previous week.

This is also the highest rate the nation has experienced since September 14, as Covid cases have soared in nine of the 11 local authority areas.

The case rate has jumped the most in:

  • Causeway Coast & Glens, has seen a large increase from 442.9 to 628.5 – the highest rate in Northern Ireland.

  • Mid-Ulster has seen an increase from 394.1 to 515.6.

  • Fermanagh & Omagh’s rate has increased from 484.9 to 591.5.

Wales

Wales has the highest case rate per 100,000 across the four nations, with 486.5 cases. Most of these cases are among just five of 22 areas in the nation.

The rate had recently risen to 551.1, so Wales has actually seen a drop in its overall week-on-week data.

The largest increases between November 3 and November 10 were seen in:

  • Gwynedd, where it increased from 475.3 to 551.2.

  • Carmarthenshire, from 480.3 to 529.3.

  • Vale of Glamorgan has the highest rate out of Wales, with 626.0 – down from 759.8.

How does the UK compare to the rest of western Europe?

Concerns over a winter wave has seen the Netherlands implement a partial lockdown for at least three weeks and Austria impose a complete lockdown for unvaccinated people for 10 days, to start with.

Both countries have see a rapid increase in Covid cases recently, with Austria’s cases soaring to more than 800 per 100,000 people.

The UK has a higher case rate than both France and Germany, but with a rate just under 400 cases per 100,000 people, it’s still a long way off Austria’s infections.

Boris Johnson To Host Downing Street Press Conference At 5pm Today

Boris Johnson will host a Downing Street press conference at 5pm today, it has been announced.

The briefing will be on the Cop26 climate change conference and the prime minister will appear alongside the summit’s president Alok Sharma.

It comes after a pact was finally agreed in Glasgow last night which saw a dramatic last-minute intervention from China and India to water down the deal to end the use of coal power.

Sharma today said the two states would have to “justify themselves” to climate vulnerable countries.

He made the comments after fighting back tears on the world stage as the deal was finally completed.

The agreement had been due to include a pledge to accelerate the “phase-out” of coal power but it was switched to “phase-down”.

The word change reduces the urgency with which countries are required to reduce the use of coal – the worst fossil fuel for greenhouse gases.

This morning, Sharma told Sky News: “On the issue of coal, China and India of course are going to have to justify to some of the most climate vulnerable countries what happened. You heard that disappointment on the floor.”

A tearful Sharma told delegates last night: “I apologise for the way this process has unfolded. I am deeply sorry.”

However, the Glasgow Climate Pact is the first ever climate deal to explicitly plan to reduce coal.

The overall deal saw nearly 200 countries agree to keep the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels “alive” or within reach.

Angela Rayner Tears Into Tory Sleaze: ‘Corruption After Corruption’

Angela Rayner has torn into the sleaze allegations swirling around the Conservative Party, describing the scandals as “corruption”.

The deputy leader of the Labour Party said they would ban second jobs for MPs except for in areas such as A&E doctors and set up a commission for “integrity and ethics”.

However, she also faced uncomfortable questions over Labour leader Keir Starmer’s former second job and outside earnings which have come under increased scrutiny in today’s papers.

Rayner told the BBC’s Andrew Marr show: “What we won’t have is people getting loans like we’ve seen from Jacob Rees-Mogg where he’s got £6 million on really small interest rates, where we’ve seen Grant Shapps, who’s basically been setting up his own lobbyist company within his own department to lobby his own government for his own personal means.

“Sleaze after sleaze, corruption after corruption, we’ve got to end this now because it really undermines public trust and confidence in our government.

“And it was John Major’s government, a Conservative government, that brought in the Nolan Principles and this government is completely undermining them.”

She was also pressed on allegations that Starmer used his Commons office for party political campaigning.

One Sunday newspaper claimed he may have broken the MPs’ code of conduct by using his taxpayer-funded office for ‘Call Keir’ Zoom calls.

But Rayner swerved the question, claiming Boris Johnson had allowed corruption and sleaze to “enter our politics”.

Pressed on whether it was right that Starmer had allegedly earned £100,000 in legal fees since becoming an MP, she said he had given up his practising certificate.

She avoided approaching the subject head on, referring to the government’s “dodgy contracts” and sleaze that has “undermined our democracy”.

Presenter Andrew Marr pushed her again, saying: “Do you think it was OK for Keir Starmer to stand on a manifesto in 2015 which promised to ban MPs from paid consultancies and then take £9,480 for advising the government of Gibraltar a few months later. Do you think that was alright?”

She replied: “Me and Keir have been absolutely crystal clear on this and our manifesto has been consistently clear on this since 2015 that we would ban paid consultancy and directorships and lobbyists because this is what’s really undermining our country at the moment.”

Marr put the screws on, saying: “I’m just asking you again. Why was it alright for Keir Starmer to take that money from the government of Gibraltar then?”

Rayner replied: “Keir Starmer has been very clear second jobs – we do not accept that, we don’t accept paid consultancy. Keir Starmer as the prime minister will bring forward legislation to clean up the act…”

The senior Labour MP said she did not accept that what Tory MP Geoffrey Cox did was the same as the legal work Starmer had performed when he was first an MP.

Cox, a barrister and former attorney general, has come under fire after it was revealed last week that he had earned hundreds of thousands of pounds in legal fees working in the Caribbean during the coronavirus pandemic.

During another exchange over travel, Rayner claimed Starmer never used domestic flights.

However, Starmer shared a video of himself in April this year flying from London to Edinburgh to film a campaign advert for the local elections.

Asked if a Labour prime minister would commit to never use domestic flights and private planes, Rayner replied: “Keir doesn’t use domestic flights, Keir always travels as green as we possibly can…it was actually significantly cheaper to go in a domestic flight [to Glasgow] than it was to use the train, so we need to invest in our public transport services.”

Starmer was criticised by environmental activists at the time as they pointed out he could have taken the train instead to reduce his carbon footprint.

It comes as a spotlight was shone on the actions of the transport secretary Grant Shapps and leader of the house of commons Jacob Rees-Mogg today.

The Sunday Times unveiled allegations that plane enthusiast Shapps had effectively lobbied against his own government.

According to the claims, he spent public money on lobbying to oppose the government’s plans to build on private runways. A Department for Transport spokesperson said it was “right” he promoted all aspects of the department’s brief including the general aviation sector.

Meanwhile, the Mail on Sunday reported claims that Rees-Mogg may have breached parliamentary rules by not declaring £6 million in personal loans from his Cayman Islands-linked company.

He apparently borrowed up to £2.94 million a year in ‘director’s loans’ from his UK-based Saliston Ltd between 2018 and 2020. Rees-Mogg said the company was 100 per cent owned by him, declared clearly in the Commons register and to the Cabinet Office. “It has no activities that interact with Government policy,” he added.

Britney had been fighting to end the conservatorship that she was placed under in 2008 after a public struggle with her mental health.

After news from the court hearing broke, many stars on social media rushed to congratulate Britney on finally being free.

Fashion designer Donatella wrote on Instagram: “Freedom is a human right. My heart is smiling for you, Britney. Congratulations on your regained and deserved emancipation.

The star appeared alongside Paul in the original film version of Clueless, where he played Cher’s love interest Josh.

After Paul received the sexy honour earlier this week, Alicia celebrated with a Clueless moment on TikTok, keen to remind everyone that her character Cher Horowitz always knew how handsome he was.

She shared a clip of where Cher suddenly realises her feelings for Josh, but with an image of Paul’s People cover shoot superimposed over the top.

“I mean… Cher’s been saying he is a kind of a Baldwin since 1995 #Clueless #PaulRudd,” Alicia wrote.

Of course, she’s not the only one of Paul’s former co-stars to remark on his new title.

Paul’s Friends co-star, who he also shared the silver screen with in 1998 film The Object Of My Affection and 2011′s Wanderlust, wrote on her Instagram Story: “This makes me so happy. We’ve ALWAYS known this, but Paul Rudd is officially @people’s Sexiest Man Alive!”

Alison Hammond Reveals How Her Lady Gaga Interview Got Off To A Bit Of An Awkward Start

Alison Hammond has admitted things got off to a slightly awkward start when she sat down to interview Lady Gaga earlier this week.

Gaga is currently in town to promote her new film House Of Gucci, and while promoting the film, she spoke with the This Morning legend for a new TV interview.

At the beginning of Friday’s live show, Alison told co-presenter Dermot O’Leary: “I had the best week. Yesterday, I met… wait for it… Lady Gaga.”

This Morning then showed a brief teaser of Alison meeting the Oscar-winning star, with the presenter initially offering Gaga her elbow when they first met, and the singer stating: “I’d love to hug you.”

“I’d love to hug you too,” Alison replied, with Gaga eventually deciding to go in for a full embrace.

“Oh my god, I got a hug!” the former Big Brother star then exclaimed. “How are you darling? So lovely to meet you. You look beautiful.”

Back in the studio, Alison said of the miscommunication: “I was really shocked because obviously we’d all been tested, and I didn’t know she was going to go in for a hug! I was giving her the elbow!”

Alison admitted she hadn't been expecting Gaga to go in for a full hug

“Especially with the Americans, you just think ‘go with the elbow’,” Dermot said, before pointing out the interview took place in the same spot as Alison’s infamous sit-down with Harrison Ford.

“It’s interesting you say that, because that is the Harrison Ford room,” Alison told him. “It’s the Corinthia hotel, and that’s where mainly all the interviews happen. So yes, it’s that same room.”

“So, what’s the deal? Do you have some kind of suite there? Do you live there?” Dermot joked.

Alison then explained: “Well, because This Morning is so exclusive, we have our own room, with our own camera man, and our own sound.

“We did have a phone call halfway through saying ‘what time are you checking out?’ or something. [I said], ‘I’ve got Lady Gaga here if you don’t mind, we’re staying here a little bit longer. See ya later’.”

She thealso revealed she’d been given of a taste of “exactly what it would be like to be Lady Gaga”, and showed a second clip of herself outside the venue in full Gaga-esque attire.

“I went out on the streets and everyone was shouting my name!” she said.

“They were loving it! Look at me! It was like Lady Haha. And then I nearly fell over. But yeah, it was amazing.”

Alison’s full interview with Lady Gaga will be shown on This Morning next week.

In the lead-up to her new film’s release, Gaga has already given several interviews, and recently told Vogue magazine that she “suffered psychological difficulties” after trying to stay in character as Patrizia Reggiani for nine months, both on and off camera.

This Morning airs every weekday from 10am on ITV.

Jennifer Aniston Says What We’re All Thinking After Paul Rudd’s Sexiest Man Alive Win

How Paul Rudd remains looking impossibly youthful remains one of life’s unanswerable questions, along with “is there life on Mars?” and “did the chicken or the egg come first?”.

So it’s no wonder that Jennifer Aniston couldn’t help but reference her former Friends co-star’s ageless qualities as she congratulated him on his recent Sexiest Man Alive win.

The 52-year-old – who appeared alongside Jen in Friends as Phoebe’s husband Mike – was named People magazine’s top hottie in their annual honour earlier this week, taking the title from 2020 winner Michael B Jordan.

Jennifer, who also starred opposite Paul in 1998 film The Object Of My Affection and 2011′s Wanderlust, was delighted to see him bag the title.

In a post on her Instagram Story, she wrote: “This makes me so happy. We’ve ALWAYS known this, but Paul Rudd is officially @people’s Sexiest Man Alive!”

She then shared a snap of them from The Object Of My Affection, writing: “You don’t age, which is weird. But we still love you.”

Paul previously revealed his wife had an equally sweet reaction to his win.

He said Julie Yaeger, who he has been married to since 2003, was “stupefied” by his new title.

He told People: “But you know she was very sweet about it. After some giggling and shock, she said ‘Oh, they got it right.’ And that was very sweet.

“She was probably not telling the truth, but what’s she going to say?”

He also said he’s fully expecting his circle of friends to give him “so much grief” following his win.

“As they should. I would,” he told the magazine. “I mean I’m going to lean into it hard. I’m going to own this. I’m not going to try to be like ‘Oh, I’m so modest.’”

“I’m getting business cards made,” he joked. “But all of my friends will destroy me and I expect them to. And that’s why they’re my friends.”
