More of a cosy crime kind of person? Look no further than Only Murders in The Building. The show follows three kooky strangers who are obsessed with true crime and start a podcast together to solve a murder, yes you guessed it, in their building.

The show has guest stars such as Paul Rudd, Meryl Streep and Kumail Nanjiani and some real hijinks fun.

That’s partly because this heatwave-packed year has sparked sooner flowering and fruiting, and sadly, drought has left many trees stressed.

But if you’ve noticed far more acorns on your forest floor than you’re used to, there may be a different cause – it seems oaks are experiencing a “mast year”.
What is a “mast year” for oak trees?
Both oak and beech trees (which produce beech nuts) experience this phenomenon, the Woodland Trust explained.
“Mast” refers to all the fruits and nuts trees release in autumn to allow them to reproduce. It comes from the Old English word “mæst”.

So, when oak and beech trees – whose seed output can change enormously from year to year – have a particularly high-yielding autumn, this is called a “mast year”.
Why do mast years happen?
We don’t know, but experts have theories.
Some think this is down to “predator satiation”, or making more food than animals who eat acorns and beech nuts (like squirrels, badgers, and mice) can realistically consume.
Because the output is so unpredictable, populations of these predators cannot optimise for the amount of seeds the trees put out. In other words, the theory goes, animal populations and eating habits would evolve to match and eat the exact amount of nuts the oaks release – leaving none to grow into other trees.

By making too many acorns some years, the plants ensure there are some left behind to grow after the feeding frenzy. And because acorn production was lower in the previous years, predator populations aren’t big enough to get through them all.
But the cost of doubling down on seeds and nuts is not insignificant. It uses so much energy, the tree’s growth might be slightly stunted.
During their seasonal slumber, the animals rely on fat stores accumulated over the summer to survive, making this a crucial period for their diet.
To keep the creatures fed, many of us might start thinking about leaving food out for them in our gardens (though it’s also helpful to keep late-blooming plants like some ivy untrimmed and avoid raking leaves, so they have a store of bugs to eat).
But according to hedgehog rescue centre Hedgehog Cabin and The Wildlife Trusts, what would seem like the safest alternative ― specially-designed hedgehog food ― can often pose its own threats.
Why would food designed for hedgehogs be bad for them?
The Wildlife Trust points out that unlike cat food (which actually suits hedgehogs just fine), hedgehog food is not regulated.
Therefore its quality and ingredients vary.
“There are many unscrupulous companies keen to cash in on the growing army of kind people trying to halt the hedgehog’s decline, and will happily sell little more than floor sweeping of the cheapest, most unsuitable products, all wrapped up with a nice picture of a cute hedgehog, at the highest possible price,” Hedgehog Cabin warns.
They explain that some hedgehog feed includes mealworms, peanuts, oats, sunflower hearts and other ingredients that the creatures might like eating, but which are bad for them overall.

Mealworms, for example, are low in calories but delicious to hedgehogs, meaning they overeat on the food and ignore more nutrient-dense fare (a bit like ducks with bread).
Eating too many mealworms can even lead to metabolic bone disease, a painful condition that can unfortunately be fatal to hedgehogs.
What should I feed them instead?
You can get good hedgehog feed from reliable sources, but it’s important you ensure that its main ingredient is meat, and that it contains zero sunflower hearts, mealworms, oats or peanuts.
These are the worst ingredients they could have, Hedgehog Cabin write, as they can all contribute to metabolic bone disease.
But there’s a simpler solution ― “plain kitten biscuits or meat-based wet dog or cat food” are perfect for their nutritional needs, The Wildlife Trusts say.

As cat food is more meat-heavy, though, it may sometimes do a better job. Don’t feed them dry dog food, either, which may contain too much grain.
My first thought on waking this morning was “ugh, I can’t wait to get back to sleep again tonight”.
Contrast this to sunnier, happier, more productive August me, who took up 6am workouts and made her own sourdough, and the September version of myself is looking pretty drab and unmotivated.
But at least I can comfort myself: everything, it seems, slumps this month.

The depression-like symptoms may come about thanks to the lack of light in colder months.
“If you have SAD, you may find it hard to wake up on a winter’s morning and can often feel sleepy during the day,” the RCOP says, adding that ”you may crave chocolate and high carbohydrate foods, such as white bread or sugary foods”.

Though the NHS says symptoms tend to be worse in December, January and February, SAD can start as early as September.
Then, there’s the post-summer (and potentially post-holiday) blues.
Dr Sherylin Thompson, a counselling psychologist, told the BBC: “After a period of relaxation there’s the stress of a new academic year, or work getting busy, but also healthy routines and habits.”
“It can be worse if you’re feeling stuck in the routine, and haven’t got a choice, but it can be a chance to change things,” the doctor added.
As if all that wasn’t enough, there are also additional work demands.
For many industries, the rapidly approaching Q4 is the most financially important, and knowing the added demands are coming can summon that “back-to-school” feeling.
“This can emotionally and psychologically impact our internal systems which in turn has an impact on our mood.”
What can I do about it?
Even though it’s the last thing you’re likely in the mood for, staying active and social in the cooler months is key to staying mentally healthy.
“When the days are shorter, it is important to make a clear routine about when we’re going to fit in exercise, get to the gym, see our friends,” clinical psychologist Dr Camilla Rosan told the BBC.
If you can, enjoy the season’s beautiful leaves while they’re still around, Dr Suglani told Stylist.
“Research suggests the importance of being in nature on our mental health, so try to get out in daylight as this is when your brain will produce melatonin and serotonin which will result in a better night’s sleep and reduce the autumn mood slump,” she shared.
Lastly, the NHS says you should see a GP as soon as possible if you’re experiencing symptoms of SAD and are struggling to cope.

And, although it was (alarmingly) the hottest Northern Hemisphere summer ever recorded, according to the World Meteorological Organisation, the UK was overcast and grey for much of August.

So why has it suddenly all changed?
Well, it comes down to a weather phenomenon called an omega block.
This is a weather block which is shaped much like the Greek letter of omega (Ω).
Weather front usually bring rain from west to east across the UK, propelled by the jet stream, the strong winds high above the Earth.
However, a block (like an omega) can disrupt this.
As the Met Office explained: “This just means that a big area of high pressure is remaining almost stationary over the same area for a long time.
“The high pressure can stop weather fronts moving past it, so that they skirt around the edges, or stay where they are for an extended period.”

At the moment, high pressure just to the east of the UK and centred over Scandinavia means hot and humid air from the south can sweep in and hover over the country.
Higher pressure means warmer and more settled conditions normally.
But, the block means there’s more unsettled weather on either side of the UK.
At the moment, there’s a tropical storm looming in the North Atlantic and storms in Europe, which has pushed the jet stream down – causing the omega shape.
Blocks can also create a heat dome, where high pressure stops it hot air from escaping, meaning it sinks, warming the ground, and in turn heating up the environment.

The block could linger for an indefinite amount of time
Weather blocks can hang about for anywhere between a few days to a few months. Once they’re established, they’re pretty hard to move.

The Met Office noted: “Exceptionally they can persist for months around mid-summer, like in 1976, or mid-winter, like in 1963.”
The UK is no stranger to having a warm September, although it’s only gone above 30C a few times. So far this year, the highest temperature is 32.2C – and forecasters expect it stay above 20C at night in many areas.
But thundery downpours will move in from the west on Wednesday, according to Sky News.
Why we might be experiencing more of these in the years to come
Sky weather producer Kirsty McCabe told SkyNews that blocked weather patterns “seem to be happening more frequently in recent decades, and that could be linked to the effects of climate change on the jet stream.”
She added that the jet stream which flows over the UK may be changing because there’s less of a temperature contrast between the Earth’s equator and the Arctic.
The jet stream is driven by temperature difference. If the stream flow breaks, an area “can become separated and almost break off, taking low pressure with it and weakening its west to east movement’, the Met Office said.
