Risotto is one of those creamy Italian dishes that’s oh-so-comforting and a real treat as the weather starts to cool.
But if you find the risotto you make at home is lacking a certain something, culinary pros have a word of advice – and the mistake you’re making might actually be very easy to rectify.

Recently, a risotto-loving Redditor took to r/AskCulinary to say their risotto smells nice and rich, but “doesn’t taste that way” – and they pondered where they were going wrong.
They shared that they typically cook the onions and toast the rice for a minute, before adding white wine. They then cook the rice in mushroom stock (for about 25 minutes) before adding butter and parmesan.
Redditor ivaivazovski also said they added some mushrooms, which they’d fried separately and, again, deglazed with white wine.

“It tastes alright, but I was expecting it to taste a lot richer based on the smell. What can I do to actually enhance the taste?” they asked.
How to make risotto richer
If you’ve been faced with the same dilemma, chances are you’re skimping on salt. Or butter. Or both. As one commenter said: “Richness comes from fat, so more butter and more cheese folded in.”
The overwhelming consensus was that the probably dish needed more salt, too.
“Risotto, especially mushroom risotto, wants lots of butter, and you’re likely lacking salt as well,” said one respondent.

Others suggested you could add salt (“and a little complexity”) with a tablespoon of soy sauce.
Chef Ben Kelly said when making restaurant-style mushroom risotto, the key technique is to “slowly and gradually cook a starchy ingredient by adding liquid in small amounts and stirring”.
The aim is to “draw starch” from the main ingredient to give the dish its creaminess. The chef said 90% of the creaminess should come from the starch, and the rest should come from butter and parmesan cheese.
Any other tips?
Just. Keep. Stirring.
The chef explained you should be adding a ladle of stock to the rice and then stirring it gently until the liquid has been absorbed – “then add more and repeat”.

The process is long – it will take about 20 minutes in total – but it’s worth it.
“If you want that creamy, silky risotto texture, this is how you get it. The rice is done when it is plump and tender but not mushy. It should still have a tiny bit of chew to it,” he added.
Don’t try to make too much at once, either.
As Italian chef Valentina Harris explained for Sous Chef: “In the vast majority of domestic scenarios, cooking any more than 600g of rice for Risotto in a large pot will just spell disappointment.”
She also warned against browning your onions – cook them in butter until soft, instead – and to add all the rice to the pan in one go, before stirring and toasting the grains “without browning”. Then, gradually add your stock.
Donald Trump is on day three of his four day visit to Scotland – and clearly in the mood to make some waves.
Although it would seem he’s primarily here for a golfing holiday at his two Scottish resorts in South Ayrshire and Aberdeenshire, Trump has also squeezed in several visits with international leaders.

He has already sat down with EU chief Ursula von der Leyen and UK prime minister Keir Starmer. A separate chat with Scotland’s first minister John Swinney is scheduled for this evening.
While Stop Trump Coalition protesters have been campaigned against his arrival outside the US consulate in Edinburgh, the president has been making major statements on both domestic and international politics from his Turnberry gold course.
Here’s everything that has happened through his visit so far:
1. He changed the 50-day deadline for Putin
Trump declared he was “disappointed” with Vladimir Putin’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine, especially after giving him 50 days to end the war – or face secondary sanctions.

So Trump said he was to cut that time down to 10 or 12 days, adding: “There’s no reason in waiting. I want to be generous but we just don’t see any progress being made.”
3. Trump insisted he did not visit Epstein’s island
Trump claimed he “never went” to the island owned by the late convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein, also known as Little Saint James, where many of the alleged offences took place.
The US president has been facing major backlash in the States, particularly with his MAGA base, recently.

It comes his administration announced it would not be releasing any further files on the former financier, who was friends with Trump for over a decade.
But Trump told reporters today: “I did turn it down but a lot of people in Palm Beach were invited to his island. In one of my very good moments, I turned it down. I didn’t want to go to his island.”
He also claimed: “For years I wouldn’t talk to Jeffery Epstein. I wouldn’t talk because he did something that was inappropriate.

“He hired help and I said don’t ever do that again. He’s stolen people that work for me, I said don’t ever do that again. He did it again and I threw him out of the place. I threw him out and that was it.”
4. He weighed in on the small boats crisis
When asked how the UK should deal with the migrants who arrive on British shores illegally, he spoke about the US immigration policy and said no one had come into the country illegally in the last month.
“If you’re stopping immigration and stopping the wrong people, my hats are off to you,” Trump said.
He added that he knows “nothing about the boats” but he welcomed Starmer’s strong opposition to it.
“Anyone here illegally should not be allowed in,” he said.
5. The president casually claimed he’s stopped six wars
The US president alleged to have stopped six wars since he was sworn into the Oval Office in January, adding: “I’m averaging around a war a month.”

He referred to India and Pakistan, and Congo and Rwanda. It’s not clear which other conflicts he is referring to, especially as the Ukraine war and the Israel-Gaza crisis are both ongoing.
6. Trump attacked Sadiq Khan
“I am not a fan of the London mayor [Sadiq Khan]. I think he has done a terrible job. He’s a nasty person,” Trump said.
Starmer tried to defuse the tension, cutting in: “He’s a friend of mine actually!”
But Trump continued: “No I think he’s done a terrible job.”

Asked for his response on the UK’s “divided” world and Reform UK Nigel Farage, Trump said: “I like this man [Starmer] a lot and I like Nigel.
He said one is “slightly liberal” and the other “slightly conservative”, but they are both “good men”.
“Nigel is a friend of mine and Keir is a friend of mine,” he said.
Trump was clearly overlooking the major tensions between the two political figures who tend to disagree on almost all subjects.

8. Trump resumed his usual attacks on wind power
The US president tore into Scotland’s offshore wind turbines, calling the “ugly” – while also praising the UK government’s plans to build three nuclear reactors, calling nuclear power “safe”.
But he claimed the UK could get oil and gas out of the North Sea instead, which he claimed would be cheaper – and less ugly.
“Wind is the the most expensive form of energy and it destroys the beauty of your fields and your plains,” Trump claimed.

9. The US has struck a deal with EU
Oh and, before meeting Starmer, Trump also struck a major trade agreement.
On Sunday, Trump and EU chief Ursula von der Leyen announced a trade deal with 15% tariffs – half of what he initially threatened – on most goods going into the States from the trade bloc.
In exchange, the EU will have to invest in US energy products – which will prevent a potential trade war between the two allies.
The UK’s trade deal secured a 10% tariff in May, but many European allies suggested it was a bad agreement so are unlikely to be happy with this one.

There’s already been some backlash from France, Germany and Ireland over the deal.
Asked by reporters why the US gave a better deal to the UK than the EU, he said: “We have a very special relationship with this country.”
He said his mother was born there and that it “always has an impact” and says he “wants to see this part of the world to do well”.
Even though I love running and regularly go to the gym, facts are facts; I work from home and don’t love a long evening ramble. As a result, I regularly fail to get 10,000 steps a day, even though that’s been my goal for years.
All my “Jeffing,” VO2 max training, and treadmill interval sessions were not enough. I average around 6,500 steps daily, and my ongoing attempts to hit the 10k target have proven unsuccessful and inconvenient.

I tried walking after work (a non-starter), taking a lunch-break stroll (sometimes useful, but mostly impossible due to the Endless Kitchen Tasks working from home seems to highlight).
So, you can imagine how happy I was to read about “Japanese walking,” the strolling style said to be as good for us as 10,000 steps, while taking a fraction of the time.
Ironically, despite spending less time walking, my average steps are up to 8,100 a day.
What is “Japanese walking”?
Japanese walking, also known ‘the 3-3 walking workout’, is essentially the interval training of the walking world. It was developed by Professor Hiroshi Nose and Associate Professor Shizue Masuki at Shinshu University in Matsumoto, Japan.

Like “Jeffing,” which sees runners intersperse periods of high-intensity running with walking, Japanese walking packs bursts of intense stepping into a stroll.
Specifically, it asks you to walk for three minutes at a fast pace and slowly for another three minutes. Repeat this five times for a 30-minute workout.
The 2007 paper that the method’s inventors wrote found that, among middle-aged participants, those who tried “Japanese walking” left with lower blood pressure, stronger thigh muscles, and better aerobic ability than those who either did not walk or walked 8,000 steps a day at a moderate pace.

“High-intensity interval walking may protect against age-associated increases in blood pressure and decreases in thigh muscle strength and peak aerobic capacity,” the paper reads.
Dr Suzanne Wylie, a GP and medical adviser for IQdoctor, told HuffPost UK: “Even a modest 30-minute walk delivers remarkable cardiovascular benefits, reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke whilst improving blood pressure control.
“Regular movement helps maintain a healthy weight and strengthens muscles and bones – a crucial factor as we age, to help prevent osteoporosis and preserve mobility.”

I’ve never found walking easier or more fun
Having tried the method myself, it’s safe to say I’m never going back.
Somehow, knowing the walk is going to take a maximum of half an hour means I’m much more open to the idea.
I walk more often, enjoy the time more (I think that the three-minute-on, three-minute-off approach makes the exercise go by much faster), and have even upped my step average by a couple of thousand per day.

“From a clinical perspective, any form of consistent, moderate-intensity walking, especially if it incorporates posture, breathing, or mindfulness as Japanese walking sometimes does, can further enhance cardiovascular and mental health,” Dr Wylie shared.
If there’s one thing that’s for certain when it comes to slasher movies, it’s that nostalgia and a good scare make for a pretty thrilling combo.

The ’90s was a fertile time for horror revivals, and fans loved this return to the waking nightmare of Freddy Krueger in 1994, who was first introduced in 1984’s A Nightmare on Elm Street.

This movie came with a bit of a meta twist though, because instead of being portrayed as a villain who haunts nightmares, Freddy actually invaded the real world to target the cast and crew involved in the making of the films about him.
As the trailer puts it, “terror no longer stops at the screen…”

The Tory leader’s remarks come amid growing concerns that people in the Palestinian territory are facing mass starvation due Israel’s blockade of relief.

More than 100 non-governmental organisations issued a statement this week saying the “Israeli government’s siege starves the people of Gaza, aid workers are now joining the same food lines, risking being shot just to feed their families”.
Israel did announce over the weekend that it would allow airdrops of relief into the Palestinian territory, and promised it would implement a “tactical pause” in its military operation in three parts of Gaza to help ease the humanitarian crisis.
But speaking to Sky News this morning, the Tory leader suggested her support for Israel had not wavered despite the international community’s fears.

Presenter Trevor Phillips asked for Badenoch’s reaction to Live Aid organiser Bob Geldof’s claim that Israel has been “lying” about the food crisis in Gaza.
She said: “I disagree with that. What I am seeing is Israel allowing humanitarian aid to go in. This has been an unbelievably difficult situation, it’s been heartbreaking seeing some of those pictures, hearing some of those stories.
“What we allow want to see is this awful war coming to an end. And that will happen when those hostages are released and we get a ceasefire.”

Phillips asked: “Have those pictures at all led your pretty much unwavering support for Israel to waver?”
“No, no. War is a difficult situation,” she replied. “What I see when I see Israel is a country that is trying to defend itself, mostly from Iran and a lot of its proxies – Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis. I think they’re in a very difficult situation.
“And what worries me is the length of time this war has been going on makes it very difficult for the people in Palestinian territories and also for Israel, we need to bring things to an end.”

Phillips pointed out that polling suggests Brits are moving away from supporting Israel, to which the Tory leader said she is “somebody who believes in looking at what’s actually happening”.
“The right thing is for there to a ceasefire. A lot of people are suffering on both sides, but we must’n’t forget how this started,” she claimed.
“On October 7, a massacre occurred. It was an act of war. There are still people who are being held hostage and they need to be brought home.

“All of this could be brought to an end, except that those territories are being run by a terrorist organisation. We cannot allow it to go on.”
Asked if there was anything Israel is doing which she would not support, the leader of the opposition said that Israel has a “responsibility to make sure aid gets through.”
But she noted: “I also know that allowing a terrorist organisation to win is not going to be safe, not just for Israel, but for the rest of the world.

“This is how they get incubated. And then 10, 15, 20 years’ time, the rest of us suffer for it. We need to bring this sort of terrorism to an end.”
Existing tensions between the Israelis and the Palestinians soared when Palestinian militants Hamas killed 1,200 people on Israeli soil and took a further 251 people hostage.
Israel declared war and imposed a blockade on Gaza while also launching missile strikes across the territory.

According to the local Hamas-run health ministry, more than 61,000 people have died in Gaza since the conflict began.

Labour minister James Murray also told Sky News that the UK would recognise a Palestine state, describing it as a case of “when not if”. However, he refused to put a clear timeline on it.

It comes after French president Emmanuel Macron confirmed he would formally announce Palestine statehood in September.
Raising teens can be a bit of a minefield – where once your sweet, adoring child worshipped the ground you walked on, all of a sudden they simply don’t want to know.
You might be facing more arguments, major mood and sleep changes, as well as having to become a full-time translator while your kid keeps calling everyone “chat”.

But there is one innocent mistake parents might be making in the teenage years, according to a child psychiatrist – especially if you want them to be able to open up to you.
Child psychiatrist Dr Willough Jenkins said in a TikTok video that it “might sting a little” for parents to hear, but she wants everyone to know: “If you’re doing most of the talking, you’re probably not having a conversation with your teen… that’s called a lecture.
“You want them talking more than you. That’s how you learn what they’re really thinking, and how they learn that you’re really listening.”

Her advice to facilitate more conversations with teens is simple: “Start with a question. Then pause. And really listen.”
In a separate video, the psychiatrist said one of the things that makes a successful parent is “listening more than lecturing”.
She also suggested “staying calm when things go wrong”, “repairing after you mess up” and “setting boundaries with love, not fear” are “what real success looks like”.

Therapists previously told HuffPost UK that creating a space that feels emotionally safe and low-pressured is important to help teens open up – especially if you think they might be struggling mentally.
Make conversation by asking open-ended and emotionally neutral questions and statements. You could say something like: “How’s everything going lately?” or “How are things feeling for you at school/with friends/life right now?”.
And then really listen.
BACP-accredited therapist Lauren Young also suggested resisting the urge to fix everything for teens and instead, validating their feelings and thanking them for trusting you if they come to you with a problem.

All of this can help teenagers know that you’re there for them. As BACP-accredited member and psychotherapist Debbie Keenan told us: “Sometimes, the goal isn’t to get your teen to ‘open up’ immediately, but to remind them that they’re not alone, that emotions are valid, and that you’re a reliable presence in their life.
“Trust is built in the quiet, everyday moments, often more than in the big talks.”
On his way out the door to a weekend golf trip that’s set to cost American taxpayers at least $10 million, Donald Trump stopped to answer a couple questions from reporters ― and he was awfully cagey when asked about Ghislaine Maxwell.
Asked if he would pardon or commute the sentence of Maxwell, sex offender Jeffrey Epstein’s onetime girlfriend, Trump sure didn’t say “no.”

“I’m allowed to do it,” he told reporters. He then claimed that “it’s something I’ve not thought about.”
Presumably, Trump wouldn’t pardon Maxwell, who was convicted for helping Epstein sexually abuse underage girls, unless it benefited him personally — perhaps by buying her silence or otherwise somehow distracting the country from his own past relationship with Epstein.

Trump deflected further when pushed on the subject.
Maxwell is serving a 20-year sentence at a federal prison in Tallahassee, Florida. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche met with her on Thursday in an attempt to quell a firestorm over the Trump administration’s backtracking on promises to release additional records from the Epstein investigation.
“What I do want to say is that Blanche is a great attorney,” Trump told reporters.
Then he launched into one of his classic redirects and encouraged the press not to investigate his own connection to Epstein, but everyone else’s. He proceeded to list names that may or may not be in the Epstein files and speculated about “hedge fund guys” and former President Bill Clinton going to Epstein’s island.
In the same back and forth, Trump also denied that he’d written a lewd birthday message for Epstein that featured a drawing of a naked woman and remarked how “enigmas never age” while wishing that “may every day be another wonderful secret.” The Wall Street Journal published the content of the note last week.
“I told Rupert Murdoch it was a Scam, that he shouldn’t print this Fake Story,” Trump posted on Truth Social, the social media app he owns. “But he did, and now I’m going to sue his ass off, and that of his third rate newspaper.”

“Mr. Murdoch stated that he would take care of it but, obviously, did not have the power to do so,” Trump wrote in another post.
The story in question reported that Trump had apparently sent a crude letter to Epstein on his 50th birthday in which he alluded to things the two men had in common and included the phrase, “may every day be another wonderful secret.” When the paper didn’t kill the story as Trump had asked, the president filed a libel lawsuit claiming that the story would cause him “overwhelming financial and reputational harm” and demanding $10 billion in compensation.
Not even Murdoch, whose media empire (which includes Fox News) has been of great political benefit to Trump, is safe. He, along with the Journal and the reporters who worked on the story, were named in the suit.

It’s no secret that the president is notoriously thin-skinned and can’t handle even mild criticism, nor does he hide that he’s particularly litigation-happy — Trump has long filedlawsuits, including spurious ones, against negative media coverage. But this time is different.
“It’s unprecedented to have a sitting president file a lawsuit against a newsroom,” said Tim Richardson, the journalism and disinformation program manager at PEN America, an organisation that advocates for free speech rights.
If Trump can control the media, he will be free to enact whichever policies he wants — without anyone to hold him accountable for the harm they may do. It’s all a part of his effort to control what Americans can say, think, or engage with.
“Trump is throwing a temper tantrum and saying if I shout loudly enough, maybe the people who criticise me will go away,” Peter Loge, a professor of media and public affairs at George Washington University, told HuffPost. “But if you don’t want to get yelled at about what you think, don’t be President of the United States.”
Because of the First Amendment, it’s a standard of American law that people have the right to speak about and critique their government, and that includes news publications. What’s more, public figures have a higher bar to clear than a regular person when it comes to claiming defamation, or that a story or criticism damages them. It’s understood, and courts have supported, that if you are in public life, the public has an interest in your doings, even if they are not flattering.

Well, it’s understood, except apparently by Trump himself.
“Trump is basically saying, if you say something I don’t like, I’m going to punish you,” Jenna Leventoff, senior policy counsel at the American Civil Liberties Union, told HuffPost.
It is, in fact, something Trump has been saying to other institutions for a long time. Since January, Trump has signed executive orders threatening big law firms that have championed issues he doesn’t like, hamstringing their ability to bring legal challenges against his administration. The president demanded that the firms provide him with pro-bono services — and many, though not all, of them capitulated.
He has also turned the screws on colleges and universities, traditionally sites of political protest and civil disobedience. Through executive orders and policy demands, he has pushed to swing higher education to the political right: prioritizing enrolling conservative-leaning students, hiring faculty that support Trump, and demanding they end programs that focus on race and justice. If colleges fail to adhere to the Trump agenda, he threatens them with loss of federal funding.
Trump’s war with the press is a holdover from his first administration, and he picked it up almost immediately after returning to the White House. In this administration, he has begun to openly use threats and the power of the federal government to exercise pressure on his critics.
“The tactics that have been used have been ratcheted up from what we saw [during his first term],” Richardson said.
But Trump has used the move since. After The Wall Street Journal published its story about the Epstein birthday card, Trump blocked a WSJ reporter from coverage of official events. The White House had also previously blocked a HuffPost reporter from the group of journalists covering the president, although the reporter, S.V. Date, was later reinstated.
Brendan Carr, the FCC chair, said it was because the station reported on the live location of the vans of federal immigration officers. The radio station, Carr said, needed to “explain how this could possibly be consistent with their public interest obligations.”
“Every elected official complains that the press is unfair,” Loge noted. “The difference with this administration is that Trump is actively trying to threaten and shut down the free press.”

Trump began a feud with CBS when he falsely accused the network of “deceptively” editing a 60 Minutes interview with Harris during the 2024 presidential race to “tip the scales” in her favour. Trump filed a lawsuit against Paramount, which owns CBS. The company said the interview was simply edited for time, which is typical, rather than doctored. Still, Paramount settled for $16 million.
After Paramount agreed to thesettlement, Stephen Colbert, the host of the Late Show With Stephen Colbert on CBS, lampooned the company’s decision to genuflect before the president, calling the settlement a “big fat bribe.”

Paramount was in the middle of an upcoming merger with Skydance Media, for which it needed FCC approval.
Colbert, a longtime critic of the right wing in general and Trump in particular, even seemed to acknowledge that the jokes put a target on his back.
“Some of the TV typers out there are blogging that once Skydance gets CBS, the new owners’ desire to please Trump could ‘put pressure on late-night host and frequent Trump critic Stephen Colbert,’” the host said, quoting a Puck News article. “OK, OK, but how are they going to put pressure on Stephen Colbert… if they can’t find him,” he joked.

Three days after Colbert skewered the settlement, CBS announced it was cancelling his show. Executives stressed that it was a purely financial decision. Trump, however, took a victory lap.
“I absolutely love that Colbert got fired,” Trump said on Tuesday in a Truth Social post. He also alluded to other late-night hosts who make fun of him. “It’s really good to see them go, and I hope I played a major part in it!”
“Trump’s goal is to have a chilling effect,” Leventoff said. Advocates worry that if he’s able to threaten and punish media outlets, companies and universities with no repercussions, it’ll send a signal to other institutions that fighting back isn’t worth it.
It’s not just those who examine Trump’s policies who are subject to intimidation.
On Wednesday’s episode of the daytime talk show “The View,” co-host Joy Behar discussed Trump’s regular attempts to turn criticisms back to former President Barack Obama. “The thing about [Trump] is he’s so jealous of Obama. Because Obama is everything that he is not — trim, smart, handsome, happily married, and can sing Al Green’s song ‘Let’s Stay Together’ better than Al Green,” Behar said. “And Trump cannot stand it. It’s driving him crazy.”
Behar “should self-reflect on her own jealousy of President Trump’s historic popularity before her show is the next to be pulled off air,” the White House statement read.

“This is intimidation,” Richardson said. “The View is not standard news, but it all follows the same line of thinking. If there’s criticism or dissent, he wants to quash it.”
In both those countries, cracking down on press freedom is routine. In Russia, journalists have been arrested for negative coverage of the government, and dozens of reporters have been killed. Orbán’s far-right party has proposed laws that would penalise groups that receive foreign donations, including journalism outlets. He has been accused of rewarding loyal news outlets with government subsidies.

“These are certainly tactics that have been used in other countries to muzzle the press,” Richardson said.
In such a quelling environment, even questionable situations can contribute to a sense that dissent runs the risk of punishment.
“People are agreeing with Trump because they’re too afraid to oppose him,” Loge said.
When the approval of the Paramount merger was announced, Anna Gomez, the only Democrat on the FCC, blasted the decision.

“The Paramount payout and this reckless approval have emboldened those who believe the government can — and should — abuse its power to extract financial and ideological concessions, demand favored treatment, and secure positive media coverage,” she said.
“It is a dark chapter in a long and growing record of abuse that threatens press freedom in this country. But such violations endure only when institutions choose capitulation over courage. It is time for companies, journalists, and citizens alike to stand up and speak out, because unchecked and unquestioned power has no rightful place in America.”
Media capitulations will only further harm free speech rights and embolden Trump. “It’s setting a dangerous precedent,” Richardson said. “And it’s hard to say where this ends.”
Chances are you either know, or are, a “people pleaser” ― someone who feels the urge to please others, sometimes at your own expense.
It can make you reluctant to say “no” to others, anxious about speaking up for your own needs, and suspicious that the people in your life are always taking advantage of your “helpful” nature.

But speaking to HuffPost UK, Dr. Bijal Chheda, consultant psychologist and the founder of neurodiverse-inclusive mental health clinic Nos Curare, sometimes the instinct can be a form of “fawn mode.”
What is “fawn mode”?
“While many people are familiar with the classic stress responses ‘fight, flight, or freeze,’ there’s a fourth overlooked reaction called ‘fawn mode,’” Dr Chheda told us.
“Fawn mode is a psychological response to threat where, essentially, people-pleasing is turned up to become a survival strategy.”

But instead of causing you to flee from or confront a perceived threat, “fawn mode” means you become hyper-attuned to the needs and expectations of those around you.
It can happen to people who were bullied or exposed to an emotionally unsafe environment in childhood, the expert said, but it can also start in adulthood following toxic work, romantic, familial, or platonic relationships.
“Because they fully believe that their safety or acceptance depends on keeping others happy, people in fawn mode feel the need to work extra hard in the moment to maintain peace,” the psychologist shared.

For those on the autism spectrum, fawning behaviours “may overlap with masking or the act of camouflaging one’s real traits as a way to blend in with social expectations.
“They do this consciously in order to minimise rejection or avoid criticism, often resulting in burnout.”
Those with ADHD may face similar pressures, she continued.
What are the signs I’m in “fawn mode”?
Per Dr Chheda, you may be in fawn mode if:
1) Saying no feels impossible, even when you’re overwhelmed.
You might find it hard to set boundaries, even ones that are sorely needed, the psychologist said.
“Even when your own energy or time has been depleted, you tend to prioritise others’ needs to avoid conflict or confrontation.”

2) You are constantly anxious about upsetting others.
“This heightened anxiety makes every interaction feel like a test where one wrong move could lead to disapproval or instant abandonment,” Dr Chheda told us.
This can make clear, honest communication “exhausting.”
3) Apologising has become a reflex or automatic response.
Find yourself saying “sorry” out or habit, even if you’ve done nothing wrong?
“In these instances, apologising has become a default response used to smooth over situations or deflect potential criticism,” explained the psychologist.
“Over time, this habit can blur the lines of personal responsibility.”
4) Your sense of self-worth depends on being needed.
Some people in “fawn mode” tie their self-worth to how useful they feel they are to other people.
“In turn, this dynamic makes it hard to recognise your own personal needs or prioritise self-care without feelings of guilt,” Dr Chheda stated.

5) You feel responsible for how other people feel.
You might be hyper-vigilant about other people’s emotions and moods.
“This constant monitoring can leave you emotionally exhausted. In focusing so much on others, it becomes easy to lose sight of your own feelings or identity,” the pro told us.
What should I do if I think I’m in “fawn mode”?
You don’t have to turn a lifetime of habits around in a day, Dr Chheda revealed.
“Self-awareness is the first step to breaking free from fawn mode. Take time to reflect on when these behaviours began and how they have been reinforced throughout your life,” she advised.
“Once you have done this, you can start setting micro-boundaries. Begin with small steps like saying no to low-stakes requests or pausing before agreeing to things.”

The process of untying your worth from the needs of others can be lonig and tricky, the psychologist ended, but is ultimately worth it.
Zack Polanski has become something of an internet phenomenon of late.
Despite being the deputy Green leader since 2022 and a member of the London Assembly since 2021, he was definitely not among the most well-known politicians, even within his own party.
But something changed in May when, after years of membership, he announced he was running to lead the Greens on a socialist ticket, as an “eco-populist”.

Although the party has not officially declared how many members it has, leaked figures suggest the membership grew by 8,000 in the weeks after his declaration – taking them to at least 65,000.
He told HuffPost UK he’s slowly drawing in voters from across the political spectrum – including Tories – and winning back old supporters, including those who helped establish the precursor to the Greens, the Ecology Party.

Green sources also say Polanski was already very popular within the party when he decided to throw his hat into the ring earlier this year, and he had reportedly been encouraged to put himself forward for leadership for some time.
He’s since gone viral with his proposals to introduce bold leadership and break through the malaise around Westminster politics.
But his campaign hit a small snag this week.
Hours before we spoke, former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and ex-Labour MP Zarah Sultana announced they were launching a new party on the left and invited everyone to join, for free.
“I’ve read their statement and I can’t see a single thing in there that’s not Green Party policy or doesn’t align already with the Green Party,” he said.

He also warned that one downside of running a party very democratically – members get to choose the name of Corbyn’s new group – is that it ends up operating rather slowly and so may take a while to get off the ground.
That criticism of acting in a rather glacial pace is often pitched at the Greens, from insiders and outsiders alike.

Corbyn’s party would have one advantage over the Greens if Polanski wins the leadership contest: its leader would be an MP in the Commons.
Polanski does not see that as a major sticking point in this leadership race though, even as his opponents, running on a joint ticket, both have seats.
He said Westminster is “dull” and it’s actually a “huge positive” to be able to tour the country to spread their message without being tethered to a constituency.

Although, of course, the politician said he would love to be an MP and will be standing at the next general election – but he still insisted: “Westminster is an important place for scrutiny, for accountability and for democracy. It’s a very dull place, not a place for storytelling.”
“I think we need at the top of the party a communicator who can speak to the country, who can excite, and inspire people,” he said. “And I think parliament at this core, is not an exciting, inspiring place, and that is no criticism of our MPs or indeed any MPs.”

What about Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, whose party has gone from strength to strength and now dominates the polls after they got five MPs elected last year?
Polanski said he thinks Farage was having more of an impact before he became an MP.
“It’s very much more difficult for him now to criticise the establishment when it’s very clear that he’s at the heart of that establishment,” Polanski said.
When it’s pointed out that Farage has an avenue to hold Starmer to account now he’s in the Commons, he said: “I don’t think I’ve seen any clip of Farage holding Starmer to account.”

He also claimed Farage is a millionaire who is “pretending to serve working class communities but actually serving billionaires”.
“I think Reform have got real problems ahead of them in terms of where their donations come from and the people who are supporting them, who have not been exposed yet to the transparency of that,” he said.
Despite his words of criticism for the Clacton MP, it’s hard to deny that the two are indirectly tethered as both are seen as populists – although Polanski calls himself an “eco-populist”.

And, according to the London Assembly member, Farage’s anti-immigration stance and support for nationalisation does not reflect populism.
“I don’t believe Farage is a populist. I don’t think we should cede these words to the right,” he said. “Populism, for me, is about the 99% versus the 1%. Farage is protecting that 1%.”
Starmer, of course, is his main political target though.
“I think the number one goal is to make the Labour Party more scared of losing vote seats to a Green Party than to Reform,” he said.

Pointing to their welfare cuts, Polanski said: “I find it intensely frustrating that this Labour government get described as the sensibles or the adults in the room when the consequences of their decisions are literally killing people and despite the fact that all the evidence is pointing to what they are doing is creating more inequality in society.”
Insiders fear the party is not doing enough to seize the pro-Palestine vote, which could go to Corbyn’s group instead, while old tropes that the Greens are “too white” continue.

However, Polanski said: “People of colour are voting for us, as polling showed last week.”
He added: “So I think the kind of old tropes about the Green Party just aren’t true anymore.”
HuffPost UK was unable to find that particular data.
Polanski has also been at the centre of some negative coverage online, sparking speculation that not everything is as rosy within the Greens as previously indicated.
The Greens’ current co-leader MP Adrian Ramsay, who is running against Polanski with Green MP Ellie Chowns, was asked if he liked his opponent during a joint debate on LBC after all of their agitated televised exchanges.
Ramsay refused to say initially, even as Polanski insisted he likes Ramsay.

Polanski told HuffPost UK that he was “upset” at Ramsay’s response.
He said: “I was… upset last night when he refused to say that he liked me. He did eventually get there.
“I also shrug my shoulders and say, that doesn’t matter. We work perfectly well together. These are professional relationships, and I like him.”
But he notably added: “But, you know, I’m a human being. And if someone doesn’t like you, then, yeah… that was… it was bizarre.”

Ramsay – and Chowns – are promising to be “insurgents” in politics, too, just in a different way to Polanski.
While the Greens may have just four MPs in parliament right now, there’s no denying that public appetite for something a little different is growing.

But which direction will the Greens end up moving towards: headline-grabbing populist tactics, or sticking to slow-and steady establishment strategies?
Only the members can decide – but it’s clear results it could create a ripple across Westminster.
