Can Keir Starmer Learn Any Lessons From Mark Carney’s Remarkable Election Victory?

Mark Carney completed one of the greatest political comebacks of all time by leading his Liberal Party to victory in the Candian election.

They appeared to be out of the running just a few short months ago, with Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives holding a lead of more than 20 points over his rivals.

But Carney, who only took over as prime minister from his predecessor Justin Trudeau in March, oversaw a remarkable turnaround in his party’s fortunes, thanks in no small part to his strong opposition to Donald Trump.

The US president has made no secret of his desire to make Canada the 51st state of the USA, and even made them one of the first countries he imposed tariffs on as he tried to bring his neighbours to heel.

Carney made defending Canada’s independence the centrepiece of his premiership – and was handsomely rewarded by voters.

In his victory speech, the former governor of the Bank of England said: “President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us, that will never ever happen.”

Carney’s fierce anti-Trump rhetoric is in stark contrast to his left-of-centre political ally Keir Starmer’s more cautious approach.

The prime minister has tried to walk a fine line between distancing himself from Trump in areas like trade tariffs and his attacks on Volodymyr Zelenskyy, while avoiding any outright criticism of the president.

That is because Starmer is desperate to agree a trade deal with America which he hopes will help to boost economic growth in the UK.

Lib Dem leader Ed Davey believes being anti-Trump can be a vote-winner in Britain too, starting with Thursday’s local elections.

He said: “Voters in Canada have elected a Liberal government on a clear mandate to combat Trump’s dangerous populism. Across the globe, it is liberals who are taking the lead in standing up for prosperity, security and democracy in the face of Trump, Putin and the rest.

“Voters in England have the chance to send a similar message on Thursday, by electing Liberal Democrat local champions to stand up for their communities against the hate-fuelled politics of Donald Trump and his bootlicker Nigel Farage.”

Luke Tryl, UK director of the More in Common think-tank, said there were lessons for Starmer to learn from Canada, but cautioned against the election result being seen as a green light for the PM to be more openly critical of Trump.

He said: “I am always nervous about reading across from elections elsewhere and here. There are various potential lessons – the fact that Carney managed to consolidate the left around him.

“For the moment, people tend to think Starmer is getting the balance right [on Trump].

“When Trump got in I was asked if people might want a ‘Love Actually’ Hugh Grant moment. I said I don’t think so. I think the more Trump is seen to behave recklessly, and that’s certainly the case on tariffs, there may be more demand for that.

“In any event, I think the impact on our politics will be much more marginal than in Canada, because obviously they are right next door and Trump isn’t yet asking us to become the 52nd state.”

Asked if the PM will change his approach towards Trump on the back of Carney’s victory, his spokesman said: “We look forward to working with him and Canada to further the relationship we have with Canada for the British national interest. We have a very good relationship with President Trump as well.”

Lily Allen Apologises To Katy Perry For ‘Mean’ Space Flight Comments

In a recent episode of her podcast, Miss Me?, Lily and co-host Miquita Oliver discussed the news that Katy and five other women had taken an 11-minute flight into space.

“What the hell was all that about?” the Brit Award winner said (per BBC News). “I mean, in all seriousness, what? Why? For why?

“It’s so out of touch. Like, we’re on the brink of recession. People are really struggling to make ends meet and put food on their tables. And the fact that they’ve, like, made it like some sort of feminist thing…”

However, in the latest instalment of Lily’s podcast, she walked back some of her comments, describing them as “mean” and putting her criticism down to “internalised misogyny”.

“There was actually no need for me to bring [Katy’s] name into it, and it was my own internalised misogyny,” Lily told Miquita. “I’ve been thinking about it a lot, and it was just completely unnecessary to pile on with her.”

The Smile singer continued: “I mean, I disagree with what it was that they did, but she wasn’t the only person that did it. She was possibly the most famous, and the one that divides people the most, and so there was something in me that decided to choose her [to talk about]. Well, anyway, I’m just sorry.”

Katy was joined on her trip to space by American broadcaster Gayle King, movie producer Kerianne Flynn, journalist Lauren Sánchez (who is engaged to Jeff Bezos, the owner of the space travel company Blue Origin), activist Amanda Nguyễn and rocket scientist Aisha Bowe.

Upon her return to Earth, Gayle King hit back at some of the criticisms levelled against herself and her teammates.

Travellers To Spain And Portugal Urged Not To Make Costly Mistake

Large parts of Spain and Portugal are currently facing power outages, resulting in traffic jams, airport lags, and public transport issues.

Reuters reported that Spain’s electricity transmission operator Red Eléctrica expect the issue to persist for hours.

Portugal’s electricity transmission operator Rede Eletrica Nacional said the problem was due to extreme temperature variations, which resulted in a “rare” atmospheric phenomenon, the BBC said.

Work is under way to gradually recover electricity – with reports suggesting power has already returned in some parts of Spain.

Rory Boland, editor of customer advocacy publication Which? Travel, said: “The power outages in Spain and Portugal will have a significant knock-on effect for those travelling to and from both countries.”

For those currently in the affected countries, Boland advised to “follow the advice from local emergency services and government”.

But if you have booked holidays in any affected areas in the next few days or weeks, the consumer advocate said it’s important not to cancel your trip.

Why shouldn’t I cancel my holidays in the next few weeks or days?

“If your flight or holiday is several days or weeks away, the best advice is to not cancel as you will lose money and won’t be able to claim via travel insurance,” Boland shared.

If you are expected to travel to Portugal or Spain over the next couple of days, meanwhile, the expert advised to “check the advice from your airport or tour operator or airline apps and airport social media feeds for the most up to date advice”.

He said it’s the responsibility of the airline to look after passengers on any cancelled flight, no matter why the flight is cancelled.

“That means putting you on an alternate flight to get you to your destination, if needed, or you can accept a refund,” he added.

“You are almost certainly better off insisting on rerouting if you still intend to travel, as flights will be expensive.”

Keep your receipts

Boland advised travellers who are currently inconvenienced by the power cuts, or who will be affected by changes over the next couple of days, to document everything.

“If you are stuck because your flight has been cancelled or delayed and need to buy a meal, or need a hotel overnight, make sure you keep the receipts as you will be able to claim this back from the airline,” he said.

Follow your airline’s guidance and stick to the government’s rules in the meantime.

‘I Was 34 When I Got My ADHD Diagnosis – It Changed My Life Forever’

Though some worry that the significant rise in adult ADHD diagnoses over the past two decades may be unwarranted, the facts are plain: ADHD UK says roughly two million cases are still undiagnosed in the UK.

ADHD research from the UK Longitudinal Household Study found 12 times as many people were in the ‘undiagnosed distress’ category as those considered ‘overdiagnosed’ in 2024, too.

Experts think that ADHD may be more frequently diagnosed among adults nowadays because of increased awareness and decreased stigmatisation.

For Alex Partridge, founder of LADbible and UniLad, host of ADHD Chatter podcast and author of Now It All Makes Sense: How An ADHD Diagnosis Brought Clarity To My Life, a later diagnosis was transformative.

He spoke to HuffPost UK about how the experience went for him.

“The stereotype of ADHD is physical hyperactivity, but I struggled to see that in myself”

The founder and author shares that he didn’t recognise himself among stereotypical descriptions of ADHD, because he was “quiet and shy.”

“Instead, my hyperactivity was very much internalised and concentrated in my head,” he says.

So, while he exhibited signs a psychiatrist later told him were “clear as hell” (like abandoning projects, overspending, and struggling to maintain friendships and relationships), Partridge didn’t get diagnosed until 34.

The news, which came “after a lifetime spent feeling out of place without knowing why,” changed his life forever, he adds.

“My initial diagnosis came with a significant amount of grief, confusion, and questions,” he comments (he sought help from an expert after a coworker made a passing remark about how ADHD-like his behaviour seemed).

“What would my life have been like if I’d had this understanding earlier? Who am I, really? What’s me and what’s masking? It’s a fascinating, but difficult, journey of self-discovery that I’m still on today.”

But this “grief” comes with “enormous gratitude,” Partridge comments.

“I’m grateful for finally finding out I’m not broken and that I don’t need to be fixed. Everything in my past makes sense. My life makes sense. I was always enough.”

“You’re not too old”

Partridge says there are lots of reasons to put off or avoid seeking an ADHD diagnosis as an adult besides feeling “too old” for it.

Maybe you “can’t face the idea of being on a waiting list for potentially years, or believe that, as you’ve coped perfectly well up until this point, you don’t necessarily need an ‘official’ ADHD diagnosis.”

He says this “is a completely valid way of thinking – however you opt to engage with potential neurodivergence is entirely up to you, and whatever you choose is OK.

“All I can say is that, for myself, if I had been born with the understanding of ADHD I have now, my life would have been very different. So much pain would have been avoided.”

The author added he wishes he could go back in time and hug his younger self “and tell him, you’re not broken. You don’t need to be fixed. Your brain works a little bit differently.

“And with the right tools, you can mitigate the challenges of ADHD, lean into
your unique strengths, and ultimately achieve amazing things.”

Sinners Was Meant To Be A Box-Office Hit. Stop Counting It Out.

This article includes material from HuffPost’s weekly culture and entertainment newsletter, The Culture Catchall. Click here to subscribe.

They say the best revenge is success, and in the case of Sinners, the vampire flick seems to be out for blood from every doubter who didn’t think it could prevail at the box office.

By doubters, I mean the trade publications that gave Ryan Coogler’s Southern horror juggernaut a modest estimate for its first weekend in cinemas. Even after touting a dual performance from A-lister Michael B. Jordan, an all-star ensemble cast, IMAX camera work and a wholly original film concept from in-demand director Coogler, the trades and some tracking services still projected that the R-rated movie would, at most, garner $40 to $50 million for its Easter weekend opening.

Sinners quickly surpassed expectations, with reports noting its impressive $63 million global box office debut as an “unexpected upset” for the predicted front-runner, A Minecraft Movie. Much of that success was due to a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and a fervent word-of-mouth campaign from audiences that continues to explode online — from fan theories and detailed scene breakdowns to full-blown dissertations praising every cultural nuance embedded in the film.

Fueling the momentum further was Coogler’s passionate viral breakdown of the various big-screen formats to experience Sinners in, which inspired many more to snag tickets.

These factors alone gave Sinners its blockbuster potential, now a proven reality. Despite that, some publications still underestimated the movie’s ability to recoup its $90 million budget from Warner Bros. The New York Times published an article titled “Sinners Is a Box Office Success (With a Big Asterisk)”, while Variety noted that the film’s profitability “remains a question mark”.

The latter’s report caught major flak from users on social media:
