The Substance has undeniably become one of the most talked-about movies of the past year thanks to its grisly gore and violence, scenes of full nudity and career-best performances from leads Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley.
But there’s one other thing that plenty of viewers picked up when watching the graphic body horror.
Yes, we’re talking about all of those arses.
Coralie Fargeat’s film is littered with close-ups of bums, whether it’s Demi Moore’s Elisabeth Sparkle in the shower, Margaret Qualley clad in lycra for her energetic aerobics routine or just the man that Sue sleeps with the night before her big New Year’s Eve show standing in the buff in the hallway.

Well, Coralie has finally shared her take on why her work focusses so heavily on people’s posteriors (it’s been noted that her first film, Revenge, uses similar framing techniques).

The Oscar nominee told Letterboxd: “The ass is a very strong symbol of how [a woman’s body] is not neutral in the public space. How our body is constantly scrutinised, has been shaped to please the man’s eyes, has been seen as a body part that was objectified, that was detached from the person who was simply bearing it.”

She went on to say that The Substance uses so many bum close-ups as a way of inviting viewers to think about “how much it is the focus of so many different gazes that we have to live with, that we have to take into account, that we have to endure”.

“That’s something that has defined the way we can inhabit the public space,” she explained. ”[That] shapes a lot of our behaviour.”
Coralie added: “It represents the way a woman should be totally free and entitled to use her body the way she wants, to show it if she wants, to be as sexy as she wants, to be totally at ease and happy, to be whoever, however, whatever she wants.
“To get to this place with real freedom without it being an injunction, without it being something that you reproduce because you feel that it’s your only way to exist… That’s what those shots represent to me.”
As well as specific nominations for Demi Moore and its director, The Substance is also in the running for Best Picture – a rare feat for a horror flick – as well as Best Original Screenplay and Best Makeup And Hairstyling.
Among them have been a religion-obsessed recluse in the horror film Heretic, an eccentric thespian in Paddington 2 and, infamously, an Oompa Loompa in the movie musical Wonka.

Throughout it all, though, Hugh says he’s been choosy about the roles that he selects, turning down anything he thinks has been “insufficient in quality or independence allowed to the filmmakers”.
And that’s why he was so bemused when one of his more recent movies underperformed at the box office.
Speaking to Vanity Fair last year to promote Heretic, Hugh was asked about Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, in which he played the conniving scam artist Forge Fitzwilliam.

Despite largely glowing reviews (including from Hugh himself, who maintains it is “such a good film”), the adventure movie was described by some critics as a “box office bomb”, which the Bafta winner admitted he’s still perplexed by.
“It’s the biggest mystery to me,” the British star admitted, questioning: “Why didn’t anyone do market research before?”

Hugh continued: “I think that’s what went wrong: Basically, people just thought, I don’t want to see a film about this game. Why had no one asked the public?”
The Love Actually star can currently be seen in the new Bridget Jones sequel Mad About The Boy, reprising the role of Daniel Cleaver from the first two films.
With a week to go until the new series gets underway, David has shared some of the stars he’ll be speaking to – including one guest that’ll be music to the ears of Doctor Who fans.
Russell was showrunner of Doctor Who during David’s first stint in the Tardis, and oversaw the anniversary specials that brought him back as the Fourteenth Doctor.

He also wrote shows like Queer As Folk, Years And Years and It’s A Sin.

David quipped: “Yes, I know, just what the world needs… more podcast episodes. But with a line-up this good, I couldn’t resist coming back for season three.
“These guests are top-notch and you won’t want to miss a single one. And as for the finale…we don’t talk about the finale. Let’s just say it’s a series first.”

David originally launched his podcast in 2019, interviewing the likes of Olivia Colman, Dame Judi Dench, James Corden and Doctor Who co-stars Billie Piper and Catherine Tate across its two seasons.
Other guests have included Tina Fey, Sir Brian Cox, Jennifer Garner, Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy, Star Trek icon George Takei and former prime minister Gordon Brown.
Jeremy Strong has admitted he has found it “really painful” to be misunderstood and thought of as a certain way in the media.
The Oscar nominee has become infamous as something of a serious figure in the acting world, not helped by an article about him published in the New Yorker in 2021, in which his Succession co-star Brian Cox made it clear he was unimpressed with Jeremy’s hands-on approach to acting (something he’s spokenabout repeatedly in the years since).
Asked about this widely-shared profile, and the public’s reaction to it, during a new interview with GQ Hype, Jeremy admitted: “It was really painful.
“It’s painful to feel misunderstood and misrepresented, and I’m sure there were things about it where looking in the mirror can also be painful.”
When the interviewer asked about Jeremy’s earnestness at a time when sincerity is becoming more scarce, he agreed: “I think the fact that cringe has become a word is evidence of that.”
“I did [the ad] because it was my answer and response to all of that stuff,” he said. “A repudiation of it. A way, in its own form of risk, of actually poking fun at myself, poking fun at this absurd notion.
“I’ve never called myself a Method Actor. Never once. The Bean Method is as absurd or as legitimate as these ideas that are going around.
“So I had fun with that and I thought it was just a way of saying ‘Listen, I take what I do extremely seriously, but I don’t take myself all that seriously’.”
Jeremy is currently in the running for an Oscar thanks to portrayal of Donald Trump’s former mentor Roy Cohn in the film The Apprentice.
“I’m really not in a good place,” she disclosed at the time. “I know I’ve been talking about it for months, but I’ve been spiralling and spiralling and spiralling, and it’s got out of control.”

This week, Lily returned to Miss Me?, where she opened up to her friend and co-host Miquita Oliver about what led to her seeking help.
“I absolutely adore my children and I’m in a situation now where I really have to be my strongest self for them,” she said of her two daughters, 13-year-old Ethel and 11-year-old Marnie.
She continued (as reported by the Daily Mail): “I felt like it was getting harder and harder for me to be able to show up for them in the way that they need me to.
“It was a big decision to have to leave them for a few weeks to go and focus on myself, but ultimately it was for them so that I can get us through this bit. I needed some help to be able to do that. I don’t want them to ever feel like they have to prop me up.
“None of this is their fault and it’s my job to support them and make them feel safe and secure. And I just don’t think I was able to do that because of the emotional turmoil that I was in at the time. But I do feel like I am now… I’m not saying that I’m 100% there or getting it 100% right, or that I ever will, but I’m definitely in a stronger place.”

Lily also described her stay in the facility as “great”, saying she did “lots” of therapy, both individually and in a group.
“I needed some time and space away from everything,” she recalled. “And I did a lot of shadow work – lots of work about my inner child stuff.”
A month before her break from the spotlight, Lily had made headlines when she told her listeners that she had been “not really in a great place mentally” for around the last three years, which had recently begun manifesting itself in her “not eating”.

Earlier this week, the Cruel Intentions actor was a guest on Drew Barrymore’s US talk show, where she shared that decades ago, the British star visited her at her home.
“Robbie Williams was over at my house and it was almost a date. A million years ago,” she recalled.
However, when the Angels singer took a brief look in her fridge, he suddenly made his excuses and left, leaving Selma to reach out to a mutual friend to find out exactly what had gone on.
“Oh, your kitchen was empty, and he knew you don’t cook, so that wasn’t gonna work for him,” came the reply, with Selma adding: “Bravo to him for knowing he needed a tummy filled from his woman.”
“I probably had like a bottle of champagne and like a Fig Newton in the fridge from a year ago,” she quipped. “So he judged accurately that I wasn’t the one that was gonna nourish him.”
While primarily known for his music career, Robbie recently made the jump to the film world thanks to his biopic Better Man, which famously has him portrayed on screen at different stages of his life by a CGI chimp.
Robbie has now been married to his wife, the American model and TV personality Ayda Field, since 2010, and the couple share four children.

It’s fair to say that attitudes towards Sex And The City have shifted over time.
But there’s one other debate relating to Sex And The City that’s also become more heated over time – one relating to its leading lady, Carrie Bradshaw.
Let’s face it, Sarah Jessica Parker’s character wasn’t always the easiest to root for – particularly when it came to her affair with Mr Big while he was married and she was still with her boyfriend Aidan – but modern audiences have been even more scathing about Carrie, taking issue with everything from her self-centredness to her dramatic tendencies and the way she treats other characters in the show.
And it sounds like SJP has taken some of these criticisms to heart.
During the latest episode of her co-star Kristin Davis’ podcast Are You A Charlotte?, the host told Sex And The City showrunner Michael Patrick King: “There’s still people who are like, ‘Carrie’s the worst!’. Or whatever different thing it is that week…”
Kristin then revealed that Sarah Jessica Parker does take these comments “personally”, revealing that before they began working on revival And Just Like That, the Emmy winner confided in her, asking: “What is this thing where people don’t like Carrie? I mean, how could they not like Carrie?”
Ed Sheeran has spoken out after police in India abruptly shut down a street performance of his.
Over the weekend, while on tour in India, Ed popped up in Bengaluru’s Church Street street for a surprise performance.
However, in footage that was widely circulated on social media (including three million views on X alone), a local police officer was seen unplugging the Grammy winner’s sound equipment while he was in the middle of singing Shape Of You, shutting down the performance.

According to BBC News, the Lego House singer had acquired permission to perform in the area, which is a popular shopping and entertainment street, but officials claim they rejected this to avoid congestion.
“We had permission to busk, by the way,” he reportedly wrote on Instagram. “Hence, us playing in that exact spot was planned out before.

“It wasn’t just us randomly turning up. All good though. See you at the show tonight.”
Fortunately, Ed seemed to find the humour in the incident.
After reposting a clip on his Instagram story on Monday evening, he quipped that the police officer “prefers Bruno Mars”.
Ed is currently on the Asian leg of his Mathematics tour, which will return to mainland Europe later this year.

The tour actually began in 2022 in support of his album Equals, with his sixth release Subtract coming out while he was still on the road.
Last week, the British singer teased that he had new material coming soon, after revealing he’d been in the studio with pop producer Savan Kotecha, who has previously worked with Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Lizzo and One Direction.
During a recent interview with The Times to promote his new Netflix series Celebrity Bear Hunt, Grylls said of the baptism: “I try and live in a way that I never judge and I always try and love. And that principle doesn’t just apply to perfect people with perfect lives.”
Grylls added that he and Brand struck up a friendship in 2023, after the Forgetting Sarah Marshall actor was a guest on his show Running Wild.
“I’m friends with many of our Running Wild guests. And I always try to think of that phrase, WWJD – what would Jesus do? That’s been a guiding principle for me,” Grylls claimed.

Last year, Grylls told the Daily Mail: “Faith and spiritual moments in our lives are really personal, but it is a privilege to stand beside anyone when they express a humble need for forgiveness and strength from above.
“Friendships when we go through tough times are worth so much.”
Throughout his time in the spotlight, Grylls has spoken candidly about his Christian faith, publishing a book of devotionals called Soul Fuel in 2019, followed by 2022’s Mind Fuel.
Apparently, the binge-drinking, heavy-smoking, chaotic lifestyle of Bridget Jonesisn’t aspirational to some people?
Personally, I can’t relate but according to one expert, the fictional anti-heroine caused a huge slump in sales of her favoured drink around the time of the column in The Independent and, of course, the film’s release back in 2001.

The expert in question is Oz Clarke, a prestigious wine expert and writer from the UK.
‘The blame should be firmly placed at the door of Bridget Jones’
According to The Telegraph in 2008, Clarke said: “Chardonnay has made some of the world’s greatest wines, everyone appreciated it – until Bridget Jones.
“Bridget Jones goes out on the pull, fails, goes back to her miserable bedsit, sits down, pours herself an enormous glass of Chardonnay, sits there with mascara running down her cheeks saying, ‘Dear diary, I’ve failed again, I’ve poured an enormous glass of Chardonnay and I’m going to put my head in the oven.’ Great marketing aid.”
Personally, I would argue that Ms Jones was not supposed to feel relatable to Mr Clarke, and that’s before we even get into the recession that was flooding the UK at the time.

Anyway, I digress.
The Independent reported at the time: “Across Britain fewer people are seeking solace – or enjoyment – in chardonnay. In the past 12 months, 7.5 million shoppers bought it, fewer than the previous year, according to the retail analysts TNS. Meanwhile, rivals such as sauvignon blanc and pinot grigio are rising in popularity.”
Clarke made his comments at London’s first self-storage wine facility, adding: “Until Bridget Jones, chardonnay was really sexy. After, people said, ‘God, not in my bar’.
“If you’re a marketing manager what would you say? ‘OK, I’m going to sell something that makes people feel really miserable. Let’s call it chardonnay!’”

Other experts argued that the drink had simply taken a new direction
Alan Griffiths, former wine director of Berry Brothers, Britain’s biggest wine merchants, said: “The appeal of chardonnay is still very strong. It’s a safer bet for a party. It’s more likely to go down well for a group of 50 than a gewürztraminer or a riesling or a sauvignon blanc, which some people find too grassy or acidic.”
Personally, I’ll be raising a toast to Bridget before seeing the newest instalment of her story.
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is out on February 13th in cinemas across the UK.
