Though I’ve had insomnia for years, I’ve managed to find some tools to help me stay asleep at night.
“Clock-blocking”, getting out of bed when I can’t get back to sleep, and even enjoying a morning stroll have all helped me recover from my 3am wake-ups.

So, too, does my Bluetooth eye mask, which allows me to play “white noise” as I slumber.
But speaking to HuffPost UK, sleep expert Dr Deborah Lee from Doctor Fox (who’s paired with Bed Factory Direct) said it shouldn’t be the only sound in my arsenal.
“Certain types of background noise, also known as coloured noise, can actually improve sleep quality, reduce overnight disturbances and also help you fall asleep quicker,” she told us.
One of those is “pink noise”, which the doctor revealed is best for deep sleep and even memories.
What is pink noise?
I’ll admit I’d never heard of the noise until Dr Lee told me about it.
But it turns out it’s a pretty technical term: pink noise, also known as 1/f noise, fractional noise, or fractal noise, contains all audible frequencies.
Though white noise offers the same range, pink noise decreases the intensity of sound at a rate of three decibels per octave.
Basically, that means “pink noise is a slightly deeper version of white noise,” Dr Lee said.
“An example of pink noise would be rustling leaves or ocean waves – some sounds that people find extremely relaxing.”
The doctor added: “Pink noise has been shown to enhance deep sleep, but also improve memory.”
A 2020 paper found that participants who listened to an increasingly quiet pink noise machine while falling asleep not only nodded off faster, but slept deeper.

Research from 2022 also suggested that older adults who fell asleep saw an increase in slow wave sleep, linked to memory consolidation.
What are some types of pink noise I can listen to at night?
You can find pink noise playlists or even buy a pink noise machine (though they’re harder to find than white noise options).
“Everyone’s brain responds differently to sounds,” Dr Lee said. “However, what is clear is that the right kind of noise, when used consistently, can make a huge difference in not just getting to sleep, but staying asleep too.

“It’s worth playing around with different sounds to find the right sound for you, as not everyone will have the same response.”
Wedding planning is incredibly stressful. There’s the expense, the (surprisingly political) guest list, the weather – to name just three stressors.
And that’s without the added complication of a difficult family dynamic.
Sometimes, as Redditor u/ThrowRAsisterswed shows, the tensions can build so high that the couple don’t even want to invite their own parents to the big day.
Writing to r/AITAH (Am I The Asshole Here), the site user asked: “AITAH for telling my parents they were deserve to be kicked out of my sisters wedding?”
So, we asked relationship therapist and author at Passionerad, Sofie Roos, about how to decide whether you should cut your relatives out of the celebration.
The bride-to-be’s brother is the “golden child”
The original poster (OP), who is the bride’s sister, says their parents have always given their son more leeway than the rest of their children.
“He has been babied to the point of uselessness by our mum and dad, and that’s made him an entitled slob,” she wrote, adding: “he could do wrong in my parents’ eyes.”
The brother has always performed “pranks” on his sister, “Kelly,” who is soon to be married. These included pulling her dress up at a family wedding.
As an adult, Kelly has distanced herself from her family. But at her recent engagement party, her sister said she brought the family back together again.
At this event, the brother tried to “prank” Kelly again by pouring water all over her. He was stopped by Kelly’s fiancé, who was so annoyed by the brother’s behaviour that he banned him from their wedding.
When their parents tried to justify their adult son’s actions, Kelly and her fiancé decided to ban them from the wedding, too.

Her sister told their parents she was right to do so, asking: “AITAH for telling my parents that they sucked a parents and deserved to be kicked out of my sisters wedding?”
Ask yourself 3 questions to see where your boundaries should lie
Roos tells us that though you might feel guilty about enforcing them, boundaries are “not a punishment towards others, but a protection for your own well-being.”
Those can sometimes include cutting your parents out of your wedding.
Still, she admits it’s a “loaded” topic, and has suggested some questions to ask yourself when considering which course of action to take.
Have your parents consistently ignored or diminished your boundaries, for instance?
If so, Roos says, “that’s a sign that setting a big boundary such as not inviting them to your wedding might be necessary to fully relax, be yourself and have a great time at your own wedding.”
Secondly, how do you feel when you spend time with your parents? Feeling tense or stressed about their presence is a red flag, she warns.
Lastly, “ask yourself what your wedding day would feel like without them – would it be easier to have a great day due to not needing to worry about criticism, drama, sneaky comments, or guilt?
If you are feeling relieved of the thought of them not coming… then that’s a strong indicator” you shouldn’t invite them, the therapist ends.
Sounds like in this case, the Redditor is in the right.
In a post on X, he said: “I no longer believe working to get a Reform government elected is a good use of my time, and hereby resign the office.”
But in an equally-stunning development, Yusuf announced on Saturday evening that he was returning to the party, albeit in a different capacity.
He said in another post on X: “Over the last 24 hours I have received a huge number of lovely and heartfelt messages from people who have expressed their dismay at my resignation, urging me to reconsider.”
Claiming his resignation was “a decision born of exhaustion”, Yusuf added: “I know the mission is too important and I cannot let people down. So, I will be continuing my work with Reform, my commitment redoubled.
“Reform has come a long way since I was appointed chairman, and has moved from ‘startup’ to ‘scaleup’. Given this, and that we have now won power at a local level, I will focus on a new role. I will be running the UK DOGE team to fight for taxpayers, as well as working on party policy and representing it in the media.
“I will continue to give all my time to the most important project of my life, getting a Reform government elected with Nigel as prime minister.”

Zia Yusuf has announced he will return to Reform UK despite quitting as the party’s chair just two days ago.
Yusuf resigned after almost a year at the forefront of Nigel Farage’s rightwing party.
His shock resignation came after he said it was “dumb” of a new Reform MP to ask the government if it intended to ban the burqa.
But today Yusuf has declared that he will be leading “the UK DOGE team”, referring to the Department of Government Efficiency previously headed up by Elon Musk in the US – an idea Reform has been trying to install in Britain.
In a post on X, Yusuf wrote: “Over the last 24 hours I have received a huge number of lovely and heartfelt messages from people who have expressed their dismay at my resignation, urging me to reconsider.
“After 11 months of working as a volunteer to build a political party from scratch, with barely a single day off, my tweet was a decision born of exhaustion.

“I only came into politics out of a sense of duty, to serve the country I love.”
He continued: “I came into politics out of belief that Nigel Farage was the man to deliver that. Having read the messages, I believe in these things more than ever. I know the mission is too important and I cannot let people down.
“So, I will be continuing my work with Reform, my commitment redoubled.

“I will continue to give all my time to the most important project of my life, getting a Reform government elected with Nigel as prime minister.”
It’s a sharp contrast to his brief statement on Thursday, where he said: “I no longer believe working to get a Reform government elected is a good use of my time, and hereby resign the office.”

Vice President JD Vance said Elon Musk made a critical error attacking President Donald Trump and his so-called Big Beautiful Bill.
“I think it’s a huge mistake for him to go after the president like that,” Vance told podcaster and comedian Theo Von in an interview released on Friday. “I think that if he and the president are in some blood feud, most importantly it’s going to be bad for the country, but I don’t think it’s going to be good for Elon, either.”
The two were taping an episode of Von’s podcast, This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von, as Trump and Musk publicly traded barbs on Thursday.
As Vance and Von spoke, Musk shared a post to X, formerly Twitter, accusing Trump of holding off on the release of files about late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein due to Trump being mentioned in them.
“The fucking shit-missile is in the cannon,” Von said, before reading the post aloud to Vance.
Vance acknowledged his loyalties would always be with Trump and defended the president against Musk’s accusations, saying Trump never did “anything wrong” with Epstein. Vance praised Musk’s work with the Department of Government Efficiency and suggested Musk could just be lashing out due to frustration with the political process.
“I hope that eventually Elon kind of comes back into the fold,” Vance said. “Maybe that’s not possible now, because he’s gone so nuclear.”
Vance said it’s unfair for Musk to go after Trump for the Big Beautiful Bill — arguing it’s good but not perfect — and that Congress made the bill, not Trump.
“I just think it’s a huge mistake for the world’s wealthiest man, I think one of the most transformational entrepreneurs ever, to be at this war with the world’s most powerful man, who I think is doing more to save the country than anybody— and I’m 40 years old — anybody in my lifetime,” Vance added.
Vance also addressed a post in which Musk suggested Trump should be impeached and replaced with Vance, calling it “totally insane.”
Vance wasn’t the only Trump administration official to learn of Musk’s feud with the president while taping a podcast. FBI Director Kash Patel was taping a podcast with Joe Rogan when Musk sent the Epstein post, prompting the podcast host to exclaim, “Jesus Christ, that’s a crazy thing to say.”

“I’m just staying out of the Trump-Elon thing, that’s way outside my lane,” Patel said. “I know my lane, and that ain’t it.”
Nigel Farage knows more than most about surviving near-death experiences.
The Reform UK leader was campaigning for one of his previous parties, Ukip, on the day of the 2010 election when the light aircraft he was travelling in plunged to the ground.
Miraculously, he walked away from the wreckage and, after several more failed attempts, was finally elected to Westminster last July.

In similar fashion, those who believe that Zia Yusuf’s dramatic resignation as Reform’s chairman on Thursday night will inevitably lead to the party’s implosion are very likely to be disappointed.
That is certainly not how the development is being viewed in 10 Downing Street.
One senior ally of Keir Starmer told HuffPost UK: “Their success is because of how pissed off people are with the state of the country, not because of any great love for them or Nigel Farage.
“So it would be a mistake to think that they will just disappear because they are a bunch of clowns.”
Nevertheless, many could not resist the temptation to revel in Reform’s discomfort, pointing out that internal splits have been a recurring feature of Farage’s political career.
Indeed, it is only three months since Rupert Lowe, one of the five Reform MPs elected at the last election, was booted out of the party.
Gavin Barwell, the former Tory MP who was Theresa May’s chief of staff when she was PM, described Yusuf’s resignation as the “least surprising political news ever”.

Posting on X, he said: “Nigel Farage is incapable of sharing the stage. Sooner or later, anyone who tries to do so gets pushed off it. The only surprise is that they seem surprised when it happens.”

Least surprising political news ever. @Nigel_Farage is incapable of sharing the stage. Sooner or later, anyone who tries to do so gets pushed off it. The only surprise is that they seem surprised when it happens https://t.co/djOw1Vz8vT
That view seemed to be reinforced by the resignation of Nathaniel Fried, the tech entrepreneur Zia Yusuf unveiled on Monday as head of Reform’s Doge-style cost-cutting unit.
But Chris Hopkins, political research director at pollsters Savanta, cautioned against over-interpreting the significance of Yusuf’s departure, insisting there is little reason to believe it will damage Reform’s standing with voters.
“The public aren’t going to care hugely about a party chairman resigning,” he said. “Any idea of Zia Yusuf being that important to voters and that Reform should be written off because he’s gone, I think is incredibly premature.
“Unless Farage himself is involved in serious controversy, or has to step aside, then Reform are going to continue to be strong.”

Further evidence of the right-wing party’s durability came just a few hours after Yusuf announced on X that he no longer believed that “working to get a Reform government elected is a good use of my time”.
Although they came third in the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election, it was the size of their vote share – 26% – that made political observers sit up and take notice less than a year out from the next Scottish Parliament election.
For a party which did not even exist the last time the seat was contested in 2021, and which has no organisational apparatus to speak of in Scotland, it was a remarkable result.

Luke Tryl of the More in Common think-tank said Reform “have clearly built a credible base of support since the general election in Scotland”.
“If, and it’s a real if given their recent turmoil, they can hold it together they could be a formidable force in the Scottish Parliament next year,” he said.
Reform UK insiders believe Yusuf’s resignation could even turn out to be a good thing for the party, not least because it will be welcomed by many party workers.
“He’s a hard worker and totally committed, but he’s not a good man manager,” said one source. “There won’t be many tears shed at HQ that he’s gone.”
Others have sympathy with him, insisting that Yusuf should not have been expected to put up with the online abuse which came with the job.
One source said: “The amount of shit he got from people because he’s Muslim would have been off the scale – why do you need that sort of shit?
“He was working 15 hour days for eight months and wasn’t even being paid.
“I don’t think there’s malice in him, he was just inexperienced when it came to politics. But there’s no doubt that the work he did was at least in part responsible for the party’s recent success.”
Gawain Towler, who was sacked as Reform’s chief spin doctor by Yusuf, dismissed the idea that the chairman’s departure will precipitate the party’s implosion.
“Those are just comfortable feelings for people who need comfort,” he said. “The party will go onwards and upwards from here.”
Donald Trump and Elon Musk have had an almighty falling out on social media over the last 24 hours after months of intense friendship.
The drama has unfolded rapidly, as the world’s richest man and the world’s most powerful man – who were in a deep “bromance” just weeks ago – mercilessly tear chunks out of each other online.
As it looks less and less likely that they will be able to reconcile, here’s a look at the best moments from the sudden eruption of news coming out of the US – and a glance back at how we got here…
A Quick Recap…
Musk invested $291.5m in Trump’s presidential campaign a year ago and began to speak at his rallies.
After Trump was re-elected to the White House, Musk was rewarded by being appointed to lead the new, informal advisory body DOGE (department of government efficiency).
The pair suddenly seemed inseparable, turning up public events together everywhere.
Musk – a former Democrat – started to refer to himself as the “first buddy” to the president, while Trump called him a “star” and once promoted his electric car company Tesla outside the White House.
In February, the tech magnate even posted on X: “I love @realDonaldTrump as much as a straight man can love another man.”
But tensions began to emerge after Musk began to distance himself from the president’s trade war.
He then left Doge last month, after 130 days in the role but insisted that it was always a fixed-term position and there was no bad blood.
Initially they remained on good terms and Trump threw him a lavish goodbye party.
But any cordial relations fell away when Musk suddenly described Trump’s “big, beautiful tax bill” as a “disgusting abomination” on X earlier this week, and called on the House of Representatives to “kill the bill”.

The president said he was “disappointed” with Musk’s comments, adding with finality: “Elon and I had a great relationship, I don’t know if we will anymore.”
He even claimed Musk had “Trump derangement syndrome” and missed being in government – and then it started to get really ugly…

What’s been said?
1. Musk: Was Trump replaced by a ‘body double’?
Last night, the SpaceX boss reposted historic social media posts from the president, including ones saying deficits should not be permitted.
Writing on his social media platform X, Musk wrote: “Where is the man who wrote these words? Was he replaced by a body double!?”
He also accused Trump of “ingratitude” adding: “Without me, Trump would have lost the election.”
2. Trump: Elon was ‘wearing thin’
The president hit back on his own social media platform Truth Social, claiming Tesla boss Musk went “crazy”.
He said: “Elon was ‘wearing thin,’ I asked him to leave, I took away his EV [Electric Vehicle] Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!) and he just went CRAZY!”
3. Trump: ‘Terminate Musk’s contracts’
The president said the “easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts”.
4. Musk: Trump ‘is in the Epstein files’
Without evidence, Musk wrote on X: “Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!”

5. Trump: Musk ‘turning against me’
“I don’t mind Elon turning against me, but he should have done so months ago,” Trump wrote. “This is one of the Greatest Bills ever presented to Congress, It’s a Record Cut in Expenses, $1.6 trillion dollars and the Biggest Tax Cut ever given.”
6. Musk ‘supports’ impeachment
After Trump threatened to terminate his contracts, Musk said he would “immediately” decommission its Dragon spacecraft – the only US spacecraft which can carry crew to and from International Space Station.
He backtracked a few hours later, saying he would not decommission it – but he still reposted a post calling for Trump’s impeachment.

And, amid a series of other tweets, he wrote: “The Trump tariffs will cause a recession in the second half of this year.”
7. Trump considers selling his Tesla
According to CBS, the president might sell the product he bought from Musk’s company earlier this year to promote the brand outside the White House.
He also described Musk to ABC News as “the man who has lost his mind”.
You may already know how many sit-ups and push-ups you’re meant to be able to do by age and gender, as well as how long you’ll ideally be able to hold a plank or stand on one leg.
But what about your balance and stability – factors Harvard Health says can influence your risk of falling and injury, and which are key to pain-free running?
The key to ensuring those are in the best possible nick, they add, is strengthening your core (a group of muscles that extends far beyond the six-pack abs you may associate with a strong core).
As it turns out, the best way to test your core strength also seems to reveal the strength of your hip flexors too – all key muscles to prevent running injury.
Try a unilateral hip bridge endurance test (UHBE)
A 2016 paper sought to find the best way to measure core strength at a clinical level.
The scientists assessed two common core stability tests: the trunk stability test (TST) and the unilateral hip bridge endurance test (UHBE).
The TST is essentially a push-up test. It asks participants to lie face down on the ground and push their body up with their hands planted on the floor.
Their back, shoulders, and knees should not sag or dip. This test is scored from 0-3, with 0 meaning they failed to complete the move and had pain (3 is a perfect, pain-free push-up).
They are asked to keep their hips straight, avoiding dipping up buckling, for about 10 seconds. Pain, inability to complete the move to the full 10 seconds, and not feeling the move in your glutes can all be signs of issues.
Researchers found that compared to the TST, the UBHE test seemed to be far better at gauging your core strength, especially as it relates to your lower body.
It’s also a great way to assess your glute and hip strength, and because it’s a unilateral move, you can see whether one side is weaker than the other.

Trump even suggested the rupture could be permanent on Thursday.
“Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore,” he said. “He hasn’t said bad things about me personally, but I’m sure that’ll be next. But I’m very disappointed in Elon. I’ve helped Elon a lot.”

The tiff between two emotionally immature billionaires inspired unprecedented social media snark ― including from the president himself.
Trump took to his Truth Social platform to declare that “the easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts.”
He added, “I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!”

Elon Musk is taking his feud with President Donald Trump a step further, posting on X that the reason the Jeffrey Epstein files haven’t been released is because Trump is in them.
“Time to drop the really big bomb,” Musk posted Thursday afternoon on X, formerly Twitter. ”[Trump] is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public.

“Have a nice day, DJT!”
Epstein was a financier who died in prison while awaiting trial for sex trafficking charges in 2019. In February, the White House promised to release a trove of documents related to the case, but what was ultimately released was largely already known.
The billionaire’s “really big bomb” may be more of a dud. It’s long been reported that Trump was on Epstein’s flight logs. But Musk’s post still signals an escalation in his sudden about-turn with Trump.
The two seemed to enjoy a honeymoon period as Musk ripped apart the federal government as the head of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency. But on Thursday the two traded barbs after Musk criticized Trump’s so-called Big Beautiful Bill, a spending measure that would cut Medicaid benefits and extend tax cuts for the wealthy.

The name-calling has only escalated since Thursday morning. Trump threatened to terminate Musk’s government contracts in a Truth Social post.
“The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts,” Trump posted. “I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!”
“Go ahead, make my day …” Musk posted on X in response.
Musk then accused Trump of covering up the Epstein files.
