Donald Trump is on day three of his four day visit to Scotland – and clearly in the mood to make some waves.
Although it would seem he’s primarily here for a golfing holiday at his two Scottish resorts in South Ayrshire and Aberdeenshire, Trump has also squeezed in several visits with international leaders.

He has already sat down with EU chief Ursula von der Leyen and UK prime minister Keir Starmer. A separate chat with Scotland’s first minister John Swinney is scheduled for this evening.
While Stop Trump Coalition protesters have been campaigned against his arrival outside the US consulate in Edinburgh, the president has been making major statements on both domestic and international politics from his Turnberry gold course.
Here’s everything that has happened through his visit so far:
1. He changed the 50-day deadline for Putin
Trump declared he was “disappointed” with Vladimir Putin’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine, especially after giving him 50 days to end the war – or face secondary sanctions.

So Trump said he was to cut that time down to 10 or 12 days, adding: “There’s no reason in waiting. I want to be generous but we just don’t see any progress being made.”
3. Trump insisted he did not visit Epstein’s island
Trump claimed he “never went” to the island owned by the late convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein, also known as Little Saint James, where many of the alleged offences took place.
The US president has been facing major backlash in the States, particularly with his MAGA base, recently.

It comes his administration announced it would not be releasing any further files on the former financier, who was friends with Trump for over a decade.
But Trump told reporters today: “I did turn it down but a lot of people in Palm Beach were invited to his island. In one of my very good moments, I turned it down. I didn’t want to go to his island.”
He also claimed: “For years I wouldn’t talk to Jeffery Epstein. I wouldn’t talk because he did something that was inappropriate.

“He hired help and I said don’t ever do that again. He’s stolen people that work for me, I said don’t ever do that again. He did it again and I threw him out of the place. I threw him out and that was it.”
4. He weighed in on the small boats crisis
When asked how the UK should deal with the migrants who arrive on British shores illegally, he spoke about the US immigration policy and said no one had come into the country illegally in the last month.
“If you’re stopping immigration and stopping the wrong people, my hats are off to you,” Trump said.
He added that he knows “nothing about the boats” but he welcomed Starmer’s strong opposition to it.
“Anyone here illegally should not be allowed in,” he said.
5. The president casually claimed he’s stopped six wars
The US president alleged to have stopped six wars since he was sworn into the Oval Office in January, adding: “I’m averaging around a war a month.”

He referred to India and Pakistan, and Congo and Rwanda. It’s not clear which other conflicts he is referring to, especially as the Ukraine war and the Israel-Gaza crisis are both ongoing.
6. Trump attacked Sadiq Khan
“I am not a fan of the London mayor [Sadiq Khan]. I think he has done a terrible job. He’s a nasty person,” Trump said.
Starmer tried to defuse the tension, cutting in: “He’s a friend of mine actually!”
But Trump continued: “No I think he’s done a terrible job.”

Asked for his response on the UK’s “divided” world and Reform UK Nigel Farage, Trump said: “I like this man [Starmer] a lot and I like Nigel.
He said one is “slightly liberal” and the other “slightly conservative”, but they are both “good men”.
“Nigel is a friend of mine and Keir is a friend of mine,” he said.
Trump was clearly overlooking the major tensions between the two political figures who tend to disagree on almost all subjects.

8. Trump resumed his usual attacks on wind power
The US president tore into Scotland’s offshore wind turbines, calling the “ugly” – while also praising the UK government’s plans to build three nuclear reactors, calling nuclear power “safe”.
But he claimed the UK could get oil and gas out of the North Sea instead, which he claimed would be cheaper – and less ugly.
“Wind is the the most expensive form of energy and it destroys the beauty of your fields and your plains,” Trump claimed.

9. The US has struck a deal with EU
Oh and, before meeting Starmer, Trump also struck a major trade agreement.
On Sunday, Trump and EU chief Ursula von der Leyen announced a trade deal with 15% tariffs – half of what he initially threatened – on most goods going into the States from the trade bloc.
In exchange, the EU will have to invest in US energy products – which will prevent a potential trade war between the two allies.
The UK’s trade deal secured a 10% tariff in May, but many European allies suggested it was a bad agreement so are unlikely to be happy with this one.

There’s already been some backlash from France, Germany and Ireland over the deal.
Asked by reporters why the US gave a better deal to the UK than the EU, he said: “We have a very special relationship with this country.”
He said his mother was born there and that it “always has an impact” and says he “wants to see this part of the world to do well”.
Even though I love running and regularly go to the gym, facts are facts; I work from home and don’t love a long evening ramble. As a result, I regularly fail to get 10,000 steps a day, even though that’s been my goal for years.
All my “Jeffing,” VO2 max training, and treadmill interval sessions were not enough. I average around 6,500 steps daily, and my ongoing attempts to hit the 10k target have proven unsuccessful and inconvenient.

I tried walking after work (a non-starter), taking a lunch-break stroll (sometimes useful, but mostly impossible due to the Endless Kitchen Tasks working from home seems to highlight).
So, you can imagine how happy I was to read about “Japanese walking,” the strolling style said to be as good for us as 10,000 steps, while taking a fraction of the time.
Ironically, despite spending less time walking, my average steps are up to 8,100 a day.
What is “Japanese walking”?
Japanese walking, also known ‘the 3-3 walking workout’, is essentially the interval training of the walking world. It was developed by Professor Hiroshi Nose and Associate Professor Shizue Masuki at Shinshu University in Matsumoto, Japan.

Like “Jeffing,” which sees runners intersperse periods of high-intensity running with walking, Japanese walking packs bursts of intense stepping into a stroll.
Specifically, it asks you to walk for three minutes at a fast pace and slowly for another three minutes. Repeat this five times for a 30-minute workout.
The 2007 paper that the method’s inventors wrote found that, among middle-aged participants, those who tried “Japanese walking” left with lower blood pressure, stronger thigh muscles, and better aerobic ability than those who either did not walk or walked 8,000 steps a day at a moderate pace.

“High-intensity interval walking may protect against age-associated increases in blood pressure and decreases in thigh muscle strength and peak aerobic capacity,” the paper reads.
Dr Suzanne Wylie, a GP and medical adviser for IQdoctor, told HuffPost UK: “Even a modest 30-minute walk delivers remarkable cardiovascular benefits, reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke whilst improving blood pressure control.
“Regular movement helps maintain a healthy weight and strengthens muscles and bones – a crucial factor as we age, to help prevent osteoporosis and preserve mobility.”

I’ve never found walking easier or more fun
Having tried the method myself, it’s safe to say I’m never going back.
Somehow, knowing the walk is going to take a maximum of half an hour means I’m much more open to the idea.
I walk more often, enjoy the time more (I think that the three-minute-on, three-minute-off approach makes the exercise go by much faster), and have even upped my step average by a couple of thousand per day.

“From a clinical perspective, any form of consistent, moderate-intensity walking, especially if it incorporates posture, breathing, or mindfulness as Japanese walking sometimes does, can further enhance cardiovascular and mental health,” Dr Wylie shared.
Jadarite has been likened to Superman’s ‘kryptonite’ based on their similar chemical compositions.
It was discovered in the Jadar Valley of Serbia and officially recognized as a new mineral in 2006.
Whilst lacking any actual superpowers, jadarite has great potential as an important resource of lithium and boron.
Kryptonite’s twin on Earth
Described as ‘Earth’s kryptonite twin’, jadarite is a rare and fascinating mineral that quickly caught the attention of scientists and Superman fans alike.
The mineral was discovered by exploration geologists from Rio Tinto in 2004 in the Jadar Valley of Serbia. Its chemical composition is exactly like the fictional kryptonite right out of the comic books — with a few differences. Where kryptonite glows green and weakens superheroes, jadarite offers immense potential for Earth’s energy transition away from fossil fuels.
A new mineral on the scene
Jadarite was identified by Rio Tinto geologists during exploration drilling and didn’t match any known mineral at the time. After analysis by the Natural History Museum in London and the National Research Council of Canada, it was officially recognised as a new mineral in 2006.
Jadarite is a “sodium lithium boron silicate hydroxide” mineral, coincidentally the same scientific name written on a case containing kryptonite stolen by Lex Luther from a museum in the film Superman Returns.
While the film version of kryptonite contains fluorine and glows an eery green, the chemical formula of the real version is LiNaSiB₃O₇(OH) and is a much less supernatural dull white — though it does fluoresce a pinkish-orange under UV light.
Super in its own right
Michael Page, a scientist with Australia’s Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), said that the mineral is ‘super’ in its own right.
“While lacking any supernatural powers the real jadarite has great potential as an important source of lithium and boron,” Michael said.
“In fact, the Jadar deposit where it was first discovered is considered one of the largest lithium deposits in the world, making it a potential game-changer for the global green energy transition.”
ANSTO is one of the three supporting agencies of the Australian Critical Minerals R&D Hub, alongside Geoscience Australia and CSIRO, hosted by CSIRO. One of the Hub’s key missions is to better connect Australia’s R&D ecosystem, including Australian industry, to enable access and utilization of critical minerals to strengthen Australia’s value chain domestically and across the globe.
The work that ANSTO does has a significant focus on how these critical minerals, such as jadarite, can be utilised to support Australian industry in a commercial capacity.
“At ANSTO, we work with industry to develop process solutions for many critical elements including lithium, and the challenges posed by a new type of mineral resource are very exciting,” Michael said.
ANSTO has produced battery grade lithium chemicals from many different mineral deposits, such as spodumene, lepidolite and even jadarite, ensuring that Australian miners receive the support they need to meet the challenges of the energy transition.

The ’90s was a fertile time for horror revivals, and fans loved this return to the waking nightmare of Freddy Krueger in 1994, who was first introduced in 1984’s A Nightmare on Elm Street.

This movie came with a bit of a meta twist though, because instead of being portrayed as a villain who haunts nightmares, Freddy actually invaded the real world to target the cast and crew involved in the making of the films about him.
As the trailer puts it, “terror no longer stops at the screen…”

The Tory leader’s remarks come amid growing concerns that people in the Palestinian territory are facing mass starvation due Israel’s blockade of relief.

More than 100 non-governmental organisations issued a statement this week saying the “Israeli government’s siege starves the people of Gaza, aid workers are now joining the same food lines, risking being shot just to feed their families”.
Israel did announce over the weekend that it would allow airdrops of relief into the Palestinian territory, and promised it would implement a “tactical pause” in its military operation in three parts of Gaza to help ease the humanitarian crisis.
But speaking to Sky News this morning, the Tory leader suggested her support for Israel had not wavered despite the international community’s fears.

Presenter Trevor Phillips asked for Badenoch’s reaction to Live Aid organiser Bob Geldof’s claim that Israel has been “lying” about the food crisis in Gaza.
She said: “I disagree with that. What I am seeing is Israel allowing humanitarian aid to go in. This has been an unbelievably difficult situation, it’s been heartbreaking seeing some of those pictures, hearing some of those stories.
“What we allow want to see is this awful war coming to an end. And that will happen when those hostages are released and we get a ceasefire.”

Phillips asked: “Have those pictures at all led your pretty much unwavering support for Israel to waver?”
“No, no. War is a difficult situation,” she replied. “What I see when I see Israel is a country that is trying to defend itself, mostly from Iran and a lot of its proxies – Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis. I think they’re in a very difficult situation.
“And what worries me is the length of time this war has been going on makes it very difficult for the people in Palestinian territories and also for Israel, we need to bring things to an end.”

Phillips pointed out that polling suggests Brits are moving away from supporting Israel, to which the Tory leader said she is “somebody who believes in looking at what’s actually happening”.
“The right thing is for there to a ceasefire. A lot of people are suffering on both sides, but we must’n’t forget how this started,” she claimed.
“On October 7, a massacre occurred. It was an act of war. There are still people who are being held hostage and they need to be brought home.

“All of this could be brought to an end, except that those territories are being run by a terrorist organisation. We cannot allow it to go on.”
Asked if there was anything Israel is doing which she would not support, the leader of the opposition said that Israel has a “responsibility to make sure aid gets through.”
But she noted: “I also know that allowing a terrorist organisation to win is not going to be safe, not just for Israel, but for the rest of the world.

“This is how they get incubated. And then 10, 15, 20 years’ time, the rest of us suffer for it. We need to bring this sort of terrorism to an end.”
Existing tensions between the Israelis and the Palestinians soared when Palestinian militants Hamas killed 1,200 people on Israeli soil and took a further 251 people hostage.
Israel declared war and imposed a blockade on Gaza while also launching missile strikes across the territory.

According to the local Hamas-run health ministry, more than 61,000 people have died in Gaza since the conflict began.

Labour minister James Murray also told Sky News that the UK would recognise a Palestine state, describing it as a case of “when not if”. However, he refused to put a clear timeline on it.

It comes after French president Emmanuel Macron confirmed he would formally announce Palestine statehood in September.
Raising teens can be a bit of a minefield – where once your sweet, adoring child worshipped the ground you walked on, all of a sudden they simply don’t want to know.
You might be facing more arguments, major mood and sleep changes, as well as having to become a full-time translator while your kid keeps calling everyone “chat”.

But there is one innocent mistake parents might be making in the teenage years, according to a child psychiatrist – especially if you want them to be able to open up to you.
Child psychiatrist Dr Willough Jenkins said in a TikTok video that it “might sting a little” for parents to hear, but she wants everyone to know: “If you’re doing most of the talking, you’re probably not having a conversation with your teen… that’s called a lecture.
“You want them talking more than you. That’s how you learn what they’re really thinking, and how they learn that you’re really listening.”

Her advice to facilitate more conversations with teens is simple: “Start with a question. Then pause. And really listen.”
In a separate video, the psychiatrist said one of the things that makes a successful parent is “listening more than lecturing”.
She also suggested “staying calm when things go wrong”, “repairing after you mess up” and “setting boundaries with love, not fear” are “what real success looks like”.

Therapists previously told HuffPost UK that creating a space that feels emotionally safe and low-pressured is important to help teens open up – especially if you think they might be struggling mentally.
Make conversation by asking open-ended and emotionally neutral questions and statements. You could say something like: “How’s everything going lately?” or “How are things feeling for you at school/with friends/life right now?”.
And then really listen.
BACP-accredited therapist Lauren Young also suggested resisting the urge to fix everything for teens and instead, validating their feelings and thanking them for trusting you if they come to you with a problem.

All of this can help teenagers know that you’re there for them. As BACP-accredited member and psychotherapist Debbie Keenan told us: “Sometimes, the goal isn’t to get your teen to ‘open up’ immediately, but to remind them that they’re not alone, that emotions are valid, and that you’re a reliable presence in their life.
“Trust is built in the quiet, everyday moments, often more than in the big talks.”
An analysis of studies incorporating data from almost 30 million people has highlighted the role that air pollution – including that coming from car exhaust emissions – plays in increased risk of dementia.
Dementias such as Alzheimer’s disease are estimated to affect more than 57.4 million people worldwide, a number that is expected to almost triple to 152.8 million cases by 2050. The impacts on the individuals, families and caregivers and society at large are immense.
While there are some indications that the prevalence of dementia is decreasing in Europe and North America, suggesting that it may be possible to reduce the risk of the disease at a population level, elsewhere the picture is less promising.
Air pollution has recently been identified as a risk factor for dementia, with several studies pointing the finger at a number of pollutants. However, the strength of evidence and ability to determine a causal effect has been varied.
In a paper published on July 24 in The Lancet Planetary Health, a team led by researchers at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Epidemiology Unit, University of Cambridge, carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis of existing scientific literature to examine this link further. This approach allowed them to bring together studies that on their own may not provide sufficient evidence, and which sometimes disagree with each other, to provide more robust overarching conclusions.
In total, the researchers included 51 studies, including data from more than 29 million participants, mostly from high-income countries. Of these, 34 papers were included in the meta-analysis: 15 originated in North America, 10 in Europe, seven in Asia, and two in Australia.
The researchers found a positive and statistically-significant association between three types of air pollutant and dementia. These were:
Particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 microns or less(PM2.5), a pollutant made up of tiny particles small enough that they can be inhaled deep into the lungs. These particles come from several sources, including vehicle emissions, power plants, industrial processes, wood burning stoves and fireplaces, and construction dust. They also form in the atmosphere because of complex chemical reactions involving other pollutants such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. The particles can stay in the air for a long time and travel a long way from where they were produced.
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), one of the key pollutants that arise from burning fossil fuels. It is found in vehicle exhaust, especially diesel exhaust, and industrial emissions, as well as those from gas stoves and heaters. Exposure to high concentrations of nitrogen dioxide can irritate the respiratory system, worsening and inducing conditions like asthma and reducing lung function.
Soot, from sources such as vehicle exhaust emissions and burning wood. It can trap heat and affect the climate. When inhaled, it can penetrate deep into the lungs, aggravating respiratory diseases and increasing the risk of heart problems.
According to the researchers, for every 10 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m³) of PM2.5, an individual’s relative risk of dementia would increase by 17%. The average roadside measurement for PM2.5 in Central London in 2023 was 10 μg/m³.
For every 10 μg/m3 of NO2, the relative risk increased by 3%. The average roadside measurement for NO2 in Central London in 2023 was 33 µg/m³.
For each 1 μg/m³ of soot as found in PM2.5, the relative risk increased by 13%. Across the UK, annual mean soot concentrations measured at select roadside locations in 2023 were 0.93 μg/m³ in London, 1.51 μg/m³ in Birmingham and 0.65 μg/m³ Glasgow.
Senior author Dr Haneen Khreis from the MRC Epidemiology Unit said: “Epidemiological evidence plays a crucial role in allowing us to determine whether or not air pollution increases the risk of dementia and by how much. Our work provides further evidence to support the observation that long-term exposure to outdoor air pollution is a risk factor for the onset of dementia in previously healthy adults.
“Tackling air pollution can deliver long-term health, social, climate, and economic benefits. It can reduce the immense burden on patients, families, and caregivers, while easing pressure on overstretched healthcare systems.”
Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain how air pollution may cause dementia, primarily involving inflammation in the brain and oxidative stress (a chemical process in the body that can cause damage to cells, proteins, and DNA). Both oxidative stress and inflammation play a well-established role in the onset and progression of dementia. Air pollution is thought to trigger these processes through direct entry to the brain or via the same mechanisms underlying lung and cardiovascular diseases. Air pollution can also enter circulation from the lungs and travel to solid organs, initiating local and wide-spread inflammation.
The researchers point out that the majority of people included in the published studies were white and living in high-income countries, even though marginalised groups tend to have a higher exposure to air pollution. Given that studies have suggested that reducing air pollution exposure appears to be more beneficial at reducing the risk of early death for marginalised groups, they call for future work to urgently ensure better and more adequate representation across ethnicities and low- and middle-income countries and communities.
Joint first author Clare Rogowski, also from the MRC Epidemiology Unit, said: “Efforts to reduce exposure to these key pollutants are likely to help reduce the burden of dementia on society. Stricter limits for several pollutants are likely to be necessary targeting major contributors such as the transport and industry sectors. Given the extent of air pollution, there is an urgent need for regional, national, and international policy interventions to combat air pollution equitably.”
Further analysis revealed that while exposure to these pollutants increased the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, the effect seemed stronger for vascular dementia, a type of dementia caused by reduced blood flow to the brain. Around 180,000 people in the UK are thought to be affected by this type of dementia. However, as there were only a small number of studies that examined this difference, the researchers did not class it as statistically significant.
Joint first author Dr Christiaan Bredell from the University of Cambridge and North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust said: “These findings underscore the need for an interdisciplinary approach to dementia prevention. Preventing dementia is not just the responsibility of healthcare: this study strengthens the case that urban planning, transport policy, and environmental regulation all have a significant role to play.”
The research was funded by the European Research Council under the Horizon 2020 research and innovation program and from the European Union’s Horizon Europe Framework Programme.
